I guess the dev is too transphobic to handle the rule

Edit: For context, @db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com discovered that the developer of Tesseract had discretely banned numerous instances and disguised it as a server error. This included more heavily leftist instances, but also blahaj.zone. More recently, it was discovered that they had also been suppressing individual users, phrases, and communities that criticize power tripping on fedi.

Needless to say, I implore non blahaj.zone users to drop the Tesseract client (support for the client has already been dropped for blahaj). So called "liberals" like this who call out "extremism on both sides" are an insult to the values they claim to be upholding.

The american democratic party blamed russia for their loss in 2016, and then tried to do a neuveau red scare instead of learning anything about appealing to voters during an election.

It broke a lot of people's brains now american political weirdos go rabbid whenever they hear anyone mention russia. Sorry you had to deal with that.

Except Mueller and other investigations showed that Russia did try to influence elections to help trump, did work with the campaign and it actually had impact. That's why so many kettle for indicted. yetAnotherUser@lemmy.ca · 8 pts · 32d (4 replies)

It means that your account and any other accounts Tesseract finds with the same name as yours (the "samus12345" part) are banned.

SatyrSack@quokk.au · 10 pts · 32d (3 replies)

Wait, so if I create a Lemmy account as @samus12345@foobar.com, that would automatically be blocked as being assumed to be an alt of @samus12345@sh.itjust.works?

RogueBanana@piefed.zip · 7 pts · 31d

Exactly, regex is basically the same as pattern matching in programming.

yetAnotherUser@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 31d (1 reply)

Yeah, and the dev explicitly chose to go with that assumption. Or maybe they just don't like Metroid either way lol

samus12345@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 31d

I do use that name when making accounts on other instances, so it was a good assumption!

Jayjader@jlai.lu · 4 pts · 31d

"regex" is short for "Regular Expression", a type of program for matching characters in text. I haven't read the actual code that uses the userRegexes list, but I think you're safe to assume that it means the tesseract client was filtering your comments and/or posts.

yetAnotherUser@lemmy.ca · 5 pts · 32d (3 replies)

For the nerds, another post (the one OP links to) stated that you can check the list by yourselves from the source by running the following command in the terminal:

curl -s https://tesseract.dubvee.org/tesseract/api/system/policy policy \
| base64 -d | gunzip > policy.json

(Reminder to NOT RUN any commands on your terminal you don't understand)

Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 31d (2 replies)

It's a way much bigger PITA to do it in Windows than in Linux.

yetAnotherUser@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 31d (1 reply)

True. However, there are still many ways to do it. If anyone reading this is curious, here are a few ways:

  • Find a way to run Linux commands in Windows (WSL, VirtualBox, ...);
  • Rewrite the command for PowerShell;
  • Do it manually (visit https://tesseract.dubvee.org/tesseract/api/system/policy, either right click and do "Save As..." or copy all the text, use an online Base64 file decoder, use a tool like 7-Zip to extract the GZip, and change the extension to txt so you can read the file with Notepad).
Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 31d

Yeah, I used almost exactly the last method you described.

Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 31d

I had to fetch the damn original list from their server, then (on my frigging Windows work PC) BASE64 decode it and gunzip it (something stupidly simple on Linux, less so on Windows).

On the upside I did get the warm feeling of finding my nick on the list.

What's the thought process behind this? So so shitty.

Chezus9247@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 31d (2 replies)

I seriously can't find a thought process behind this. This is such a weird thing to do.

TotallynotJessica@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 6 pts · 31d (1 reply)

I think they have a grudge against Ada for being too friendly with leftist instances, and/or find the vibe too unsightly in some way. Maybe we're too weird in ways he doesn't like, or maybe we're too anarchist adjacent (a lot of people on this side of lemmy are anarchists, as queer people have every reason to dislike and distrust most governments right now). Regardless, we're too controversial of a vibe for their view a "non-toxic" fediverse.

captainlezbian@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 31d

The idea of a non-toxic fediverse is so silly. Yeah there should be a variety of experiences within it, but the whole thing about federation is that it enables us to find places that align with us.

I'm still on .world because they haven't pissed me off enough to bother changing and they were the main ones defederated from exploding heads when I signed up. I'd probably go blahaj if I were to change these days. But like, the ability to change and to go to an instance that aligns with your beliefs in who it's on speaking terms with is the point.

Banning blahaj and db0 won't make the fediverse respectable, and it's something an instance or user should do, not a moderation tool

zarkanian@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 31d

What's the thought process behind this?

There is no thought process. That's the problem.

I gave up trying to understand bigotry. It's just senseless.

Bluewing@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 31d

fernsong582@lemmy.ca · 13 pts · 31d (1 reply)

The dev has such a grudge that not only will they block instances, but doubly ban specific users. Like a "eff this person in particular." They apparently blacklist linktr.ee links? And "🥺?👉👈". Like there's actual bots and spam but posts with "Hi, I'm an AI engineer based in Japan" are blacklisted.

Jayjader@jlai.lu · 6 pts · 31d

the "AI engineer base in Japan" thing is so fuckin' weird. has there been an account repeatedly posting that?

didn't they ban all of blahaj? so we can feel accomplished

hildegarde@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 12 pts · 31d (3 replies)

They banned blahaj on the blacklist in the code, but tesseract also loads a secret ban list from his server that includes individual user accounts and regex for hiding those with accounts on multiple instances.

The reality is anyone could have checked and found this the whole time. But if its easy to check, no one does. Bystander effect an'at.

hildegarde@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 4 pts · 32d (4 replies)

It has 3755 lines. I downloaded a copy this morning. The secret ban list is downloaded by tesseract at runtime so the dev can malwareban anyone at anytime. That's also where we get the copy.

I don't know how pastebin works tho.

Don't worry, TotallyNotJessica. It's possible you don't interact in the same communities the dev does, and I think that's the reason you aren't in the blacklist.

(Removed unnecessary P.S. comment)

Jankatarch@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 31d (3 replies)

It's weird.

Violet08 is banned while femcelmemes is not. Blahaj is banned while TotallyNotJessica is not.

Do they have inverted criteria for communities and users? What are the criterias? Will someone please tell me how do I get on this list!?

flamingos@feddit.uk · 4 pts · 31d

I mean, they wouldn't have to ban TotallyNotJessica or femcel memes if blahaj as a whole is banned, they'd both be caught in the instance ban.

yetAnotherUser@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 31d

Oh, and if you want to get banned, you must:

  • Go to the comms the dev does;
  • Say something they might consider "too extremist" (either to the left or to the right, from what I gathered) or "too group thinking".

I don't see much benefit in doing this, but have fun.

EDIT: I forgot to say that you should also avoid any of the keywords in the blacklist, otherwise your post/comment might not show up at all in the dev's feed.

yetAnotherUser@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 31d

I believe the dev isn't actively looking for things to ban. They probably just ban things whenever they find them at their feed. TotallyNotJessica admits she doesn't post much outside of blåhaj zone, so it's not unlikely that she never appeared on their feed.

TotallynotJessica@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 4 pts · 31d

That is what I assumed too. I don't really venture outside of blahaj.zone often, especially not recently. I did use to argue with libs a lot on certain lemmy.world comms in the past; my very first posts on lemmy were political mud slinging, but I guess it wasn't enough.

Since it's opensource, is there any way I can add myself to the list?

psycotica0@lemmy.ca · 14 pts · 31d

Good news, they namedropped you in their explanation comment:

Both Ada and CupcakeZealot (Jessica I think?) continuously look the other way when any blahaj users call for violence. Admins can see when reports are resolved, by whom, and can check the actions in the modlog. I do not tolerate advocacy of violence in any shape or form and refuse to allow my project to be used by people who endorse that kind of behavior. Most instances at least deal with it on a superficial level, but Blahaj refuses to. This indicates, at minimum, tacit endorsement.

yetAnotherUser@lemmy.ca · 8 pts · 31d

Wait, I just learned that the original Tesseract dev, paulo-roger, left the project many years ago. Here's the reason he gave:

I'm tired of dealing with the arrogant, tone-deaf Lemmy developers and their utter disdain for moderators and anyone else working within the ecosystem. To that end, development of and support for Tesseract for Lemmy has ceased.

Tesseract is a web UI for Lemmy. It was one of the options for interfaces on blahaj zone until recently.

This UI designer decided to sneak malware into his UI to keep you from seeing instances, websites, and users he personally disagrees with.

I'm surprised Ada didn't find this at the same time db0 did for the same reason - whole instance shadow ban, maybe she dropped it before the ban?

hildegarde@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 4 pts · 31d

As far as I'm aware, the change that would have banned the entire instance was pushed in an update to tesseract, that had not yet been installed to blahaj. Ada mentioned she was waiting for a response from the developer before taking any action. From what I've heard she was aware at the same time and she's in regular contact with other instance admins.

The delay was in response not knowledge as far as I can tell.

Its okay to not know stuff, but try to figure stuff out before you speak?

AlteE@programming.dev · -4 pts · 31d (2 replies)

That is the whole point. Clearly visible, easily editible filter list about which it is clearly stated in documentation was the right thing to do. But, it wasn't an effective solution, since most admins would have changed this list almost immediately resulting in very small efficiency of this filter, compared to what was initially intended. And since this dev explicitly wanted to affect maximum amount of people for maximum amount of time, this solution was better. Many people naively think that others would play by the rules delivering their revenge/justice or whatever, but this is not how it usually happens.

zarkanian@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 31d

What the fuck would you know about moderators, on any comm, any instance?

You can do pretty much the same, toxic person.

It doesn't take much time to figure out the rules here once you get used around and browse communities/modlog a few months deep. And it became clear to me, that there exist a lot of red flag moderators, whom it is reasonable to avoid engaging with. And also there exist other situation: when mod is relatevely OK, but the community itself is awful.

So, counter-question: you are seriously telling me that mods of blahaj instance don't ban(especially permanently) on spot for any criticism/phobia towards LGBTQ+ community?

I'm seriously telling you to go fuck yourself, for you to say what you've said here, you'd frankly have to be pretty stupid, and arrogant.

Again, you don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

A hidden banlist on an open source frontend fron an open source discussion forum is not comparable to an openly stated and discussed policy or ruleset.

Again, you have to be stupid, and arrogant, to think otherwise.

Please go fall ass first on a rake.

1 year old account and still haven't learned to be a normal person and not a toxic b*tch. Good luck having the same attitude IRL and not get a solid feedback.

I think we found the dev.

Maybe you’re correct but what you fail to take into account is that Blahaj wouldn’t be underhand and secretive - plus the vast majority (maybe even all) of the instance users would agree with such a move.

Regexing an enormous blocklist in a front end whilst keeping it hidden from users is completely different.

Blahaj, by the nature of its composition, heavily mods to stop the place from turning into a toxic clusterfuck.

Somewhere lower in this thread I explained(my opinion) why this dev has used this tactic of expressing points of view instead of simply presenting a modifiable, clearly visible and documented filter with a default option, that represents views of this dev. I don't say that this dev is right, but I can understand the logic and motivation that were used to do so. And, yes, I can also be wrong. I don't deny it.

I have no problem with the blocklist as is, just it’s clandestine implementation on unknowing others that I took umbrage with.
