I live in Wyoming and I can buy breads made with heirloom grains that are actually highly nutritious. The same applies to cookies, etc. Remember, the USA is a major producer of grains. We grow grain of exceptional quality. We just don't sell it to our own people at a discount. We export the good stuff for profit and eat the low quality high yield stuff.

Anyways, yes of course you can get quality, but bread should not be expensive just because it is of proper quality, the ingredients used to make good bread are dirt cheap.
You can find affordable bread without added sugar here too but itâs less common in rural areas where âfood desertsâ are a thing. This is why we have so many fat people. We add too much sugar to everything.

Costco sells uncooked tortillas from TortillaLand, and theyâre fucking amazing. Cook like 60 seconds in a hot skillet on each side and you get a fresh, hot tortilla. No oil or anything needed. Itâs wonderful. If you can find them, Iâd recommend checking them out.
Only downside is because theyâre uncooked, they have a limited fridge life, unlike the pre-cooked ones, but they taste soooo much better.
Making tortillas from scratch is also not that hard, and that way you never have to worry about pre-cooking shelf life, as long as you generally have flour, oil, and baking powder kicking around.
I freeze tortillas in groups of 10-12 when I buy a giant package of then.. They come out fine but you have to thaw them so they can be separated from eachother.
Corn tortillas are easy and taste great fresh. Buy Masa Harina and use the recipe on the bag. (2 cups masa harina, ½ tsp salt, 1½-2 cups hot water.)
If you aren't sure enough to buy a 5-pound bag, Bob's Red Mill sells a 624-gram bag with complete instructions on the back. Remember to plan ahead to let the dough rest an hour to absorb the water, and have waxed paper or a cut ziploc bag to flatten it between.
Don't try to use corn meal or polenta. The nixtamalization of the corn before grinding is important.
Flour tortillas aren't hard either, plenty recipes online.

I think it's outrageous that you can't even buy hygiene articles or medicines with SNAP, and in that way it'd make sense that something so non-nutritious like candy shouldn't be allowed? Alcohol isn't allowed either for example, despite the fact that beer would be (at least marginally) more nutritious than candy.
So other than increasing the stigma already associated with SNAP, is it really problematic to ban candy? Even if it's not a major cost point, the principle of "poor people are too dumb to budget themselves, so we won't let them buy necessities like diapers and tampons... but we'll gladly let them buy candy" just feels wrong to me?
But if you break it in half, you'll have 2 bars, and that's like 50% off! Break it again, 50+50 that's 100% off! Why stop there?! Trump did say he was gonna cut prices by 700%.
Canadian here, I remember years ago going to the US, we were at par for money, and a candy bar in the US was like $1 or $2. So the $2 chocolate bar was $2 for us too.

Gas stations, or department stores around me gouge the shit out of you for snacks/candy. Easily $5-6cad for a chocolate bar. A dollar store though, usually sells an Oh Henry (~58g) for $1.25 or $2 for a 'share size' (the 2 smaller bars in one package ~82g).

They're about the largest ones you can buy lol. It's a super king sized that is two full sized bars in the package. Roughly 150g total, and 720kcal for the whole thing.
This particular store is also inflated. The same thing is $3.29 at the store by me.
I'm willing to bet not even a super market. Probably some overpriced gas station/quick stop kind of place. Those are the ones that tend to inflate the prices like this, catching people getting gas that want a quick snack.

Or I'm reading the fine print on the packaging wrong, in which case it says 120 calories per 1/6th of the pack, which would bring it out to 720 calories, or, two bars smaller than the "king size," which seems deceptive, considering the packaging says it's a "super king 2 bars."

This follows my conspiracy theory that grocery stores in areas with high SNAP benefits ussge increase the prices on everything significantly. I have some family in an area where a lot of people rely on SNAP, and spent $20 on a pack of five hot dogs.

How in the world are you getting that the bar is 2lbs? No one makes a 2lb candy bar; the size would be huge. The bar in the picture certainly isn't big enough to be 2lbs. Googling shows a Reese's Fast Break Super King to be 5.25oz total, or $1.236/oz.
Why is it SNAP eligible? This is what happens when we just pay out without regulating it, whereas Medicare does negotiate prices. It's the same with student loans+tuition.
It's eligible because it's food. It prevents starvation. Plus it's hard to micromanage what poor people eat. On top of that, poor grandmas with diabetes can use it to prevent a coma if their sugar is dangerously low.
In Texas, candy bars aren't eligible. Neither are soft drinks, including uncaffeinated diet drinks, but ice cream, cake, pies, and chocolate milk are still eligible for now. But they're planning to take that away from poor people too. Also "luxury" meats like steak.
After that I imagine they plan to make poor people eat out of dirty buckets filled with offal and rotting vegetables.

Red Mill, great company imo, when I was keto I loved their gluten free options to faux "breading". I had a pretty decent tempura/tonkatsu recipe.

Of course sheâs lying to them lmao. Sheâs a tweaker. Has been for 20 years. She also gets disability because her stupid ass hurt herself 15 years ago during one of her mandated community service assignments when she got arrested for possession, and that disability waives her work requirement. Even though her only actual disability is that sheâs dumb as fuck.
But Iâll also give you context. I grew up in Oklahoma. Half the state is on meth. The overlap of people on SNAP in Oklahoma and people on meth is almost just a single circle.

I think it's outrageous that you can't even buy hygiene articles or medicines with SNAP, and in that way it'd make sense that something so non-nutritious like candy shouldn't be allowed? Alcohol isn't allowed either for example, despite the fact that beer would be (at least marginally) more nutritious than candy.
So other than increasing the stigma already associated with SNAP, is it really problematic to ban candy? Even if it's not a major cost point, the principle of "poor people are too dumb to budget themselves, so we won't let them buy necessities like diapers and tampons... but we'll gladly let them buy candy" just feels wrong to me?

Canadian here, I remember years ago going to the US, we were at par for money, and a candy bar in the US was like $1 or $2. So the $2 chocolate bar was $2 for us too.
Now this US$6.49 is basically CA$10, it is insane!

What type of store is this in?
Gas stations, or department stores around me gouge the shit out of you for snacks/candy. Easily $5-6cad for a chocolate bar. A dollar store though, usually sells an Oh Henry (~58g) for $1.25 or $2 for a 'share size' (the 2 smaller bars in one package ~82g).
Still not great, but much better than $6.50 (USD I assume)

While true that originally it also meant "balance" (in late latin we later got the word bilanx for scales - literally two plates), lb is for latin libra, and it was an actual specific weight (with a corresponding economical value in the Roman as coin) in use since the Roman republic, and it has remained in use for more than two millennia all over the world (with slighly different values depending on time and place, but usually between 350-450grams). It's not an accident the the UK pound stirling coin still has the same L shaped symbol ÂŁ, same as the italian lira, etc

I just looked up the prices for a chocolate bar here in Denmark, The price for a 40-50g chocolate bar is around $2 USD in supermarkets.
We don't have the ones OP posted, but the price for a 50g Mars bar is $2.20 USD. And that price includes 25% VAT.
Without VAT it's $1.84 USD.
So the price in the image seems insane.

They're about the largest ones you can buy lol. It's a super king sized that is two full sized bars in the package. Roughly 150g total, and 720kcal for the whole thing.
This particular store is also inflated. The same thing is $3.29 at the store by me.

Funny how they say it's 120 calories per 1/8th of the pack đ Yeah guys, that's how people eat candy bars.

The online nutrition information for a king size is similar, in that it says 150 calories for 1/3 of the bar. So the individual one is about 450 calories, while 2 of them is 960, 60 calories more than it should be.
Or I'm reading the fine print on the packaging wrong, in which case it says 120 calories per 1/6th of the pack, which would bring it out to 720 calories, or, two bars smaller than the "king size," which seems deceptive, considering the packaging says it's a "super king 2 bars."
Just deceptive marketing and shrinkflation, all wrapped up in one shitty package!

This follows my conspiracy theory that grocery stores in areas with high SNAP benefits ussge increase the prices on everything significantly. I have some family in an area where a lot of people rely on SNAP, and spent $20 on a pack of five hot dogs.

Gotta disagree with the "no one will pay for it" part of your comment though. People can't get enough of anything that's bad for them! How in the world are you getting that the bar is 2lbs? No one makes a 2lb candy bar; the size would be huge. The bar in the picture certainly isn't big enough to be 2lbs. Googling shows a Reese's Fast Break Super King to be 5.25oz total, or $1.236/oz.

It's eligible because it's food. It prevents starvation. Plus it's hard to micromanage what poor people eat. On top of that, poor grandmas with diabetes can use it to prevent a coma if their sugar is dangerously low.
In Texas, candy bars aren't eligible. Neither are soft drinks, including uncaffeinated diet drinks, but ice cream, cake, pies, and chocolate milk are still eligible for now. But they're planning to take that away from poor people too. Also "luxury" meats like steak.
After that I imagine they plan to make poor people eat out of dirty buckets filled with offal and rotting vegetables.
