Yeah, don't use Omarchy, not sure why anyone would need to since there are versions with more stable support and a myriad of other free options for every niche. The site lists many great reasons not to use it, that is appreciated.

I don't use Cloudflare but I'll say that's probably the hardest service for people to leave because it's been the easiest to set up and forget.

Now my one gripe. The People to Avoid category is a weird omelette that put together multiple lists of people and brands them all as fascists to avoid. It's a set of massive purity test retcons that are not productive because it mixes overt bigots (Yarvin) and Silicon Valley grifters (Dorsey) with people that are living foundations of open source who are accused of odd behaviour.

Is rms going around harassing women? Cuz the last talk I watched of him he was battling cancer. (I have read the Stallman Report, but as far as I interpret it he is just trying to make sense of normally taboo topics by writing it out, even if the way he writes it out people feel harmed or creeped out about it because it doesn't match today's accepted norms.) I wouldn't ask him for dating advice but I wouldn't hesitate to ask him for computer advice. Louis Rossman has an opinion that I believe is wrong, but not one he holds strongly enough that he would discriminate or disrespect a customer over it or let it interfere with the goals of owning goods you buy.

Yes, question the questionable parts, but to avoid them altogether is excessive IMHO, each should be taken case-by-case.

Everyone, without exception, is flawed in certain ways. While there are people that make their flaws their whole identity, which you should avoid, for those who don't, you have accept to a certain degree to achieve solidarity and accomplish things bigger than themselves. That degree doesn't have to be charitable as me, but my opinion is that lists that make it seem all equally bad is disingenuous.

lemmyvore@feddit.nl · 16 pts · 1d (5 replies)

If those individuals want to distance themselves from a Nazi movement, they can do so. They can put out statements clarifying their association. RMS battling cancer is an extreme case.

Rentlar@lemmy.ca · 19 pts · 1d (2 replies)

Right in the paraphrased quote declaring Rossman a transphobe he doesn't care enough to be trans-exclusive, in fact I'd argue the main point is that the culture war is stupid and unproductive, he'd prefer to be inclusive because it's irrelevant, that seems like clarification to me and it's the author muddying the waters up with the bad paraphrasing. His organization FULU is funded by an organization called FUTO led by someone who is a loose acquaintance of a fascist supporter (fixed). I know almost exactly how Rossman picked up some chud-like opinions, it's because he got bullied and screwed over so hard in New York, not from any other relationship. No evidence has been presented that he has anything to do with Omarchy, MAGA, or right-wing fascist movement, including that comment.

I want people not to confuse some latent opinions with a lack of integrity.

::: spoiler The full comment for context

I have my own idea of what a man or a woman is that I am going to guess is different from the politician in question. That being said, bringing this shit up all the time is absolutely  counterproductive and useless.  Especially when it has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

Imagine if I was talking to a politician who weighed 400 pounds and agreed with me on an issue that mattered. And let's say that person did not like being referred to as fat because they do not think they are overweight. Would it be incumbent upon me to point out that they are fat? What benefit does that do for me? If this person is trying to help me not get screwed over by companies that lie and cheat to get laws passed in their favor so they can rob us blind, it's not really important in that moment that I point out that that person is in fact obese. What their personal belief of "obesity" is is a useless discussion that has nothing to do with my own actions and identity.

What people choose to do in their own homes or what they choose to call themselves is their business and is not something I care to discuss.

What matters more than that to me is what people tell me I am not allowed to do in my own home with the products that I bought and paid for. That is an issue that is much more important to me. :::

I’ve been to a few conferences and talks where Stallman was in the audience.

He often spoke up and asked why things weren’t free open software, even after one was explained how it would be a non-profit educational web service.

He wasn’t wrong, but he was often a dick about it.

He also rarely had shoes on, just socks. At least around the MIT campus in those days.

People around the same political position that I don't like are all trots.

There's just too many good Linux distros out there for me to even entertain the idea of ever giving that shit a chance.

Protest if you like, but I'm going to say: Stop talking about Omarchy if you want to hurt it.

The people who like it are going to like it, the ones who don't won't, and screaming about it just brings it to the attention of more people who never would have heard about it.

hikaru755@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 11h (3 replies)

Disagree on that. Those 18 million are in big parts going to go into marketing and reputation washing, specifically to people that might not be tuned into the broader Linux or even tech ecosystem. Those will not by themselves start looking up the background of a shiny Linux distro that is being hailed by everyone as a super nice and easy way to get into Linux. Some education can go a long way there.

MangoCats@feddit.it · 0 pts · 5h (2 replies)

If people "get into" Linux via Omarchy - then decide its roots are distateful, distro hopping is very easy for them to do. Similarly, if Linux experimenters give Omarchy a try ignorant of the politics behind it - I doubt very many will remain "locked in" for long. If you 18 million number refers to Omarchy's own download count, please try to keep in perspective just how over-inflated and easily gamed those counts always are.

I find it a stretch to think that Omarchy will be whitewashing brownshirt politics sufficiently to win converts because "hey, these guys are alright, look at what a nifty distro they made..."

hikaru755@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 4h (1 reply)

If people "get into" Linux via Omarchy - then decide its roots are distateful, distro hopping is very easy for them to do.

My point is that they might not ever get to the point of noticing the rot at its roots. Sure, if they notice it's easy, but they need to even get to that point. Also, even if we know it's easy, it might still be intimidating. They may remember how much work the jump from Windows/Apple to Omarchy was and assume it's gonna be similar from one Linux distro to another.

If you 18 million number refers to Omarchy's own download count

I was referring to donation amounts. 18 million dollars. That's the most recent number I've seen that has been donated or promised to Omarchy, and that kind of money can do a whole lot when it's pumped into reputation building.

I find it a stretch to think that Omarchy will be whitewashing brownshirt politics sufficiently to win converts because "hey, these guys are alright, look at what a nifty distro they made..."

Then you're more optimistic than me. Those politics are not advertised on the frontpage*, and most people who are not already tuned into that are not gonna go hunting for it. For most it's not gonna go further than "Oh my favorite tech influencer is rocking this awesome looking setup, gonna try that", and from there on why would they look at anything other than the docs.

* They do have that "Backed by the oligarchy" section, and I immediately wanted to vomit when seeing that, but colleagues of mine didn't see the issue with that until I explicitly spelled it out. We very much do live in a bubble.

MangoCats@feddit.it · 1 pts · 3h

I still think that giving it oxygen is a mistake, but if you insist on making that mistake, I'd go for "coloring the air" around it in an easily recognized shade and odor:

Omarchy: the new Linux distro labeled "Goose-steppy" by the community, is being developed based on donations from X, Y and Z... At present, it offers nothing of value vs these established distros: ____, _____, _____. The community is relatively un-knowledgeable and un-helpful, and the technical aspects are less well refined than the established competition. Etc. etc. etc.

Remind the world that the trains don't actually run on-time any better under Fascists in practice. They have too many conflicting priorities, and ultimately those lead to the trains not running at all.

verily@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 23 pts · 1d (1 reply)

I don't think it's possible to argue Rossman isn't some degree of personally transphobic (for context, his video is about Brianna Titone, who is the first openly transgender state legislator elected in Colorado, and he is clearly referencing some degree of disagreement with her identity).

That much being said, he's highlighting, to conservatives in his own audience, the fact that he wants to be both respectful and actually look beyond those personal beliefs to affect positive change. And based on his larger corpus of work, I don't think that's dishonest in any way.

Rossman doesn't use his influence to lobby against trans rights. I don't even think anybody would have known he had some personal issues until he mentioned them in a specific example that encourages people to set their own issues aside, for a positive cause.

Rentlar@lemmy.ca · 6 pts · 1d

Precisely. Showing a basic level of respect to work together doesn't require agreeing on anything.

OilyArena@lemmy.ml · 4 pts · 1d (5 replies)

I read that as "I don't accept trans peoples gender, but will act like I do if it benefits me or my cause", is there another interpretation I'm missing?

Aatube@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 11 pts · 1d

it’s more “i won’t argue or discuss it at all because it has nothing to do with me or my cause”, not do’s or don’t

Rentlar@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 1d (3 replies)

No, he's not one to pretend, he's saying that what he or anyone else thinks about trans people just not relevant to him in virtually everything he does, fixing devices or supporting or rallying against a trans politicians' position on other issues like technology.

To give a separate example, does Alice Weidel's sexual orientation have any relevance to your opinion of the German right-wing fascist party leader? No, it's similarly irrelevant, and I can make assumptions, but you don't have to tell me you support or oppose gay marriage to know that.

orc_princess@lemmy.ml · 4 pts · 1d (2 replies)

Which is true, but his opinions are still transphobic lol. I don't hate the guy for this, but let's not pretend he's not transphobic.

Rentlar@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 1d (1 reply)

I don't know about the sources. If you read some of the sources, for example DHH's own words in his blog posts, while you find conservative grievances which is certainly fair game for disagreement, there are no smoking guns of far right behaviour.

The comparison of omarchy's design philosophy is particularly egregious. The philosophy is opinionated software. What does consuming a product without being in personal control of every single detail have to do with politics?

I recently inherited a Commodore 64 from my dad. It's from the 80's. While all I could do with it was

  • type text and see it displayed
  • load some games from cassette tapes

It was extremely refreshing to see that literally nothing was going on in the system other that what I saw on the screen.

strawberry_enjoyer42@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 5h

Eh, it's probably not a realistically managable project. I might actually have more luck forking the NetBSD kernel to use compat_linux by default, which would achieve decent compatibility with the Linux ABI.

Also, if they were vocally hateful against any other marginalised community, it would be totally unacceptable to the vast majority of Linux users.

antianarchist@sopuli.xyz · -6 pts · 1d (7 replies)

Oh, there is no question about how evil Hyprland devs are. Don’t forget that tankies are pro-Russia and pro-Russia is anti-trans. Same shit, different boat.

strawberry_enjoyer42@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 3h (4 replies)

I don't even understand these "tankies" as they're called. I thought they were Communists, but if they support a Capitalist country (Russia), then they're not very Communist, are they?

elixir_fan@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 2h

Communists that support Russia have critical support, which means we support some of what they do, such as supporting Cuba during a genocidal blockade, but we still have valid criticisms. You won't see any of us claim Russia is morally good or some nonsense.

Communists don't judge countries based on their perceived moral character. Russia, like all countries, acts in the interest of its own ruling class. Right now the interest of their ruling class is aligned with anti-imperialist forces. We understand that imperialism is the primary contradiction, and that as long as we live under a unipolar world order the global majority will only get poorer and more exploited, that climate change will inevitably kill most of us and that those who survive will be tied to the same exploitative forces.

The only reason why some of us come across as "pro-Russia" is because we're often debunking imperialist propaganda. As long as people are willing to read beyond wikipedia or a genocide-denying newspaper, we're fine discussing events with a lot more nuance than we get credit for. But it's a lot easier to pretend we're crazy Putin-loving tankies, so that's what you see here.

antianarchist@sopuli.xyz · 0 pts · 3h (2 replies)

And that’s where things start to get interesting. Wait until you learn that Stalin/Lenin weren’t really communists, came to power in a non-democratic way, which is basically something only right-wing does. And yeah, tankies are not really the smartest breed. Same category as rednecks. Too much lead was in the water when they grew up.

strawberry_enjoyer42@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 1 pts · 2h (1 reply)

I'm well aware of all the fake Communists out there. I hate them so fucking much.

I do object to those last two statements, though. They've been intentionally miseducated and indoctrinated by the government; cultivated to not think critically, to question nothing, and support whatever they're told—basically, they're brainwashed.

P.S. btw, why is your username "antianarchist"?

antianarchist@sopuli.xyz · 0 pts · 2h

As form of a protest to the so called Fediverse Anarchist Flotilla, consisting of a few instances who are maintained by tankies, and not by anarchists as you would expect. I guess they’re the same category as those you call fake Communists.

I agree with what you said about the conservative US citizens. They are deliberately shaped by the current and former governments, since basically Reagan was dismantling the confederation.

How is this not straight up FUD? DHH is a very good developer, better than 90% of his detractors. Omarchy is popular for the same fucking reason that Linux was never the desktop of choice until Windows literally forced people to use it. It's a good default configuration of a collection of applications, put together in a cohesive, but opinionated way, by a person actually using the product AND wanting to be productive with it.

DHH is a very good developer

He has good qualities, or he'd have never become where he is today, but in case you haven't been around Rubyists much, most of us follow MINASWAN, and he clearly doesn't. More importantly, he's also shown support for Tommy Robinson in his own blog. It doesn't take a genius to see what he's doing.

‘Oh come on!’ was my initial reaction, but I’ve read your website, and thought: ‘hey, that sounds nice!’

I’m not going to migrate all my Arch boxes (basically all my x86/64 boxes), but I may use it somewhere else, just to test the idea.

I loved the idea of Atomic Fedora, but it did not work seamlessly, and to my experience, it did the opposite: worse than a regular Fedora. I needed to babysit it, and also it didn’t auto switch the previous working system for me. Perhaps it’s me who missed something. As an idea, though, I think that’s what should click to a normie: you tell them to install this distro, get your handful of apps as Flatpaks and forget about the system, as it manages itself.

To keep this topic alive, let me ask you a question: how would you know what’s a working state, so you need to return to the previous one? Does it mean it didn’t boot, or anything else? Just yesterday, I had faced a weird issue: my old trusty MacBook Pro serving as a server now, had no WiFi (it has Ethernet port, but temporarily I cannot use it, so it’s wireless). The broadcom-wl driver switched to linux-headers, which I didn’t have installed. I don’t remember me changing anything, and fortunately that was an easy fix (with an external USB WiFi card): just install Linux headers, and it would rebuild itself. So I’m just curious whether it’s even possible to find out a stupid issue a normie user may face.

On the other hand, perhaps the distros like this are meant to be installed by someone skilled to then be used mostly unattended by a regular user.

yxc999@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 1d (4 replies)

‘Oh come on!’ was my initial reaction, but I’ve read your website, and thought: ‘hey, that sounds nice!’

Haha, I know I know, yet another Arch-based distro in this economy, but I really feel like this does fill a gap, thank you for your interest!

On the other hand, perhaps the distros like this are meant to be installed by someone skilled to then be used mostly unattended by a regular user.

My aim is to make this both appealing for the normie who just wants to use it like "SteamOS but with CachyOS speed" and run Flatpaks on it AND for the more experienced user who wants all the benefits of Arch but with a little more peace of mind.

how would you know what’s a working state, so you need to return to the previous one?

As the website explains, it automatically falls back to the last working state if it doesn't boot, but obviously it can't detect if something is messed up but still booting like in your example. In that case you just reboot and manually select the last working state (wip but kinda working already) just like a BTRFS snapshot, BUT it only rolls back the system itself, NOT your files. A BTRFS snapshot will also roll back your documents or whatever so my system, when it's stable and tested, will be superior in every way to BTRFS snapshots.

helix@feddit.org · 4 pts · 1d (3 replies)

A BTRFS snapshot will also roll back your documents or whatever

Not necessarily. You can have your documents on one subvolume and the root system on another. I version and snapshot my root disk and home disk separately.

yxc999@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 1d (2 replies)

True, if you set it up out of the box with CachyOS it rolls the entire disk back, but I forgot that option was a thing, my bad!

Trail@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d

Don't take it the wrong way, but if you "forget" such a basic thinkg, are you really suited for creating and maintaining a whole distro? Maybe you need a few years more experience first?

Am I crazy for saying that DHH is a far-right plant and Omarchy is a plot to destroy FOSS from the inside?

elixir_fan@lemmy.ml · 23 pts · 20h

DHH is far right, clearly, I'm not sure they have a plan for destroying FOSS, they seem to be trying to normalize their worldview (which is bad enough)

Balldowern@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 14h (1 reply)

If you want to point at those trying to destroy FOSS from within, point at Microsoft & Apple.

innermachine@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 6h

How exactly is that? If nothing the efforts of microslop and Apple have made FOSS all the more appealing!

skrlet13@feddit.cl · 1 pts · 5h

I'd say he wants to purge the "woke" in FOSS

Vendetta9076@sh.itjust.works · -5 pts · 21h (5 replies)

Yes. You are. You people are acting like Omanchy existing will bring down democracy as we know it. Its just a project. Sure its got some weird backing and DHH is a scumbag, but y'all need to calm the fuck down. Just ignore it. It will go away.

drmoose@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 13h

It's not just a program it's a movement. It has budget of 13m usd that comes from corporations who have maybe 0.01% of their user base on linux. Why do you think that is? Why would 1Password and friends do this?

some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org · 5 pts · 17h (1 reply)

Just because their goal may not be explicitly pushing far right nationalism doesn’t mean it’s ok to ignore. They must be shunned. Their political messaging is hate and none of us should support or condone that.

Vendetta9076@sh.itjust.works · -2 pts · 16h

But we aren't supporting or condoning it. We also aren't shunning them. We are signal boosting this nonsense "distro" into the stratosphere. I am extremely online when it comes to tech and Linux. The first I heard of Omarchy is complaints on Lemmy. I've seen like three total people talk about it outside of lemmy. All of them were easy to skip ads. The actions here instead flood the feed with news about it over and over and over.

Normally the impact of a small group of people wouldnt matter but we are the exact demographic that they want reach with this. and y'all are doing the work for them.

refalo@programming.dev · 5 pts · 17h (1 reply)

They won't listen... here's a response to a similar comment I saw in another thread:

SocialistVibes01@lemmy.ml · 7 pts · 9h

How's that unreasonable, fascism did a comeback because it wasn't completely kept at bay.

...The heck happened?

I've been under a rock for a bit.

Explain to me: why is there so much hype (and controversy) around some Hyperland Arch Linux config, within like a month? Is this some astroturfing thing?

Reygle@lemmy.world · 22 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Disclaimer: I only know bits of this story and am missing details.

Creator vibe codes configs, makes a "distro"

Creator says fairly fucked up things online, effectively a "dog whistle" gathering right aligned attention and money- and a quite a lot of it.

Begins hiring similarly minded people, claiming "the money will be spent" on the distro

All of it wreaks of BS.

brucethemoose@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 21h

Yeah. Kinda feels like OpenClaw and a few 'trends' before that.

deathbird@mander.xyz · 12 pts · 21h

Positive polarization: a lot of rich people are donating a lot of money to it, maybe (probably?) because the creator is well-connected and the OS makes lots of references to AI. Negative polarization: The creator has bad opinions, and the OS is very AI-forward.

KernelTale@programming.dev · 7 pts · 10h

They bought coverage. There is 0 reasons to use Omarchy over well.. about anything. It's like using Ubuntu despite Mint existing, but they also lack reputation, are evil, have had relatively many vulnerabilities in a short time frame, and have shady backing. I refuse to believe that anyone who promotes Omarchy daily drives it nor does not receive monetary compensation.

T4V0@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 23h

Probably the digital ocean donation.

mctoasterson@reddthat.com · 24 pts · 1d (16 replies)

I am all on board with letting people know when open source is a bit too aligned with major companies or is somehow compromised.

I have no intent or need to use Omarchy.

This sites list of YouTubers to shun however is a bit too "purity test" for me. The reasons listed are, let's say extremely tepid in many cases.

I've never heard Jeff Geerling talk about any issue other than homelab stuff like hardware pricing and availability. His religious and personal views were not apparent to me at all.

I watched the Louis Rossmann video mentioned with the CO State Rep, and Louis was respectful and platformed this individuals commentary on the subject of privacy issues for a long time in the video. Generally Rossmann seems to criticize the living hell out of politicians left, right, and center.

I guess all I am saying is... Use whatever products you do or don't want to for your own reasons but, I disagree with the concept that I should brigade specific creators because they support Open Source but not 100% of my particular basket of other issues. We need Open Source to grow and need to reach out to diverse groups who can find value in it.

I will continue to listen to both Craft Computing Jeff (as far left as it is possible to be on social and gender issues) and Jeff Geerling (who is apparently conservative on these same issues) because I'm listening to them talk about homelab stuff, not telling me who to vote for etc.

Omarchy isn't even good. It shouldn't even be called a distro, it does nothing new. It's basically a script installer for arch

r1veRRR@feddit.org · -7 pts · 22h (1 reply)

Sure, and Ubuntu is just a script installer for the kernel. Dear lord, is it a requirement to be so insufferable and asocial when you use Linux? My work PC is Linux, I hope I manage to not succumb to the incredible urge to lack any and all empathy, assume my way of using a product is the only correct way, and pretending that fiddling for hours with your system is a sane thing for everyone to want.

Also the phrase "agentic Linux for the age of agents" makes my brain bleed.

drmoose@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 13h (2 replies)

It comes with claude.md and some skills. Basically nothing you can't setup in 15 minutes and a claude prompt on any linux distribution yourself. They claim "because omarchy is just text configs llms understand it very well" when all linux and all distributions are configured through text.

Agentic linux is awesome though but you'd bave to be brain damaged to do it on mutable distro.

someone@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 6h (1 reply)

So you're saying atomic fedora linux and just giving an agent lots of access is safer than omarchy?

drmoose@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2h

Yes, immutable linux can be made much safer. With overlays none of the projects compete for config so agents are much less likely to introduce bugs and access important context by accident basically just by reading explicit immutable configs. We're rolling everything on nixos now and it's really good. Immutable linux has basically won imo.

Unless you can tie the development of the operating system to the explicit promotion of those odious views or the creation of actual material harm then you are just generating noise that at best informs the highly unpopular minority of people who give a shit about the political perspectives of the person who delivers their fucking milk, and at worst serves as a positive advertisement for the project because it's upsetting people that everybody doesn't like anyway.

If people join the far-right to own the left they were already far-right:

someone@lemmy.today · 15 pts · 6h (1 reply)

I am not trying to argue this, but some people will say "It just looks like a linux distro that is designed to be more agentic friendly, even if some of its backers have unscrupulous pasts." What is the response to this? Because I'm sure it's vibe-coded and insecure, but there aren't really linux distros that are agentic first distros and some computer enthusiasts really like AI. And yes, people can just install Jan or LM Studio on their own in another distro, but some people may want open source code and linux designed for AI. I know people on Lemmy often hate AI, so please don't hate me for writing this. I just don't totally get the reasoning aside from some people involved in the project seem to be assholes... or is that the reasoning?

To be honest, if not for security concerns I'd probably try this distro if it weren't somehow linked to anti-trans things, which makes anything completely toxic. But I looked at the Omarchy page just to see what it looked like and conceptually for people interested in agentic stuff, it didn't look that bad, it seemed sort of interesting.

Trans people are some of the best network engineers and coders out there and greatly help the open source community. Any open source project that isn't kind to trans people should be ignored. Maybe that's the point? That normally a project like this linked to anything anti-trans would be rejected by the open source community and it's only through soulless corporations and right wing tech bros that this is existing?

JamesBoeing737MAX@sopuli.xyz · 4 pts · 5h

Well, the AI (LLM stuff) is right wing. It makes the last thing neoliberalism didn't make obsolete useless. Who cares if you actually understand what you're doing and are able to do it way better than a LLM. "You are now useless. Fuck you."

The neoliberal ideology now made everyone useless. How can a person still be a neoliberal when you can see none of us really have any value (intellectual or otherwise), we never did. The only thing humans had was pretending to be useful (or competent in any way) and they are taking it away from us little by little.

That's why I'm a leftist, I've seen basic human dignity being taken away from people since my childhood and experienced repression (as much as a minority in a non third world country can) and I know many people have it worse.

I mean, Redstar... I think that'd technically that'd be socialist, though.

More seriously, I think most of the non-fork distros don't tolerate that crap. Think Arch, Debian, Void, etc.

Something I'm keeping an eye on is this project. No clue what, if anything, will come of it.

Personally, I use Artix, and I'm considering NetBSD. I'm also consodering making my own Unix-like distro, possibly using the NetBSD kernel.

akunohana@piefed.blahaj.zone · 3 pts · 1d

Never looked into that. Maybe Alpine though?

ytg@sopuli.xyz · 3 pts · 1d (3 replies)

Not really, just use something normal that's there to provide software. Fedora (but remember to install video codecs), Arch (but use the AUR with caution), Debian (if you're okay with using neolithic-age software), SUSE (European Fedora with AppArmor instead of SELinux), Void (but software availability can suffer).

The BSDs seem cool but it really depends on your hardware if you can run them. NixOS is awesome technology but has problematic business relations[^1] so you might want to take a look at GNU Guix.

[^1]: I'm not totally sure what's going on there. There was something about a community split between Nix (the package manager) and NixOS (the distro) but I don't remember which side is which. Using NixOS with Lix instead of Nix might be what you want.

VeganCheesecake@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 1 pts · 1d (2 replies)

I don't know for sure. They announced it one day, but I haven't really caught that much public discussion before that.

It might also be more accurate to say they switched the default selection, since you are able to select the MAC solution in the installer of the desktop versions, it's just that SEL is now the default selection instead off AppArmor.

markstos@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 23h

ClouDNS for DNS is good and cheap.

The more services you expect to be bundled with one provider, the more you will pushed towards bigger companies.

Good post, but I don't like the mention of people and things that are not related to Omarchy. It gives feelings of just personal opinion. It should stick to the cause of boycotting Omarchy.

thingsiplay@lemmy.ml · 5 pts · 1d

Agreed. Also this entire presentation looks too much emotional. It should stick to an informal type of presentation to be taken seriously. Edit: Also I'm highly against lists of people to avoid. Discussed this again and again, as this comes up again and again with these topics. Extremely dangerous thing to do!

CaffeinatedCubits@programming.dev · 1 pts · 7h (1 reply)

It's pointing out the supporters of the project and highlighting their fascist ties. Boycott them too.

somegeek@programming.dev · 1 pts · 5h

The "people to avoid" section mostly has nothing to do with Omarchy

schnurrito@discuss.tchncs.de · 5 pts · 1d (7 replies)

Congratulations, you've just managed to advertise the exact thing you oppose. I would likely have given zero attention or thought to Omarchy today if I hadn't seen this thread.

Also, I just read that "The Omarchy Doctrine" page; if someone seriously thinks that is a "fascist creed", then that is very interesting. About the person who thinks that. If someone could help me figure out what part of that is supposed to be outrageous or especially controversial, I'd appreciate any help!

Aatube@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 1d (6 replies)

Heritage is duty

Command is service

From “Hold the line”:

Omarchy is bringing that ethos back, and dropping the Code-of-Conduct struggle sessions and identity-overload nonsense that has plagued open source for far too long.

granted, i think the red alert website is misinterpreting the essay it cites, which analyses Omarchy overall as a fascist movement rather than the specific doctrine page

schnurrito@discuss.tchncs.de · -1 pts · 1d (5 replies)

"Heritage is duty" refers to the heritage of computing, not of human beings. Completely non-outrageous in context.

"Command is service", ok, that explains why Omarchy isn't a democracy. I think many other FOSS projects aren't either, so I don't see anything outrageous in that either.

And you may of course disagree with their opinion on "Code-of-Conduct struggle sessions and identity-overload nonsense" (not words I would have used). Many completely well-meaning people hold different opinions on those topics.

Aatube@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 5 pts · 23h (1 reply)

To elaborate: Struggle sessions only refer to, of course, the 20th-century Chinese Communist denunciation rallies. Branding code-of-conduct enforcement with an explicit reference to communism and the emphasis on identity politics clearly asserts belief in the Cultural Marxism conspiracy theory.

schnurrito@discuss.tchncs.de · 3 pts · 22h

OK, I wasn't familiar with that term; TIL. Again, it's not terminology I would personally have used; calling it a "fascist creed" over that still sounds like an exaggeration.

Aatube@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 1d

Not like that. There is a difference.

CaffeinatedCubits@programming.dev · 4 pts · 7h

What are they getting for their money? Fork it if it's so good.

thingsiplay@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 1d (4 replies)

Forking would mean the main developers does not work on it. They would need to work on their own. Do giving money will ensure the project stays up (in theory). Forking does not solve the issues you have with the mainline project automatically.

deathbird@mander.xyz · 0 pts · 18h (3 replies)

The only issue anyone seems to be taking with the main line project is the dev. Half of his design choices are completely uncontroversial on the other half would never generate this much fucking heat.

thingsiplay@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 18h (2 replies)

Eh no, there are two big issues with Omarchy: a) political issues with the dev, b) many big, dumb and very dangerous security issues.

deathbird@mander.xyz · 1 pts · 18h (1 reply)

It is really funny that I have no idea what security issues there are with the software, because everybody seems to be concerned with anything but.

thingsiplay@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 18h

That's unfortunate that you are not informed. The best part is, that even DHH himself agrees that Omarchy has lot of bad security issues. His argument is that these get reported and fixed, so it will be secure someday (so his argument, but ignoring that vibe coding is never secure). Here is a part of the interview with Brodie in YouTube (about 10 minutes): https://youtu.be/M8gVXNlZFFg

And the list goes on and on. These are not just security issues... these are dumb issues that should not have been there. Its incompetence and negligence. Every software has issues and bugs and security issues. But why don't the other distributions have this many dumb issues like these? And it won't get better, because its heavily vibe coded.

So I hope you are informed now.

lemmyvore@feddit.nl · 0 pts · 1d

What are they getting for their money?

It's a marketing campaign to devalue Linux in the public eye.

If they can state that AI came up with a "good enough" distro you know what non-savvy people will think about it: that making a distro is "easy", and "anybody can do it", and that anybody involved with making distros "manually" is redundant and giving themselves airs etc.

It has already happened to many other fields.

UnequalExchange@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d (3 replies)

I have no idea what I just read (since I know next to nothing about programming and linux) but then I read this:

"Believe in redemption, not permanent condemnation. People can be wrong and still be welcome back when they step away from harm. This is not about outrage or scolding, but rather attempting repair and healing for FOSS and the world."

...

"Believe in the redemption of middle aged nazis who know exactly what theyre doing gois , OK?! OK! Happy-Go-Lucky!"

orc_princess@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 1d (2 replies)

I may be too charitable, but I imagine it has to do with how many people, such as colleagues we may have, can fall for this type of shit. We're all able to be reactionary and give in to bs, some of us just have more knowledge and/or more empathy so we're able to see through it much easier. So while DHH may not be redeemable, some dumbass on Twitter who defends DHH may still be redeemed, depending on the choices they make and how much harm they do or don't do along the way.

UnequalExchange@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d (1 reply)

As long as any form of will to power exists, there will be attempts towards facism. The point of open source is that the worst case scenario- something happens and you’ll be able to branch it and run it your way. That’s the whole damn point.

It is suppose to be so surprising- but that’s the life cycle of the modern day world. Leaders act very well towards their consumers and employeee until they get a real foothold to the point of being able to buy congressmen. Then they turn evil.

That’s the thing- they were always evil. They just hid their power level

OK so this is a legit weakness of mine and it has to do with too many options. Creator aside what makes this distribution interesting and what other flavors resemble it? I’ve been trying for years to find the right flavor for me, I want something I update minimally and when I do update it doesn’t break. I’m using lmde note but I’ve had to wrangle it in and all I’m running on it is steam Nvidia gpu, yams, plex. I want to self host other apps but I’m terrified of the base install becoming unmanageable. I want this server to run games also.

deathbird@mander.xyz · 3 pts · 20h

Bread on Penguins has a focus on minimalism and might have some interesting videos, though she herself uses dwm.

Nix as a system is meant to be highly replicable.

Me, I just try to make a flashback point before doing anything funky, but that's nothing remarkable to aspire to.

MrKiosc@reddthat.com · 2 pts · 21h (1 reply)

Omarchy is a essentially an Arch setup with Hyprland.

However, if you don't want frequent and possibly unstable updates, I'd suggest staying away from Arch in it's entirety and trying Fedora instead. It's got plenty of OoTB setups to choose from without having to mannualy install and configure them.

elixir_fan@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 20h

Rolling releases as a whole are a lot better these days, but I agree Fedora is excellent (and it helps to not need the AUR at all)

Yes baby ! What a great page. Thank you, to this Brennan dude(tte) for creating it, and quick apolls to others for me primitively raging against every sign of this nazi/fascist club/product, and the whole nazi/fascist enshittification/normalization of 'open source'.

One nasty surprise in secondary list: 'suckless' - oh well, can't win them all :-(

Let's post this great page as a standard reply to all posts/mentions of omacom/omarchy going forward, so all those not knowing, can be warned about what it really is !

[ait] (warning - AI topic tag) Dear anti-ai, if you can muster it, then please lower defences slightly for just a sec: It's really time and energy consuming to follow and document this yucky movement as they are now heavily funded and work/move constantly 24/7. Brennan is a super cool Human, but can't work on this always, all the time. We might need an active agentic system that also work constantly 24/7 to track the whole fascist/nazi network, all its players, update the lists and make it easier for ordinary good peeps to reject and boycott it all. Supervised by a human oc.

helix@feddit.org · 5 pts · 1d

Why?

I mean, I'm not anti-AI completely, but building denylists with AI seems to be a bad idea. Is it really that time consuming that we couldn't just do a git repo and allow merge requests for people to collaborate?

akunohana@piefed.blahaj.zone · -1 pts · 1d

Yeah, suckless was a bummer for sure. :( Although, with their elitist attitude, I'm not surprised. There's supposed to be a fork of their window manager at least, written by a really young person. Can't quite recall its name now...

I wonder if your idea is doable without using LLMs though! :)

+1 from me. People are so happy to boycott projects that are presenting different political views while they don't bat an eye when other projects they back up are similarly political but on the other side of the spectrum.

I agree it'd be best to have apolitical tech initiatives but since people won't be able to have their beliefs to themselves then we just have to agree everyone has the right to have their political opinion tied to the projects that they develop. Sad, but at least honest.

porous_grey_matter@lemmy.ml · 19 pts · 8h

Uh yeah, projects on the side of the political spectrum which hurts people and acts in bad faith are not worth supporting, and projects on the side which protects and helps people are worth supporting, no shit dumbass.

kestrel7_7@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 4h

I don’t think anyone wants apolitical tech except for a few people like you, who haven’t thought about it very much.

I want liberationary tech. The entire reason I got interested in FOSS in the first place was because it forms a natural extension of the liberationary political work that I do in other fields. If you want apolitical software, then why are you interested in linux, which inherently challenges traditional notions of copyright? No tech is apolitical.
