Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters has dubbed Ed Sheeran a “p****” who has “done the wrong thing” amid the ongoing controversy over Macklemore being pulled as a support act from Sheeran’s tour after expressing solidarity with Palestinians on stage.
For anyone who doesn't want to watch the included video: p**** = prick
Edit for formatting
2nd Edit: I have just learned that Waters has very publicly supported Putin in the war on Ukraine saying, that Putin governs carefully and makes decisions based on consensus? So it’s pricks all around in this story.

Censoring "prick" as "p****" makes it sound a lot worse than it actually is. I can think of other five-letter words starting with P..

I’m not sure if the mods allow it, but journalistically I believe using “… p[rick]” or “… p**** [prick]” would have been a clearer way to include it.
A mod bot might be too dumb to get it though, not sure.

the thing with Waters is that he's an oldschool conspiracy nut - so for every reasonable point he makes about 50-100 bullshit points that negate one good point he makes every now and then. He could've said stopped at ceasefire without elaborating and it would've been naive but benign - but he decided to elaborate and it was downhill.

Waters thinks all war, and imperialism, is bad.
Waters thinks that when the war started in Ukraine, Biden should've called Putin and told him to cut it out, because the US is a major world power. Waters thinks (or at least claimed at a concert) that Zelensky should be sitting down and making a deal with Putin for peace, because war is bad so ending it should always be the goal regardless of what you lose or give up... He didn't say that last part, that's me being uncharitable.
I mean, just listen to The Wall and realize he's had almost 50 years to calcify on "War is Bad."
Though, he does correctly point out that every modern US president is a war criminal.

Your underlying point is correct and I agree
But the pedant in me hates this saying. It's almost never true. A clock broken in a very specific way is right twice a day, but how many clocks get broken like that? If they get smashed, and hands fall off, they can't even show a valid time. Even then, they're more likely to just run at the wrong speed, which makes it VERY unlikely they'll show the correct time even once a day. Also most clocks are digital now! If those break, they show nothing!
Thank you for coming to my Tod Talk

Human beings tend to look up to those who are famous and, IMHO, because many if not most of famous people end up interiorizing on their side of that equation that, since so many look up to them, their opinion is more important than that of other people.
I'm not sure if they end up believing that they know better than others in fields that have nothing to do with their expertise, if they're just leveraging that human behaviour and their fame to convince people of something they think is important, or even if they're publicly opiniating in controversial subjects purelly to get more media attention because in their domain more public attention turns into more $$$ for them, but ultimatelly from the outside all 3 motivations yield the same behavior from the famous and hence look the same.
SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca · 12 pts · 1d
Just the sentence "Rock legend slams Ed Sheeran" I immediately thought "let me guess, is it Roger Waters?"
Yup. Roger Waters. He's an extreme tankie that thinks Russia was in the right in invading Ukraine.
Of course that whack job would feel the need to weigh in.
I wish Roger Waters was more like Ed Sheeran and tried to stay out of political discussions they don't know much about. Many musicians live completely different lifestyle than the rest of us and may not be the best moral arbitrators or be the best at doing analysis of geopolitics.
But since we're on the dumbest timeline, maybe Macklemore needs to weigh in on what he thinks of Russia's invasion of Ukraine?
What does Beyonce think about Brexit? Does Taylor Swift have a position on Taiwan independence? These are important things to know when you're listening to fucking music I guess.
mrmaplebar@fedia.io · 18 pts · 1d
I don't agree with Roger Waters' "the West is always in the wrong" worldview, but his music has always been heavily political and opinionated, and is better for it.
Not every band has something to say about society and the world at large, but Pink Floyd and Roger Waters certainly do.
Commercial musicians make music based on what the listeners want to hear. Genuine artists make music based on what they want listeners to hear.
One is marketing, the other is expression.
I find it ridiculous when either side tells artists that they need to stay out of politics or stay in their lane.
cecilkorik@piefed.ca · 5 pts · 1d
I don't agree with most of what Roger Waters says, but I will defend to the death his right to say it, in his music and otherwise. I think that's healthy and absolutely neccessary.
I will also defend the right for me to say what I personally think about all the things he has the right to say. Like that it's too bad he's some idiot tankie who doesn't think Putin has to respect those kind of rights in his country, and how I think that makes him a piece of shit and complicit in Putin's evil. He can still say it though, that's his right, and I like it when pieces of shit advertise themselves.
SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca · 0 pts · 1d
Is it any less ridiculous to not respect someone when they choose to be apolitical? Do you think someone isn't a "genuine artist" when they're apolitical?
That's what's happening here isn't it? Ed Sheeran doesn't want to be involved with politics and is being bullied for "not taking a side."
Manjushri@piefed.social · 9 pts · 1d
Macklemore and those billionaires put Sheeran in the middle of the argument. But you don't get to not pick a side when one side is literally supporting the wanton murder of innocent men, women, and children. I don't think you can be a member of society and remain apolitical when innocent people are being slaughtered.
Is that unfair to Sheeran? Maybe, but I don't care. The guy is worth hundreds of millions of dollars and the loss of this tour is not any more than an inconvenience for him. I side with the innocent children gaza being killed by snipers.
cecilkorik@piefed.ca · 6 pts · 1d
It's not unfair. Imagine if we applied the same logic to the duty to report child abuse: "I'm apolitical, and I want to remain neutral. I don't want to get involved, I just want to do my job and nothing more. I shouldn't have to report abuse of a child if I don't want to. It's not my fault they're getting abused, actually it's unfair to make me get involved in something like this even if I know it is wrong, because it might have consequences for me if I say something about it. Obviously I'm sad the children are getting abused but they should find some other way to deal with that which doesn't involve me."
Manjushri@piefed.social · 4 pts · 1d
A very good point.
Guitar@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1d
Sheeran chose to have Macklemore supporting his tour. With how outspoken Macklemore has been about Palestine for years, it would not be unreasonable to see it as implicit support from Sheeran. He put himself in the middle. He just thought he could keep fence sitting there while he raked in millions.
Not to mention, he has certainly taken a side in plenty of other political events. It's suspisciously just the Palestinian genocide that he doesn't pick a side on. While he caves to Zionist billionaires and calls both sides bad.
protist@retrofed.com · 6 pts · 1d
Sheeran cancelling Macklemore's involvement in his tour based on the stadium owner's political views of Macklemore's political views seems pretty "involved with politics" to me. He was definitely put in a situation where he had to pick a side, but Robert Kraft put him there, not the public who are reacting to his decision-making.
mrmaplebar@fedia.io · 2 pts · 1d
I think the best way for Sheeran to stay above the politics is to simply sit back, say nothing and let his opening acts say whatever they want to say.
Guitar@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1d
So if someone has a large platform, they shouldn't advocate for ending a genocide? Clearly you've never paid attention to music in your life. So much music is deeply political. Entire bands are strictly political. You sound like one of those MAGA supporters that's surprised when they find out RATM hates cops. Acting like musicians should stay out of politics is a fucking absurd take. Even this event of Macklemore being censored is a highly political moment. That being said, fuck Roger Waters for backing one genocide while decrying another. And fuck Ed Sheeran for having no spine.
SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca · -2 pts · 1d
So if someone has a large platform, they shouldn’t advocate for ending a genocide?
Donald Trump was someone people knew from entertainment. The entertainment TV show he was on made people think he was a good businessman or whatever. Do you think Trump successfully converting his notoriety in entertainment into political power was a good thing?
I remember Gina Corano making comments relating the treatment of conservatives to genocide. Do you think she was correct for making comments she felt was related to a genocide? She was fired for those comments, was that wrong?
Personally I just don't want to be thinking about the batshit things Gina Corano said when I'm trying to watch Star Wars. She has a right to say what she wants, but it negatively impacted her ability to entertain me.
Nah, pretty sure most music is about fucking. Either you haven't listened to a lot of music, or more likely, are being intellectually dishonest in an effort to impress your peers in your little hate group.
Speaking of MAGA, this is as ridiculous as boycotting Bud Lite for making a novelty can with a trans person on it one time. Same as them, you've been directed by social media to hate something for stupid reasons and so you have to fall in line because of social pressures. You're the exact same kind of person as the MAGA people, just the algorithms show you a different set of hate mongers that have different targets for you to hate.
Personally I don't care about what Roger Waters, Ed Sheeran, or Macklemore think about complex geopolitical issues. Political discussion shouldn't be dominated by non-serious people in the entertainment industry. Roger Waters and Donald Trump are in alignment on Russia, and I think they are both idiots. They're entertainment people, it's fine for them to be idiots... unless they start using their fame to push their ignorant takes on how the world is. Crossing that line from entertainment fame into politics creates a whole lot of problems.

CanIFishHere@lemmy.ca · -3 pts · 1d
I do believe the mistake is with the billionaire stadium owner. He had an opportunity to sit down with Macklemore and discuss the issue, but chose not to. That is something I think is lacking in todays world, and talking first will almost always lead to better outcomes.
Guitar@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1d
The guy is a personal friend of Bibi Netanyahu. He's not interested in talking, he's interested in covering up for Israel because he is a Zionist. He literally runs a surveilance center inside the Patriots stadium where they track "anti-semetic hate speech" online. Which includes things like "Free Palestine" and criticism of Zionism.
There's no discussion to be had. Nothing Macklemore said was hate speech, or should even be considered controversial. He advocated for people who need help. He even said none of it was an attack on Jewish people. Billionaire Zionists and their powerful friends realized it was effectively spreading a message they wanted to suppress, and now here we are.

Manjushri@piefed.social · 9 pts · 1d
Some truth to that perhaps, but Sheeran is worth some $400,000 million. He could easily told those stadiums that if they feel the need to cancel the shows over Macklemore's statements they could do so. They would have to refund all those tickets to people. Sheeran could then just change the tour to other, smaller venues. Or even arrange free concerts in the affected towns. Instead, he bowed to those billionaire stadium owners and tried to dance around saying it wasn't his fault. Bad choice and not one I'd have made if I had his resources.
CanIFishHere@lemmy.ca · -1 pts · 1d
As I said earlier, I believe the fault lies with the stadium owner when he chose to not have a discussion with Macklemore.
