There's a University of Cork study showing that putting the lid down aerosolises more material so spreads bacteria etc. over the whole room, whereas having the lid open produces a smaller number of larger droplets that nearly all just fall straight back into the toilet. The lid is not sealing the toilet and preventing the need to clean the bathroom.
I can't get the full text, but https://www.microbiologyresearch.org/content/journal/acmi/10.1099/acmi.fis2019.po0192 has the abstract. It looks like I misremembered its findings (or remembered an article that oversimplified them), though - having the lid down does something to the released particles to make more of them stay airborne for much longer, but it does reduce the number that escape, like you'd expect.
My comment was explicitly pointing out that closing the lid can have the opposite of the intuitive effect and make things worse even though you'd expect it to make them better. It seems that I misrepresented the study's findings, though, as while closing the lid does make particles remain airborne for much longer, so my overall point is sound, closing the lid does reduce the number of particles that initially become airborne.
That's not the conclusion the study's authors drew. The particles being airborne for longer means they can float further and contaminate things further away from the toilet, and also are more likely to end up inhaled. That could be a bigger problem than the number of particles initially released, so the study didn't make a recommendation of whether the lid should be up or down. More research is required before anyone should be issuing definitive commands in bold to strangers on the internet.
You or your classmates must have been quite bad at hiding them. I never noticed anyone having an erection in school and I never felt sexually attracted to anyone there either.
You step back real far and lean forward, stabilize with your hand on the tank. It might take a lil practice but it's light years better than trying to bend it down
Analyze the form factor of toilet. Is it one of those round ones that's sized for potty-training a child? Emergencies only. The bowl deep enough and water low enough? Push dick down with one hand, hope Poseidon doesn't kiss your willy. Stand up far to wipe, don't sit down too fast. Try not to piss under the seat.
Prefer to avoid public restrooms for shits, stand up to pee.
The seat is the problem not the water. You have to make a choice with some variety of toilets, touch the seat or get splashed. Obviously try to stay far enough away from both, but the point is, standing up is far easier than playing this game.
I'm not well endowed, at best I'm average... at best. But while I don't touch the water, I hit the front of the bowl. It's disgusting to feel the cold porcelain.
Even when sitting down we have to aim the nozzle manually, so it's just sitting down for a moment then getting up, which normally is more work than standing there for a moment.
And (at least for me), it is more comfortable peeing standing up (albeit that might be because of a lifetime of doing it like that).
Another compromise is to pee in the shower. or better yet, on there indoor plants, this way we don't need to water them.
Also, if it's not a weird toilet seat that doesn't have a lid, you should be putting it down to reduce the number of particles that get into the air...
Not only does closing the lid do just that, it works the exact way you’d think it would. The lid is not effective at preventing viral spread. Not the only cause for concern when it comes to things exiting the toilet bowl.
we just leave it down at home. we talked about it one day and everyone with male excretory parts just wants to get off their feet. only time the seat lifts is for cleaning.
I've thought of this so many times. I'm fact, I've thought about a spring-loaded seat hinge that raises the seat unless there's a person upon it. If the seat is always up, it is much less likely to be urinated upon. It takes the work completely out of the hands of the user.
The squat toilet is for pooping what the urinal is for wee. If you have really baggy trousers and are freeballing you don't even need to undo your belt.
This reminds me of the time I was a kid and a houseguest was using our toilet like this with the door opened and I barfed when I saw him doing a shit with his shoes on our toilet seat
But like, if men pee with the seat up, but both men and women poop with the seat down, then statistically the seat is already down more than half of the time. Now if we enforce a policy like this, that would mean more than half of the times someone walks in and needs the seat to be down is in luck, but the rest has to do double the "work". And if someone goes in after someone who would have otherwise left the seat up, they too do double the work, so the seat changes position 4 times instead of once. I think it's much more "just" to simply change the seat whenever you need it and sometimes you will even find it in the position you need it in.
I once jokingly mentioned to my wife that leaving the seat up is just as convenient for me as leaving it down is for her. To which she pointed out that, of the four different permutations of toilet use between us, 3/4 require the seat to be down, so all in all, it makes sense to leave the seat down.
And dammit, I had to marry a logical autistic, didn't I?
So now I always (try to remember to) leave the seat down.
I mean, it'll be less than 3/4 if you always stand to pee, because people pee more often than they poop (of they hydrate sufficiently and there's no health issue). But it'll still definitely be over half, so the result is the same.
I've been to men's restroom before. I wouldn't sit on that unless extremely necessary. Even then, I'd wipe that ship clean and cover it in toilet paper first
I do wonder if they all sat whether that'd solve it, though. That is, if it'd be cleaner. Or maybe they don't need to sit to keep it clean. Idk
I’ve worked maintenance for many years and I can assure there is no difference between men’s and women’s rest rooms other than there being urinals, they’re all disgusting, we’re all disgusting, all bathrooms are just wild animal shit houses.
From my experience, it depends on where. Malls and things like that where there are many people of all different demographics absolutely are equally disgusting. Semi-private washrooms tend to be less disgusting overall, but women's are usually at least a little cleaner. Standing to pee causes splashes. Enough human traffic and and the whole place smells like a hamster cage that doesn't go away unless the whole damn bathroom is flooded in sanitiser.
Women piss all over toilet seats and floors all the time, even in fancy places, don’t kid yourself. Any bathroom in any location is only as clean as the staff makes it, if left alone every public or semi-private bathroom would be covered in shit and piss within a day and there are no gender lines. I’ve worked at classy joints and dives and if not tended to by staff every toilet will be covered in piss and shit in ways that I personally cannot comprehend. Women’s only toilets get covered in just as much piss and shit as men’s toilets. Most people don’t ever see both restrooms and assume theirs is either cleaner or dirtier than the opposite gender, but as someone who deals with both on a general basis, animal shit houses the lot of them.
Hi. Been in, worked in both. My experience with bathrooms doesn't invalidate yours. Both can be true. Hell, we're probably not in the same country, so social norms can play a factor, and like I said before, demographics make a big difference in a lot of things. Which drug residues are left on the back of the toilet, for example.
I'm sorry you have such strong feelings about people and public bathrooms. It's definitely a shitty experience (pun intended). It's a weird hill to die on though.
Really? I'd expected cleaner. I mean, they sit. I don't know how women pee, honestly. Like, how the flow goes. But I can say from experience peeing into a toilet while standing up can be difficult. Pee, y u no single stream straight into toilet?
The only time I could ever get her to purr was when when I was sat on the toilet. So, of course, I began sitting down to pee in order to maximise her purring and fusses. And it kinda stuck.
I think just being an organism with an anus leads to higher levels of poop exposure than whatever minuscule amount of particulate matter that manages to aerosolize from an unlided flush
In my house, the toilet seat and lid are down when not in use. Because I have a cat and she's the kind of idiot that will jump into the toilet and then track toilet water into my bed.
not to well actually, but once you figure out a female urinal they are kinda nice. according to my mother who spent all last week texting me every time she used one on her hiking trip
The little sleeve thingy? My wife tried to use one but didn't try it at home first. There was no bathroom/pit toilet out there either. They tried but couldn't do it. It took me a bit to realize but once you make the connection that literally their entire life they have never had to pee standing up it makes sense that their body is just like nope can't do it. They ended up holding onto a tree and squatting while I kept watching for critters/moral support. It was dark out and spooky.
That night I think a raccoon sniffed around our tent which was cool.
My mom was So. Excited. I stopped peeing standing up when I was 25 because legs tired but like I get it when it's your first week doin it. We told her to aim for leaves and pay attention to which way the wind was blowing because upwind is a mistake you only make once.
She's back home from her backpacking trip, I don't think she's still using the urinal.
It's also easier to slam it down, than bend and lift it up.
And peeing is more frequent when there aren't urinals.
So everytime a pissstander arrives to a raised seat, it's a saving of efforts
But of course, this avoid the worst problem of all.
Having to remember to do one extra thing after you're done and ready to leave
That last one is probably THE biggest asshle of the entire discussion.
I never understood the whole "you left the toilet seat up" complaint. Never been an issue in my family but have heard "he never puts the seat down" all the time. Is it that much effort to put the toilet seat down when you need to go?
Edit: Always close the toilet seat cover, not just lowering the toilet seat. This is for both men and women.
Did you know this isn't a discussion at all in most of the world? People do whatever and no one is bothered by it. I only ever see this in American media.
If men have to put down women have to lift up. Morality is when the same logic is applied to the other side. Otherwise your being sexist and prejudice.
So why should women put the seat up if they cant know if youre gonna shit or piss. Why dont you try that thinking before speaking thing yourself for once?
You don't? That's a moronic take. We lift we drop we don't bitch about it. Only a petty fuck would make the seat being pre-prepared for thier specifications an issue. Still haven't used your brain eh.
I can make it even simpler for you, because you dont seem to get basic logic.
Case 1: Woman uses the bathroom -> the seat is down -> everyone can use it as is.
Case 2: Man pisses while standing -> the seat is up -> woman needs to lower it 100%, man only when sitting down next time.
Also thats not even the issue. A toilet seat if fucking filthy. Forcing someone else to touch it just because you are too lazy to lower it yourself after using it for yourself is as selfish as it gets.
I dont think this will get through to you but maybe you can stop and think about it for 10s. Why make life hard fpr other people for your own benefit? Maybe thats your egotistic worldview and you see yourself as an alpha or whatever bs, but if not your take doesnt make any sense.
Dum dum what do you think men do when we lift the toilet seat? Stop thinking about "ew I have to touch the toilet" and just stop policing ppl shitting. Fucking repedocan mindset rules for thee not for me. But you can't imagine a world where you have to do what others do.
Maybe you like touching toilet seats. Some people dont and I dont see why I should force them to.
Also do you even read what youre writing? "Have to do what others do" equals "have to do something an other person forces me to because of their fucking lazy ass" in your mind? How entitled can you get. Please stop spreading conservative bullshit your manly man grandpa taught you.
As a guy please leave it up, when I need to poop I really don't want to sit on a seat with pee splatter all over. If it's really unisex I think most women rather put it down than sit on a wet toiletseat.
I have a 5 year old kid that only wants to pee standing but (despite me telling him not to) he never lifts the seat. Unfortunately some guys never seem to grow beyond 5 years old...
Toilet seats are fully operational by anyone, (it's true I checked). How about instead of trying to police everyone you just put it up or down yourself and stfu?
Seeing this sign would ensure I go out of my way to leave it up.
Thats a spicy take. You know the seat being down is more than convenience, right? It's extremely unhygienic to flush an open toilet let alone the dangers of small children falling in. I recognize a public space is less likely to have a child small enough and unattended to worry significantly about.
We live in a society and all that. Personal responsibility only works if you err on the side of caution. If there is a default setting to a toilet seat and cover it would be down and closed. Otherwise, why put one on at all.
This assumes that men ever lift the seat. I’d prefer it be left up so that there is at least a chance I can sit on a dry, piss-free seat. Lowering a seat is preferable to the alternative.
The amazing thing about owning a penis is that I can still pee sitting down and there's never any drama. Have to poop? Don't even have to move! Have to fart? Go for it! Not farting in your underwear makes them smell fresher for longer, anyway.
One possible fix is adding a urinal target. I'm sure you could implement a similar concept in a regular toilet.
A urinal target, sometimes known by the specific types urinal fly or urinal bee, is an image or mark placed inside a urinal to encourage users to aim in a particular place so as to avoid messes and reduce cleaning costs.
Ok this is actually a great point, and I’d like to pose another question. If you’re gonna pee standing up with the lid open, what’s the optimal angle to minimize splatter? I would love to see an experiment or simulation to find the optimal angle.
Sure, because shit lining the underside doesn't come from people sitting down, and noone ever gets the seat sitting down. It is a toilet, there's a reason someone is supposed to clean them several times a day in a public setting.
I don't really understand what is the end goal here. It isn't minimising the amount of total work done, because for this optimal strategy would be just leaving the seat in whatever position it was used. Funnily enough, amount of times it needs to be put up is exactly the same it needs to be put down in absolute terms, but considering the "up" group is smaller than "down group", their perceived amount of times position should be changed is higher than the same for the opposite group.
I. e. in group of one "up" and 9 "downs", "ups" need to change position of lid with 90% probability, and for every "down" it's only 10%. Huh. Of course overall it equalizes: 1×0.9=9×0.1.
Or is it some kind of "welcomeness"? Like, leaving the lid in the most probable expected position (which for equal gender usage would be "sitting" because people sometimes poop, usually not while standing; and because penis people sometimes pee while sitting (me often, but usually at home, not in public)).
I don't know either. There really isn't a universally agreed upon standard for how to leave a toilet seat. Even with a sign dictating the expected behaviour, it's not a guarantee. It's completely illogical to expect a toilet seat to have been left in any specific state*, and therefore the onus is entirely on the next person to set it how they want before using it. This is already how it works. It takes 1 second. I don't know who is complaining about it.
Although, on second thought, the only people who would ever have to move the seat in a seat-down world are those who want to pee standing up, and there might be some value in very gently discouraging that behaviour in a public restroom. Not sure if that's the goal here, but it's a theory.
So, like, peeing into a toilet with the seat down, 100% keeps those tiny little splashes from hitting the tops my bare feet at home. So, when I pee in public toilets, I keep the seat down, to keep the urine off my shoes. I do wipe the seat if I miss, and I also spray if there is disinfectant. But I hear the smart girls squat atop the seat anyway.
Really, places where you don't have a urinal are sub optimal.
No idea. I suppose you could estimate with a water hose outlet of similar diameter, put a psi gauge on it, and adjust pressure until the stream travels an appropriate distance, but who cares.
Is peeing standing up something I'm just too intersex to understand? Like even before bottom surgery it was just more easy and convenient to sit down for it
I mean if you're at a urinal that's one thing but if you're going into a stall you're already wasting time might as well sit down and take a break, maybe take a smoke while you're at it
I wonder if signs like these are effective. Unless you are monitoring and handing out fines as guests leave, they are just gonna do whatever is their habit.
I'm the only one that uses my own toilet, this makes no difference when having to sit.
It would be super annoying to raise and lower the sit every single time that I piss...
As someone with common sense and a little bit of decency: complaining about being asked to leave the toilet seat down when it benefits everybody is ridiculous
Unless you like sitting on the ceramic with no seat, I guess.

Just the need of undoing your pants/belt already makes it easier to stand up.
And some seats have that front opening, which helps, otherwise there's often not much room to pee sitting down.
Then there's also some people who prefer to cover the seat with toilet paper before sitting down.

we just leave it down at home. we talked about it one day and everyone with male excretory parts just wants to get off their feet. only time the seat lifts is for cleaning.
Dozzi92@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 338d
I've thought of this so many times. I'm fact, I've thought about a spring-loaded seat hinge that raises the seat unless there's a person upon it. If the seat is always up, it is much less likely to be urinated upon. It takes the work completely out of the hands of the user.

halvar@lemy.lol · 34 pts · 338d
But like, if men pee with the seat up, but both men and women poop with the seat down, then statistically the seat is already down more than half of the time. Now if we enforce a policy like this, that would mean more than half of the times someone walks in and needs the seat to be down is in luck, but the rest has to do double the "work". And if someone goes in after someone who would have otherwise left the seat up, they too do double the work, so the seat changes position 4 times instead of once. I think it's much more "just" to simply change the seat whenever you need it and sometimes you will even find it in the position you need it in.

To which she pointed out that, of the four different permutations of toilet use between us, 3/4 require the seat to be down, so all in all, it makes sense to leave the seat down.
And dammit, I had to marry a logical autistic, didn't I?
So now I always (try to remember to) leave the seat down.

I’ve worked maintenance for many years and I can assure there is no difference between men’s and women’s rest rooms other than there being urinals, they’re all disgusting, we’re all disgusting, all bathrooms are just wild animal shit houses.
LycanGalen@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 337d
From my experience, it depends on where. Malls and things like that where there are many people of all different demographics absolutely are equally disgusting. Semi-private washrooms tend to be less disgusting overall, but women's are usually at least a little cleaner. Standing to pee causes splashes. Enough human traffic and and the whole place smells like a hamster cage that doesn't go away unless the whole damn bathroom is flooded in sanitiser.
NotASharkInAManSuit@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 337d
LycanGalen@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 336d

Or is it something else?

I've heard of someone who's mother died cuz they left the seat down and she just got stuck

Seriously? It’s sexism. Women shouldn’t be expected to touch filthy things.
Not my belief, but it’s the basis of the logic.

*Unless there's a lid. Close the damn lid!

What kind of PSI are you working with?
angband@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 337d
No idea. I suppose you could estimate with a water hose outlet of similar diameter, put a psi gauge on it, and adjust pressure until the stream travels an appropriate distance, but who cares.

Is peeing standing up something I'm just too intersex to understand? Like even before bottom surgery it was just more easy and convenient to sit down for it
samus12345@sh.itjust.works · 9 pts · 337d
How is having to pull your pants and underwear down and sit down easier and more convenient than just unzipping your fly and peeing standing up?
wetsoggybread@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 337d
I mean if you're at a urinal that's one thing but if you're going into a stall you're already wasting time might as well sit down and take a break, maybe take a smoke while you're at it
samus12345@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 337d
If you feel like sitting down, that makes sense, but it's not easier and more convenient.

I wonder if signs like these are effective. Unless you are monitoring and handing out fines as guests leave, they are just gonna do whatever is their habit.

If you have to sit and you have to go immediately you appreciate those that were considerate enough to engage in this simple act of decency.
interdimensionalmeme@lemmy.ml · 6 pts · 338d
I'm the only one that uses my own toilet, this makes no difference when having to sit.
It would be super annoying to raise and lower the sit every single time that I piss...

Lid up -> cats drink toilet water
Lid down -> no toilet-face cats
(Seat down because lid is down)

As someone with common sense and a little bit of decency: complaining about being asked to leave the toilet seat down when it benefits everybody is ridiculous
Unless you like sitting on the ceramic with no seat, I guess.
Yupa@ani.social · 5 pts · 337d
You like sitting on someone's urine?
Ironfacebuster@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 337d
Considering how it's after use, there would be no urine
You lift it up to use it and set it back down afterwards
Edit: to clarify, I am male and stand to pee. I lift the toilet seat and lower it when I'm done.
