The claim that people would like him if he was not a republican is one of the stupider pieces of cope they’ve come up with. They also like to use the stupid “TDS“ thing to claim that people just hate Trump arbitrarily, as if we can’t list 50 different horrible things he’s done and things about him that make him completely unfit for the office.

OwOarchist@pawb.social · 89 pts · 6d

The claim that people would like him if he was not a republican is one of the stupider pieces of cope they’ve come up with.

From their perspective, it makes sense. They hate Democrats because they're Democrats. And if one of them switches sides to become a Republican, they'll suddenly find excuses for them, forgive everything they've ever done, and support them no matter what.

They're so baked in tribalism that they can't understand disliking a politician for any other reason. So they think of course things would be reversed if he was part of the other tribe. They, of course, would instantly hate him if he became a Democrat.

Goodeye8@piefed.social · 46 pts · 6d

It's also a self-report that they like him only because he's a republican.

DarkFuture@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 6d (1 reply)

It's not just cope. It's that these people are so surrealistically stupid and lack all sense of curiosity that many legitimately don't know a fucking thing about the guy they voted to be the most powerful figure on the planet. So they think we must be acting unreasonable to hate him so much.

I mean a common phrase among them leading up to 2016 was "he'll run it like a business" because they were entirely unaware that the dipshit has driven every business venture he's ever attempted into the ground except for real estate because a monkey could be successful at real estate if it inherits a bunch of its daddy's money and real estate.

They don't even know who he is.

raspirate@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 6d

I've said for a long time that the primary means of American education is advertising. He was advertised as a competent businessman on TV, and so that's what a lot of Americans believe. The guy's a walking advertisement. A flim-flam man.

He wins because he's the best at lying in a country that prizes lying for money as the best skill set one can possess.

stickyprimer@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 6d (1 reply)

If anything, Biden Derangement Syndrome was absolutely a thing. MAGAts were so incredibly panicked about Biden when he was an entirely milquetoast, middle-of-the road Democrat. Do even they argue that Trump is just another Republican? I can’t see how anyone could.

zeppo@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 5d

They act that way any time a Democrat is president. They're terrified the Dem will do a good job and leave a good legacy and positive reputation, so they pretty much flip out. They did it over Clinton - spread and amplified all sorts of rumors then investigated him for years until they finally found something to impeach him for. And then, Obama, obviously. Trump himself is still freaking the fuck out about Obama and it's been a decade since he was in office.

nickiwest@lemmy.world · 32 pts · 6d (6 replies)

AdolfSchmitler@lemmy.world · 23 pts · 6d (1 reply)

This is the key point. It's why "every accusation is a confession" works so often. They are accusing others of the things they themselves are doing, because they assume everyone is doing it.

BeardededSquidward@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 11 pts · 6d

And they cannot get over the novel idea that people don't think that way and thus are lying or doing it better.

bitjunkie@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 6d (3 replies)

See also them using phrases like "believing in science". I don't have to believe in it, it's repeatable. Stop projecting your dumb worldview.

Dookieman12@piefed.social · 10 pts · 6d

Whenever someone brings up "believing in science" remind them that science isn’t a matter of belief, it's a matter of understanding. The world is the way it is whether you "believe" in it or not. The world is the way it is whether you understand it or not, and life is a lot easier when you understand the world around you.

nickiwest@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 6d

True.

Because they are willing to dig in their heels and reject evidence that doesn't fit their worldview, they assume that science-minded people are the same. They don't understand how "receive new data" and "refine or revise hypothesis" are important parts of the process. If they incorporated those steps, their belief system would implode.

oppy1984@lemdro.id · 1 pts · 6d

The Democratic Party has its Gavin Newsoms and Joe Manchins and Michael Bloombergs and Anthony Weiners aplenty.

No shortage of Democrats on the Lolita Express. No shortage of liberal billionaires hungry for another war in the Middle East, another trillion dollar data center spend on public land, or another Bay of Pigs on Cuba.

None of Trump's politics are unique to Trump. We've got shitty little fascists crawling all over the country, from the bluest cities of Washington and Minnesota to the reddest oil fields of Texas and Wyoming. If anything, the latest wave of Silicon Valley "Network State" fucks have been more concentrated in liberal districts. And their money has produced a wave of horrifyingly bad liberal politicians who are as much responsible for the Obama->Trump party slump as any QAnon club.

Political brain rot is believing people dislike Trump solely because he's a Republican.

That's the fundamental problem with American politics. Too many people treat it like team sports: I have to defend my side no matter what.

No, you don't.

You don't owe a political party your loyalty. Parties are tools, not identities. If your own side does something wrong, or even something you consider objectively immoral, you should be willing to say so. Blind partisanship isn't a virtue; it's the abandonment of independent judgment.

And saying he's "not as bad as Trump" is a ludicrous understatement.

the_crotch@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 5d

What's that based on?

He ordered almost 600 drone strikes in 7 different countries, hitting weddings schools and hospitals and killing scores of civilians. He renewed the patriot act, escalated the domestic spying program, maintained the CIA black site torture program, and persecuted the whistleblowers that told us about them. That's what "hope and change" looks like apparently. And the Dems went completely silent. "No blood for oil" turned into "awww he's charasmatic and plays basketball <3"

the_crotch@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 5d (10 replies)

the_crotch@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 4d (8 replies)

It's the same exact "it's ok when my guy does it" attitude that led to trump. This isn't a Republican problem. It's an American problem. We're not going to solve it by only focusing on half of the people doing it.

HogginAnDoggin@thelemmy.club · 0 pts · 3d (7 replies)

But yet here you are, what about Obama glazing. He's not president. He's not running again. Sure some people still glaze, most people don't give or shit or know alot of what he did. He only made it through the Republican primary because the Democrats helped him through it.

The punchline of the last decade has been how neoliberals and reactionaries within the liberal party laid the foundation for a Permanent Republican Majority. Even now, they're more interested in beating back an insurgent popular progressive movement than ousting fascists in their own backyards.

A different take: If he was a Democrat, would he have the same opinions? If he existed as current, he would not be a democrat, but maybe his experiences were caused him to develop in other directions.

If Trump espoused democratic values, and was for things like universal healthcare, higher wages, privacy and personal autonomy, hadn't been a sex pest, wasn't a grifter and on and on and on... then no, I might not despise him.

Not that Jason above was in any way being sincere in the question.

korazail@lemmy.myserv.one · 1 pts · 5d

No to throw around the 'in name only' epithet, but was he a democrat? or was that convenient label at the time? As a self-serving pig, he would chose the label that got him the most attention.

Disregarding the "left" vs "liberal" vs "democrat" disambiguation, since it doesn't really matter in US politics at this moment, I'd suggest, when discussing "leadership", that a Democratic person wants what is best for society as a whole while the current flavor of Republican wants what is best for the wealthy class.

I can't think of a Mr. Trump example where he advocated for the working class without it being a transparent grift.

My point, though, is not "do I hate trump?" but instead a thought experiment of "what if trump was actually a Democrat?" If he was a wealthy-ish person advocating for the lower classes to get aid, reduce wealth inequality, improve climate management and various other "democratic" values, then yes, I would support him.

Current trump can get fucked regardless of his label.

I will never understand why some people will go online with their real name and photo and discuss any highly controversial topics, much less politics.

Demdaru@lemmy.world · 18 pts · 6d (4 replies)
  1. It puts legitimacy behind their statements. You are no longer discussing with an internet no-name weirdo, the person you are writing with has a name and face.
  2. They weild authority in the field or bear respect assigned to them and are thus using it...or simply used to writing under their name due to that.
  3. They're one of "I have nothing to hide" folks. And I don't mean surveilence apologists - I mean folk who have such weirdly strong ego (without being egoists. At least most of the time) that their belief in who they are is unshakeable. They tend to rawdog the world.

Some combination of the three above is most common in my perspective.

Believe it or not, I always took it as the opposite. The first time Trump wanted to run he was laughed out of the primary. He had a long history as a narcissistic con man to anyone in the northeast and there’s no way he’d be elected. The entire point of “The Apprentice” was to rebuild his image.

Maybe some people took it as playing an exaggerated asshole clown of a boss, but he was toned down from reality. His narcissism was toned down, he acted mostly morally, less of an asshole, he appeared to know something about business. They even played down his need to plaster his name in gold everywhere. His entire image was much more palatable than the previous two decades of headlines

Unfortunately it succeeded

DarkFuture@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 6d

Above all else, Donald Trump is a useful idiot. More powerful people have been using him for a lot longer than he's been president.

He'll go along with whatever, as long as he gets attention/money. He's crass, so if he was a Democrat president, he'd still be an asshole, but he would have gone along with the liberal policies.

But it would never happen because Democrats are held to a higher standard and, as an idiot, the only way he can make himself stand out is through bigotry, which doesn't fly for liberal voters. DEFINITELY flies for conservatives though.

The people who put him in power are the problem. Without them he would just be another rich asshole saying bigoted shit on social media that we could just ignore. If they didn't put him in the White House, there's at least a chance that he'd be held accountable for his crimes.

His social media posts would be a case of "say whatever you want old man, you're just making yourself look foolish.". Instead he has a platform to make the entire country look foolish.

Of course we would. But also, this joke of a person would've never won as a Democrat. He chose Republicans because he knew he'd have a better shot with them.

ClownStatue@piefed.social · 7 pts · 6d (1 reply)

Does this count as a shitpost? I mean it’s about a piece of shit, but I’m not sure it’s the same thing.

SourDragon@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 6d

There is a pile of shit in the picture, so if you were to stretch the meaning of the term "shitpost" perhaps it could count? 🤔

AA5B@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 6d

If the democrats party worshipped a corrupt fascist narcissist, I would be out on the street with my hammer and sickle dancing around the maypole

HCSOThrowaway@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 6d (6 replies)

His logic is based in the notion that Party must be placed above Country or Principles.

... which is insane, and arguably exactly how the worst governments in history got so bad.

notabot@piefed.social · 3 pts · 6d (2 replies)

I would suggest that his logic is, in fact, based in the notion that his personal interest must be placed above Party, Country, and Principles.

HCSOThrowaway@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 6d (1 reply)

I don't know J @jasonllevin well enough to make that assessment.

notabot@piefed.social · 3 pts · 6d

Ah, I though you were talking about trump. The twitterer's position probably is as you suggested.

samus12345@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 6d (2 replies)

However combinations or associations of the above description may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely, in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion.

- George Washington, being absolutely correct about how political parties are a bad thing.

HCSOThrowaway@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 6d (1 reply)

Was that before or after he vaccinated his troops because vaccinations are good and help keep war-fighters in fighting shape?

samus12345@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 6d

It's from his farewell address, so after.

the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 5d

Such a stupid fucking question from a stupid fucking person.

BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 4 pts · 6d (1 reply)

What's with that photo of Trump? He looks like he's been on the fat drug for a year.

MiddleAgesModem@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 5d

Probably on the fat drug.

pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 6d

Why are you putting this in shitpost sub? Get outta here

toxicbubble@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 6d

watch 'When They See Us' on netflix, about the Central Park Five in the 1980s, says everything you need to know about DT

JigglySackles@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 5d

I can't wait till there is more realization that many of us don't care about party. Only results.

rumba@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 6d

I mean, it doesn't really represent the American public. It's in his job description, but he only represents the Oligarchs, the corporations, and the fascists.

If he abolished ICE, Stopped AI datacenter sprawl, installed universal health care, universal basic income, replaced the SCOTUS with true moderates, pushed environmental issues and cracked down on monopolies, I'd hear him out...

borQue@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 5d

I despise Trump in any form. Get rid ASAP of that Maroon Miscarriage

AuthenticSchedule@lemmus.org · 3 pts · 6d (6 replies)

I still hate him, and I'm a republican

bunnybunny@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 6d (5 replies)

But did you vote D or R the last election?

AuthenticSchedule@lemmus.org · 2 pts · 6d (4 replies)

I didn't vote.

BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 6d (1 reply)

You going to vote for AOC in 2028?

AuthenticSchedule@lemmus.org · 0 pts · 5d

No, I just can't vote, lol

bunnybunny@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 5d (1 reply)

Why not? If you really hate some one and don’t want to see someone become president to scam the whole country, I would rather vote for the other party. Even if I don’t agree with everything that party stands for. Trump and the Republicans right now stand for fraude, war, racism, violence and hate. It makes your country look fucking stupid. Personally I would do anything to avoid that.

That’s just something I don’t get about Americans. A lot of you are so fanatical that you would rather die than vote for the other party even if that means ruining your country to the ground.

AuthenticSchedule@lemmus.org · 1 pts · 3d

We did that with JFK, but that's only because everyone liked him. Also, he would be a republican now if it was today.

And I genuinely don't know how tf we let Trump as president cuz he is literally in the files.

Tiral@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 6d

This last election I voted Dem. Not because I thought she was worth a shit, but she was imo the better of the two options. Political party doesn't mean shit to me.

Sam_Bass@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 6d

i personally hate who he represents as well

Naaah I see the dems post wholesome chungus pictures of Obama, Bush and Clinton fishing. Harris was "proud" of Liz Cheney's endorsement. I've heard what they say but more importantly I've seen what they do.

Did you know! Around 80% of the wildlife is endemic to Australia, meaning it can only be found here! According to the Australian Wildlife Conservancy, 87% of mammals, 93% of reptiles, 94% of frogs, and 45% of birds in Australia ONLY exist in Australia.

From iconic kangaroos and koalas, to elusive echidnas and wombats, you can see some of the world's most unique wildlife Down Under. Australia is also home to the only mammals that lay eggs: the platypus and the echidna.

That's all very interesting, but seems like you may have Australia Derangement Syndrome.
