Sure, abuse like that should be illegal (it often already is, although enforcement is usually terrible) and there needs to be support for people to get out of bad situations. But you'd never see those cases because they're not visibly other from you in the same way.
The ones forced into it, I pity. In my area, it's fairly common to see a women (and girls) out in the park in full religious garb, while their husband is in sweatpants and flip-flops. It definitely makes me angry. I honestly don't think anyone chooses to dress like this unless they are forced to by a man.
In general I think we need to look to what feminists from similar cultural backgrounds to this say we should do and amplify their voices. Sounds like a you problem. I dont live in a place where they run 24/7 but they run long enough at night on holidays. Also, if you are partying until 2am don't be a weak sauce, party until 6 and then next day transit starts.
I have a somewhat vivid memory of sprinting through NY Penn Station around midnight to get the last train home, back before I lived in the city. Was a deciding factor in me moving. Had to leave my friend's Halloween party at like 10 to get the last train.
Yeah, the issue there is that public transport wasn't extended for Halloween. Here on holidays public transport either has an extended timetable or we get a separate night bus routes that start at the city centre (around 200k "city") and send you to anywhere in the city. Those run until 6am when normal bus service starts so you get 24h service. For people from nearby towns they have their own bus/train service which in holidays runs 24h too.
I understand being fucked in a random weekend, but on holidays? That's fucked up man.
Edit: just to be clear here anything over 30m is kinda fucked too, but that's like a different province already so people from that far tend to have a plan. In any case if you were on a big city like Barcelona or Madrid where 30m you are still in the city, this wouldn't be an issue ofc.

Here you have a load of people who either have finished work or have the weekend off and they're looking for shit to do that isn't staring at the TV drinking tinnies they bought on the way home from work and they wanna go out to bars with their friends, or to a restaurant, or a show. Those bars, clubs, restaurants, theaters and take outs make money and pay tax which the city can use for shit they need. Oh, and those Pubs? They can act as community nexuses, so there's a fucking social benefit too. The idea of a city having no nightlife is genuinely a dumber idea than when they turned cities into car centric hellholes, and that was a very dumb idea that most cities are struggling to deal with even now.
Want to know how universal nightlife is? Cultures that don't drink have nightlife. Muslim countries have night markets and cafes because it's almost a universal thing that after work, at night, people wanna hang out and do things. Even before civilization we used to gather round fires to listen to stories and shit, that's how universal it is.
I have been to villages with nightlife, several pubs where locals and visitors alike go to have a drink or maybe see live music. I have been to hamlets with a pub open until 11 where people go to vibe with a pint. Hell, even dormtowns I have been to have at least one watering hole. If your authorities are fighting against nightlife, then they are ultra-authoritarian asshats who hate money and human joy.

Where I come from we invested in public transport, and when I say we invest in public transport, I mean we invest in public transport. Everyone takes the bus here, regardless of who they are, because It's the easiest way to get into town and back because the alternative is unviable and inconvenient, especially if you are going out on the pish. We have rich office workers on the bus alongside poor gig workers. And the nightbuses are used by both pishheads and night workers to get home or to work or wherever, and it's not too bad, not anymore annoying than pishheads at the bars at least.
America doesn't invest in public transport because they want to force you to drive, they don't want to give you the choice, they keep public transport either non-existent or useless, so you don't have a choice but to drop thousands of dollars every year just to leave your house. This has resulted in a situation where most American cities look like Glorified motorway junctions dotted with unwalkable housing estates and strip malls. No, that is not because the city was founded in 1950 when people started buying cars, most American cities were founded much older than that and had public transport systems, but got rid of them to force people to drive, literally demolishing the entire city to turn it into a collection of strip malls and steroids.
You want a healthy nightlife, invest in public transport and nightbuses. Don't want to invest in that, have fun with drunk drivers, expensive taxis, no nightlife, and drinking alone in your house because you can't fucking leave your house without a car.

Fuck Uber. I don't even use their, or any other app, for food delivery any more. Slow, unreliable and expensive. It's been fully enshittified for years.
Once had some drunk guys shove a girl in my cab and give me enough cash to get her home. She puked in the back seat. And I had to get her dad to get her out of the cab and her tiny little brother was upset. You get this kinda service from an uber?
My husband and I used Uber for one of the first times to get back home after a long walk, where we were both inebriated. It was pretty clear and we weren't trying to hide it, but we weren't rude, and I was careful not to slam the door or anything. The driver gave us a 1-star rating and it took a long time before I found a few drivers willing to chance it on me in the meantime. I don't remember that driver but I hope I've cut them off in traffic since. You know what, I probably have.
Drivers are currently making like $12-$14/hr, so...yup. Delivery drivers are the number one recipients of government food benefits in the U.S. right now. And Uber will just deny my cleaning fee when someone vomits, soooo...yup. Not accepting that shit in my car and paying out of pocket to clean it after midnight (tons of detailing options open then), having to drag an unconscious stranger out of my car, etc.
I really think this is it. Calling for a cab was an effort. pushing a button in an app that says, "I need a cab here" was the secret sauce Uber provided. That's old news now. They also had a benefit of pricing while they had VC, but that's evaporating.
For the record, I don't uber or equivalent. I either am or find a DD or "rideshare" with friends and family.
I haven't used them, but there are taxi apps that seem to hook into the less-predatory transport businesses. Pricing may not be as competitive, but that comes with the drivers earning a stable wage.

I drove back in 2017-2018, and at that time Uber was starting to get difficult about reimbursing cleaning fees when some drunk puked in the car, which made fewer drivers want to pick up drunks. I can't imagine the situation has improved since then.
You get charged a cleaning fee if you puke in someones car.. but uber wont give the cleaning fee to the driver, you know..the person who has to have their car cleaned?
I unfortunately drove Uber for a bit back in the late 2010s until I got tired of being sexually harassed. Drivers do get paid the cleaning fee, but the rideshare services were becoming increasingly stringent about their requirements for paying it. The issue was threefold.
People would soil vehicles then dispute the cleaning charges with their credit card, so Uber would be out whatever was paid to the driver. Last I knew, this was a maximum of $225, but capped at $80 if the driver did the cleaning. Good luck finding a professional cleaner that charges less than $225 for cleaning seats smeared with vomit or feces.
Next, drivers would fake vomit or feces and file a report, causing their prior passengers to be charged a cleaning fee.
Ultimately, the ride share services tightened up their methods for both charging and refunding these fees to the detriment of both drivers and riders because they're soulless, capitalist pig fuckers that only care about profit.
by this point most people in america probably don't remember taxi cabs. they would often be dirty and driven by a disheveled wildman. these drivers answered to no one other than their dispatcher who gave just as little of a fuck.

Uber, lyft, etc also do a lot of hospital-to-home transport for otherwise ambulatory / self care patients. Wondering if theyre gonna stop picking up my Psych patients too.
Thats a lie if they know you are drunk they will hit you with surge pricing. They are doing something similar with phone battery, if the battery is low they hit you with surge pricing!
Uber drivers can give you a rating as a passenger. At one point in my life, my score wasn’t great because I’d get plastered and be obnoxious in the car on the ride to my hotel or home.

This is the most American takeaway I have heard. It's not my fault your country doesn't invest in public transport, resulting in dead cities with no third places, endless traffic, no walkability and it seems, from you, rampant snobbish classism.
Also you going home from a bar, a place that is famously full of drunk people, complaining about drunk people on the bus while you're coming home from the place where all those drunk people are coming from is a bit like complaining about fursuiters on the bus while you're coming home from a fursuit convention.
Also drunk people on the bus is 100% better than the alternatives, that is drunk people driving or zero bars in your city because their customers can't come home after drinking without dropping a stack just to get home.
Where I come from we invested in public transport, and when I say we invest in public transport, I mean we invest in public transport. Everyone takes the bus here, regardless of who they are, because It's the easiest way to get into town and back because the alternative is unviable and inconvenient, especially if you are going out on the pish. We have rich office workers on the bus alongside poor gig workers. And the nightbuses are used by both pishheads and night workers to get home or to work or wherever, and it's not too bad, not anymore annoying than pishheads at the bars at least.
America doesn't invest in public transport because they want to force you to drive, they don't want to give you the choice, they keep public transport either non-existent or useless, so you don't have a choice but to drop thousands of dollars every year just to leave your house. This has resulted in a situation where most American cities look like Glorified motorway junctions dotted with unwalkable housing estates and strip malls. No, that is not because the city was founded in 1950 when people started buying cars, most American cities were founded much older than that and had public transport systems, but got rid of them to force people to drive, literally demolishing the entire city to turn it into a collection of strip malls and steroids.
You want a healthy nightlife, invest in public transport and nightbuses. Don't want to invest in that, have fun with drunk drivers, expensive taxis, no nightlife, and drinking alone in your house because you can't fucking leave your house without a car.

It's a good comment, even though I'm not American and I wasn't returning home from the pub. :) . But sure, if public transport was actually good, it would be nice to use it. Currently it sucks extreamly much and is pretty much like transporting cattle from A to B to as low cost as possible.
If it was high quality, nice chairs, low noise... Modern buses... Then it would be amazing. But it's not like that in most cities. It's usually loud, packed, full of people who don't care about being quiet or how they smell like.
The idea is good, the execution is definently "low cost transport" in an even worse way then budget airlines.

It’s dries out plastic and cause metal to rust. All the suggestions I’ve seen for generators is remove a bunch of crap before even thinking of using them.

My husband and I used Uber for one of the first times to get back home after a long walk, where we were both inebriated. It was pretty clear and we weren't trying to hide it, but we weren't rude, and I was careful not to slam the door or anything. The driver gave us a 1-star rating and it took a long time before I found a few drivers willing to chance it on me in the meantime. I don't remember that driver but I hope I've cut them off in traffic since. You know what, I probably have.

Drivers are currently making like $12-$14/hr, so...yup. Delivery drivers are the number one recipients of government food benefits in the U.S. right now. And Uber will just deny my cleaning fee when someone vomits, soooo...yup. Not accepting that shit in my car and paying out of pocket to clean it after midnight (tons of detailing options open then), having to drag an unconscious stranger out of my car, etc.

I really think this is it. Calling for a cab was an effort. pushing a button in an app that says, "I need a cab here" was the secret sauce Uber provided. That's old news now. They also had a benefit of pricing while they had VC, but that's evaporating.
For the record, I don't uber or equivalent. I either am or find a DD or "rideshare" with friends and family.
I haven't used them, but there are taxi apps that seem to hook into the less-predatory transport businesses. Pricing may not be as competitive, but that comes with the drivers earning a stable wage.

Is there an actual source for this? I tried searching news for “Uber will know you’re drunk” and found nothing, I reverse look-upped the meme and saw it nowhere, there is no indication of a source in the meme.
I want to know how they will know that you’re drunk, and I want to know why they want to cut off what I assume is a decent chunk of their clientele, but I’m not seeing anything.

I would have thought that was always the case, but maybe not.
So it reads to me that it's not that Uber will be like, "he's legally drunk, he can't use our service", it's, "I went to pick this guy up and he was vomiting and his pants were falling down so I decided to turn him down"
It should be noted I did not actually click these links and read the articles or anything, that's just how it appeared. So, take it with a grain of salt. I might have read the articles except I don't drink so I don't really care

Recovering Uber driver here.
I drove back in 2017-2018, and at that time Uber was starting to get difficult about reimbursing cleaning fees when some drunk puked in the car, which made fewer drivers want to pick up drunks. I can't imagine the situation has improved since then.

I unfortunately drove Uber for a bit back in the late 2010s until I got tired of being sexually harassed. Drivers do get paid the cleaning fee, but the rideshare services were becoming increasingly stringent about their requirements for paying it. The issue was threefold.
People would soil vehicles then dispute the cleaning charges with their credit card, so Uber would be out whatever was paid to the driver. Last I knew, this was a maximum of $225, but capped at $80 if the driver did the cleaning. Good luck finding a professional cleaner that charges less than $225 for cleaning seats smeared with vomit or feces.
Next, drivers would fake vomit or feces and file a report, causing their prior passengers to be charged a cleaning fee.
Ultimately, the ride share services tightened up their methods for both charging and refunding these fees to the detriment of both drivers and riders because they're soulless, capitalist pig fuckers that only care about profit.

by this point most people in america probably don't remember taxi cabs. they would often be dirty and driven by a disheveled wildman. these drivers answered to no one other than their dispatcher who gave just as little of a fuck.
do you have a problem with the driver? did he smell bad, did he talk too much, did he blast a master P song at full volume for the entire ride despite your objections?
tough shit.
uber was built in response to this. it was not only based on these occasional bad experiences, but to ensure that every working class person was on their best behavior when in the presence of their betters. it was never about a service or bettering anything, other than sparing the better-off from mild inconvenience.

Uber drivers can give you a rating as a passenger. At one point in my life, my score wasn’t great because I’d get plastered and be obnoxious in the car on the ride to my hotel or home.
