Edit: Full disclosure, our kids bring their lunch every day, on Fridays they can get an extra treat like cookies or something from there though). My wife makes bread fresh, we get our produce from the local farms too as well as growing a few things ourselves, etc.
The company that ran my alma mater's cafeteria also served kitchens. The food plan my college had selected was the one below what they serve in prison...
An army recruiter came to my extremely poor elementary school, and could basically say anything to us kids. Told us that if we joined the army you can get whatever food you want, at all, from the mess hall and a chef will cook it for you. And yes, being able to get food was a motivating factor for some of us.
I asked if you could get eggs Benedict every day if you asked for it. He looked a little nonplused, then said "oh yeah sure! Every day!"
I knew at that point he was full of it and told him so.
The rich school near me had the same thing. Navy medic came in to describe how amazing the navy treats you. Definitely not a recruiter, though. Made very clear up front that he wasn't there recruiting. Wink wink, nudge nudge.

Army recruiter in elementary school? Wtf? Just when you think lemmy already showed you what it's like over there.. From "it sucks" to starship troopers's shit level.
As a former enlisted who thankfully got medical'd out of the service very early, the ONLY thing I find mildly infuriating 8s that it looks like my old school lunches.
Why do they deserve to get better food than our children?
Anyone still in can kiss my ass. Most enlisted joined within the last 10 years where it's been a ShitShow since Trump1.0. I joined when I thought Obama was going to be different, but am glad I got out not long after it became clear how much he loves drone strikes. I would have just gone awol when trump showed up.
Modern military deserves the food we give to homeless people. Once we improve the lives of those who have it worst, we can think about getting them better food.
Yes. You end up with a military dictatorship or rarely something better. Given the amount of military folk who love the idea behind Starship Troopers, i wouldn't bet on the latter.
For many, joining the US military is the only way out of poverty, a path to citizenship, or a way to a higher education. Some others just are victims of propaganda, or just genuinely sadistic, but unfortunately most of the people joining the military are victims of a failed education and social security system designed to bring more troops into the meat grinder.
EDIT: Holy moly. I do not condone US imperialism at all. I am not saying that people who fall into the poverty draft get a free pass either. What I AM saying is that the US war machine is a fucked system that results in endless atrocities abroad but unfortunately will only to continue unless we dismantle the institutions that blindly draw people to the machine so that these people who would otherwise be vulnerable can wake the fuck up and turn away from it. These systems include capitalism, propaganda, imperialism, jingoism, a failed education system, etc.. Chill out friends.
Surviving is when you go work for or McDonalds or Uber not kill brown children. Such a pathetic excuse for mass murder. As if these people had no other option. In reality becoming a mercenary mass-murderer is just a bit more lucrative than flipping burgers.
What are you talking about the average US militant isn't poor at all and even the poor ones could easily work somewhere else. You're just doing mental gymnastics to excuse doing child murder for money
No, I'm pointing out the hypocrisy in you pretending to know what it is to be desperate, that you can judge others in such a position.
I ain't justifying diddly squat.
Edit: For clarification, watching the fall of the American empire in real time is both amusing and enlightening. Hopefully, it happens fast enough that I get to see the end result.
If you can join the most expensive military in the world, you are not nearly as desperate as, for example, people who survive in NATO without that.
Also nowhere near as desperate as the people whose countries NATO keeps invading.
let me ask you question: what's worse from a moral standpoint: stealing an old ladies purse or killing someone? what about pitching a tent on land that someone else owns? what about parking your RV in a wal-mart parking lot overnight?
some of those things are crimes and you'll be looked down upon even if you don't get caught.
so, why do we say 'thank for your service' and then turn around and see the thief as less than human?
i'd rather have someone poach on my land than bust into my house and shoot me in the face. i'd think anyone would feel that way.
I don't thank people for their service. I understand that some people needed to to survive. You're legally allowed to park in wall mart overnight with an RV at a majority of locations as well.
You either agree that the people your empire has been invading have a right to defend themselves by eliminating your ss troops, or you think that your ss troops deserve to survive and get higher education.
Which is it?
would you say the same for ICE? they also recruit from poor migrant communities because they're most desperate and the pay and perks are good - would you say they're justified in joining and terrorising the ones that didn't?
and while I 100% agree that propaganda and the system failing them is the main reason driving that - we don't counter the propaganda by normalising the poor-to-terrorist pipeline as "well the system sucks but you gotta do what you gotta do" - there are red lines and if we could collectively resist them - we starve the system from being able to force people into the meat grinder
Would it be okay, then, for me to rob, torture, and kill your family if it was the only way for me to get higher education (i.e. something that is not necessary to live)?
What about the families these monsters kill that won't be able to receive higher education on account of being dead or kidnapped?
And what about roles outside of the military? When was the last time you contributed to slavery or child exploitation with your purchases? How about your employer?
Just wanted to make sure since people in this thread seem to be taking a holier-than-thou stance. As above:
Would it be okay, then, for me to rob, torture, and kill your family if it was the only way for me to get higher education (i.e. something that is not necessary to live)? What about the families these monsters kill that won't be able to receive higher education on account of being dead or kidnapped?
If we're talking about more than just service members who directly engage in combat and are including non-combat roles (cook, mail clerk), then the answer has to be yes.
Why "strawman"? They are literally saying that that is perfectly okay to do for USians against people elsewhere. Why can't you also say how it would be so good if you were on the receiving end of this poverty-alleviating programme?
Also, again, what about the poverty and education of the families these soldiers kidnap, torture, and kill?
You think I care that the only way for them to go to college is to go and murder people in the country I'm from. Fuck them and fuck anyone who makes excuses for the American empire.
No, it does not. Grew up watching the non-english news, every year you would see reports of people that joined the military with that promise from recruiters and were deported at the end of their service.
I'm making a reference to Starship Troopers, specifically the movie, which was a satire on fascism. "Service guarantees citizenship" was a propaganda line by the fascist government in the movie.
Reminds me of frozen gyro I've purchased. Honestly spiced well and tastes good but usually you fry it up to be a bit browned on each side, and then you put a few slices in a pita with tzatziki and onion, cucumber, and tomato.
On its own it's also fine, but basically just a meat / protein at that point.
My dad was on an aircraft carrier when he served. One of his favorite stories to tell was when his ship was riding out a hurricane and fishing trawlers couldn't get into port to unload their catch. The trawlers sold the ship for next to nothing tons of the biggest shrimp they had ever seen. It took 3-4 bites to eat each shrimp. The sailors stuffed themselves on shrimp for the next week.
This was 35+ years ago, those soldiers are most likely already retired or dead.
I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm asking for info and no one will provide anything except "they deserve shit" lol. Wtf if this thread, feels like trumpers defending orange Mussolini.
Haha that's crazy dude. Is the US military like, doing anything extremely similar to attacking Iraq right now? Surely they wouldn't be doing this kind of stuff 35 years later haha stupid Trumpers
What info do you need? Sources for the fact that the USian military participated in the invasions of Iran, Yemen, Syria, Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.?
I will guarantee that you would not volunteer to go to jail and be sentenced to hard labor for your view on this. Lotta keyboard warriors that will defend a lot of people doing things to feed their family and escape poverty unless they are the US military specifically.
No, I fucking would. I have a spine that prevents me from voluntarily going to mass murder innocent Arabs.
Lotta keyboard warriors that will defend a lot of people doing things to feed their family and escape poverty unless they are the US military specifically.
Yes, how dare I condemn people taking money from the imperial core to murder Afgani, Iraqi, and now Iranian kids. THESE AMERICAN SOLDIERS ARE JUST TRYING TO FEED THEIR FAMILYY
Cool, you can also go head and do something to stand up for your ideals that results in jail time. If what you are actually going to do is bitch behind a keyboard and pay your taxes, you are doing the same thing most people in the military do. At any given time 99% of the military is also bitching and doing nothing.
Oh I’m not in anymore, fuck Trump and injuries got me retired. Yeah, this country does suck. I’m going to put the blame on the people that control both the military and the size of the population in poverty though.
lol demonizing Russian conscripts that they had to start putting trigger guards on so they couldn’t kickstart their rifle through their skull. Good example. The poor are the pawns of the oligarchs and the despots. You and I are lucky enough to fuck around and have this chat.
The fucking nerve of you calling people who wouldn't sign up to murder children on the other side of the planet for a paycheck cowards is fucking disgusting.
You should really be ashamed of yourself and your country.
Go ahead and show anything that says people who join the US military are well off. I believe the US is and has been involved in conflicts they should not have been since WWII where casualties should be expected but were unnecessary to even be there in the first place. I understand why what the US calls terrorist organizations exist and why US actions are a self-fulfilling cycle of creating more destruction and more adversaries. I support other nations in their right to defend themselves from said unnecessary action and blame the people that actually send people off to die for nothing.
I mean, when you literally sign up to be cannon fodder, I don't know what you expect. America has always treated troops and veterans like livestock. You could simply choose a career other than oppressing the third world for oil profits.
Lots of people arguing about this in the comments, but I'm glad there's so many people defending the position that it's ok to do bad things if you're poor, because that's exactly my position. I wasn't in the military, though, no.
I was the guy that trafficked kids to Epstein's Island.
I don't talk about it a lot because most of the time people judge me pretty harshly for it. You wouldn't believe how many dates have walked out on me the moment I drop what I used to do for a living. I mean, look, I'm not a pedophile myself. Most of the guys I was working for were just desperate and in it for the money. I don't support what the guys in Washington decided to pay me for. Blame them, not me.
What was I supposed to do, work in a warehouse or a grocery store or something? What am I, some kind of chump? Fuck that. With the money I made duct taping children's mouths shut and throwing them into my trunk, I managed to earn enough money to put myself through college, and finally persue my real passion.
That's right. Now I'm finally able to persue a dual major in Moral Philosophy and Women's Studies. Also, funny coincidence, I'm a TA and I'm actually teaching one of the girls I met in my previous line of work about feminism. What a funny little coincidence!
You can order fries with gravy and cheese at most diners in America (even if you have to go off-menu, anywhere that has both fries and biscuits ‘n’ gravy could do it). Sometimes known as disco fries
Not exactly poutine, but close enough when no fresh curds are available.
That sounds like the sort of food I'd make while black out drunk. Or is some North American thing where the words cottage cheese and gravy mean something different.
Poutine is indeed comfort food that is most tasty when you are shitfaced (or hangover). However a poutine will never contain cottage cheese. The original ingredients are fries/chips, poutine gravy, and cheddar curds. I repeat, cheddar curds. They have to be fresh and make a skweek skweek sound when you bite them, and be a bit melted by the hot gravy. Pieces of mild cheddar are also acceptable if no curds are available.
Meanwhile in the Finnish army we conscripts got pancakes, fish, meatballs, burgers, all kinds of decent food, and you were allowed to portion yourself so you could get quite full. It was on par if not slightly better than regular old school food.
Please note, these meals are recreations, and recreations only, based on the portions described by the food companies and corrections officials accused of skimping.
And this is what they proudly claim to be serving, the actual portions are smaller and the food is worse. This is the equivalent of the photos mcdonalds takes for their menu.
Lol no one wants to hear from you or know you and your life is completely worthless. You have no friends which is the reason you have the time to go troll lemmy, you nowit sack of shit.
You don’t think some members may have joined before this administration and got trapped doing this kind of shit?
What, when we were occupying Afghanistan for 20 years and slaughtering hundreds of thousands of civilians? What on earth makes you think I only hate them because of who the president is?
Its not like you can just quit, you usually do jail time.
Tough shit. A person threatening you with jail time does not justify committing murder.
And if they have a family, are they supposed to just abandon them?
Even if they have to, they'd be no worse off than the families of the people they kill. Although, I suppose they often kill the families too, so kind of a bad example.
Help me understand why it’s their fault they were told to do stupid shit with very little recourse.
This may be a difficult concept to grasp, but human beings have agency which means that if someone tells you to do something, you don't actually have to do it, because you are not a robot.
I'd you're not going to link any info at all, why do you keep replying? I'm literally asking and everyone just downvotes me like I kicked their dog rather than proving any source.
US soldiers deserve worse than shit food. Because they’re rapists and murderers. That’s why. They should just be redacted before they rape and kill more innocent people and kids. Same with IDF.
The US military has been like this for decades though. You could argue ignorance, but at some point you have to take some personal responsibility for your actions.
The last time the US military did anything not evil was WWII and that was not really by choice. It's their fault they were told to do stupid shit because they have at least three generations of murder as examples they could have looked at.
US straight up turned away diaspora Jews who fled Hitler. Soviets let them in, even tired to warn western countries like UK and so on but The West was ready to let Hitler destroy and conquer Europe so they could be turned on the Communists. The USSR foiled that plan.
No. I never heard this apologia when talking about russian soldiers. I am pretty sure the consequence for refusing to serve is a lot higher than in the USA
They're bombing my home country. People don't generally root for the people who are murdering little girls where they come from. There are 5000 less Iranians in the world because of them.
In the royal Australian Navy, we got fed ridiculous amounts of potatoes au gratin, sans the gratin. It was like big trays of thin -ish sliced potatoes, drowned in white sauce, and walked past a tepid oven. The potato was still mostly raw. Thankfully nobody seemed to like the broccoli but me (because it was unsalted), so I'd get a mountain of broccoli and jazz it up with salt, pepper, and butter pads.
I think we got some kind of meat but for the life of me I can't remember any specific meat dish except an inedible beef stroganoff with a thin gravy made from what tasted like all the burnt bits scraped off all the other pans, blended in some dishwater. That thing would ruin your day.
The hardest part was only having about 30 minutes to eat, and that included standing in line, which meant you were calorie constrained by how much you could stuff in your mouth in the 10 minutes of sitting time.
Good fuck em. Why would you ever join the military? I don't care if you're stupid and poor, I'm stupid and poor, I'd never join that dumb shithead factory
And before you say free ride through college, let me head that off - it's not free if it comes at the cost of human life being churned through the endless war machine.
This is the exact same stuff they fed us when I was in Iraq 20 year ago. They gave the contract to the lowest bidder who bought the cheapest food possible then pocketed the "leftover" cash. This isn't new. The difference between then and now is our families could send us care packages and we didn't have cell phones to post about the mystery meat. I don't want anyone to eat like this but I also don't know why everyone is surprised by wartime food. Food SUCKS when you deploy, it's why they give troops the big send off steak and lobster dinner. Best way to avoid giving our troops trash food is to NOT DEPLOY THEM.
The US military industrial complex is a prison. People sign up for it for social service benefits that first world countries get given to them as a human right.
I was gonna say, if your other options are poverty / prison, this isn't actually a bad deal practically speaking. Not gonna get into the ethics of military service other than to say blaming individuals for trying to escape poverty isn't the answer. When I teach about chronic institutionalization in a psychiatric context, the military is one of the susceptible demographics alongside prison and long term hospitalization.
Apart from being rather sparse helpings, are you sure there are actually cooks on the galley? Because any halfway decent cook can still produce decent meals even from substandard produce.
No. There are culinary specialists that think instead of going down to storerooms to get another thing of tomato sauce for spaghetti, they can just cut what is left with ketchup as it needs replenishing. They are buddy fuckers and some of the laziest, most corrupt(?)(eg, you had to know someone, or be a woman, to get good food that wasn’t on the serving line) people I met in the service.
It's really disgusting to think that politicians eat pretty well and the army who dies for them are eating this stuff while they are killing minors in the middle east
Not pictured, food served to members of the US Air Force. Airmen actually get paid a bonus stipend for food when visiting other non-air force bases for a reason.
Silver slab reminds me of the meat slices that Aldi sells in their frozen gyro kits, probably the same thing, a slice of homogenized mystery meat. Not sure about the blob
Looks like some carrots, a hamburg steak (ground beef patty) and a piece of roast beef, like what Arby's and similar fast food places serves, where the beef just comes in a plastic bag with basting juices and you basically just steam/wet bake it. Not a whole lot of opportunity for maillard browning to happen in a wet cooking environment like that, and when you cook beef hard for a long period of time (a good way to make sure it's safe to eat), it ends up grey in color.
These are mostly on ship. They're at that stage relying on whatever is left in the large fridges, having to ration their stock. Which can only mean they're not being resupplied at sea, especially at such a prolonged operation -- short of calling it a war -- that the shit leadership bragged they'll finish Iran in a week.
Asked my nephew who joined the Marines about this. He said this is a "hot tray". Basically just leftovers for the people that couldn't make it to meal time for various reasons (his example was 2 people who had to guard their gear while everyone else eats) so they make a tray of whatever is available for them when they're allowed to go eat.
I think maybe a little misleading, but probably not fake. For the boxed meal, that shit happened all the time. It's just like going through the drive through.
For meals served on ships, most of the time you ask for what you want, they don't just give you what they have. If you have a piece of bread on your tray, that's because you only grabbed a piece of bread. Most of the time.
Sometimes there's just not a lot of options because you haven't been replenished in a while and the cooks have already done what they can to keep people from bitching at them constantly. Fresh fruits and vegetables are always the first to spoil, so eventually everything is canned, frozen, rehydrated, or reconstituted. Or baked from scratch, poorly.
I've seen these pictures attributed to USS Abraham Lincoln on some other sites.
That ship recently suffered a major supply crisis while it was on station in the middle east. The reason is that Iran was able to deny the use of all of the nearby bases with their drones and medium range missiles. Thus the US Navy resorted to resupplying Abraham Lincoln from Diego Garcia, which is thousands of miles away.
So it's plausible to me that these are real images, and they represent a very serious problem for the navy: both in terms of total calories and in the loss of morale from low quality.
In any case, Abraham Lincoln has since been relieved, and will make a liberty port call in Thailand after 245 days at sea.
fwiw the first and last images in this post both were first published in this USA today article back in April, attributed to anonymous crew members of the USS Tripoli and USS Abraham Lincoln.
There aren’t enough calories pictured in these images
My biggest complaint about the pics is the trays are different. The military probably has a standard tray that they buy, and likely wouldn't use a compostable lidded container as shown in pic one.
I can't speak for the modern military, but when I was in almost 30 years ago there were not standard trays. The chow halls were different from base to base.
I mean, 2 of the 3 pictures that show trays show the same trays. The rest are all takeout containers, which are the kind of consumable that makes sense to be just whatever Supply can requisition. And I'm more likely to believe different tray styles per class, I.e. submarines might have a more efficient (and therefore costlier) design for more cramped quarters that a carrier doesn't necessarily need.
Idk... I feel like that kind of incompetence is almost unimaginable with an unprecedentedly well-funded organization known the world over for its logistical capabilities... But the people saying it's fake happen to be the biggest liary lying liars there ever were, so im a bit divided.
Caloric intake is one of the complaints of people on the ship...the tortilla one is for sure real, that's from when the stories first started coming out.
They have been getting shafted because Iran destroyed the resupply hubs (months ago,) and the US admin and their hack armed services leaders neglected to send resupply ships from elsewhere.
Because we have all the wrong people in charge, even before this president.

Speak for your terrible school district. Mine growing up, and my kid's today, had magnitudes better food than this slop.

apprehensivecrab1@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 5d

If you can join the most expensive military in the world, you are not nearly as desperate as, for example, people who survive in NATO without that.
Also nowhere near as desperate as the people whose countries NATO keeps invading.
whereitsat@lemmy.zip · 6 pts · 5d
there are lots of ways to 'survive.'
let me ask you question: what's worse from a moral standpoint: stealing an old ladies purse or killing someone? what about pitching a tent on land that someone else owns? what about parking your RV in a wal-mart parking lot overnight?
some of those things are crimes and you'll be looked down upon even if you don't get caught.
so, why do we say 'thank for your service' and then turn around and see the thief as less than human?
i'd rather have someone poach on my land than bust into my house and shoot me in the face. i'd think anyone would feel that way.
HerbGrower@slrpnk.net · 6 pts · 5d

the reason is capitalism. but it doesn’t excuse those who voluntarily join.
zeezee@slrpnk.net · 15 pts · 5d
would you say the same for ICE? they also recruit from poor migrant communities because they're most desperate and the pay and perks are good - would you say they're justified in joining and terrorising the ones that didn't?
and while I 100% agree that propaganda and the system failing them is the main reason driving that - we don't counter the propaganda by normalising the poor-to-terrorist pipeline as "well the system sucks but you gotta do what you gotta do" - there are red lines and if we could collectively resist them - we starve the system from being able to force people into the meat grinder
Tomorrow_Farewell@lemmy.ml · 11 pts · 5d

Fuck'em. This is better than they deserve.

what do soldiers fighting a cruel and meaningless war expect luxury meals?
Agent641@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 5d
HerbGrower@slrpnk.net · 3 pts · 5d
They didn't like unsalted broccoli and couldn't work out how to sprinkle salt on it?

Apytele@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 5d
I was gonna say, if your other options are poverty / prison, this isn't actually a bad deal practically speaking. Not gonna get into the ethics of military service other than to say blaming individuals for trying to escape poverty isn't the answer. When I teach about chronic institutionalization in a psychiatric context, the military is one of the susceptible demographics alongside prison and long term hospitalization.

gagcar@lemmus.org · 2 pts · 6d
No. There are culinary specialists that think instead of going down to storerooms to get another thing of tomato sauce for spaghetti, they can just cut what is left with ketchup as it needs replenishing. They are buddy fuckers and some of the laziest, most corrupt(?)(eg, you had to know someone, or be a woman, to get good food that wasn’t on the serving line) people I met in the service.

zalgotext@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 5d

Gladaed@feddit.org · -1 pts · 6d
Probably fake or misleading. There aren't enough calories pictured in these images.
warbond@lemmy.world · 22 pts · 6d
Or baked from scratch, poorly.
mkwt@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 6d
I've seen these pictures attributed to USS Abraham Lincoln on some other sites.
That ship recently suffered a major supply crisis while it was on station in the middle east. The reason is that Iran was able to deny the use of all of the nearby bases with their drones and medium range missiles. Thus the US Navy resorted to resupplying Abraham Lincoln from Diego Garcia, which is thousands of miles away.
So it's plausible to me that these are real images, and they represent a very serious problem for the navy: both in terms of total calories and in the loss of morale from low quality.
In any case, Abraham Lincoln has since been relieved, and will make a liberty port call in Thailand after 245 days at sea.
bedwyr@piefed.ca · 5 pts · 6d
But they were without supply for half a year, sending a ship from the US takes a couple of weeks. This is just bad leadership.
cypherpunks@lemmy.ml · 11 pts · 6d
fwiw the first and last images in this post both were first published in this USA today article back in April, attributed to anonymous crew members of the USS Tripoli and USS Abraham Lincoln.
Tolookah@discuss.tchncs.de · 8 pts · 6d
My biggest complaint about the pics is the trays are different. The military probably has a standard tray that they buy, and likely wouldn't use a compostable lidded container as shown in pic one.
stupe@lemmy.zip · 13 pts · 6d
I can't speak for the modern military, but when I was in almost 30 years ago there were not standard trays. The chow halls were different from base to base.
Gladaed@feddit.org · -9 pts · 6d
Can you give any sources? Personal experience from an anonymous account on a niche website isn't to be taken as truth :(
stupe@lemmy.zip · 27 pts · 6d
Sorry, I didn't take pictures of the trays 30 years ago. I really don't care if you believe it or not. Just making a comment.
ZapBeebz_@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 6d
I mean, 2 of the 3 pictures that show trays show the same trays. The rest are all takeout containers, which are the kind of consumable that makes sense to be just whatever Supply can requisition. And I'm more likely to believe different tray styles per class, I.e. submarines might have a more efficient (and therefore costlier) design for more cramped quarters that a carrier doesn't necessarily need.
ImgurRefugee114@reddthat.com · 3 pts · 6d
Idk... I feel like that kind of incompetence is almost unimaginable with an unprecedentedly well-funded organization known the world over for its logistical capabilities... But the people saying it's fake happen to be the biggest liary lying liars there ever were, so im a bit divided.
