If you died tonight and people had to sort out your stuff, what would be the weirdest, most unexplainable trinket in your possession?

I have four big black bins in my closet, full of… adult stuff I think those would definitely qualify. Maybe the foxtails, or my hot pink bunny mask, I’ve got a bunch of weird costumes that would raise eyebrows

empireOfLove2@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 38 pts · 2d

Nah those are perfectly explainable. U jus freaky like dat

Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 8 pts · 2d

I don’t think anyone in my family is ready to confront the reality of a knotted dragon dick, but my friends have all seen Chance before!

I have a family member who has walked in on tail things, but even that family member would not be prepared for the sheer quantity of tails…

webghost0101@sopuli.xyz · 47 pts · 2d (7 replies)

Honestly, my network and server.

I am self learned so i often come up with my own creative solutions instead of knowing about a common standard. I can’t imagine anyone but me could maintain it.

In a previous iteration of my server i bent over backwards to make sure /home did not contain any user folders and instead only the mount points to numerous drives. Why? Inexplicably even if you do consider autism.

daggermoon@piefed.world · 10 pts · 2d

You sound like me.

DaGeek247@fedia.io · 9 pts · 2d

What the fuck. That's hilarious. My first thought for this questions was 'sex toys' too, but those are easy to explain. I also have a dildo lamp, but I got that from my sister, so also very easy to explain.

My tech stuff is likely going to be the least explainable, but because it's eBay scrap parts hardware, not because I changed /home to a mounting folder though. That's crazy.

diaphragmwp@discuss.tchncs.de · 3 pts · 1d (3 replies)

Sooooooo you only login as root?

webghost0101@sopuli.xyz · 1 pts · 11h

Also no, and my admin user started with a capital. Which was also a pain to setup.

I am discribing my previous system though, my current system runs proxmox and is considerably more normal.. though only as normal as i understand it to be.

njordomir@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 23h

My first home server did something like this. I didn't understand permissions very well yet (still not 100%, but certainly much more capable now). I think I used /var and maybe /etc to hold my docker compose folders.

beliquititious@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 42 pts · 2d (3 replies)

Weirdest for sure would be the contents of my journals. For a while during and after the pandemic I wrote a lot of entries very altered and I've also written a lot of entries at the top of some pretty spectacular manic episodes and the bottom of some very dark holes. I can't read them myself because they make me seem quite insane.

Most unexplainable would be a 50 alliance credit note from the Firefly/Serenity universe. They were produced by a gaggle of nerds and exact down to the paper, which is a semi-transparent nylon blend. I was given 300 credits in mixed bills as a joke from someone I had a one night stand with as payment for services rendered, but I've given them out to various fans of the show I've met over the 20 or so years they've been in my possession. If you weren't a mega fan of the show though, they would look like money from some obscure Asian country.

An antique magic wand made of carved oak and opals, I keep locked in an antique wooden case in the top / back of my closet. The entire reason I keep it there like that, is so that when I die, someone will find it.

A military medal that was awarded to me.

I have never been a member of any nation’s armed forces.

Pika@hikki.team · 18 pts · 2d (8 replies)

I need the story now

Noel_Skum@sh.itjust.works · 42 pts · 2d (6 replies)

It’s not really that exciting, in retrospect:

I used to work for a charity doing construction in disaster areas; building schools, medical centres, plumbing etc. We’d turn up after wars, floods, earth quakes and other stuff like that. Most of us were single men, with zero attachments or responsibilities, so we took the more (potentially) dangerous jobs out there - purely for the adrenaline and the madness.

On arrival in the country a car load of us traveled 100km-ish away from the capital to scout the location we’d be at. After a day or two there we discovered that the situation on the ground really didn’t match the information we’d been given. A rebel army, of sorts, (maybe a militia, more accurately) had regrouped and were coming back towards us. As we were, uh, not local then there was the potential for some kidnapping - or worse - type shenanigans.

Me, 2 colleagues and our fixer (and his mother) decided to get out of there immediately. We “swapped” the charity’s car for a battered Toyota and some local clothes from our fixer’s uncle. (I’m sure he had about 600 uncles in total…)

We encountered a four man forward operations group of the proper army on the road. They asked us to follow them and detour to a village and help evacuate a group of people. We got there, “borrowed” a coach, loaded it up and then we got out of there, quick sharp. Zero incidents.

I don’t think we got the medal for bravery, as such, but more for a lack of cowardice and just doing the right thing when we really could’ve just fucked-off straight to the capital and boarded a plane out of there.

I didn’t mention it when I got back home because if I did it would just look like I was glazing myself - or lying.

Saber_is_dead@lemmy.world · 32 pts · 2d (2 replies)

It’s not really that exciting,

Mate. That's exciting as fuck.

Noel_Skum@sh.itjust.works · 11 pts · 2d

I think we ran on adrenaline, fear, and cigarettes for about seven / eight hours… numb, in a kind of autopilot. Apart from the pressure of a fighting force that we never actually encountered it was like a really aggressive hitchhike ride through some extremely gnarly terrain in an underdeveloped country. It sounds far more exciting, and heroic, than it genuinely was.

But, yeah, between you and me I do think it was a cool as fuck thing to do - and survive…

MajorMajormajormajor@lemmy.ca · 9 pts · 2d

Literally saved peoples lives, "a bit boring, honest!". I want to see what exciting is to them...

Pika@hikki.team · 6 pts · 2d

Doubling other commenter. This absolutely is insane and cool and worthy of a medal.

dave@feddit.uk · 5 pts · 1d (1 reply)

I want to hear the story about the fixer’s mother. She sounds impressive.

Noel_Skum@sh.itjust.works · 8 pts · 1d

She worked and lived in the town we’d driven to. She was like a teacher, nurse, midwife type for the local women and children around there. She’d been campaigning for the “medical centre” we were gonna build. Seemed friendly, but a little suspicious/wary of us; but that’s kind of understandable. Great cook and a good singer. Super passionate about helping people to be well and better themselves.

The rebels weren’t hugely into female autonomy and education our fixer told us… so we told him to go grab her as we swapped clothes and readied the truck.

I didn’t spend much time with her when we began fleeing because me and my two colleagues bounced around in the flat bed of the Toyota whilst she was upfront in the cab with her son.

You could see she’d been crying - hard - when we got to the other village but she then kind of took charge of the situation and got all the folk onto the coach and started taking care of everyone. She was genuinely pretty solid all around, when she needed to be.

I went back about a year and a half later for the same project and she almost hugged me to death and just wept - I don’t think I’ve ever encountered such raw emotion.

Nothing but respect for her.

helpImTrappedOnline@lemmy.world · 20 pts · 2d

Imagine their entire family has no idea where the medal came from, but like 12 random people on the internet have the full story.

whoxtank28@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 2d (2 replies)

I don't have to read fairy tales to refute that they were real events that actually happened. I would tend to agree with your overall sentiment, but if someone was raised non-religious, had to take history classes, and had a light exposure to different mythological frameworks, I would not say that they are uninformed if they claim to be atheist. I dont have to do a deep dive on Christmas lore to come to the conclusion that Santa is not real.

Went to a religious school and hated everything about the religion. Its awful. Constantly being forced to pray and sing, occasionally having to kneel on a hardwood floor with all your weight on your knees. My knees still hurt thinking about it. Fuck everything about it.

Then I got in trouble for saying I didn't believe in god at the age of like 9 or so. Didn't change my opinion, if anything it reinforced how much I hate religion. But I kept quiet about it to keep out of trouble.

whoxtank28@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d

Sorry you went through that. I went through the average American evangelical upbringing on the tail of the "satanic panic". D&D, Pokemon, most television shows, horror movies, certain music, all satanic...Gay people bad, willful women bad, closeted racist predispositions...Evolution and science, wrong...Young earth beliefs...

I bought it all initially because I was not as well educated as I could have been. Luckily, I rolled a high intelligence score, and managed to break out. I look back at that me with disdain and regret, I was a horrible person on religion...

I just read books on everything that I was trained to think was wrong. Evolution fake? Read "On the Origin of Species". Communism is an evil satan movement? read the communist manifesto (did not turn me communist, but at least I understand it). Other religions are wrong? Look into some of their texts, look at them from a historic/mythical lense. Conclusion, religions are myths, and nearly nothing I was told as a kid was as black and white as I thought it was...

I built it myself, and you've got no hope of figuring out what it's for if you don't know already.

I have a cursed mouse.

Not like a taxidermied mouse, but a cursed computer mouse.

It looks and functions like a normal wireless mouse... Until you get to a page where there is horizontal scrolling capability. Instantly, the mouse will scroll the page all the way to the right. This is especially fun in spreadsheets. The mouse will do this even if it is turned off. The problem is really the wireless reciver, not the actually mouse, but it is still a fun cursed object that I hope to someday unleash on some unsuspecting sibling.

orenj@leminal.space · 1 pts · 16h

Didnt know I needed an accursed taxidermized mouse until now...

forbiddencherry@lemmy.today · 11 pts · 2d

Nice try, feds... Just kidding, I think my place would be pretty boring, actually.

Also I have no idea who would be sorting through my stuff. I'm what's called a "solo ager". I imagine that the first thing to go deliquent would be property taxes. So maybe some city worker that prepares houses to be auctioned or something? Or maybe they don't bother with that and whoever buys my place from auction will be the ones to deal with it?

In my younger years I was a really bad pack rat but I've been pretty successful in getting rid of things (mostly donating it). I always wondered why my grandparents had such barren houses. They weren't rich but they weren't poor. But I did a decent amount of traveling for work with a single carry-on and realized how little I actually need or care about anymore. So the stuff I have is basically utilitarian now. Stuff I don't use is just more to clean and maybe someone else could benefit from it. Even have spare room in my storage shed and I can access everything, which felt like a major accomplishment.

Why'd he have a Super Nintendo mouse but not the system, no games, nor anything else related?

Nobody will actually ask that, though. Because nobody would assume it was anything other than an old-school computer mouse with an obsolete connector. And even if they did recognize what it was, nobody would think twice about how odd it is to have that, and only that. The only strange thing, maybe, is that it's stored with my keepsakes and not the rest of my obsolete tech, various cords, & connectors.

But the answer is: When I went away to college, I didn't take my video game stuff with me. My cousins asked to use my SNES and games, so I gave them permission while I was away. They grabbed everything except the mouse. At some point, they decided to sell my stuff to help purchase their Playstation, so I never got my SNES or games back. Then when my parents lost their house to foreclosure a few years later, they packed my things into a box, and gave it to me. I've held onto it for all these decades.

I have a couple guns and of course ammo that corresponds. (No kids have access to the residence). The thing I've noticed though is that I do have a couple rounds that aren't for the guns I currently own. So if I died and someone went through my house they would probably be confused trying to find some hidden gun that corresponds to those. 1 of the rounds I actually just found laying on the floor after I moved in, so it wasn't even mine. I should really find someone to give them too so I dont leave someone panicked about moving a new resident in and thinking a kid may find the "missing" guns.

God I wish. It would be glorious. I would ride it through the streets like the king of wicker Epirus

Teeth. Or did I get rid of them? I hope I did. They're my kid's baby teeth. I found them in a wee box when I moved a while ago, I hope I got rid of them 😱.

Unfinished projects. It's amazing how hard it can be for someone else to see the vision on something until it reaches a certain point.

Also my second knife I forged, the first one being a beautiful bowie that sold at a charity auction the second being a crusty shank with an unpolished metal tang loop around as the handle.

Everyone always laughs when I say "sure I have a knife" for something and break it out.

My journals.

On an unrelated note, how does one dispose of a sexdoll? Asking for a friend. 🤷‍♀️

Reading this thread, although I am kinda demirose I feel like the best reason to want a partner is to have someone do away with your "dirty" collection. Unless whoever would go through it (typically family) just happen to already know all your secret kinks and not be weirded out by them.

My parents will probably be dead by then, but I'm the oldest of a bunch of siblings. I don't keep a huge collection or anything (almost everything I've ever bought is disposable), but I always cringe every time I buy any new supplies wondering "What if I die before this is used up? What are they gonna think?".

I'm not particularly ashamed of my set of kinks, but one of them can read as questionable based on common conception, and while I assume most of them are at least a little kink aware, not one of them seems to be very freaky themselves (which, if they are, they don't let on, and I haven't figured it out (well played... 🥷)), so I worry some about what they'll think when they find it, or what the niblings would think if they ever heard about it.

But even in the worse case scenario I'll be too dead to care.

tiramichu@sh.itjust.works · 8 pts · 1d (1 reply)

I'm laughing at the possibility that all your siblings are actually kinky as hell but each of you keeps it carefully to yourselves so you all believe you're the only one who isn't super vanilla.

i cleaned out my uncle’s apartment room because of similar thoughts. he passed from heroin. did not want grandma to see that stuff. so i cleaned it up. along with his copy of “girls who eat girls”. such an odd name for a porno.

oopsgodisdeadmybad@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 2d (1 reply)

I cannot stand the industry's tendency to call them "girls". "Women who eat women" isn't really that weird, unless you've never consumed any porn before.

hansolo@lemmy.today · 5 pts · 2d

unless you've never consumed

I don't think that's a problem for the women in the porn.

diegantobass@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 2d (2 replies)

The amount of log. The pictures, the journals, the dedicated web apps to keep track of things... It would be too much work to sort through and would go to waste, I'm sure. That's why I've started a new habit of "making things usable". When I die, would someone be able to go through my stuff, search in it, find the bits that are interesting?

Feathercrown@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2d (1 reply)

Unironically this would make a great service. I'm sure there are people who have amazing things hidden away.

NeatNit@discuss.tchncs.de · 7 pts · 2d

Not even a joke for me. But it's a bone, singular.

Long story short: I picked it up from a jungle floor in Kenya. No clue what animal it belonged to. Also no idea how there was no issue taking it back home... Anyway, it's on display.

I have a box of "crafting ingredients" in my closet. It is full of buttons, aluminum scales, wire, leather cord, thread, random electrical components, ect...

A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1d

nothing, because I doubt anyone that would clean out my belongings would give enough of a fuck to think about anything before stuffing it into a bag and throwing it in a dumpster.

I come across shit all the time that I’m like “what the fuck even is this? Why do I have this?” And it goes in a “what the fuck?” Box until I either figure it out or the heat death of the universe happens, whichever comes first.

As for actual stuff I know the use for, I have a light ball a friend gave me as a housewarming gift. It doesn't work anymore, it doesn't have buttons or any way to replace batteries, it was shake activated, but there’s nothing loose bumping around in it, and the weight is well distributed so it doesnt really feel like there’s anything in it, and transitioned through colors. It is flat on one side but otherwise a white ball about the size of a baseball, which would likely make people go “what the fuck? This a cat toy or smth?”

AceFuzzLord@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 2d

I'm not gonna embarrass myself with the first set of things, so probably a few things on my devices. I have some NSFW and SFW kinda spicy stuff on my laptop, 2 desktops, and phone. Things I would personally be kinda embarrassed about sharing with people that aren't furries... it's yiff and SFW furry writing of mine. A lot of incomplete writing, mind you.

BigPotato@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 15h

Everything is explainable to people who know me, sadly but - for the sake of the prompt - let's just say they pull random people in off the street for some reason. Is it the eeePC that's weird? The four PlayStations and one PSOne with a Japanese copy of the game of life with controller? The piles of cardboard and boxes in the garage, some of which are cut into shapes that may eventually turn into a cardboard 1/10 scale truck? The medical tubing and zip ties?

No, I'm willing to be the most unexplainable thing to strangers would be...

Two copies of Catherine: Full Body on the Switch, still sealed in their packaging. I've got a bunch of Switch games so at first glance finding a Switch game isn't so weird but why two? And why are they both unopened?

sunsofold@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 18h (1 reply)

Nothing, but just because my weird things are already out in plain view. They aren't shameful secrets. They're just my things.

vk8kv@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 15h

This! People hide their interests cuz "they are weird" or "I don't want my friends to know about this", its just your interests the people who support stay that's all 🤷‍♂️

I knew a tattoo artist who bought a Bad Dragon just for the lulz. He went in with another member of the shop, and they had fun hiding it in different places for people to find.
