Worst part is a modern US Jesus would be all eat-the-rich anti-establishment, founder of a commune (or several as he travels), and get killed "by accident" in an ICE raid.

sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 53 pts · 218d (1 reply)

Remember the Hermain Cain Award subreddit?

Hundreds of documented cases of people vehemently refusing real treatment for a 'fake' disease, being immensely cocky and belligerent untill very nearly the end, and then, near the end... still somewhere between defiant, in denial, and delusional.

... Those are the private citizens in the US with the vast majority of the guns.

You are completely correct, many areas of the US will collapse into pockets of highly armed, highly religious cults, utterly bereft of anything resembling logic, beyond the sociopathic logic of how to run a cult.

Basically, a couple of David Koresh's for every county. Good luck!

Lucelu2@lemmy.zip · 7 pts · 218d

I am convinced that gun owners should be required to carry gun insurance... (policies for every gun they own) and I say that as a gun owner.... we have to carry car insurance, another lethal weapon that at least has a plausible other function. I live in a Blue State. Liberals also own guns, we just don't post pictures of them or open carry them in public. We actually follow the laws of our state for permits.

echodot@feddit.uk · 24 pts · 218d (5 replies)

Anybody who says "we're a God fearing family" should be immediately locked up.

Firstly because it's a meaningless platitude that doesn't actually make sense, and secondly because it actually means ";-) I'm a Nazi, but obviously I would get offended if you ever actually called me out on it".

No nice person has ever said that.

CannonFodder@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 218d

It kinda makes sense to me. If I believed in the judeo christian god - an omnipotent being that has a vengeful, murderous history and has the emotional maturity of a 3 yo - yes I'd be living in fear of it.

"I have no Ethics or Morals, so I only ever do the right thing because I fear the wrath of an All Knowing and All Powerful entity if I don't"

echodot@feddit.uk · 4 pts · 217d (1 reply)

You missed the second bit, which is

"All the time acting in a manner that does not in fact suggest that I actually believe in an all-knowing entity. But rather in a way that suggests that I am using religion as a shield for being the world's worst person"

Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 217d

I don't just mean that person, I mean anybody who would believe that "I'm a God fearing person" is actually the right thing to say.

I mean, if one thinks about it, it's curious that anybody would openly states that their relation to one's God is "Fear" rather than, say "Love", even if they are being entirely truthful in that.

"God loving" sounds a lot more respectful of a Deity, IMHO.

Further, even for that specific person my point still fits in a twisted way: that person chose that specific expression because deep down they believe people only restrain their bad actions because of fearing retribution.

It's a variant of Psychological Projection and thus still betrays that person's moral makeup: even as non-believers they use the "Fear of God" mantra because they themselves think that claiming that one has one's behavior under constant oversight from a deity which will punish bad behavior is the best way to convince others that one behaves in a good way, and they think so because they themselves restrict their negative behavior towards others through fear of external reprisal rather than through internal mechanisms such as guilt or a personal moral.

Even when people lie, you can still tell a lot about somebody by which lies they think will work best at convincing others.

Zink@programming.dev · 3 pts · 217d

Firstly because it's a meaningless platitude that doesn't actually make sense

The world runs on meaningless platitudes for these people!

I am not disagreeing with you; you're very much correct. But I think it's important to point out and not just let it pass by.

It's all part of the talking point conditioning and conforming that the right leans on so heavily. You need to superficially signal the right virtues with your appearance and speech.

AdolfSchmitler@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 217d

Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 5 pts · 218d

Exactly.

It's a coping mechanism for having a purely emotional relationship (i.e. pure tribalism) with a political "side" that has now been going on for so long and so intensely that it has become part of their personal identity, and then being negativelly impacted by the choices of the leaders of "their" side.

By this point such people would have to accept that what is now a huge part of their personal identity is bullshit, and people with the psychological and intelectual maturity required to be able to accept something like that and move on wouldn't have become tribalist muppets in the first place.

They will never, ever do that, rather what they do is invent excuses and deflections of blame.

FosterMolasses@leminal.space · 4 pts · 217d

This but unironically.

It's called Sunk Cost Fallacy, a basic concept in economics that even explains how gambling addictions begin and why it's so hard for people to stop until they've lost everything.

I did and FPTP suggest the two most similar parties should merge... that is, unless the most similar party enjoys playing the controlled opposition. -In that case they might not merge but then supporting the opposition party continues to enable the party in power. So while it takes time for the Democrats and Republicans to merge, I'll be out here voting and advocating for real positive change.

surewhynotlem@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 216d (1 reply)

But with FPTP your vote for a third party changes nothing. It simply makes it easier for the other two to win.

Advocating and protesting work. That drives change.

NauticalNoodle@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 216d

it made it easier for Joseph Biden to win? Do you have any metrics for how much change you've personally affected through protest and "advocating?" as my vote counted for ~1:153,000,000 (not counting for delegates and electoralism.)

Tangentially, in 2020 I watched people protest police and its abusive practices, then when the same people got a chance to vote for the Democrat, he responded by increasing support for police nationwide.

The other reason I ask (and my tangent only reinforces this idea) is because there's an infamous paper from Princeton in 2014 that suggests sitting politicians Don't care what you think. -Direct source to the paper cited

I see the confusion. You're not voting FOR someone. That's not how this works.

You WILL get one of the two candidates as your next president. You vote AGAINST the worst one. It's that simple and no simpler.

3rd party is irrelevant until we get ranked choice voting. All it does is split the main two parties and strengthen the one you hate most.

masterflappie@europe.pub · -12 pts · 218d (5 replies)

Look up "parliament" to learn why casting any vote rather than rebuilding the whole system from scratch leads to supporting tyrants

Quill7513@slrpnk.net · 13 pts · 218d (1 reply)

that will never be on the ballot. the active socialist position is to vote for the least worst candidate with a chance of winning and organize on the margins to build the strength for a robust insurgency movement that can break the system and make a new one. organizing under hyperfascism is much more difficult than under neoliberal fascism. it's why big businesses switch to supporting overt fascism in times of decay. yes, the calculus is a little different if you're in a winner take all location with a heavy majority like maryland, illinois, or idaho. in those locations, go ahead, vote 3rd party to send a message that america isn't homogenous or a binary. or spend your day organizing on the margins. but you have to understand that the most votes a third party candidate ever mustered was 18%, and that candidate was a right wing libertarian with some very concerning views on race.

election day is all about finding a way to make the other 364 days of resistance continue to be possible. they've become much more difficult under the republican controlled apparatus

70% of them are fucking superstitious idiots who believe the craziest shit.

25% of them are of average intelligence who do their best and work hard.

5% of the are intelligent wonderful people who are highly technical and skilled.

The socio-economic reasons for why this occurs is interesting (at least to me). Remember farming has had centuries of pressure for migration for rural living to urban. Rural populations are isolated and historically have lacked access to higher education, healthcare, mental health, etc. So you have a constant brain drain, combined with lower relative mental and physical health.

So how the fuck do these morons manage to grow a crop? They outsource the decision making to "trusted advisors". Government agents, agronomist, fieldman, etc. these are the people who are actually making the day to day decisions on most of the these farms. What to fertilize with, what to spray, when to harvest, when to plant etc... they do it all the thinking while the idiots ride around in the luxury tractor cabins letting the GPS stear as they listen to talk radio or watch videos.

A lifted F150 doesn't make you a farmer.

Though I notice you never said you were a farmer.

All hat and no cattle.

shalafi@lemmy.world · -4 pts · 218d (1 reply)

Who said I had a lifted F150? Mine's 22-years old and looks like dogshit, runs great though.

No, I'm not a farmer, but I've been growing for 35-years, majored in horticulture and agriculture at Oklahoma State University, so I guess I know more than your average bear. Fair enough? Let's hear your credentials.

As to history, easy one: Machines and the Great Depression foreclosing family farms. Hell, you don't even need a history book, just read The Grapes of Wrath for a primer. As to history education, I scored 6 free college credits testing on the subject. You score any?

Were you around for the 1980s Farm Crisis? I was. There's another piece of what happened. John Cougar sing ya all about it if you don't care to read.

None the less, I roll 2,800 miles through the South every year. I observe what's what and who's doing it, talk to people. Those are shitloads of struggling family farms I'm seeing. In all those miles, I see exactly one farm that is truly a monster acreage. (TBF: Many of those miles are in Alabama, which is forestry vs. agriculture, another subject altogether. Another subject I'm educated in.)

Again, you want to tell these boys in person they ain't actually farming, mindlessly running machines in the employ of big ag, you go right ahead.

BTW, you ever figure how the quadratic equation works for real-life problems? I know. Farmers know.

resipsaloquitur@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 218d

No, I didn’t score six free history credits. I scored three by passing my AP US history exam.

I did test out of two calculus classes since I aced the more difficult AP calculus exam. Those were worth at least six credits.

You seem to agree with me that machinery has turned 50% of farmers into 3% and then ramble on as if you’d made a winning point.

Since you’re so smart maybe you can tell what the fuck any of the rest of what you said had to do with what I said?

Or I can say “just read Of Mice And Men” in a condescending way and take a victory lap and hurt my arm patting myself on the back.

Your choice.

They are hateful racists. It's really that simple

derfunkatron@lemmy.world · 22 pts · 217d

Their racism is ancillary and it’s not that simple. MAGA exploits several rotten elements in rural American society; racism is just one of them

I think the simplest explanation is that they have been conditioned to hate and fear first and do not consider any person innately equal until that person has proven themselves to be worthy of value. To enter the American south, you walk into a minefield of social faux pas and a mire of shibboleths. You fucked up just by driving in with “Yankee” license plates. Hell, you can fuck up by having the wrong county on your plates (which is a thing in the south). For a group of people who hate anything “woke” or involving critical theory, they are a textbook example of intersectionality; their identity is complex and why they don’t like you is even more complicated.

They have been conditioned to distrust anything they don’t immediately understand, dwell peacefully in contradiction, be selectively empathic, and ignore their own self-interests whenever it does not exclusively benefit them. This is the “temporarily embarrassed millionaire” and “my true reward awaits in heaven” crowd. You can’t reason with them because they answer to a higher power and it’s all part of god’s plan. And if you make the mistake of quoting scripture at them, they write you off as a know-it-all who has read the Bible but hasn’t read it with your heart.

They are generationally impoverished, both financially and intellectually. The south suffers from massive brain drain and financially successful people are just those that God has blessed. There’s no charity for those outside of their immediate social circle. There’s no such thing as southern hospitality, just public manners. Bless your heart, they’re talking shit before you walk out the door.

Southern society craves authoritarianism and aristocracy because blind respect for authority and power are deeply rooted in their culture and religion (and that’s exactly what the antebellum south was; that’s their “heritage”). Trump promises to make it all great and lift them back into their rightful place because they all think they will be the plantation master.

There's one house in my neighborhood that still has a "TRUMP LOW PRICES | KAMALA HIGH PRICES" sign in their yard. The kicker is that it's a black family and the house is in a subsidized housing development funded by the county. Just needs a "BEWARE OF FACE-EATING LEOPARDS" sign next to it.

The state runs the media. The media informs the masses which people are the enemy/stupid, the masses join together to feel good that they're not stupid. They put more money into campaign funds to buy signs from the government that's holding them down, all while feeling self-righteous.

TerdFerguson@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 218d (1 reply)

Oh this is interesting logic. So you're saying: it's not the party/president that actually did the shitty thing thats at fault, but because the other party/president allowed the possibility and did not do enough to prevent the current one from doing so.

Is that what you mean by "set the stage"?

NauticalNoodle@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 216d

I mean the initial party you mention already did enough shitty things and as a result they dumped water on the fire that was their own support setting the stage for a criminal, serial-adulterer, hate-monger to win the election for the second time. If the Democrat-candidate realized that nobody owes them anything and actually tried to earn the support of the voters, she'd probably be president now, but somehow she got into a contest of "who's the bigger narciscist" just like Hillary, and everybody lost except Trump, but that's only a small reason why I didn't vote for this deeply unpopular candidate. Regardless, if the democrat establishment can't figure this out, they will continue losing elections.

More to the point -if the elected official does not represent the will or desire of the people then what kind of Democracy(aka a 'representative democratic republic') can really exist?

Like, not to knock MA, but your mileage really varies based on which neighborhood you're in. The closer you come to NH, the worse things get. And Boston varies heavily by zip code, based on the prevailing income bracket.

Is the state better than West Virginia or Idaho or South Dakota? Sure. But its not some kind of paradise. You're still in a heavily privatized and financialized capitalist hell-hole. You just live closer to the money, and that's where we put all our nice things.

BeardededSquidward@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 217d

Yeah, know there's variation even with where I live. Fair enough though, just that it'd be nice to have better job access than I do now. As well as generally better social safety nets. Had a friend be let go from a position in the area and while it took a while, his unemployment was like 80-90% of his income. Here, 40% is the best you get. The states I live in or nearby rely on a revolution of unemployment and employment for many people.

UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 216d (1 reply)

Why would they?

California's the 7th largest economy in the world. You can't tell me that their domestic policies have no impact on their cost of living.

If people in a blue state are hurt by the tariffs, it’s still Trump’s fault.

Tariffs aren't the only public policy on the table. Plenty of our inflation has come from chronically poor real estate policies, droughts brought in by climate change, energy shortages from data center consumption, and a contraction in the labor market caused by Boomer retirements.

States, blue and red, have experienced inflation going back to COVID and before it.

Liberals only seem to notice when it's conservatives complaining under a Republican president. And their panacea - just vote Dem to fix it - never seems to deliver the promised relief.

MiddleAgesModem@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 216d

California’s the 7th largest economy in the world.

You can't possibly think that means they can supply everything they currently have themselves. That makes no sense.

You're blaming very recent economic trends that are the result of Trump's idiotic tariff policy on policies that have been in place for decades? Economic trends affected everywhere, not just blue states.

Can you explain why Democrat policies are the cause of the recent trend in RED STATES?

And what, JUST NOW, those policies stared having this effect and the tariffs are irrelevant?

No, Americans everywhere are suffering because Trump is an incompetent clown.

All the other things you've mentioned existed before the rising price hikes and Trump's stupid policy. Amazingly, they didn't cause these price rises UNTIL Trump's policies came into effect. What a coincidence.

Inflation always happens, yes, but this is not run of the mill inflation. This is the price of commodities rising directly due to the tariff policy. Covid caused huge inflation because the world shut down and needed time to start back up. It dropped precipitously under Biden. Things have only gotten worse since Trump took over.

You're desperately to downplay the effects of Trump's policies and it's absolutely ridiculous. Can you not take responsibility for anything?

So us not having a "panacea" discredits us entirely? Where's your panacea? The economy has been stronger under Democrats recently. Trump raises the debt more, he gives breaks to billionaires and we're LOSING jobs under him (Biden had twice the job growth than Trump in his first term). Cost of living is undeniably rising and maybe you're worried you won't be able to just blame it on Democrats like you do to mask all of your other failures.

Democrats aren't perfect but Republicans are deluded maniacs that openly support a convicted felon child rapists as the president.
