Clips is a TikTok-like vertical video stream where users can scroll through excerpts from Netflix series, films, and specials, as well as trailers for upcoming titles.
CEOs are really herd animals, always looking what the other guy is doing and living in a continuous fear of missing out the next big thing. It sure doesn't help with shareholders breathing down their neck pushing for short term profit and growth.
I fucking love Lemmy. This is what I don't get from normies that is plentiful here. In here, every little thing will turn into something to make fun of, and has the potential of turning into an entirely new sub-conversation.
Thank you for being like that, honestly.
To answer your question, you need to keep the 'hat' part, but the 'tot' can be anything you want, as long as it's kept to 3 characters. I would suggest starting with something like 'a..', filling the blanks, and going down from there. That's what I'm calling you, 'tot' was a typo š
I mean, I agree, but at the same time you've got to be trying to keep up or your business dies. Like, if blockbuster has tried to compete with Netflix instead of ignoring it, we'd still have blockbuster
Block buster didn't have ads turning the movie, just some trailers you could skip. Plus when I went to block buster we'd find something(s) and go home an watch it. Not this scroll through a mountain of the same crap in different categories just to maybe find something after a much longer period of time.
we also had ads in the store. you got good at tuning them out. i remember gettting lost trying to find a movie because i forgot we had an animated section. first day at the new store.
The only ads in the store I remember where card board signs similar to what you see at the theater. That's not at all the same as 1 or more 30 second unskippable add.
there were also these TVs in the store. sometimes we'd get to watch movies, sometimes they'd have these ads on them. one summer i was working 3 or 4 jobs i can't remember (it was a summer) and one of them was blockbuster.
The argument would be that these "short form videos" improve discoverability. I can't speak for Netflix (since I'm not subscribed), but I am subscribed to Disney+. I completely agree that the discoverability in the Disney+ app is bad. But I'm also subscribed to Hulu, which is now owned (fully) by Disney. The discoverability in Hulu is actually pretty good.
Everything that is "Disney+ Exclusive" is only available using Disney+. Everything that is "Hulu Exclusive" is available on both Hulu and Disney+. So Disney+ has everything I want, but the app sucks.
The plan is by the end of 2026 to turn down the Hulu app and only use the Disney+ app. So, is Disney improving the Disney+ app? Nope, they're adding "Verts".
This is what bothers me. If you have an interesting idea to improve your app, do that. If you're just chasing the current flavor of the week, stop. Spend that time doing something useful.
i think the verts is more competing with youtube's competing with tiktok, yeah. but i also think i'm very much not the target audience. i'm a long form video. if i'm going to give the filmmaker the respect of my time, give me the respect of at least thirty minutes of plot dammit. or at least thirty minutes of michael bay level explosions and a bowl of popcorn. fill me with bread and send in the clowns dammit. fuck dammit i had to mention bread. the baker gets to the bakery in an hour i bet i could pinch a loaf. look what you've done.
But yeah, I used to export shows from my Tivo, decrypt them, run them through comskip, re-encode to divx them with handbrake and store them on cds :)
Most 30m shows had at least 7-8 minutes of commercials. Some cartoons had 2 shows in a 30m timeslot, commercials up to the 1m mark, 10m of show, commercial break to the next show, 6-7m of ads, ran up to 2-3 mins before the half our and had another commercial or three shove in the outro.
What is the point of a paid service with ads? Its just really odd, like who has money for Netflix and whatever shit they are advertising? And everyone will resent these added ads on this platform, so why pay Netflix to make people hate your product.
Cable was a shitty service. It was expensive, you had to subscribe to a bunch of shit you didn't want for just a few programs you did, and was full of ads. People dropped cable for streaming because it was cheaper, centralized, and didn't have ads.
Now that cable is essentially dead, streaming is bringing back the high prices and the ads, and now you have to sign up for a bunch of shit you don't want for the few programs you do.
What's the point? They know customers are full of piss and wind, threatening blue murder while doing absolutely nothing beyond jaw flapping. (Same with gamers).
Amazon's service model, for example, is to twiddle the knobs to just under the point where the majority ragequit: the sweet spot of maximum profit right now. Everyone else is copying it.
And the sweet spot moves - probably like boiling a frog. A major player does something many hate, but not everyone/enough and those people live with it. Then it becomes the new normal. Twiddle the knob. Rinse and repeat.
I canceled my Netflix when they did the account sharing shenanigans, and filled out the exit survey explaining why. I had only kept my Netflix because my parents watched it, then they made it so hard to add a family member addon account I said fuck it and canceled everything.
My parents signed up for their own account, so Netflix didn't lose total count, but they lost the extra subscriber that was the whole point. I know I am an edge case in not just complaining while taking it, but there is always hope.
Amazonās service model, for example, is to twiddle the knobs to just under the point where the majority ragequit
I mean, I get Amazon Prime via their shopping service whether I want it or not. And half of their "library" such that it exists is just links out to other paid premium services. Nevermind their Netflix-esque habit of cancelling or delaying popular shows while churning out lots of AI slop to fill in the gaps.
There's no strong incentive to drop Prime Shipping (because it's dirt cheap and I still do plenty of retail shopping on Amazon). But I find myself going to their TV / Movies selection less and less frequently. Occasionally just pirate the Amazon show I already have access to out of convenience.
Can't say the same of Netflix, though. Cancelled that shit a few years ago. Barely anything left worth pirating from it anymore.
I kind of doubt prime is a good deal considering how many online store offer free shipping (with out a paid subscription!) and actually give you REAL arrival estimate dates.
That's just misinformation. I put some shows onto a Jellyfin instance and not a single one has disappeared. Not even an email about something being dropped soon. So that's a core part of the Netflix experience you're just not getting with Jellyfin.
Heck, it doesn't even randomly force me to watch in 1080p or 720p despite being on the 4K plan and the show/movie being available in 4K. It's like Jellyfin isn't even trying.
The fact that they keep pushing the envelope with more and more ads and higher costs show that people are willing to go along with it. That is sad to think about
No one should be surprised, cable tv played out the same way. Got you hooked on content and then started shoving ads in so often they sped up credits or ran the credits under the commercial break to squeeze just a biiiiiit more out of you
Goddamn, that's ridiculous. I can't say I seen that one myself, but I also haven't really watched cable in like a decade. I wish I could be surprised or even consider the idea even remotely hyperbolic.
TBS were the biggest offenders. It's only slightly sped up. I only noticed because they were airing reruns of something i had watched 1.2 billion times on dvd. Really fucks with the comedic pacing when they do that. But any amount sped up can make a 22 minute show air in 21:45 or even 21:30... One or two commercials more.
We all hate it, but for every one of us who will cancel thereās ten more who will just keep paying no matter how bad it gets.
Just takes one show and a lack of motivation to self host a solution, and these companies own every popular show and nearly the entire pipeline of creation.
Advertisements work so well everybody is trying to put them everywhere to make more money. Itās just that simple. Reddit is effectively full vertical video and photo content if you browse the site without logging in, because a few second video format is enough to slip in a quick ad without triggering people as much as a long format ad does, like infomercials of yore.
If we want the ads gone we need to regulate them away.
There is a great episode on the podcast ā99% invisibleā called āenshitification ā that precisely describes this action. Every device or āserviceā will do this once they feel they have you locked in. The case study was about John Deere and Apple, but applies here too. Interesting that John Deere settled their case and had to pay $99 million.
You know what old laptops are good for? 1 terabyte mini-SATA disks. You know what costs like four bucks on Temu? USB cases for 2.5 inch disks. You can put a lot of Linux ISOs on one and who cares if you never get it back?
When that happens I'll be gone. I'm already at the end of my rope when pausing to read something on the screen and two seconds later they fill my paused screen with an advertisement. It's starting to seem to me that everything happening in the world today is to deflect from the sneaky invasiveness of company's wanting to sell you their shit.
So done with Netflix. Streaming just isn't worth it any more; I have better things to do with my time.
Might I recommend a library card? Most libraries have a DVD/BlueRay collection to borrow. And there are books. Maybe the younguns might want to consider reading a few more books? It's good for you. Like eating vegetables for the mind.
...This made me realize how lazy I've become around movies. I don't like the effort involved in going to a place to physically borrow an object, then having to remember to repeat that later to return it.
Renting movies was a very normal part of my life in the past. I'm not proud of this laziness. I'm fine with going to movie theaters, so it doesn't make much sense.
It would be hilarious if all those company killed by streaming platform suddenly crawl back up from hell and make physical rental widely available again.
all streaming services is hemorrhaging money just to push out slop content. the streaming services will disintegrate before they go back to physical media.
I canāt for the life of me understand why people pay for this crap. Netflix used to be a great way to stream a bunch of shows you liked on a lot of different devices easily. It was like five dollars and it was definitely worth it just for the ease of use. Itās just too expensive now with too much crap on it that comes and goes. I have no idea why anybody puts up with it anymore. Itās either the high seas or just buy it on something like Apple TV.
Yeah, Iād like to know why people still pay for it as well. As soon as they brought back ads for paid tiers, I went back into the boat and never looked back. Shame itās only gotten worse.
Netflix also plans to introduce āpersonalized ad loads and frequency caps that dynamically adjust the ads our members see, based on their viewing behaviors.ā Netflix hasnāt shared any more details about how this could work. The big question is whether streaming more on Netflix could result in fewer ads per episode or film.
Same. People need to start reacting to that stuff and actually unsubscribe. If you go along with it complacently, companies are only going to double down.
Not to pimp out my YouTube channel, but I made a video recently about some streaming alternatives to Netflix that are ad-blocker friendly. (Though I have to describe those things in different terms so YT doesn't nuke the video.)
It's right here if anyone's interested. There are chapters in the description too if you're a TLDW type person and don't want to sit through the whole thing, which I totally understand.

How to make more people sail the high seas.

This is why they want you to have to verify your identity and give a DNA sample before you will be allowed near an electric device.

It would be hilarious if all those company killed by streaming platform suddenly crawl back up from hell and make physical rental widely available again.
Tollana1234567@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 91d
all streaming services is hemorrhaging money just to push out slop content. the streaming services will disintegrate before they go back to physical media.

Enshittification is inevitable. The only variable is how long it takes.
Cancel your subscription & come over to the Dark Side! (I do recommend learning some basics beforehand though)

Itās either the high seas or just buy it on something like Apple TV.
thingAmaBob@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 90d
Yeah, Iād like to know why people still pay for it as well. As soon as they brought back ads for paid tiers, I went back into the boat and never looked back. Shame itās only gotten worse.

Same. People need to start reacting to that stuff and actually unsubscribe. If you go along with it complacently, companies are only going to double down.

I'd plan to download even more torrents of netflix series, but it's not like they've got anything worth watching anyway.
KingThrillgore@lemmy.ml · 4 pts · 90d
They're one step away from dictating the content to be tailored to ads. Which is the natural end of running ads on your fucking service.
Apple TV+ remains the only streaming service I continue to pay for.
UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 90d
Let me know when they find a way to get ads into the torrented copies of their shows.
