Well, I quickly read through that list and I'll say this: considering the insane amount of stuff that gets silently filtered out, whoever views Lemmy through that thing must think it's pretty quiet š
And thatās a large part of the issue. The frontend doesnāt actually disclose this blocklist at all. In fact, it actively takes steps to obfuscate things and make it appear as if the blocklist doesnāt exist at all.
For example, attempting to view a blocked instance shows a generic network error, rather than a āthis instance is being blocked by your frontendā error. And blocked users arenāt simply flagged and/or collapsed. Theyāre entirely hidden, as if they donāt exist at all. So someone using this as their primary frontend wouldnāt even know that theyāre missing entire posts and/or comment chains, because anything from the blocked users is simply gone.
Additionally, the blocklist is downloaded (in plaintext, over http) when the frontend is booted, so itās not a file that gets updated with the git version updates. Meaning the dev can silently update it even if users havenāt pulled new versions. Simply rebooting your frontend would be enough to pull an updated blocklist. This gives the dev an extreme amount of censorship power, because they can effectively change usersā configs without any action on the usersā part.
It was only originally discovered because the admin for db0 used the frontend. And notably, db0 is on the block list. They were previously using an old version of the frontend that didnāt include the hidden blocklist yet. They updated their Lemmy stack a little while ago, and suddenly their entire frontend was broken (the entire feed was completely empty) and showing a generic version incompatibility error.
After lots of troubleshooting, the db0 admin eventually discovered that the frontend was downloading a hidden blocklist and automatically blocking the instance that it was running on. Because when they updated their stack, the new version of Tesseract included the secret blocklist. So it downloaded the blocklist when it booted up, found that db0 was on the list, and silently hid every single post because they were all from a blocked instance. This resulted in a completely empty feed.
Considering the amount of effort put into the blocklist by the Tesseract dev to keep it hidden, you would think they would have included an exception if it was running on a blocked instance to help keep it hidden.
Yup, and this is just speculation, but I guess itās supposed to be an anti-spam thing, but it targets a lot of people/communities/instances that post actually good content
Yeah, I'm pretty unabashedly anti-capitalist, so I'm not surprised I ruffled some feathers. I was just pointing out that the idea that this was just a spam filter taken too far doesn't really hold up.
but I guess itās supposed to be an anti-spam thing
Oh my God, I swear some people will just never get it.
No dude, this isn't just someone trying to block spam, this is ideologically targeted to silently remove specific viewpoints from people who use the stylesheet without disclosing that they're doing that.
This obviously has nothing to do with spam. Keep giving people like this the benefit of the doubt, and see where it leads us.
Edit: I just saw your pfp... Were you aware that this blocked the entirety of Blahaj? The de facto trans instance?
I donāt think itās anti-spam. It looks pretty much like a personal blocklist, it blocks a lot of users that have political views that the tess dev doesnāt agree with. It blocks political keywords often used by certain ideologies that I guess the dev doesnāt agree with, for example, no ones blocking āneoliberalā as a keyword because of spam.
This looks entirely like a personal blocklist which is completely fine, but secretly adding it to the frontend is v dubiousā¦
Itās a shame I think the dev is a good person from the convos Iāve had with them, but this crosses a bit of a lineā¦
I just want Lemmy to have a better, more wholesome, and welcoming experience for new users, as such I've decided to block the things I think we can all agree are bad:
Any idea what the regexis mean? I landed there which is funny because that means my .world, dbzer0, ml, mbin, piefed, and hexbear accounts would all likely get pegged under the same name, lol.
It's a badge of honour. Looks like the cunt hates anything that isn't a basement dweller in their mother's house or their own mother's cunt.
Also someone who blocks literally anything that discusses rights for people and hides behind 'toxicity' have so much to hide. Maybe someone should check their hard drive.
"^hierophante",

"^hitstun$",
"^holyclergy$",
"^HomeInvasion$",
Oh, so that's why I can't find my own posts in Tesseract. I'm surprised they didn't block my whole community.
Yeah you'd be overthinking it since the dev wasn't doing much themselves. The blacklist was not put together coherently and appears to be mostly built by emotion, especially in light of the dev's "I'm not sorry at all" response.
The dev is a part of a corporate structure they formed where they're named CFO. They are, in their mind, Fediverse C-suite, and they act accordingly.
I think it's more like saying "it is good to defend ourselves against people who seek to kill us for our innate characteristics" is crossing the line. Or that colonialism should not be allowed
Never trust anyone who screams about how hard theyāre leaving and immediately come back for more. Itās narcissist behavior, just like believing he should get to silently block leftist and trans instances without explanation. And I donāt consider that little footnote in his self centered rant about how right he is to be anything resembling a justification.
What a self-important moron. "I must be the arbiter of what is good and proper and what goes too far!someonehas to!" yeah they call it curating your own fucking block list you fuckwit, doesn't mean you should be silently "curating" anyone else's. "But think of the poor normies who are lazy!" then they can go back to reddit. Lemmy will grow, and has been growing, just fine without your "help". "If you don't like it, don't use it!" Aha, finally, something I think the entire fediverse (save for his own little fiefdom) will be likely to agree on.
That entire post is indicative of someone too stupid to read the room and too stubborn to leave it.
I also enjoy that he basically says he's working on blocking all the dregs of society who cannot exist anywhere else online, as if to imply bans from platforms like reddit are typically just, and he also conveniently ignores that he likely was banned from Reddit in the first place, unless he left because he didn't like the same shitty culture that leads to banning people with non-fascist viewpoints.
He's obsessed with this idea of bringing "normal" people here and shielding them from anyone with an opinion about anything that fucking matters. Fuck that. I don't want the same people who have no issues with ice or trump in this space, nor do I want their supporters here. Let those assholes stay on reddit. He's acting like he's politically neutral in this way but from what I can tell that's definitely not the case just due to the vast majority of users here being on the left, if nothing else.
He's literally sought to neuter what is actually good about the fediverse. By silencing the people who are not okay with the world as it is...
And you know he gets a smug look on his face every time he adds a "toxic" item to his little blocklist. What a douchebag.
Not only that but he goes out of his way to imply you'll be dragged into the troll pits if you disable the filter. Considering who's on that block list, his skin must be tissue-thin.
Exactly what I meant by "too stubborn to leave it". He clearly cannot have his fee-fees hurt or his positions challenged in any way at any time; and I would gently suggest that such a person should not be participating in social media in general, let alone a contentious corner of it like Lemmy. The fact he persists in trying to beat it into something palatable for the most bland of palates, while thoroughly Sisyphean, is genuinely funny -- it's that he feels the need to sneakily impose this on others, though, that takes it from funny and dumb to infuriating, fractally stupid, and malicious behavior.
To disable them (referred to as enabling Toxic Mode in the settings), itās as simple as:
Settings -> Advanced -> Click the "I feel like some content is missing. What's up?" text at the bottom -> Enable Toxic Mode
I didnāt want to add that option, but I conceded nonetheless, and itās been available the whole fucking time. Iāll admit the fine print buried at the bottom of the advanced settings isnāt the most upfront place to put it, but it is there, and thereās nothing stopping you from turning it on.¹
¹ Admins who deploy Tesseract can opt to disable the availability of toxic mode, but it is available by default.
It even flat out says why that exists:
Tesseract attempts to filter out as much baseline toxicity as possible in order to make the default experience welcoming and round off some of the Fediverseās rougher edges. This is particularly important for attracting and retaining new users and for facilitating long-term growth of the platform. If you absolutely must, you can enable āToxic
When non-toxic becomes toxic. I don't object to the idea These include very vanilla users, left, right, center. What is this person's criteria for "toxic?" but yumpin yimminy the wording...
It's bullshit, I know. The block list even included my tiny 115 subscriber community for independent canadian news. He must have had to dig to find it and then find something wrong with it.
Another one of those "I know better than you it's for your own good" types.
He's right though, no one should use tesseract. Or anything else he has made or will make. Seems too short sighted to see how he has betrayed the trust of his users.
Frontend with a pissy admin. Got it. I don't really understand why so many people are blacklisted by them, which is what kinda reminded my of the whole r/conservative thing - you'd get banned for posting (even in other subs) in a way that revealed you weren't in fact a neonazi. So, getting banned from r/conservative kinda became a rite of passage on a new account lol.
delighted to see that a username I used to go by on a couple instances has a regex entry, somewhat disappointed this username isn't in there. Clearly I need to step up my game on this account.
Yeah, they used a pattern to allow my username to be optionally followed by numbers and yet I've never had an account like that. Which gives me a weird ai hallucination vibe actually.
Mine's on there as a regex, but encapsulated with string beginning and ending delimiters for some unfathomable reason. So I have presumably defeated this Super Sophisticated Blocking Technology entirely unintentionally by appending a penguin and a knife to my display name. See, I knew I did that for a legitimate reason.
making a list of undesirables to disenfranchise is a rather alarmingly faschy thing to do >.>; just sayin'...
i've been mulling it over and it creeps me out more and more. all too easily, a misplaced sense of self-importance in a principal administrative figure can spoil like milk forgotten in a hot car. I've seen this sort of thing happen PERSONALLY.
Someone I had known became the big fish in their small pond. They began systematically ejecting and excommunicating anyone who didn't agree with them. Eventually the only people left in their circle were exclusively yes-men who did not DARE to challenge or question anything--lest they were to dispose of said yes-men too. Yes-men incentivized to say 'yes' to, and thereby condone, and then encourage, increasingly outrageous and deranged impulses.
The first domino has fallen over and struck the second, which is now tilting past any point of equilibrium. For a while longer, everything will be fine; the people who ingratiate themselves will be selectively immune from the same criticisms that get others blanket-'disappeared'... so hey, one might enjoy using that frontend for now...
...but I implore mindfulness and wariness. Very seldom do I see someone cross the first line without crossing the rest of them eventually. It's not impossible, but it's far from common. Anyone still using that frontend, if they start seeing "a certain kind of person" being bolstered exceptionally at the expense of everyone else, it's time to bail.
While it's not my place to dictate what the tesseract dev does, I do recall reading that they specifically were feeling dissatisfied with the work, and disappointed by the way their users were acting, and had been considering abandoning the project. While I can't speak for this developer, obviously, I can't help but imagine myself in their position... and on that basis I for one believe I would have sooner relinquished the project and walked away entirely rather than see myself turn it into a tool of targeted harassment and marginalization With A Cheerful Coat Of Paint.
.......
it's just setting off my alarm bells real bad. This looks too much like other abusive shit i've been through over the decades.
but eh. maybe i'm just paranoid... grain of salt, mileage may vary, et cetera.
I'm not on the list, I feel deeply offended, I need to work more actively to improve this site.
Why would anyone want to use software under those conditions? You have to be a real loser to not be able to interact with all those people and try to prevent others from doing so as well.
I like how this dev used regex to match any similar names, not just the specific name they're trying to block. People out there catching strays, getting blocked when they've done nothing but have a similar name to someome this dev doesn't like.
"^Darkassassin([0-9]+)?$",
Did they block me? Someone else, but I'm similar?
I've never used another number with this name, just the full 'Darkasassin07'
Screw anyone called 'Darkasassin' I guess š¤·š»
This has to be just for the creators use right? Like accidentally committed, or a project where they had no intention of others actually using it? Any other explanation is insane.
Documenting your censorship, bias, and authoritarianism doesnāt really make it any better.
Basically you try to preemptively punish people who donāt go along with the echo chamber, putting a target on their back telling people to just block and ban them.
Thatās incredibly unfair and childish. It encourages dog-piling and unfair bans.
It would be hilarious if the dev cant even see these posts because they are all made by blocked users and such. Think they use their own frontend that way?

Wren@lemmy.today · 18 pts · 27d
Not only that but he goes out of his way to imply you'll be dragged into the troll pits if you disable the filter. Considering who's on that block list, his skin must be tissue-thin.
volore@scribe.disroot.org · 10 pts · 27d
Exactly what I meant by "too stubborn to leave it". He clearly cannot have his fee-fees hurt or his positions challenged in any way at any time; and I would gently suggest that such a person should not be participating in social media in general, let alone a contentious corner of it like Lemmy. The fact he persists in trying to beat it into something palatable for the most bland of palates, while thoroughly Sisyphean, is genuinely funny -- it's that he feels the need to sneakily impose this on others, though, that takes it from funny and dumb to infuriating, fractally stupid, and malicious behavior.
Maeve@kbin.earth · 22 pts · 27d
When non-toxic becomes toxic.
I don't object to the ideaThese include very vanilla users, left, right, center. What is this person's criteria for "toxic?" but yumpin yimminy the wording...Wren@lemmy.today · 22 pts · 27d
It's bullshit, I know. The block list even included my tiny 115 subscriber community for independent canadian news. He must have had to dig to find it and then find something wrong with it.

Frontend with a pissy admin. Got it. I don't really understand why so many people are blacklisted by them, which is what kinda reminded my of the whole r/conservative thing - you'd get banned for posting (even in other subs) in a way that revealed you weren't in fact a neonazi. So, getting banned from r/conservative kinda became a rite of passage on a new account lol.

making a list of undesirables to disenfranchise is a rather alarmingly faschy thing to do >.>; just sayin'...
i've been mulling it over and it creeps me out more and more. all too easily, a misplaced sense of self-importance in a principal administrative figure can spoil like milk forgotten in a hot car.

Despite this I'm sure someone will arrive shortly to describe all the times I didn't document or communicate clearly enough.
GoatSynagogue@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 27d
Documenting your censorship, bias, and authoritarianism doesnāt really make it any better.
Basically you try to preemptively punish people who donāt go along with the echo chamber, putting a target on their back telling people to just block and ban them.
Thatās incredibly unfair and childish. It encourages dog-piling and unfair bans.
chisel@piefed.social · -1 pts · 27d
That's quite a leap from banning Nazi symbolism in usernames to an authoritarian regime.
GoatSynagogue@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 27d
