It's one banana Mamdani, what could it cost, $10?

jaybone@lemmy.zip · 25 pts · 33d

Banana Mamdani sounds like a tropical drink. 🍹🍸

RidgeDweller@sh.itjust.works · 16 pts · 33d

Nah, $7. It's 30% off!

Blade9732@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 33d

There's always money in the banana stand. Now, where's my attorney?

Jiral@lemmy.world · 110 pts · 33d (27 replies)

Do Americans not know how fruits work or is it just the Epstein class that doesn't?

ParlimentOfDoom@piefed.zip · 113 pts · 33d (5 replies)

It's the rich fucks who have never done their own shopping that didn't understand how shit works.

Like how the pedo in chief thinks you need an id to buy groceries (he's said this multiple times while trying to push for draconian voter id laws)

fartographer@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 33d (2 replies)

It's entirely possible that they know what bananas look like unpeeled, and they know what the inside of a banana looks like on a plate, but they've never seen for themselves how bananas move from one phase to the other.

LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 33d (1 reply)

Oh fuck I never considered that. That can't be true, bananas are everywhere in movies and shit right?

Nouvellalia@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 33d

They are so far removed from a concrete reality that they've never seen a banana ripen. To the wealthy, all green bananas are bad and gross. The yellow bananas are good, and those are the ones people bring you when you pay them money for a banana, or the ones you see in your wealthy spaces.

For example, a wealthy person who has a fruit bowl on the counter will also have someone who changes the fruit out every day for fruit that is perfectly ripe that day. They may not even know fruit ages until they are well into adulthood and find out accidentally.

Is it about using checks? Does he think people still write checks?

neukenindekeuken@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 32d

No, if you're being generous, you might explain it as him thinking the loyalty cards people scan are I'd cards.

glimse@lemmy.world · 30 pts · 33d (3 replies)

Yeah man, Americans only know hamburgers and corn. Everyone carries a gun and no one can read so fruit is a mystery. You definitely have the right idea about this place.

Stuff like this makes me feel good because it shows that we're not the only country where people are passively brainwashed by the media lol

HeyJoe@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 33d

Hey hey hey... you forgot pizza.

BreakerSwitch@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 33d

Corn. You mean that thing you make gas out of? What's it got to do with groceries? /s

Jiral@lemmy.world · -2 pts · 33d

Come on, relax. The first part of the comment was rhetoric. It is telling that you comment as if it was meant seriously.

FuglyDuck@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 33d

Yes. We know. The idiot that said the thing probably knows too.

It’s a sound bite to make Mamdani seem like he’s pushing bad food. That’s it.

yakko@feddit.uk · 11 pts · 33d (6 replies)

You can't really judge a country that large by its top 1% weirdest motherfuckers

lemmy_get_my_coat@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 33d (2 replies)

Yeah but then can that 1% please shut the fuck up and fuck off?

moncharleskey@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 33d

Not with social media being owned by the billionaires.

HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 33d

BlindPenguin@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 32d

Well, the voting behaviour didn't really help with that...

Asfalttikyntaja@sopuli.xyz · 1 pts · 33d (1 reply)

Would that 1% stop voting pedos and idiots in charge?

AVincentInSpace@pawb.social · 1 pts · 22d

That's going to be hard as long as they keep voting for each other.

BurgerBaron@quokk.au · 2 pts · 32d

I'm not sure if there's been a good enough study on general "food literacy" to really know but I'd love to see one. Anecdotal so this is fairly worthless info: When I was a teen working at a pizza shop the amount of new hires that rolled through over the years that couldn't recognize some/many of the toppings on sight was alarming to me. I don't know how widespread that scenario is. I figure, at least some kids grow up completely ignorant of what the raw ingredients look like for any food they eat.

Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works · -5 pts · 33d (6 replies)

You seem to be under the false impression that most Americans have ever seen a fruit or vegetable.

lugal@sopuli.xyz · 8 pts · 33d (2 replies)

I'm not an American myself but I've heard of food deserts aka areas where fresh food isn't available. This context is important because without it, your comment might read as if it's their fault

vala@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 33d (1 reply)

American here. Did desserts are very real things.

daychilde@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 33d

Did desserts

Yes. Whatever it was, desserts did.

AVincentInSpace@pawb.social · 1 pts · 22d

You seem to be under the false impression that you know literally anything about America.

ayyy@sh.itjust.works · 0 pts · 33d

I’m impressed that you managed to put a whole sentence together all by yourself! You should be very proud! Did you put your own socks on today too? Wow!

RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 33d

Fuck. Off.

GardenGeek@europe.pub · 57 pts · 33d (8 replies)

If you eat a banana in Europe or the U.S., there’s a 99% chance it was harvested just as green as the one in the picture.

Today, bananas are harvested unripe in their countries of origin because they’re much easier to transport that way, and they’re then fumigated with ethylene in large ripening facilities at their destination to allow them to ripen further. This way, the logistics process is less stressful during transport, and the customer gets a perfectly ripe banana at the store... though I don’t understand why they used bananas for the photo that were taken out of the ripening house too early.

protist@retrofed.com · 28 pts · 33d (2 replies)

In the US, bananas often hit the store shelves this color. They will ripen quickly over the following 3-4 days. You can decide to buy the ones that have ripened on the shelves or buy greener ones and let them ripen at home. Unripe bananas have several culinary uses, so it's good to have this option

cenzorrll@piefed.ca · 9 pts · 33d

I much prefer to have a range of ripeness when buying bananas, otherwise you need to wait 4 days for them to ripen and now you have 24 hours to eat 8 bananas.

GardenGeek@europe.pub · 1 pts · 32d

I didn't know that. In Europe they're often somewhat greenish when the shelve is freshly stocked but I think I never found such green ones pictured here... that's what made me wonder.

portnull@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 9 pts · 33d (2 replies)

Not far from where we used to live in the UK there was a road sign directing you to the "Banana depot"

This be one of the places you speak of

jaybone@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 33d (1 reply)

Did it always have a nice sweet smell in the area?

I used to live close to a chocolate factory. Sometimes it smelled ok and a lot of people commented they like it. To me most of the time it smelt like burnt chocolate, which was kind of sickening.

Wondering if ripening possibly rotting bananas in large quantities would have a similar effect.

portnull@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 33d

Not a smell at all. I never got really close, but nothing wafted across the lands

Geobloke@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 33d

I dunno, we buy green bananas all the time as different people in the house have different banana ripeness preferences. We also eat heaps and buying them green means less trips to the shops

RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 33d

..........no one on Planet Earth doesn't know this.

gedaliyah@lemmy.world · 52 pts · 33d (2 replies)

Ironically, there's a phrase for someone who's so old and out of touch that they might as well be on death's doorstep:

"Don't buy green bananas."

(In the South it's often used in a self deprecating way: "let's just say I don't buy green bananas.")

jaybone@lemmy.zip · 9 pts · 33d (1 reply)

Ain’t no one got time for that shit.

I’m starting in on the first banana on the way home from the store. Gotta be quick with those fuckers. Otherwise it’s a day later and you’re like “welp, gotta make bread I guess.” Eyes tearing up. It’s like a funeral for those little bitches.

You’re tempted to switch these with a fresh one from the store if you have any kids in the house, like you did when the goldfish died. I can’t tell a kid the banana went to go live on a farm upstate.

angband@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 33d

Dude, break off a couple yellows, grab some greens for later.

RBWells@lemmy.world · 39 pts · 33d (4 replies)

I thought this was satire but looked up mr. macintosh and it's real. Dude, are you on death's door? No time to wait for the bananas to get ripe?

To be fair - If they are platanos - I wouldn't buy such green plantains because those fuckers are green, green, green for weeks then yellow but not ready and I forget about them and miss the one day they are ripe.

VitoRobles@lemmy.today · 12 pts · 33d

My first rule is if they're conservative, take it with a grain of salt.

If they're a white conservative, less of that.

If they're a old white conservative, of fuck off. No opinion of theirs is valid.

ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one · 5 pts · 33d

To be fair - If they are platanos - I wouldn’t buy such green plantains because those fuckers are green, green, green for weeks then yellow but not ready and I forget about them and miss the one day they are ripe.

You just described avocados except on a longer time scale. Avocados are a like "Sike! I was ripe at 12:56 pm and it is now 12:59 pm. I now no longer ripe."

diablomnky@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 33d (1 reply)

Depends on what you're making with them, but for maduros I agree. Gotta get them when they're spotted brown.

RBWells@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 32d

Yes, I like them in the Cuban style, almost overripe, fried in butter, then a little salt. So delicious. Luckily the stores around here do put out both green and ripe platanos.

switcheroo@lemmy.world · 31 pts · 32d (3 replies)

That shithead has never once been in a grocery store or had to buy his own food. Shows how out of touch he is. Fuck off with that shit.

Personally I get the green nanners since they'll last longer.

OldChicoAle@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 32d (2 replies)

Smart people that aren't fucking idiots also get green ones. Especially in this economy

thespcicifcocean@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 32d

Its a banana, how much could it cost? Ten dollars?

cantstopthesignal@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 32d

Depends. When bananas get too cold they can stay green and never ripen. Was a problem a few months ago because grocery stores should have been throwing them in the trash but sold these bad bananas anyway.

kryptonianCodeMonkey@lemmy.world · 30 pts · 33d

Tell me you're too rich to do your own grocery shopping/cooking without telling me.

KindnessIsPunk@lemmy.ca · 30 pts · 33d (3 replies)

They say suspiciously green banana in the same way they say Barack Hussein Obama.

I really hope there is a limit to how much Fox New's daily message of "suspect and hate anything that looks like progress"

Hopefully the concrete benefits of cheaper groceries will sway people.

daychilde@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 33d

I really hope there is a limit to how much Fox New’s

spoiler alert: there isn't

renrenPDX@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 32d (1 reply)

I’ve got three suspiciously green bunches of bananas at home because that’s all they had. It just means I’ve got a week before they’re anywhere close to being edible.

Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 32d

Costco bananas are usually green when you buy then, and then you have like 2 days to eat them after they ripen until they turn brown.

BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 26 pts · 32d (1 reply)

They weren't even bananas, they were plantains. He calls them by name in the video.

ryannathans@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 32d

Some real small plantains

marcos@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 33d

AFAIK you are still right. But my knowledge may just be outdated.

LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 33d

I'm guessing 14 cents a banana?

Return_of_Chippy@lemmy.world · 19 pts · 33d (1 reply)

Its just because he's part of big apple has nothing to do with the politician or bananas. He's just trying to divert people from eating non apple fruits.

I don't want them Sam I am

pupbiru@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 33d

Iusedtobeanalien@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 33d (6 replies)

saw a vid of an american woman in an english supermarket and she commented how green the bananas were which amused me you buy five or eight bananas to last the whole week right

P1k1e@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 33d (5 replies)

OryxAndCake@slrpnk.net · 3 pts · 33d (4 replies)

Because you can only buy yellow bananas, or?

P1k1e@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 32d (2 replies)

Yes, only yellow. I don't think I've ever made full use of a bunch

OryxAndCake@slrpnk.net · 3 pts · 32d

Peel and chop the bananas into smallish chunks and then freeze them. And you can blend the frozen bananas with some cocoa powder for really delicious chocolate nice cream.

WoodScientist@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 32d

Banana bread is the secret. Even extremely brown bananas make great bread!

Buddahriffic@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 32d

I've had bananas that seem to go directly from green to brown. Not often but it was pretty annoying.

Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works · 11 pts · 32d (1 reply)

Bananas that green are the best possible buy for longevity. Then you grab one or two singles that are yellow to go with them.

Tiger666@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 32d

The yellow ones will make the green ones yellow faster as long as you keep them together.

WolvenSpectre@lemmy.ca · 10 pts · 33d (4 replies)

I keep seeing "green banana" posts but I saw the video this is from and those are plantains

LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 33d (2 replies)

Are they? The picture looks like bananas to me. Where I've lived in the states though plantains are usually less rounded and longer. They probably vary just the same and I'm not use to seeing it

WolvenSpectre@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 27d

Let me rephrase that... They say they are plantains in the video.

Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 32d

I can tell because regular bananas have a long straight crown, plantains have a short crown with a prominent ridge at the front.

CocaineShrimp@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 33d

Even better lol

webghost0101@sopuli.xyz · 10 pts · 33d

Yall fruits don’t continue to ripen at home?

We look for the green bananas because we need them to not spoil to fast.

LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net · 9 pts · 33d (2 replies)

I mean these are kinda excessively green. They really shouldn't be harvested this early but then again transporting them across the world to NYC requires a very early harvest to avoid spoilage.

Once you taste a banana that was harvested when it was ripe you'll never want another supermarket banana again.

Soggy@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 33d

Unfortunately I live almost 3000 miles away from where bananas grow so I'm not having a "harvested ripe" banana any time soon.

emergencyfood@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 33d

There are many varieties of banana. Some are this green even when they are ripe. But I do not know if they are available in the US.

David M McIntosh: yessssss when my personal shopper drives directly to the market to get food, then delivers them to my butler, who hands them off to my complement of personal chefs. I assure you therey're nothing but the finest shade of yellow.

Kazumara@discuss.tchncs.de · 3 pts · 33d (3 replies)

I know they ripen much more after etc.

But I was wondering do you guys frequently buy them this green still? The ones on offer around me are way more yellow already.

Maybe it's a difference in how supermarkets in the USA vs Switzerland do logistics or something, that's why I'm asking.

WolfLink@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 33d

It varies. The bananas in the picture are particularly green though.

Nouvellalia@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 33d

I buy for my family of four for the week. I have to buy them in a gradient from just-ripe yellow, to green as can be. Every time I hit the store I buy some that are this green.

boonhet@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 32d

Estonian here, they usually show up moderately green in the store, oftentimes they'll still have the yellows from the last batch out when they bring in the fresh green ones. I prefer them a little green, I don't actually like yellow.

Just to add a data point, I don't know how green they come in the US

Also the ones on the photo are apparently plantains, which are much greener than cavendish bananas. Our regular bananas are never THIS green.

DupaCycki@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 33d

Now, the question is: does mr McIntosh know how apples work?

Jankatarch@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 33d (2 replies)

Is his last name "macintosh??"

idiomaddict@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 33d

The apple was named after a different Macintosh, and the computer after the apple, but it’s not a hugely uncommon name.

jaybone@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 33d

A different spelling. But they are both pretty common spellings of a pretty common name. Are you confused by this?

Busyvar@jlai.lu · 3 pts · 31d

We never met mr. Mcintosh, i'm mr. Cavendish.

ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net · 2 pts · 33d

Is David M. McIntosh a typical customer of the government run grocery stores? Is it normal for wealthy people to travel from another state to shop there?
