I have to disagree with you here, you can't group police unions described in my last comment to, say, coal miner unions which got the miners and their families paid in US dollars, got them out of broken down and expensive company housing, raised their wages to living levels, and generally raised generations of entire regions out of poverty before the mines were automated or shut down.
ETA: Also, other types of unions don't terrorize civilians when they don't vet their way, other types of unions hurt the BOSSES and capitalists and are generally integrated into the community, not trying to lord over it.
There definitely is management. What about people like NHS staff? Nurses, porters, doctors working in public health, are they also disqualified from union activity?
Yes. All public sector unions. There isn't a true counter party in the public sector, the union is bargaining against the people. This leads to a perverse incentive where "management" essentially agrees to anything as there's no benefit to disagree.
The management is government/parliament. Public sector jobs are much harder to negotiate anything because it tends to come with hard rules for every minute detail.
If what your saying about no true counter party was to be true, we would see well paid NHS staff. Where as in the UK its been recorded that nurses are using food banks. A similar story for those working in finance, leaving university with an economics degree, people can enter the private sector which pays very well or go public like my ex partner had which pays much less.

Yeah he got that wrong, but I think this still highlights the dynamic at play. Regan pushed the horrible cultural narrative around welfare, but then he was followed by Clinton saying he was going to “end welfare as we know it.” Softer language than Regan, but pushing in the same policy direction, enabled by Regan’s earlier propaganda, and in the act of making it bipartisan, he normalized it as a position that we’ve been stuck with ever since.
I may have fumbled that reference, but Bill Clinton managed to make a bipartisan effort to reduce welfare work.
JFC, Bill Clinton signed the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act because he wanted to look tough on crime, but Trump is the big bad boogeyman that came out of nowhere.
Cut me some fucking slack and stop looking at Democrats through rose-tinted glasses, for Christ's sake.
No, it’s a “ratchet effect” argument. Dems are opposed to fascism in principle, but have shown no interest in stopping the root causes that lead to it.
Is it because instead of trying to improve the lives of people in a meaningful way. They think giving everyone a puppy will be the solution?
While not once realising that 350 million puppies is going to require some serious imports, quarantines, vacinations, construction of holding facilities (i guess they could repurpose their concentration camps), employees to oversee the puppies while in quarantine, vets to administer vacines. Janitors and cleaners to maintain the premises.
So... instead of just giving everyone universal healthcare. They'll spend twice as much on puppies. That sure does sound like the US in a nutshell
I totally get the point. But to be fair, the US has such a high GDP that it could afford all of this. But, it would require taxing the wealthy a bit more.
Or they could have just sat home and not blow up their entire arsenal in Iran. While selling those weapons to EU that is buying them to donate to Ukraine.
That alone would have been enough. Without even increasing taxes on anything
I never said it was a red v blue thing. Just that neither will give it to you. One will try to give you something else because the want you to think you might get it. While the other will just tell you up front to get lost
Forever? How dare you! We just need diarrhea for this one most important election of our lifetimes. I refuse to acknowledge anything beyond a single iteration.
Puppy is right, not really a solution, good PR, and not diarrhea forever. And in the comments, you can even begin to guess who would be claiming that they are not a real solution so you should vote against free puppies and vote for diarrhea forever to shake up the system.
You know, so they offer something better next time even though next time everyone's toilet and sewer system is going to be backed up and in need of dire repair by then as well because and also, everyone is suffering from diarrhea forever now so much that everyone would just be happy to not be suffering from diarrhea forever now, forget about the free puppies.
Regrettably this is sold as "The government steals your money to buy immigrants puppies" vs "Your freedom to choose which self-regulating corporation's food you buy--free market in action!"
And more regrettably people believe it against all evidence.
Corey A. DeAngelis is an American advocate for school choice.
DeAngelis was an adjunct scholar at the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank. He worked for the American Federation for Children, a conservative education nonprofit group founded by Betsy DeVos, from 2021 to 2024.
He joined the board of directors of the Liberty Justice Center in 2022. He has appeared on Fox News multiple times to as a commentator on education policy.
DeAngelis has described school choice as "a winner for Trump". He contributed to the Project 2025 document, in the section discussing education and the dissolution of the U.S. Department of Education.
In 2024, he released the book The Parent Revolution.
This guy's literally done nothing his entire life besides get paid by right-wing think tanks to undercut public schools
It's a classic conservative propaganda technique to name their evil plans the opposite of what they actually mean. If it contains the word "freedom" it's about tyranny. If it says "protect" it means persecution, and if it says "children" just mentally append "fuck" in front of it.
We need to stop saying right vs left framing. It’s the wealthy class propaganda technique. Poor people that are “conservative” are in most cases just tricked by these parasitic ghouls that spend money to lie to people to work against their own self interests.
They live in a controlled information environment; much like the Russian people who think Ukraine is full to the brim with Nazis.
They have been force fed hate and bigotry for decades at this point. They are not blameless, but also they don't deserve all the hate that is projected at them.
As pointed out, the education system is gutted, thus they are not curious and checking their biases; it is normalized for them to be hateful toward "others"; their whole world is small and full of fear.
I pity them their small pathetic lives, and dislike them for their shitty views. The only thing I hate is that the stupid bigotry seems to be spreading around the world.
I mean, I agree with you on all this, but I have a very hard time seeing how this is relevant to my comment. The topic was conservative propaganda techniques, not hating conservative voters. I despise them, but hate is too strong a word for me to feel for any person.
Because of all this competition we have in the market! With many schools near your home, they compete for your conforming child's business. What with the labor shortage, we have all these employers with that good health insurance competing for our time. And of course, small farmers are doing great and supply our many competing food markets.
Conservatives hate teachers because teachers don’t need to work when kids aren’t in school for the summer. That’s the only complaint I’ve ever truly heard from them. Meanwhile, those same teachers are up stupid early, on time every fucking day, dealing with over-filled classes of every type of child, and then doing even more labour in the evenings as they aren’t officially given much of any time to create plans or mark work.
There's plenty more that they complain about with teachers. They complain that they are ineffective, promote progressive ideals, target their children's shitty behavior, aren't held accountable, and the whole "those who can't do, teach" bullshit.
I used to be a teacher. I've seen it all, heard it all.
Since COVID some Conservative people I know have become like those animals that can't comprehend things that didn't happen right in front of them.
My kid is a teacher (in Canada so they are paid really well). But its solely on them to develop all the lessons and gather everything needed. They are working to do this after hours and weekends.
In the USA we're indoctrinated in schools. Faje history and other b.s.
Im not maga or republican but I also cant side with more bullshit from schools that dont actually teach.
Glad you guys up north get it. Teachers matter even if they are doing the work of multiple people. At least you get paid.
You can tell Trump has dementia: in the retirement home my grandpa was in at the end of his life, they also labeled the different rooms for when the residents got confused and lost.
I can’t think of anything dumber than labeling intelligence as evil….
Voting a convicted felon sex offender pedophile serial liar insurrectionist gassy orange fatman with a weird yellow comb-over and a bad case of fronto-temporal dementia as president?
There's a reason that authoritarian revolutions typically have a "kill all the eggheads" phase. That type of arrogance isn't compatible with someone saying, "Hey guys, I've studied this my whole life and what you're saying is incorrect.". Fragile egos can't deal with the idea that they might be wrong about something, so they just hulk smash anything that might cause cognitive dissonance and move on.
he seems to be confusing it with catholic priests? they shuffle them around for sure, and also any evangelical pastors too. "terrible teachers" usually get booted from the industry quite quickly.
Are people really upset at... bad teachers? with everything else going on?? Like I also had a few bad teachers as a kid, but I also had a future with a biosphere that can sustain life. Maybe we should focus on the actually existential one here.
Teacher's Unions aren't perfect and there have been some valid complaints about them, but that's basically every union. Honestly, my biggest complaint is that teachers have unions and they're still not paid enough.
But at any rate, this is typical conservative rhetoric. "We've found (or invented) one thing we can complain about, so rather than having a rational, calm discussion about the state of things and how we can improve that thing, we want to cause the most drama, scare everybody the most, and tear everything down, while promising to replace it with something better, a promise that we'll never, ever, in a million years, deliver on."
they arnt, even in blue areas while thier wages are much higher, the hcol kinda negates it, unless you somehow can make it to 10+years as a teacher you will get close to 100k, usually teachers often supported by thier SOs most of the time.
it should be 100k from the start. they are dealing with admins with red tape bratty children, unruly parents, children that arnt willing to learn,,,etc.
Once upon a time, the USA had a strong middle class. Billionaires got taxed heavily, and our public schools were the envy of the world. Well funded and produced a lot of great students.
But educated people are difficult to control and even harder to dupe. The GOP realized that if they can gut public education, the masses will become malleable again. Meanwhile, the children of the rich can continue to go to expensive private institutions for their own education. So the rich stay educated, and the poor's go in the gutter.
It should also be noted that they must be malleable beneath the threshold of the GOPs competence. So to effectively manipulate, the GOP needs a population more ignorant than the DNC does. The left can afford smarter ppl because the leadership itself is more competent, it ain't like education isn't being gutted in blue states as well
Also cutting education now has no effect for about 25 years or so(in their view. Its approximately right but not completely true...) Their short term brainrot is so bad they would abolish education entirely in a heart beat and coast on those miniscule savings for a few decades until the world rips itself apart...
Also, my pet conspiracy is they all know the world is going to devolve into chaos due to global heating and climate destabilization anyways so why should they care about education when its not going to produce anything worthwhile when the chaos hits... from what I'm seeing 2040 is where things get dicey and most things have inflected negative. 2050 is where things break down genuinely. Too many bad things happen at once...
They are capturing and selling horses off to slaughter, at a severe loss. They spend up to $3,000 to capture wild horses then sell middlemen for $25. Those dudes then sell the houses abroad to slaughter plants for $750.
There’s absolutely no fucking reason to do this. They tried to buy gas chambers for to kill the horses faster.
EDIT: Sorry, I just realize my comment is not related to work reform. I just wanted to point out how much more evil and cruel these people are. They are vile.
"All unions are bad except my union" is the much more consistent application of inherently hypocritical conservative values, compared to what they can say to a broad audience through right wing media. Hilarious.
I know this is by far the least objectionable thing in that picture, but does anyone find it weird to fly four identical flags right up next to each other like that? Just somehow feels tacky to my mind, like they're so bunched up that not any one individual one of them is able to actually function as a flag. Maybe just me idk
It's even weirder when the president comes out and fondles one. It's even weirder to read some MAGA say that they love him more because he fondles the flag, and no other president ever did that (yeah, I've heard people say that).
i knew he seemed familiar, he was reported 1-2 years ago, he went back in the closet. it does look he attracts men more than women. seems alot of gay white pornstars are trumpers as of late.(most of them disappeared from the industry after being outed as a magat, or cancelled, or pivoted)
They’ve done the decades of work to turn people against unions, convincing MAGAts that unions are proto-communist organizations that extort unfair wages though dishonest practices while sitting around not working. They have people looking over at them saying “how come you get paid so much?” Instead of “I should get paid that much too.”
I already support unions (in one) and adore teachers because I pretty much worship at the church of education. They have one of the most important jobs in society. It's kinda hard to make me more sympathetic to their plight, but hey, you did it.
Why? They were well-read women, aka "woke women" so they "sent a message" (don't mess with the patriarchy). Also, King James, his Witch General Finders, and the "demonologists" were all men, and they found women an easier target to do bad things too. They argued that "their feminine wiles" misled many men; therefore, they're in cahoots with the dark side.
I wonder what happened during their childhood, really do, for all the people in Trump's government and his superrich supporters. There must have been some serious traumatic stuff going on. So much anger, hate, selfishness and lack of empathy.
we know trump himself has been "groomed" by his dad, fred trump, and his father before that. likely many in his cabinet have some sort of pervasions, that trump can use against them. leavitt, married the guy that groomed her, hes like 2.5times her age.
That's so weird. I mean there are going to be shitheads everywhere, but why do many in Gary porn? Is it just a weird statistical cluster, or is there something cultural?
Probably some great video essays on this, I should go looking >>
People involved in human development and intellectual pursuits rarely feel well under fascist regimes. That's why so many intellectuals and scientists fled Nazi Germany and why so many are fleeing the United States today.
Actually, thank you for asking this; with so much insanity coming from this administration I accepted it as real without question. However, after some searching it's unfortunately a real Facebook post by a real asshole. (hopefully that works, Facebooks interface is such garbage)
Also in a union. It's not perfect but beats no union. I love hearing the horror stories that the old timers recall from "before the union" like they're spooky stories.
They should ask Matt Bevin how things went when he tried to mess with the Kentucky teachers' unions.
Spoiler: We got Andy Beshear as governor.
(Yes, it's more nuanced than that. He was screwing with more public servants than just the teachers. But the teachers' not-legally-a-strike was highly effective, and I personally knew Republican teachers who actively campaigned against Bevin.)
Obama upgraded the Whitehouse tech, before him it was a complete mess of 70s POTS phones, slow internet, and old even for the time computers. Previous Presidents just didn't have a fucking clue about anything but smiling and talking.
Having a union allows them to represent themselves, it doesn't mean the other parties involved don't have power. It's about balancing things out so nobody is getting taken advantage of. Yeah, police unions are a problem, but it's because the balance of power is out of whack, not because the concept itself is bad. To compare a teachers union to that is laughable, they're not taking advantage of anyone, they're holding on by the skin of their teeth.
former NEA President Reg Weaver commented,
"Students must be protected from sexual predators and abuse, and teachers must be protected from false accusations".
He then refused to be interviewed
The union protected teachers in my schools that had several accusations. I believe it needs reform.
Yeah you gotta be a special kind of dumb to assume Trump doesn’t try to cheat at every possible chance presented to him. It is in his nature to be a piece of shit.
My high school was union free and was the best high school because of it. Well, that and how Solvay, NY teachers have sex with students, like Ashley Ramirez, who tore my heart out for a better grade. True story.

100_kg_90_de_belin@feddit.it · -2 pts · 1d
I may have fumbled that reference, but Bill Clinton managed to make a bipartisan effort to reduce welfare work.

That sure does sound like the US in a nutshell
teuniac_@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 1d
I totally get the point. But to be fair, the US has such a high GDP that it could afford all of this. But, it would require taxing the wealthy a bit more.
Atomic@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 1d
Or they could have just sat home and not blow up their entire arsenal in Iran. While selling those weapons to EU that is buying them to donate to Ukraine.
That alone would have been enough. Without even increasing taxes on anything

Why do people in the US equate "choice" with destroying other people's protections?
ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works · 20 pts · 1d
Almost all of it is, or at least originates, from racism, at least with schools.
When public schools allowed racial integration , school choice became a mechanism for racists to pull their kids from mixed schools.
It grew into things like charter schools that are private, often religious, schools that get public funding and maintain segregation.
SarahValentine@pawb.social · 14 pts · 1d
It's a classic conservative propaganda technique to name their evil plans the opposite of what they actually mean. If it contains the word "freedom" it's about tyranny. If it says "protect" it means persecution, and if it says "children" just mentally append "fuck" in front of it.
moustachio@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d

But at any rate, this is typical conservative rhetoric. "We've found (or invented) one thing we can complain about, so rather than having a rational, calm discussion about the state of things and how we can improve that thing, we want to cause the most drama, scare everybody the most, and tear everything down, while promising to replace it with something better, a promise that we'll never, ever, in a million years, deliver on."

It's by design.

That's why so many intellectuals and scientists fled Nazi Germany and why so many are fleeing the United States today.

is this real? or just rage bait?

Actually, thank you for asking this; with so much insanity coming from this administration I accepted it as real without question. However, after some searching it's unfortunately a real Facebook post by a real asshole. (hopefully that works, Facebooks interface is such garbage)

...a teacher's union.
(I'm not, just said it for artistic effect. I'm in a different union tho, and it's great.)
grrgyle@slrpnk.net · 1 pts · 1d
Also in a union. It's not perfect but beats no union. I love hearing the horror stories that the old timers recall from "before the union" like they're spooky stories.
nickiwest@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 22h
They should ask Matt Bevin how things went when he tried to mess with the Kentucky teachers' unions.
Spoiler: We got Andy Beshear as governor.
(Yes, it's more nuanced than that. He was screwing with more public servants than just the teachers. But the teachers' not-legally-a-strike was highly effective, and I personally knew Republican teachers who actively campaigned against Bevin.)

The issue is when yoh give power to police or teachers, you remove power from civilians or students.
Kaerkob@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 1d
Not everything that is broken should be dismantled.
lightnsfw@reddthat.com · 9 pts · 1d
Having a union allows them to represent themselves, it doesn't mean the other parties involved don't have power. It's about balancing things out so nobody is getting taken advantage of. Yeah, police unions are a problem, but it's because the balance of power is out of whack, not because the concept itself is bad. To compare a teachers union to that is laughable, they're not taking advantage of anyone, they're holding on by the skin of their teeth.
boonhet@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 1d
The only union mentioned in the article supported the law making it harder for pedo teachers to get new teaching jobs though?
Gaja0@lemmy.zip · -2 pts · 1d
I should have provided more, but these unions tend to resist measures to improve educator quality and protect bad teachers.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Education_Association#Criticism
The union protected teachers in my schools that had several accusations. I believe it needs reform.

My high school was union free and was the best high school because of it. Well, that and how Solvay, NY teachers have sex with students, like Ashley Ramirez, who tore my heart out for a better grade. True story.
