PS: The point here is NOT that poor people shouldn't have kids, it's that no one should be having kids without having the basics of childcare covered, which necessitates widespread systemic, societal, and economic change so that no parent needs to worry about those basics, and kids can grow up in secure, healthy environments. I completely forgot to mention this when I originally posted it, and that's my bad.

This is far too much "breeding is a privilege for the rich" for my tastes. Touch too much Eugenics.
"Just don't have kids" is a horrible solution.
"fix the system so people can make their own choices about having kids" is the actual solution.

Thats the point of the post. The user calling out "selfish is doing too much work" is saying that its not the individual who is to blame, its society.

lol ‘don’t have kids you can’t afford’
what a hot take
acosmichippo@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 17h
Yes, it is a hot take. At best, it's capitalist victim blaming, and at worst it's social darwinism.
You are blaming poor people for wanting a family when it should be a basic right for those who want it. We as a society should be ensuring our children are taken care of with healthcare, nutrition, education, etc.
To be clear, I am 100% child free myself, but I acknowledge that we collectively need kids from all backgrounds for a healthy society to persist.
phx@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 16h
I mean, yes but... at the same time the people that already have kids that are insufficiently fed /housed mayyyybe shouldn't be shooting for #5 and #6 etc.
acosmichippo@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 16h
sure, you can cherrypick extreme examples of any human behvavior to get angry at.
phx@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 6h
It's not that extreme, and I mainly just it as an example because it's something I've seen often enough for a variety of reasons (religion, Gov't cheques, etc).
That said, stuff like Elon and his quest to artificially impregnate at many women as possible with his progeny is just as messed up.
For those of us that aren't crazy rich arseholes, having one's first kid is often a trade off between an age when financial security is more likely, of prime birth/parenting years when one has a lower chance of complications/defects/etc, and then the issue of age gap between offspring after.
baines@lemmy.cafe · 1 pts · 10h
it’s not a hot take to admit we physically cannot support the current human population much less continue to grow
don’t put words in my mouth
my personal stance is in agreement with you and an actual first world community that valued children would help those willing to have them afford to do so
i just don’t think parenthood should be winged otherwise, it only harms the child
sure but until we put money into that all we do is create suffering
GalacticGrapefruit@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 7h
I mean, yeah, I agree. A kid should be one of the most serious choices a human can make. And the ability to safely make that choice (especially the choice to skip it) should be our civilization's clearest priority. The fact that it's treated with such utilitarian callousness by the billionaire class is unequivocally sociopathic.
Like... fuck, being a parent is hard work. The right to take a step back and give it some thought and prep is just a no-brainer.

THATS literally the world we live in today.

Okay... But there's so much more to life than that.
People work jobs they enjoy, have relationships, have experiences and generally love living.
To arbitrarily deny someone existence because of a shadow focused view of the world or an imagined joyless experience is at best pessimistic and at worst a projection of the parents fears onto the imaginary child.
I shouldn't exist. Due to medical complications during pregnancy my mother was advised to abort me. She gave birth to me and instead raised me badly 🤣
I'm glad that's the way it happened. Life is hard sometimes but it's also wonderful a lot of the time.
The issues you name are real, as real as the joys and pleasures of existence.
There's a reason even mad Max fights to survive. Because even that world is better than not existing. If he wasn't born, he doesn't get to make that choice.
UnequalExchange@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d
OK it was JOYFUL for YOU
YOU can go on with your life and be joyful with YOUR joyful life. Have fun buddy I guess 🤷🏿♂️
As for me? Ive been robbed, shot at, socially isolated due to the color of my skin and my poorness , left broke even after working long hours, and other awful things that have made me very bitter , and very VERY deranged. A person like me cannot be happy in a world like what we have created today and bbecause Im not happy I feel that my child will also be as unhappy as I am(and seeing as how I am actually surprisingly poorer than my parents ? Im pretty fucking sure that Im fucking right)
Also knowing how idiotic I am? I cannot guarantee that child will be alive by the time theyre an adult . I have done many stupid things that havve almost granted me a Darwin Award.... So what would happen to my child if they accompanied me on those things?
And there are people all over the planet just like me ... And youre tellling us tto put a child under our care?...
So YES I am clearly justified in denying my aethereal child from suffering all the BS I have suffered or that they could suffer under my care. And also denying my aethereal children from suffering of all the awful shit I have read of on the news.
Also its been shown that unhappy people like me tend to not have children anyways : https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5505668/

This discussion is hard and society is still not ready for it.
There are absolutely a lot of people that should not be bringing children into this world.
If as a society we're going to say "it's a fundamental right to breed", then we need to fucking fix society so that every child brought into this world is guaranteed the opportunity for success. That means universal public healthcare, universal public education through college, universal access to nutrition...just to start.
Our current system is nothing like that. Once a kid is born today, if their parents suck then they're just fucked, and maybe that kid should have tried being born to better parents.
LavaPlanet@sh.itjust.works · 7 pts · 1d
In a system designed to opress, and only function on oppression, is it really the parents fault for being trapped in said oppression? And I wouldn't even fault them for choosing to have a child atm, because that's mostly been removed as a choice.

Alvaro@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 29 pts · 1d
The issue here is that in a proper society, child care is a societal burden and not just a personal one. Meaning that in a proper society, both the rich and the poor can raise children properly and not let the child suffer.
Imagine a society where only the rich reproduce... That is arguably just as fucked up just in a different way.

Doom@lemmy.world · 25 pts · 1d
Ever notice these conversations always center around the poor. Articles and comments never scold the rich for not providing loving or mentally and emotionally healthy environments for their children. They can produce little affluent sociopaths all day every day and it's cool because they have money. As long as they aren't actively and visibly abusive to their children they'll never lose custody (and sometimes not even then). But the poor regularly have their kids taken for not having enough resources while we tisk tisk them for the crime of not being born privileged.

If you can't have children without enough financial support from a simple job or your government, then you're in a shit society that needs to get its workers rights and public wellfare up up up until you can have at least three children without thinking about if you can financially support them.
Having children if you want them is not selfish, it's a prerequisite to continue society.

Now I don’t even like arguing this anymore since reproductive rights in my neck of the woods have gone away, but you can’t seriously think that giving a kid a miserable, painful life is better than not having a kid at all
Soggy@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 9h
I can, actually. Mostly because even growing up in poverty is rarely just a "miserable, painful life" even somewhere like Burkina Faso but also because collectively providing for the next generation is a thing that we should be constantly pushing for, culturally and publicly. Because without a future there is nothing to fight for, without youth there is nobody to care for the old, without fresh eyes there is no passion for change.
gogonan@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 8h
I can’t help it. I’m glad to be infertile. Children born right now would inevitably face the extreme results of a climate crisis, depleting fresh water stores, the global sociopolitical breakdown currently happening in favor of far right fascists funded by billionaires, and everything that comes with that.
I feel we are past the point of no return and am confident that I will probably die before the absolute worst of it, but my generation’s children would not. I have never been more afraid for children in my life, and there are many in my own little village. I just do not and cannot foresee a future where this gets better, with as powerless as we are against surveillance and military technology. As nihilistic as it sounds, we are speedrunning extinction and the guard rails are gone. I do not want to see children suffer for it, and especially not my own.
Soggy@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 5h
If you truly believed that everything can only get worse from here I don't know why you're still here, frankly.
Edit: I'll elaborate. You will die before the worst of it. We all will. I went to school for ecology, I know how grim things are. Worsening climate crises are going to push desperate people out of increasingly hot and arid regions into places with more fresh water and that will cause terrible conflicts. We're driving a mass extinction event that's making the leaderboards. (I don't think we're hitting K-T numbers without nuclear war but it's gonna be bad.)
But we also, as a species, bounced back from a 98% population loss that lasted a hundred thousand years. And that was Stone Age technology. I have the utmost faith in our adaptability and I'm pretty confident humanity will survive our own bullshit. Further, I don't think morality enters into it. Life is amoral. Existence is amoral. The ability to contemplate the nature of existence does not elevate us above that amorality. So I'm not throwing in the towel.

What’s much more important are parents that love their children and want them to have it better than they did. And there are probably just as many of those among people barely making rent than there are among millionaires, if not more.
What we don’t need are people having children than don’t want or don’t care about them. Because that’s a surefire way to fuck up kids, no matter their financial and social background.
kestrel7_7@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 20h
This is the crux. I’m reasonably well adjusted, I like to think I would love my theoretical kid. But it’s hard to overcome the fact that the whole society is getting way harsher and so many people are poorer than their parents were. My life has been a lot more difficult than my parents’ life was, and it seems like if I had kids, their lives would be even more difficult than mine has been.
ChexMax@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 1d
Well by that "logic" no one should have kids, because you can't control everything. You can't control if your country goes to war, or if your spouse dies (or if you both die), you can't control if you get bankrupted by surprise medical bills or if your community is devastated by a natural disaster. When I was already pregnant my husband's company (and others in his field) had mass layoffs. He ended up moving out of tech and into a trade when there were no positions open. It's been some awfully tight years while he's been apprenticing, but our kids are thriving. We'll figured it out mentality is actually the most important thing when having kids.
It's people who don't plan to figure it out who shouldn't have them.

Anyone who succeeds in an environment like that would have succeeded even more in a more positive environment. Hardships are never a good thing. Some people flourish anyway, in the same way that some folks don’t let chronic illness or disability stop them. It doesn’t mean we have to celebrate the chronic illness or disability (or poverty). We celebrate the people who achieved greatness in spite of it.

All the meme says is that if you can't provide for a child you shouldn't have one. It's not controversial at all. If you live in a country that takes child welfare seriously then you're probably able to provide for a child regardless of your economic situation, in which case get your nut and have a kid. But it's not controversial to say that you shouldn't have children that you're unable to provide for. Like 10 percent of kids in the US are food insecure. This kids are being traumatized because they don't know when their next meal will be. Housing insecurity causes trauma too.
im_fine_sandy@nord.pub · 3 pts · 13h
Making judgements about who ought to have children is always controversial.
It's somewhat moot anyway. Are there people out there planning families and thinking "we will probably be food insecure, but I really like babies so let's have a kid anyway" ?
edible_funk@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 11h
Is it controversial to say don't go skydiving without a parachute? Don't backpack in the outback without plenty of supplies and an emergency kit? Don't climb k2 without rope? Jump in the fuckin ocean without knowing how to swim? No, that's all common sense shit. So is not having kids if you cannot provide for them. That makes you a shitty person and de facto abusive parent. You're inflicting trauma on children to satisfy your biological imperative. A loving parent doesn't really stack up to not knowing when your next meal will be or how long you'll actually get to stay in this apartment before having to move, again. It is traumatizing to children. And if nobody was doing it we wouldn't have an oversaturated foster system, one in ten kids in the US wouldn't be going to bed tonight hungry not knowing when they'll get to eat again. It is cruel and selfish to have children that you cannot materially provide for. It's insane that so many are defending this, but it is Lemmy after all. Makes fuckin reddit look reasonable half the time.

You don't seem to have a good understanding of how life unfolds for people.
No one plans to be food insecure. People who are usually have a genuine belief that things are about to get better, next week or next month.
Additionally, people who are poor planners and poor decision makers are precisely those who are more likely to be food insecure.
Ask any pregnant woman whether they intend to do the best they can for their child, and I'm sure that the universal answer is "yes, of course".

That's exactly my point though.
Having a child is a roll of the dice for anyone, because people's circumstances change.
If you find that you're pregnant today, but don't have much money in the bank, you shouldn't have a child. However, if tomorrow your baby daddy says he's going to join the army, then your circumstances now allow you to have a child.
Nobody plans to be broke for the rest of their lives.

No I understand it. Thinking further than yourself and thinking that government assistance and family will help you out. Diapers and formula are expensive. School, school supplies. The clothes they need as they grow, the food they're gonna need, the potential therapies that may be needed. Doctors appointments that sometimes insurance a doesn't cover. Then you might have a child born with an incurable disease that you might give your whole financial being trying to treat.
The amount of emotional availability that's needed, the patience and god forbid they die!!!! Plus it's a lifetime thing it never ends they don't turn 21 and leave you forever it's a forever thing. If you're still in contact with your parents, how many people are in their mid 30's who are still on good terms with their parents? Who do you still call or go to when all goes to shit?
Like fuck man!!!!
No I will not attempt to provide a life to something. Hell I can hardly afford myself. If I could provide financial reliability and if I wasn't in the living situation I'm in now, maybe but even still, I don't have that emotional expenditure and I know I'm not meant to raise a human and I'm okay with that.

The problem is that when parents have children in their teens and 20s, the children are much more likely to be healthy, and if the parents have children in their late 30s or 40s, the children are more likely to be sick.
So couples who decide "well, we're broke, but we'll figure it out" tend to have healthier children because they have them at younger ages.
At the risk of being controversial and making people angry, this happened quite a bit in the USA and it caused tension: many white people went to college, dated around, joined the work force in their mid 20s, married in late 20s and then got a home, and then had children in their early 30s. On the other hand, immigrants who didn't go to college and did jobs that immediately resulted in decent wages but were not white collar or prestigious, often had children in their early 20s. I believe it was part of the reason for the racist backlash that happened with Trump's election: it wasn't just too many immigrants, it was too many and they were doing too well and somehow thriving.
The again, this is my personal view without data. This could be tested by looking at things like autism and disability rates of children of young parents versus older parents.
This isn't about race; instead I am saying this idea that having children at a young age is bad because it's financially irresponsible goes against instinct and is often a bad choice for the children. Better to be a poor healthy child than a sick rich child.
Also, the average human has something like 7-11 genetic defects, so it's normal to have a certain amount of genetic errors. But children of older parents are likely to have more.
RBWells@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 18h
One of my kids is a genetics scientist and she explained this as - it's not that older women have a higher rate of conceiving sick kids, but our immune systems do a worse job of figuring that out and aborting them. So 22 year old gets pregnant, embryo is not healthy, body yeets it before she even knows she's pregnant. 42 year old body doesn't screen as well and it might stick.
Anecdotally - I had one set young & one in late 30s and there is no difference in their health or intelligence. The one difference I think the older ones got was watching me go to school and get a better job, they were around for that economic arc and sort of internalized the belief it can be done. Well, and the second set were bigger because I was, as the midwife put it, better nourished as we were not so poor.
And I cannot with confidence say that my kids harmed my economic situation as they were the reason I had to get a better job. Probably wouldn't have bothered otherwise.

This doesnt read to me as oops babies, it's people who want kids even though they can't afford to take care of them. I agree with the other part but it's like telling a woman she shouldn't go out at night, it sucks that you have to do that but that's the reality you live in. You can't put another person through hardship because you wanted kids.
SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 3h
Yes those realities are created by capitalism, but not every baby in a poor family is an accident. Plenty of people on the planet have purposely decided to bring a child into this world even though they are financially incapable to provide for that child, even though they fully well know that government assistance isn't enough or doesn't even exist. Like I used to live in a neighborhood where lots of poor people live, and many families there have 4 - 6 children just because they believe their religion dictates they should have large families even though they live in a small two bedroom apartment. Guess what, most of those kids do not escape poverty and repeat the cycle and some even resort to crime and I'm not talking about petty theft I'm talking about serious organized crime where innocent people die. So not only did they pass on the hardship to the next generation they also multiplied it and spread the suffering beyond their own family and left the problems for society to solve.
freebee@sh.itjust.works · -1 pts · 2d
Fine argument against people trying to have their 5th kid while barely taking care of nr 1 to 4, but it is bordering criminal to say people should be rich before being allowed (ethically) to have a child. In a proper society, no child is left behind. Housing, food, education are basic human rights, and you're making it sound okay for those things to only be available to wealthy people. Trying to forge late stage capitalism justification.
jumping_redditor@sh.itjust.works · -1 pts · 1d
no child is left behind if they are required to have trust funds before being considered children.
Snowclone@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 1d
Reproduction should be one of the most basic human rights, it's arguably why we exist on a logical level alone. of course don't have kids if you don't want to, that's equally important to people choosing to have kids, the choice should always be yours, but here we are in a society where 60% are below the poverty line and everyone is at best 3-6mo away from homeless, the vast majority are 1mo. it takes 9mo to gestate a human, you can be riding high for years leading up and then bam, cancer, car accident, job loss, any catastrophic event that levels your bank account, and now you are struggling bad. Also claiming any living generation is recklessly having too many kids is absurd, birth rates are the lowest they've ever been, what planet are you living on?
humanspiral@lemmy.ca · -2 pts · 2d
This is very offensive because you forbid hope. Young people certainly need to figure out their lives/path to wealth, and sociopathic fraud is one one path. Older (30s) people may be doing all the right things within the system such as home ownership and 401ks, but that can go tits up too. Forced nihilism/pessimism is innapropriate.
By all means, all should be free for any family planning choices, but promoting a society that makes having a child affordable is the real freedom of choice. The point that the current state of society is an extremely harsh one, and near term pessimism is realistic, is fair, but its ugly that no one can contribute improvement. https://naturalfinance.blogspot.com/2026/09/a-global-prosperity-manifesto.html

"Children, which are entirely optional, should be fed and cared for"
"Oh so you wanna exterminate disabled people??"
If our society was able to help those in extreme poverty, they can have all the kids they want. But bringing new life into the world, which is entirely your fault, knowing they will suffer... Is evil. You can have sex as much as you want, but if you cant 100% support and love the most disabled person youve ever witnessed and then some, you shouldnt have kids.
That goes for all walks of life. Any child can be born with spina bifida, an extreme intellectual disability, or some other dice-roll complication. Until medical care is free and you can pay for whatever isnt, you shouldnt have kids. Just like, objectively.
ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 1d
Unfortunately they aren't entirely optional. Pregnancies can be forced, controls can fail, and abortions denied. Until those aren't issues, it's the same dynamic as:
Until children are entirely optional, those without resources to raise them are most likely to be in the category of not choosing to have kids.
It has to be less about those in need not having kids and more about there being less people in need, period.p
But this is childfree, so it's supposed to be antinatalist. So likewise the value in these posts is drawing out those connections, and not just cheeky accusations of eugencism or rape apologia.

Same with shelter! Can’t afford a home? Just find some cave your family can sleep in. No mortgage or rent to worry about.
School supplies? Pfft, just educate your kids at home in your cave, scratching writing into the walls - no backpacks, notebooks, or other supplies needed!

Eq0@literature.cafe · 8 pts · 1d
You look at your own situation and think that’s the norm.
Parental leave exists only in some countries and in very few does it cover until the kid goes to school. Even after the kid is in school, school has reduced hours compared to a job, more so considering commuting. You loose flexibility to pursue your career, thus potentially losing out on promotions.
I have not seen an “almost free” daycare. Best I got was comparable to rent costs. Unless you are fortunate enough to have grandparents nearby.
Diapers are 20-50cents each, so at least a couple of bucks a day, every day, for years.
