mybuttnolie@sopuli.xyz · 5 pts · 267d

my city is kind of known for bad drivers. 7 times out of 10 when you're joining the highway, the idiot in front of you is not accelerating and you have to join the 100km/h road doing 50. almost died today because of one of these idiots, they didn't look and there was someone coming from behind and we all had to slam the brakes. oh and it's snowy and icy here, and today it rained.

Ads. I am so fucking sick of ads. I have ad blockers on many things and my next network project will be adding a pihole to my network for network ad block. Sick of it.

proudblond@lemmy.world · 51 pts · 267d (3 replies)

My husband has set up a pihole and it’s the best ever. It used to run off an actual raspberry pi but now we have a home server and he got it set up on there. Literally yesterday he also added Tailscale to our computers and phones and it seriously rocks my socks. I don’t even exactly know what it does but suddenly I’m not getting any ads while at my in-laws house on their WiFi so, score! I am not tech savvy enough to know about these things, much less set them up myself, but I am super thankful that my husband aggressively hates ads and I get to benefit from his crusade against them.

morriscox@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 266d (2 replies)

Tailscale is a virtual private network (VPN). It connects everything together that is connected to it as though they are all in the same place. You might be physically at your in-laws house but your device is communicating with a private network over your in-laws' network.

Lemminary@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 266d (1 reply)

Whoa, that's insane. I didn't think VPNs worked like that.

comfy@lemmy.ml · 6 pts · 266d

Large corporate offices often run VPNs in a similar way, anyone with a work-from-home laptop or phone generally has to log into a VPN to get internet/network access.

supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz · 16 pts · 267d

I have an executive function disorder, ads literally prey on my disability even as society laughs at the idea of attention being something other than a product of pure limitless willpower.

This drives me up the wall here on Lemmy and it manifests itself in so many ways. People just being outright shitty and calling each other names over a difference in opinion like "shitlib" rather than listening to what they're saying.

Or even those who misinterpret why they're being downvoted and start spitballing while using that as an opportunity to grind their axe. "Oh, poor me is being downvoted for having these perfect ideals, it's the grander community who hates me, wah!" No, you're just being hardheaded and causing your own problems, why are you blaming everyone else?

Gah! 🙄

I would like to add a holiday that once celebrated peace, but now celebrates militarism and war: Veterans Day (US). Not long ago, it was St. Martin’s day, a feast that commemorates a Roman soldier who abandoned his military office to become a monk. It was customary to sign peace treaties on his feast day for this reason. Included in this was Armistice Day, the end of World War 1. Eventually in the US this was changed to Veterans Day in 1954.

Entropy is some god damned bullshit.

I had no idea how bad entropy was until I was an adult. I can't be happy just relaxing because of the knowledge that everything around me is fucking falling apart and I have to spend every waking hour fighting the entropy around me. You can't just live in a house or condo or apartment, it's constantly crumbling.

rekabis@lemmy.ca · 6 pts · 267d

But somehow matter magically organizes itself into life?

There is a recent, decently-supported hypothesis that the emergence of life is a byproduct of entropy, and the need for a system as a whole to almost “self-process” itself from a state of high order to one of lower order. So life is an emergent “engine” that allows entropy to function more efficiently. Or, at least a more efficient path than non-life.

Downside is that life - as we understand it - is only possible under a narrow range of environmental conditions, and complex life even more so. So while “life” may exist throughout the universe in measured single-celled doses, complex life - especially sapient life - may be distressingly rare or even wholly absent except for us.

Which is a real kick in the nuts when you examine the scientific evidence of how fast we are hurtling towards our own extinction.

The kind that says “I’m special, but you aren’t”

The kind that lets billionaires exist and fuck with national politics and laws. The kind that lets rich people or corporations off of crimes with little or no punishment. The kind that lets a religious person use their religion to be shitty in any way, as a shield or a cudgel. The kind that lets someone festoon their pickup with LED lights and a squat so you’re blinded at night when they’re coming at you or tailgating you.

All of them think they’re special and the rules don’t apply, they don’t care how it affects those around them - or others are to be exploited.

I've had people just tell me they don't take orders and then just move away, sometimes without even alerting the staff that can take orders.

That being said, SQL is pretty cool. It kills aliens and doesn’t afraid of anything.

AT&T. We recently had an issue where our internet stopped working properly. My mom had to call them four times before they actually fixed our internet. The first time, she was put on hold for about 40 minutes before either the call ended itself or they hung up. The second time, she actually got through to someone but they didn't fix our internet and instead told us that our current internet package would soon be phased out and then spent about half an hour basically forcing her to getting something called "AT&T Air".

The third time she called, my mom told them that she didn't want AT&T Air and that if she can't use the package we have now, then we'll be switching ISPs. The woman on the phone said that she'll cancel the new package and put her on hold for about half an hour but she never did actually cancel the package or fix our internet, and she also never returned so my mom just hung up on her. The fourth time she called, the guy on the phone ran a diagnosis on our internet and finally fixed it within a few minutes. We have no idea why it took so long for them to do this but we're glad to finally have working internet.

But even though we do now have working internet, we are still thinking about switching ISPs. Even though they did send the equipment to use AT&T Air, we are not going to use it and we are going to send it back and try to get them to actually cancel the package. We aren't sure exactly when we are going to switch ISPs but my mom stated she wants to wait until after the holidays to do so, which probably means no sooner than January.

GreenKnight23@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 266d

not sure how it works at ATT but usually for ISPs they contract multiple call centers for support.

it sounds like the first three times were to the same call center vendor and the fourth was to an actual ATT company support center. this routing happens randomly or based on time of day (Tod).

these vendors have incentives to collect the most calls, and resolve them as quickly as possible. they also have a hidden incentive to convert as many support calls to sales calls.

a "completed call" is one where the caller ends the call after a goal has been achieved. this means if you hang up before the goal is achieved it's not counted against the vendor and shows as a "disconnect" even if you were on hold for six hours. many operators will identify what you want, deem you as a nuisance, and place you on hold long enough to get you to hang up and make you someone else's problem. they have the incentive to convert you to sales and get paid a bonus for these sales.

it seems like your mother was handled by a veteran contract operator that upsells and dumps.

next time, tell them you want to speak to someone in cancelations and you will be transferred to someone inside the ATT customer service center. from there you can get transferred to an operator that actually works for ATT.

Clbull@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 266d (20 replies)

At the moment, everything.

This time last year, I was meant to be buying my own apartment and finally moving out from my parents' home. Then I got laid off, spent seven months struggling to find work and then landed a temporary purchase ledger job which I fucking hate. Partially because the commute takes me about 2 hours each way, partially because I work an 8-5 shift and have to get up at stupid o'clock in the morning on office days, and partially because we use Oracle Fusion which is the biggest crock of shit I've ever used.

Unfortunately that means I have to live with my parents for even longer. Renting somewhere is out of the question because Bristol is the second-most expensive British city to live in, and I basically can't get a mortgage without a full time job.

Sometimes I question why I chose to pivot towards accounting. I have a History degree, I'm fully AAT qualified and I'm halfway through my ACCA and I'm earning £13.50 an hour, or just £1.29 above minimum wage on a zero-hours contract. I can genuinely earn nearly as much from stacking shelves, flipping burgers or pouring pints, not that there's really many hospitality or retail jobs available. Office days genuinely take 13 hours out of my day. 8 of these are working, 4 of these are the commute and 1 is the lunch break I get.

My future is uncertain and I feel like there's no point in bothering. Best-case scenario, AI is truly a bubble that's going to burst, crash the stock market and leave us in a recession. At worst, it takes all our jobs and the rich leave us to starve.

Despite a brief relationship with a woman who finally popped my cherry (we're still really close friends and I'm grateful she took my virginity), my love life is practically nonexistent. Online dating is an absolute void where I only seem to match with GPS-spoofing South-East Asian and African women either pulling love scams or trying to find a Western spouse and the means to a green card. Two ladies messed around with my feelings and led me on big time this year and that's left me exhausted.

I have a lipoma on my neck which is going to cost me a lot to remove, and good luck actually finding the time to get the consultation and surgery/liposuction booked. The NHS won't do it because it's not cancerous, even though this thing has grown to the point where it's 5.5cm in diameter and sticks out like a sore thumb.

thevoidzero@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 265d

You expected version should always be more than what you're today. Not because you're bad but because you'll just get better anyway. Learn to be satisfied in life with little things and little improvements, those will slowly make things better.

Also I find that having little projects (in computer or real life) where you make things helps with mental health. When you build something, however minor, it gives you the feeling of accomplishment. And if you can focus on making something, solving those problems, then you are sufficiently distracted as well.

The shrinkflation. I know there used to be 6 bars in a box, not 5, don't bullshit me. I know the wheat crackers used to be bigger. etc

People who leave their collection bins on the sidewalk on the wrong day, or all week.

People who park in the clearly marked bus stop area. The bus will honk every time. Where's the traffic ticket agent? If you live here and overstay your legal parking spot by an attosecond, blam, ticket. Park in a bus stop: free parking?

Low quality sausages, especially anything from supermarkets. For quality gotta track down those Eastern European shops that smell like garlic and have a surly old man that only speaks Hungarian at the cash. Tasty! (The sausage, not the man)

Enormously bright LED lights on EVERYTHING.

Looking at beautiful young women knowing I'll never have a chance again, my dating pool is the secretary from Monsters Inc.

That the species is heading towards 10 billion by 2050.

Mini USB connectors.

Needless standards duplication or overlap.

That new constructions aren't wired up for Ethernet, coax, Fiber and "generic 10 conductor cable for purposes" between rooms and floors by default.

Front load washing machines that smell like someone took a shit in it despite the fact that I followed every recommendation and cleaning cycle, and I even cleaned the boot and hoses.

The sadness of people sleeping in fields in winter.

Recycling bags that rip or straps that break.

Nasty cheap imitation chocolate in supermarket cookies labelled "chocolatey", etc. I like trying stuff from the "ethnic" aisle at the grocery store, I'll check the ingredients next time. Nasty stuff. There used to be carob bean for substituting chocolate, that at least tasted natural, I guess now even that is too much.

Microwave popcorn that leaves dry husks at the back of my throat.

That hard drive with my best porn on it stopped working.

Brother printer interfaces, and for that matter, their P-Touch machines. I feel like Brother has released about 65 million models of P-Touch, none of which have the same layout, menus, functionality, or capabilities, and each one comes from the factory set up to use 6 inches of blank ribbon on each side of your 6 letter label.

Thrift stores that commonly overcharge now. I mean really, it takes me 5 seconds to look up the price, why do you bother? Like those Amazon places, I mean, Amazon itself lists that little LED projector for less than 80$, why did you put a 100$ sticker on it?

Goretex. It's an over-rated material from the '70s that's only used because you have to put the Goretex label for the perceived quality on clothes but it's a shitty material compared to newer stuff that's cheaper and better.

Cheap electronics allows extremely loud car stereos, and has also killed the home hi-fi setup, everything is a plastic mono Bluetooth speaker so.. you can stream twice compressed audio into a two inch speaker in a plastic tube?

Low effort AI slop all over the place. No, a cougar with its injured cub didn't follow you home from the forest so you could heal its cub.

There used to be 12 hotdogs in a pack and only 8 buns in a bag. They fixed that now, but now there's spaghetti sauce with too much for three servings but not enough for four in a jar.

The fact that if you die tomorrow it will actually impact very few people and you aren't doing shit to change that

rekabis@lemmy.ca · 6 pts · 267d

So what? Most of us were never meant to be impactful, or even lack the ability to be impactful. I would posit that life in general was only ever meant for us to vibe with the universe for a brief time. In the span of epochs, and especially once humanity makes itself extinct, vanishingly little will have any material impact on even the planet, much less reality as a whole.

Unless you manage to trigger false vacuum decay. Then you have made the biggest possible impact by destroying the entire universe. Not sure this is an appropriate goal to reach for, but hey. You do you.

During my senior capstone project, our group was prepping a slideshow, and we were picking a shape for text boxes so we'd be stylistically consistent

I said "not circles" with more conviction than I intended. It was pretty late, so when they asked me why I said "because they're dumb and I hate them" instead of the full explanation about PowerPoint being really bad at elliptical text boxes

It started a running joke where whenever our prototype's design required circles, they'd pretend to talk me down like I was going to start fighting the circles XD

victorz@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 266d (2 replies)

Just people in general who are unaware of how their actions affect others negatively, in any and all aspects of life. Especially when out in public, of course. At the grocery store, at the mall, in the parking lot, while driving, when talking, when online, every goddamn thing.

There are countless small things that are simple to avoid yet cause significant inconvenience to others. Or on the flip side, simple things to do, that would mean very much to another person.

Just think about your surroundings, treat everyone with kindness, respect, and give them the benefit of the doubt. Be welcoming. That's what makes/would make the world go around, and a nice place to live in.

But people live in their goddamn individualism bubbles and are completely oblivious. Sometimes people will be walking towards me in the street, perhaps two or three people side by side. And they'll fucking walk straight at me and I'll have to literally stop in my tracks to avoid colliding with them. Literally a few feet apart will they realize we will collide unless they change their trajectory. Mind you they won't apologize or realize they inconvenienced me. No. No, they'll just realize that they need to swerve unless they want to collide. And I know they see me from afar, because sometimes we'll even have eye contact and shit. Idiots.

People, man. Why it gotta be this way. 🤌

IronBird@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 266d (1 reply)

just fyi, that colliding thing is literally a power move for some of these asshats. only way they ever learn to stop is if someone actually checks em

victorz@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 265d

Well call me Mr... Mr Check! I will not budge, dammit. I am walking on the correct side of the road (according to road/traffic rules where I live). I am never in the wrong. 😆
