New York sculptor spent $100,000 to make a Charlie Kirk statue no one wants to buy

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jul/20/sculptor-charlie-kirk-statue-new-york

Sergio Furnari said he thought the lifesize sculpture – which no one commissioned – would raise ‘millions’ of dollars

To add injury to insult, Furnari recently broke his foot working on the statue, after tripping over a roll of tape in his studio.

“Is it cursed? Maybe. I don’t know,” he told the Guardian.

It's so funny to see a grifter crash out like that. Ah we need more of this. Legit thinking of edging grifters into unsustainable businesses might be the highest return meme of this decade.

floofloof@lemmy.ca · 25 pts · 40d (1 reply)

I heard the main reason people didn't want to buy this is that it doesn't adequately reflect Charlie Kirk's towering stature in the world. If he made a 100-foot-high version in gold, Elon Musk told me he'd personally pay billions for it.

TranscendentalEmpire@lemmy.today · 33 pts · 40d (3 replies)

It's also just objectively a horrible statue. The body proportions are just awful. You can tell he's spent 90 percent of his time and effort on the head and just draped the body in baggy clothing to hide his work.

floofloof@lemmy.ca · 23 pts · 40d (2 replies)

Hey, give the man a break. It may be a terrible, ugly sculpture of a nasty, hateful man but he only wants a few million dollars for it. It probably took him days to make!

"People are cheap" is something you say when someone tries to haggle a 90% discount on your like-new dresser that you listed for an already cheap $40 on craigslist. It is not something you say when someone fails to buy your statue of a person who was human garbage, made out of actual garbage, for 1000% return on your already bullshit overinflated supposed cost of 100k for like $200 in materials and your (apparently) very precious time and effort. You're cheap dude, and an idiot. Get a commission first and make an actual sculpture out of actual sculpting materials (clay, stone, metal, even fucking plaster) instead of spray painting a cotton t shirt and some Levi's, dude. Your time is worthless when this is the outcome.

This is the funniest article:

In desperation, Furnari set up an online fundraising campaign, hoping to raise an initial $150,000, but potentially millions of dollars, which he said would allow him to take the statue on tour. As of Thursday, he had raised $1,400.

And then he goes on:

“Things financially are a total, absolute nightmare. It’s like wow. People are cheap, man. You know, people talk, talk – I know lots of people out there, and everybody’s so cheap. You know, like, it’s disgusting how cheap they are.”

There is no way that this thing consumed material worth $100k. It's a steel wire frame with an outer shell coated in resin, and spray painted.

The whole article is filled with gems like this and the exact right length for this sort of human interest piece about someone who is just trash.

During a cost of living crisis this guy drops 100k+ on something no one asked for and complains that people are cheap.

I get that people do own statues, but who exactly did he think was going to buy this? Anyone stupid enough to like this either in content or execution is too stupid to have the money to spend on it. Anyone rich enough to afford it could spend their money on things they actually like and don't just pretend to. Not that intelligence and wealth appear to have anything to do with each other at this point, but this guy clearly doesn't understand the way things work.

A New York sculptor has been left furious after spending $100,000 of his own money to build a lifesize statue of Charlie Kirk, only to find that no one wants to buy it.

What sculptor has 100k of their own money?

ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 39d

He's a New York sculptor, which means it was $100,000 of his parents' money.

anugeshtu@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 39d (2 replies)

How did he spend 100k on it? Is it made of gold?

Donkter@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 39d (1 reply)

Nah things are just expensive. It looks like bronze so that's probably many thousands possibly 10s of thousands. Any processes that he sent out for were probably crazy, plus transportation of the thing. Any tooling he had to buy could have been thousands more. I'm sure he's factoring work time and new york living expenses into the cost (keep in mind all these materials are also new york prices). We could maybe turn our nose up at the hourly rate he gave himself but it was probably weeks to months of working hours to make. He probably embellished a little to make the nice round claim of 100k, but I can believe 10s of thousands of dollars worth of labor went into this.

Artists don't just struggle because no one will buy their work, art can be expensive as fuck to make depending on what kind of artist you are.

Now don't get me wrong either. Making a Charlie statue is cringe as fuck and a bad idea. I can tell I don't like the artist or what he stands for. I'm sure he chose Charles because, as I mentioned, it's expensive as fuck to make art so he thought he was making something that would sell.

anugeshtu@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 39d

100k? That cost 100k? The likeness is not bad (which is not helping the appeal), but just speaking artistically nothing else about that statue is even acceptable, particularly for 100k.

It looks like a pole frame with newspaper padding for the body, an actual t shirt and jeans drapped over that body that has so much glue saturated into them to harden them that they look like they are soaking wet, literal stickers for the "FREEDOM" letters on the shirt, an actual microphone prop shoved into a mannequin hand bolted on the end of the arm pole, actual shoes on the feet, multiple colors of metallic spray paint, and a thick clear coat sealant. Like $200-300 dollars in materials for the entire body, tops. How did you spend 100k on this? Did you pay a 100k licensing fee for use of his likeness or something? This feels like a tax write-off scam or something. What a fucking waste of money, regardless.

Unfortunately this Charlie Kirk statue is made of cheap materials spray-painted to look like metal. So if you tried to melt it down you'd just end up tragically burning it to ash. It would actually burn at a much lower temperature than you'd need to melt a proper statue, so everyone needs to be very careful around it with lighters, gasoline, etc., lest there be a mishap.

Sounds like an opportunity to import a tradition.

By looking at the statue one can tell he is a mediocre artist so I assume he tried to grift instead of shining with his artistic skills.

Wow the more I read the article the more shocked I am at how delusional this guy is. His chain of logic as to why he built the statue and what he expected from it are completely insane. He clearly expected right wing people to rain money on him for this statue. %100 grift. He may also be interested in having sex with Erica.

Charlie Kirk was just a baloon and this guy found that out quite painfully. The icing on the cake? He is angry that people are cheap lol:

“Things financially are a total, absolute nightmare. It’s like wow. People are cheap, man. You know, people talk, talk – I know lots of people out there, and everybody’s so cheap. You know, like, it’s disgusting how cheap they are.”

If this is installed in public we can safely assume that the microphone will be painted to look like a penis.

If no one wants to buy it, its not 100k.

ibelieveinthehousehippo@lemmy.ca · 20 pts · 39d (3 replies)

The article mentions that it cost the artist $100k in materials to make

ennof@feddit.org · 10 pts · 39d

That's also what the title says

frongt@lemmy.zip · 9 pts · 39d

Labor and materials. It's definitely not $100k in just materials, even with the cost of bronze (especially since it doesn't look like solid bronze, it looks like bronzed clothing). He must be figuring a very high wage for himself.

SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 39d

Cocaine and Hos not cheap.

floofloof@lemmy.ca · 5 pts · 39d

That's an old-fashioned view. The magic of modern capitalism is that you can lose money every single day, providing something no one wants, and still get valued at hundreds of billions of dollars.

bigfish@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 6 pts · 40d

Maybe he could make it into a fountain somehow

100k to make that? guess the grift is poetic for it

Michelangelo at least waited until he was commissioned to do something. I translated an old Latin piece of conversation scroll between Michelangelo and the pope, it said..."Show me the money, bitch!".

So he wanted to make big money, and failed to research his market? Tough luck.

Looks like he's.. angling for a job a SpaceX? https://www.sergiofurnari.com/take-us-to-mars/

floofloof@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 40d

He's an Elon Musk fan who touts a statue of ordinary workers around SpaceX's HQ without noticing any irony. And he calls himself a scientist of thermal tiles because some of his art works are ceramics. The guy seems like a Grade A MAGA grifter and idiot: no notion of what a scientist is or how much they know that he doesn't, a burning desire for Elon Musk to notice him with no clue that Musk will never give a shit, and an ongoing effort to scam people into buying wildly overpriced MAGA merchandise.

The lunch on a beam sculpture looks better than the Charlie Kirk one though.

Duke_Nukem_1990@feddit.org · 5 pts · 40d

Well duh, it's missing Charlie - The Fountain's - best and most recent feature, ofc no one wants that.

lemmelemmy@feddit.org · 4 pts · 38d

So grifter is furious that he couldn’t monetise far right? Fucking good riddance then. Not because I’m saying this to defend those cretins. Making this persons statue is basically means he’s trying to immortalise his existence means his views too. If you don’t like him why make a fucking statue? What sort of brain dead idea is this? He could have donated that money to a charity instead trying to make easy bucks.

idiomaddict@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 40d (1 reply)

He’s just trying to cash in on blucifer hype

frongt@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 39d

He didn't even break his foot on the statue. He tripped over a roll of tape he left on the floor.

nullspace@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 39d (1 reply)

Perhaps depicting the subject moments before their assassination was not the best idea.

EtAl@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 5 pts · 39d

I'd pay 100k for a statue of him just after getting assassinated.

anomnom@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 39d

LiveLM@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 39d (1 reply)

To add injury to insult, Furnari recently broke his foot working on the statue, after tripping over a roll of tape in his studio.
“Is it cursed? Maybe. I don’t know,” he told the Guardian.

does the Guardian usually write things as bluntly as in this article?

it's rather refreshing to see things stated for what they are

A bit expensive for target practice. Could just print out a photo of Kirk's neck and put it on a dummy.

tgcoldrockn@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 39d

Thank heavens TheGuardian has become a global mouthpiece for this work, prompting a surge of interest in this topic, a boost the artist will appreciate.
