The part that frustrates me is that we already have been through this sort of shit with "smart speakers". The slowest way to interact with a computer or machine will always be through speech.
When Vibe coding the slowest thing is reading the code produced. If you review the code though everything grinds to a halt. I've vibe coded a feature or two. It took 1 day to vibe code and another week or two to properly review the code it wrote.
The industry 'secret' is that no one gives a shit. Claude has like two 9s of uptime.
What I've read is it's meant to keep crosstalk from multiple devs using AI at once from messing up each other's work. So everyone can just vibe code and not have any idea what they're doing in their own little space.
But then it's harder to micromanage everyone. Better to hire people with no skill, then force them to drive to a central location, and distribute masks to have them tell an AI what to do.
The toilet chairs and nutrients paste IV will be things workers have to buy on their own as part of the contract.

For me they are roughly on par with each other when accounting for stutter and autocorrect/ me being stupid and mixing up spelling styles. Regardless voice recognition software almost always shits the bed with my accent eventually since it gets thicker the longer I talk, it doesn't like my fucked up mix of American brogue, old arkansaner, and standard southern Californian even got a bit of German Minnesota mixed in.
I type waaaaayyyyyy slower than I talk. And I talk waaaayyyy slower than I think. And I would definitely destroy any computer trying to keep up with my random and meaningless thoughts.
I sometimes can type faster than I normally speak, but that depends on the keyboard (needs something without a membrane sensing apparatus (not rubber domes) for it to work), and I sometimes can type faster than I could think clearly, which can be detrimental to the quality of output. But hey, at a company, they could use it as a metric.

This is for prompting an LLM. The "senior dev" in this case is not coding anything and neither are typing anything. The idea is that speaking to the LLM is faster than typing a conversation with it.

My office's open floors have a thorough setup of noise dampening elements. The floor is some fancy carpet, the ceiling lined with some kind of foam elements, each desk has a backing made of that stuff too, and it works fairly well to keep the noise level manageable even when five people around me are in calls (which, given they're second level support, happens fairly often). Our headset have ANC and some fancy built in voice isolation system, so it's not even a bother for people on the other end.
Sure, it's not cheap, but it's neither as isolating as cubicles nor some dystopian bullshit like this. There are solutions if you're willing to spend on them (and after making a show of leading by example, our boss somehow got very willing to spend that money...)

The hurdle there is comprehending multiple speakers with different backgrounds fast enough. Typing that fast isn't unrealistic if it's your own thoughts you're putting out.

You might be underestimating how fast people working in tech type. Actual issue studied today in comprehension is the fact that keyboard typing (or even phone) is faster than our thought thus hindering comprehension and memorization. This is primary factor that is making pen and paper trend in tech and education circles right now.
Honestly speech as input is still extremely niche because it's slow and even with massive accuracy improvements still inaccurate.
2 reasons : first there are multiple speakers, second speech contains a lot of words that could be optimized away in a prompt but matter for courts. My voice prompts are so dirty and unclear compared to well thought, text ones

Fun fact: The average Linux kernel developer adds probably less than 1100 lines of code per person-year to the kernel. It's estimated 40,000,000 lines of code with over 40,000 person-years of work as input.
Mind you, I've actually tried some of these newfangled dictation tools. Most of them are a simple transcription -> llm cleaning pipeline that doesn't work nearly as well as they claim. You basically give up all control over the formatting/style. It's also useless where precision matters and you can't have random transcription errors lying around.
The companies behind it claim insanse things like a 10x speedup in wpm you can output. I tried it and it was.. slower.
Part of the problem is me ig. Talking has always required effort for me, which seems to confuse other people. But when I'm dictating to one of these, I'm going slower (because talking clearly is hard) and I'm actively dumber (because talking takes brainpower).
That said, I did find them useful for when I can't type/dirty hands/being lazy.
But there's no need to pay an AI company $20/month for that. I run a model locally, get full privacy and no cost beyond a bit of battery
From what Ive heard Opencode, for agentic coding, is great, and I'd maybe try Gemma 4 (googles open weights model - permissive Apache 2.0 licensed) locally if I was so inclined. The size should be great for consumer hardware.
That's three before the coffee is done. They likely have way more updates. And way, way more bug fixes. Then again they likely vibecode the bug fixes, so I doubt anything actually gets fixed.

There's an obvious step down the line to make public education illegal. They'll still need worker drones to be able to operate computers to a certain extent, though. The full chatbot replacement fell through, so they're getting a little desperate.

As an ESL speaker, I don't entirely trust speech recognition, because it is wonky with all of our weird foreign accents (much like it's wonky with all of the fine native accents, go figure).
Just keep that in mind when this stuff inevitably gets outsourced to... wherever.
Oh and if you ship several updates in a single morning, something is very wrong. Where are the testers? Where's the review? Don't say they're even less present than usual?

I uploaded my first video to Peertube earlier this year and it got the captions 100% correct iirc and this was just me filming someone at a trade show on my phone. Freaking Peertube has better speech recognition than google.
My company did a voice transcription demo for copilot to show off how it could take meeting notes for teams. The guy doing the demo called me and asked me to talk about my pets on the meeting. Every time I said "pounds" to describe the weight of some of my rabbits, it put out "£" instead.
NDAs and all that, plus my own anonymity, I wouldn't speak publicly about it.
What I can tell you is that just about every business we talk to is curious about implementing AI at one or more levels of their operations. We don't usually have to bring it up.

It's absurdly hilarious how many "good practices" the LLM assistance wave has ushered (back) in, from proper code comments and documentation, to the notion that being able to think out loud without distracting your coworkers might actually be productive.
Is that back in again? At my last job, the guy doing code review on our project wrote a script to automatically remove all comments, because he believed that any comments at all were a "code smell". It was annoying as hell because my responsibility was making sure the code passed accessibility testing (VoiceOver on iOS). I would make the necessary changes and include comments explaining the why (VoiceOver is wonky as hell and sometimes you have to do weird stuff to get it to work properly); his script would remove the comments and the other developers would do the same damn things that had broken accessibility in the first place. Over and over again.
Fortunately, the app never went into production and everybody was laid off.
I can't think of anything I'd want less. I use speech-to-text for one and a half things: telling my partner that I'm beginning to drive home and I used to set timers but don't anymore. Formatting code would be impossibly unproductive.
Why do these people think they will be the employable ones? If AI is so smart, why would I need an expensive employee to prompt it, who hasn't done anything but prompt AI for years and thus has proven that he is unable to do the work himself?
If I buy into their psychosis that this thing is going to automate away actual people, surely it follows that it's going to reach a point where the CEO just prompts his AI agents in the morning and leaves to play golf, no need for employees at all.
That's the mask for huffing copium, while not only AI actually pulling them back, but also turned their quadruple nine uptime into 80% on a good day, made the code harder to debug, and having to stay in for unpaid overtime to compensate for the mess firing half the team caused.

For me they are roughly on par with each other when accounting for stutter and autocorrect/ me being stupid and mixing up spelling styles. Regardless voice recognition software almost always shits the bed with my accent eventually since it gets thicker the longer I talk, it doesn't like my fucked up mix of American brogue, old arkansaner, and standard southern Californian even got a bit of German Minnesota mixed in.

I sometimes can type faster than I normally speak, but that depends on the keyboard (needs something without a membrane sensing apparatus (not rubber domes) for it to work), and I sometimes can type faster than I could think clearly, which can be detrimental to the quality of output. But hey, at a company, they could use it as a metric.

My office's open floors have a thorough setup of noise dampening elements. The floor is some fancy carpet, the ceiling lined with some kind of foam elements, each desk has a backing made of that stuff too, and it works fairly well to keep the noise level manageable even when five people around me are in calls (which, given they're second level support, happens fairly often). Our headset have ANC and some fancy built in voice isolation system, so it's not even a bother for people on the other end.
Sure, it's not cheap, but it's neither as isolating as cubicles nor some dystopian bullshit like this. There are solutions if you're willing to spend on them (and after making a show of leading by example, our boss somehow got very willing to spend that money...)

You might be underestimating how fast people working in tech type. Actual issue studied today in comprehension is the fact that keyboard typing (or even phone) is faster than our thought thus hindering comprehension and memorization. This is primary factor that is making pen and paper trend in tech and education circles right now.
Honestly speech as input is still extremely niche because it's slow and even with massive accuracy improvements still inaccurate.

Mind you, I've actually tried some of these newfangled dictation tools. Most of them are a simple transcription -> llm cleaning pipeline that doesn't work nearly as well as they claim. You basically give up all control over the formatting/style. It's also useless where precision matters and you can't have random transcription errors lying around.
The companies behind it claim insanse things like a 10x speedup in wpm you can output. I tried it and it was.. slower.
Part of the problem is me ig. Talking has always required effort for me, which seems to confuse other people. But when I'm dictating to one of these, I'm going slower (because talking clearly is hard) and I'm actively dumber (because talking takes brainpower).
That said, I did find them useful for when I can't type/dirty hands/being lazy.
But there's no need to pay an AI company $20/month for that. I run a model locally, get full privacy and no cost beyond a bit of battery

As an ESL speaker, I don't entirely trust speech recognition, because it is wonky with all of our weird foreign accents (much like it's wonky with all of the fine native accents, go figure).
Just keep that in mind when this stuff inevitably gets outsourced to... wherever.
Oh and if you ship several updates in a single morning, something is very wrong. Where are the testers? Where's the review? Don't say they're even less present than usual?

Just look at how crap Google's autosubtitling is on YouTube.
I uploaded my first video to Peertube earlier this year and it got the captions 100% correct iirc and this was just me filming someone at a trade show on my phone. Freaking Peertube has better speech recognition than google.

My company did a voice transcription demo for copilot to show off how it could take meeting notes for teams. The guy doing the demo called me and asked me to talk about my pets on the meeting. Every time I said "pounds" to describe the weight of some of my rabbits, it put out "£" instead.
I don't think the client bought it.

What I can tell you is that just about every business we talk to is curious about implementing AI at one or more levels of their operations. We don't usually have to bring it up.

It's absurdly hilarious how many "good practices" the LLM assistance wave has ushered (back) in, from proper code comments and documentation, to the notion that being able to think out loud without distracting your coworkers might actually be productive.

Is that back in again? At my last job, the guy doing code review on our project wrote a script to automatically remove all comments, because he believed that any comments at all were a "code smell". It was annoying as hell because my responsibility was making sure the code passed accessibility testing (VoiceOver on iOS). I would make the necessary changes and include comments explaining the why (VoiceOver is wonky as hell and sometimes you have to do weird stuff to get it to work properly); his script would remove the comments and the other developers would do the same damn things that had broken accessibility in the first place. Over and over again.
Fortunately, the app never went into production and everybody was laid off.

I can't think of anything I'd want less. I use speech-to-text for one and a half things: telling my partner that I'm beginning to drive home and I used to set timers but don't anymore. Formatting code would be impossibly unproductive.

Why do these people think they will be the employable ones? If AI is so smart, why would I need an expensive employee to prompt it, who hasn't done anything but prompt AI for years and thus has proven that he is unable to do the work himself?
If I buy into their psychosis that this thing is going to automate away actual people, surely it follows that it's going to reach a point where the CEO just prompts his AI agents in the morning and leaves to play golf, no need for employees at all.
