Other kind of neurodivergence and I not only battle with how unjust this all is, but also with how little it makes sense. Personal gain is usually such a short-sighted goal and the things they currently do (your guys in the US but here in Germany too) are objectively so stupid that they're likely nullifying a lot of the personal gain within the next years.

It sometimes feels like being in the middle of a horde of suicidal lemmings, running towards the cliff and though seeing it, I can't get out. And the majority of people around us is still fine with this..

Strider@lemmy.world · 26 pts · 25d (4 replies)

Absolutely! It's the daily struggle of seeing people not only hurt others but also themselves for no reason but stupidity at all! And those who do so for supposed short term gain which is none at all on closer inspection.

Humanity does not have any swarm intelligence like at all. It's so depressing.

Actually I was going on and writing more on the state of the world regarding this and how it's self made and we could take it back but eh..

timmy_dean_sausage@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 25d (1 reply)

I think humanity has plenty of swarm intelligence. We just don't match it with the appropriate amount of wisdom to temper it. We're a bunch of developmentally imbalanced animals pretending we're more evolved than we are, wasting our time competing for trivial things and reinforcing ancient delusions.. Which is probably why any aliens that would be aware of us wouldn't want to visit. I wouldn't, and I'm no better than the rest of us. We collectively suck.

A small amount of individuals are cool though. So, at least there's that.

Remember that the lemmings were pushed by the filmmaker. If you want to get out you have to stop the filmmaker, not the other lemmings.

Another fine "educational" Disney film for kids from the 1960s if I'm remembering correctly. It's incredible how some guy just up and decided to send a horde of animals to a brutal death for entertainment value was par for course.

Anyways, Disney can go fuck itself...

hoshikarakitaridia@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 25d

You are completely right and I feel the exact same. However, one thing I am certain of now is that the majority is not fine with this. There's many different ideas about how to do it, but a strong majority recognizes change is inevitable and necessary to prevent a further political slip.

Maybe I'm too positive but political theory and statistics has taught me time and time again how many quirks there are in different democracies that dilute the will of the majority and push some very fringe opinions. And it's just a matter of time until the democratic system realigns with the true will of the people. Unfortunately either by gradual actual change, or by complete destruction and rebuilding. But that's usually how democracies evolve.

Lemmings don't do mass suicide, by the way, that is a complete fake by Disney that got widely repeated. The lemmings they show in those scenes aren't even native to that region. Source, for example: https://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=wildlifenews.view_article&articles_id=56

More like being on a train headed for that cliff and the brake room is guarded by a squad of toughs, and everyone on the train has been socially conditioned to stigmatize any mention of braking or slowing down, and they will likely team up to try to stop you before you even get close enough to the brake room for the toughs to even threaten you (but if you do get that far, they'll kick the shit out of you all the same).

It's like it's taboo to even mention hitting the brakes, and people will treat you like a social contagion and a danger to society if you bring it up

socsa@piefed.social · 2 pts · 24d

In the context of feudalism, monarchy and the late "Middle Ages" in Europe, liberal democracy is one of the most revolutionary things ever to happen to Humans, and the US led the way in reducing that ideology to practice.

From there, the admirable stuff is largely the framework for self reflection the system creates, though the US has not always led the way in that sense compared to its peers. No society is perfect, and a major differentiator between empires is how the people handle reflection of past sins. This is why being a progressive in the US is so fucking tedious - because the legacy and the procedures for doing better are there. They are well known and they aren't that complicated. But then there's this whole contingent of reactionary assholes who are neither students of history or philosophy, resting on imagined laurels to constantly oppose and then undo what progress we are able to make.

Shellofbiomatter@lemmus.org · 27 pts · 25d (5 replies)

I used the "cover your ears and sing" tactic. Basically turning off news and retreating into my own little bubble and just trying to maintain that in functional order as this is the only thing i can have at least some control over.

Beyond major events that seep through regardless, i have no idea whats going on. Which is kinda bad now that I'm on lemmy as this place doesn't have my countries specific sub/instance so i have no idea what's going on in my own country as well, but at the same time i really don't want to be constantly blasted with the worst shit happening across the world. I already have issues with being too negative and cynical.

I doubt that human brain, NT or ND, has evolved to keep up with modern news cycle that collects worst news across the world and just blast you 24/7 with it.

It's like the modern news cycle is designed to make a person feel bad by showing them things they can do almost nothing about, while hiding things close by that they might have at least some effect over.

Tibi@discuss.tchncs.de · 11 pts · 25d (3 replies)

But that Ignorance is how boomers got us into this mess, no? And ignoring issues because you can't do anything about them is what the elites want you to do, no?

Yes I am doing the same currently, but I feel like I lost to the system. I still have a bit of hope that something will change soon, but what if it doesn't? And will it change without me? Every other thing I have to do myself or it just won't happen, why would politics be different?

Shellofbiomatter@lemmus.org · 3 pts · 25d

Yeah I'm fully aware it's not the best approach, but it does help in limiting the damage and having enough willpower/energy to do something when there's a slight chance of actually effecting some change. Otherwise just the scale of it will grind down any single individual and spit out a burned up husk.

So cant completely turn off everything, but at least limit it significantly. Yes there are people suffering in Africa or middle East or south America or north America or even Europe or Asia, but there isn't much i can do about it and being constantly bombarded with overwhelming amount of negative information just feeds the helplessness feeling and erodes away the will to do anything. Which is kinda crucial when there is actually something that can be done.

Bigger events will seep through the filter anyway and generally that's good enough to get the rough idea of what's happening. Aka like war in Iran started up again, but at the same time theres no point to start looking up videos of how many kids got blown up this time or any more specifics about it. Though once every 2-4 years or local equivalent of election cycle kinda have to crawl out under the rock to see where things have been heading and who might be able to slightly nudge towards the opposite direction.

Of course one can become more active even by just organizing local rallies or finding like minded individuals around themselves, but once again it has a limited effect and works just on a local sacle, it will not have any immediate effect what's happening on the other side of the planet or becoming Luigi, but that does require opportune moment and nothing to lose/no one depending on you.

Basically limiting information flow and choosing which battles to fight, instead of getting overwhelmed with the sheer amount of negative information and trying to fight all the battles all the time and subsequently completely burning out.

They've done everything they can to divide us against eachother, on race, on what brands we wear, what teams we cheer for, what geopolitical land we happen to be on top of, the color of our skin, and the "class" of jobs we hold... To name a few.

The problem is that many people idolize the ultra wealthy, and nobody ever got wealthy by helping their neighbor. Those "celebrities" have long since stopped caring about who they stood on the backs of and exploited to gain their wealth. They don't care about you. They won't help you when you fall. They don't want you to be supportive of your neighbor. They want you to be aggressively individualistic to the point of being "us vs them" where "us" is more of "me" and "them" is anyone who isn't me.

It's never that way. It should never be that way. United we stand.

There's this asshole parking in a complete no parking street in a pretty dangerous spot every day for a week now and I've reported it to the correct public channel for such nuisances daily. I'm so frickin annoyed by it and my partner just doesn't get it.

JasonDJ@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 23d (1 reply)

See, I'm generally against calling the correct public authorities for shit like that, because in this day and age it'll probably end with the asshole getting deported or shot.

And as much as I hate people who park in dangerous spots, I don't think that's deserved.

There was this giant box truck that used to always park in a no-parking spot (on the shoulder of the street) right next to the exit from my kids daycare. As a result it was a leap of faith pulling out, every single day, because you couldn't see shit around it.

This was right around the corner from the police station, so I must assume they've seen it and it's probably one of theirs.

4shtonButcher@discuss.tchncs.de · 2 pts · 23d

Well, luckily I live in a civilized country where people getting shot is super rare. And I think serious/repeated parking fines make it harder to apply for citizenship but won't get anyone deported.

I am actually unsure whether you are trying to say "we fuck everyone over so of course someone might hate us enough to do this" because while that's true, the official version seems way less likely than a false flag "catalyzing event" to bring about a new world order.

whoisearth@lemmy.ca · 6 pts · 25d (3 replies)

I was referring to the former. The MSM was fully in the camp of surprise. "How could this happen to America?" When if you haven't had your head in the sand the correct response would have been "damn it took this long?"

We're on the same page but I still believe the official story has way more holes in it than a swiss cheese, so I look at who benefitted the most. And that tells me the military industrial complex orchestrated those mass murders and the following wars.

EchoCranium@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 24d (1 reply)

9/11 happened here because our government has spent over a century interfering and intentionally destroying the stability of other nations. In Central America, South America, the Middle East, and parts of Asia, pretty much every country within those regions has been damaged by our imposing sanctions or regime change. Yes, it's astounding that it took so long for someone to find a way to strike back at us here at home, and not that it finally happened.

Don't attribute to conspiracy theories what comes down to greed and sociopathy. People profited off the tragedy not because they performed some clandestine bullshit, but because they were always ready to take advantage of just such a situation. The ghouls will never let a good tragedy go to waste.

raspberriesareyummy@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 24d

What happened was - even by the official version - a conspiracy in the very sense of the word. The question that wasn't sufficiently answered is who conspired with whom to bring about the events.

Don’t attribute to conspiracy theories what comes down to greed and sociopathy.

I wasn't. I am just pretty sure that greed and sociopathy go a lot further than you might be willing to imagine.

People profited off the tragedy not because they performed some clandestine bullshit, but because they were always ready to take advantage of just such a situation.

That "clandestine bullshit" has been proposed in the former US administrations in all seriousness way before, see Operation Northwoods. I don't have a crystal ball to know for sure what happened, but I have zero reason to believe the official version that is full of holes, and think following the money gets you much closer to the truth. And the military industrial complex is full of people who make their whole living off the business of murdering people. Do you really think those would bat an eye at the thought of killing a few thousand americans if it secured their profits for the next decades?

My coping mechanism: when I feel that I am going to be overwhelmed by bad news or the cruelty for the sake of it.

  1. Is this something I can influence in a way or another? The answer is typically no (otherwise I would have already worked on addressing)
  2. Spending emotional energies on this would change anything for this instance? The answer is always no
  3. If I keep on wasting emotional energies on this topic that I can’t change, will I have the energies for having an impact on things I can have an impact on?

This makes me realise that the best I can do for the system is, sadly, ignore the problem. Not because I don’t care but for a strategic effort in doing what I can

I know plenty of people who use that logic to avoid feeling emotions about the state of the world, but then they never do anything to actually help the state of the world. Why is this in the autism community when it’s about ADHD?

I agree with the post as someone with ADHD. When I’m in the shower, I listen to NPR and Apple News. I’ve had times where I break down in tears over something so tiny either sweet or awful. It’s exhausting sometimes.

SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 3 pts · 24d (4 replies)

No no no no, don't do that. Don't listen to anything more than maybe music in the shower. You desperately need to not do that. Seriously. I don't know if you need to, to regulate or whatnot, but if you don't need to, please consider giving your nervous system that time and space.

Flames5123@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 24d (3 replies)

I enjoy listening to NPR and Apple News when getting ready. It’s not every day, and it keeps me minimally informed. The tearing up doesn’t happen that often. I was just providing an anecdote.

SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 4 pts · 24d (2 replies)

That's good that it doesn't happen every time, but I'm speaking more of specifically filling what is otherwise a really important introspective time that lets your brain sort of decompress and relax and be free, and tethers it to others' thoughts and words. We already fill all of our lives with stimulation and attention stealing algorithms and awful bullshit, we need to do what we can to reclaim our own abilities to self stabilize, and to do that, I think it's important to have times of relaxation where we're free to have our own thoughts. It's very possible I'm projecting, but on the off chance I'm not, I seriously encourage you to try to be alone with your thoughts more often, and the shower, at least to me, is kind of a sacred time and space to breathe deeply and calmly and let our nervous systems recover. You don't get that when you're filling that time and space with, no offense and not pertaining to your taste, but, essentially, garbage. That just isn't a good trade at all, in my opinion.

Flames5123@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 23d (1 reply)

In the shower I like noise and whatnot and am able to still have a pretty relaxing time. Plus NPR is just a few minutes and just facts.

I’m lucky I get to walk and take public transit to/from work, so that’s my quiet time. Even if I’m on the phone doing my daily gatcha game or scrolling lemmy, I still get moments of quiet and introspection. I was diagnosed with depression last year, and I think it was a big part of just dopamine burnout with ADHD and the news cycle, but I’m doing much better on medication, and it’s allowed me to step back and quiet my thoughts a little more too. :)

Everyone is different, but thanks for being concerned for your neighbor lemmy user and taking the time to explain!

AuAHD with bi-polar. I got angry enough with a letter that the fbi came out and inspected my home, worried I was hoarding weapons.

They know how angry we are. There is a reason some are doing everything they can to either double down with thier fascist identity or are jumping ship.

I made it clear to them, if they think I'm MAD there are people out there who will go beyond words.

I.. Strangely feel more free. Now that I know for certain I'm being watched, I kinda lost fear of it. Not because they are right, but because I know I wasted thier time and that I have the ability to talk the fbi down from arresting me.. It's so strange.

But I also know, when these awful people get desperate, I'm on thier list and high up it.

I've been walking around my house, looking for cover spots with the energy of a counter strike player analyzing a map for any tactical advantage.

Planning on what to do when they try rounding me up.

When I'm not planing for the downfall of America, I watch our world like one watches a hyper slow mo crash of a train flying off the tracks into low income but surprisingly diverse neighborhood full of orphans and the train is full of ignorant fat white people who only now look the tiniest bit scared as the now realize that the train is crashing despite countless warning signs. And... All I can do is watch.. I can't save a soul. And as this train wreck ends, for some reason I know the survivors that were on the train are some how still going to blame the low income neighborhood.

And some how.. I'm supposed stay alive and fight this evil.. When all I see is people hopelessly cling to the idea that we can all have peace if we just talk it out. When I know it will take death, of some kind to actually fix it. No matter what.

Words are becoming meaningless, promises empty, and our fates at the whim of entropy and what some rich people feel that day..

I some how don't "give up." I some how I still get up, some how I still take my meds and stay mostly sober. Mostly for the two cats in my care that have been handling the collapse of the world with a grace and calmness only the monks on mountains know.

I also get up for husband's older sister's family, who, despite all this and having to put up with a system that favors killing good men, are raising 1 AuAHD kid, two infants who may also have it. And the older sister's husband is still paying child support to make things right with his ex wife and still greatly cares for his 2 kids birthed by the ex wife, despite the ex wife ignoring the very clearly autistic kid and shunning the other kid for not being lady enough.

I wake up for my cousin who is Rasing a severely autistic daughter who is non verbal, incontinent, 12 year old in the budget of 30 hour week at Arby's as shift manager (young adult baby sitter), while she keeps the sanity of failed unemployed musician of a husband who's mental health and physical health is declining rapidly due to onslaught of fake news and propaganda slamming through the Ai slop that is tiktok and Instagram reels. All the while she has to live with her husband's family on one room because the husband doesn't trust any government assitance programs.

I wake up for my upper middle class retired grandmother who is hemmoraging money to make sure I and my cousin don't die and are cared for. All the while her friends and family are dropping like flies in a bug bombed house. Either as the results of long term covid or old age. She is last one.

All the while I still grieve the loss of mother who died single because men took advantage of her emotions and because my biological dad died 2 weeks before my mom learned she was pregnant with me.

For the love of humanity and all that is good in this world, do not give up, do not make my families sacrifices in vain.

I recently also got diagnosed with fibromyalgia, I can't do anything violent let alone productive even if I wanted to, my body isn't strong enough.

Please, do everything you can to make a better world for us all.

Honestly just been kinda numb for a long time now. It's going to suck when my brain actually starts processing things again, but, for now, I'm a human robot level of functional.

Dissociation (numbness) is a trauma response.

MystikIncarnate@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 23d

I've just been continually dissociated since COVID started.

A-hah.

Ha!, even. Hahahahahahahaahahahaah!

Nah, it was hard back when it was 9/11 being used as an excuse. These days? Sanity is overrated. XD

I just got on ADHD meds and it's making it harder to ignore the world being on fire. I'm more focused on it and I'm going to have a nervous breakdown.

SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org · 6 pts · 24d

That sounds like an adequate reaction to the state of things to be fair.

Baggie@lemmy.zip · 5 pts · 24d (6 replies)

I had the exact same issue. You might have to practice being a little selfish.

Not to others in your life, but acquiring the ability to turn off your brain to the woes of the entire world. It feels bad, awful even, to ignore the suffering of others, but it's a necessity to cope with how much the modern world will jam down your throat if you let it.

Taking time away from news, letting yourself not ruminate about it, giving yourself that mental space, it all means that when you're in a position to do the good that you can, you have the resources to act on that good.

❤️

SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 4 pts · 24d (1 reply)

Feels like a bad plan. Like bottling or setting yourself up for bad shit, later. At least it would be, for me.

Baggie@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 24d

I'm not sure what you mean? Relinquishing some perception over things you can't control in any way seems pretty straightforward. I'm not saying be entirely ignorant, but there's a healthier balance than subjecting yourself to misery 24/7.

Malyca@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 24d (3 replies)

I've been trying. Aforementioned medication is helping executive function, so I've taken to cleaning for 12 hours a day. Sure, it's mostly pointless work, but it's keeping my brain off the news for the majority of the day :)

Baggie@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 24d (2 replies)

Are you new to this medication? ADHD meds can be a lot starting out.

Malyca@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 24d (1 reply)

Yeah it's a bit crazy, just going into month 2 now.

Baggie@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 22d

Good luck, it should get a bit easier as time goes on. If not, make sure to talk to your doctor about it. Getting medication right can be a pain, but you don't have to settle for something that gets in the way of a good life!

IPeaceInYourFace@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 24d

You can choose where you place your attention.

But only when you learn to control it.

Meditate, and you can see the beauty in the world.

foodandart@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 24d (1 reply)

Best thing to do for your sanity is unplug from the news for most of the day.

I've kicked all of the political stuff right in the head, and most of my day is listening to my huge music collection or a youtube music channel like BGM while I work.

(I didn't even pay attentiuon to Trump's comments or anything at the Correspondents Dinner the other day.. Just don't give a shit about that crap anymore. I figure he probably went off ranting like a demented old fart and leave it at that. Not interested..)

The news WILL make you crazy, and the thing is, life goes on just fine when you aren't oversaturated by it.

Remember, the news industry - corporate media - all of it - has decades of experience in keeping listeners/vewers/readers hooked and coming back, even if it is toxic.

You know how bad shit's gonna be with the current crop of sociopathic fucks in Washington DC, so you don't need to confirm it. Just find something else to listen/watch/read that is informative, educational and fun.

I always thought it's ODD, that's usually present in people with ADHD, and not actual ADHD.

Or is that something else?

JasonDJ@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 23d

Oppositional Defiant Disorder, I think, is very different with Justice Sensitivity.

Still very often correlated with ADHD. So are a bunch of other neurodivergencies. Autism, a plethora of eating disorders, nymphomania/satyriasis (of course, anxiety and depression are also common, and SSRI's take care of that...), and addiction probably the most common.

Rooster326@programming.dev · 2 pts · 24d (1 reply)

Oppositional Defiance Disorder?

I mean it mostly only occurs in children and it is a controversial diagnosis. Hard to separate poor parenting skills from it.

JasonDJ@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 23d

Idk man comparing my two kids, both on opposite ends of ADHD (one hyperactive/compulsive, one inattentive)...the hyperactive one is quite ODD and the inattentive one, aside from the ADHD-I tendencies, is probably one of the best behaved kids in the world.

Though I may be a bit biased.

I don't think it's nurture. I think ODD has a direct correlation to compulsive behaviors in ADHD-H/C kids. It's probably something they eventually (hopefully, god willing) grow out of...but also something that would probably turn into other dangerous/compulsive behaviors I'd have to keep an eye out for (like hypersexuality or addiction).

That kid just turned seven and I'm already having nightmares of being a granddad in less than 10 years.

UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 24d

There's a lot of hot takes on this forum that try to correlate neurodivergence with some kind of moral compass.

It neglects how ideas like justice are social constructs and cultural touchstones, not universal truths and absolutes.

What's being described is a dissonance between espoused legal/moral standards and lived ones. But which is "correct"? ADHD doesn't give you any clarity one way or another.

The corporate bullshit was bad enough, but now with the rise of fascism, I'm constantly on the edge of a complete fucking breakdown.

I really really want to say fuck it and go become a hermit in the woods even if it means I die of exposure or malnutrition.

I'm sorry, maybe its just my bad mood, but is this post insinuating that having empathy and wanting justice are "autistic quirks?"

Shouldn't we all be feeling like things are unjust, or is it 'neurotypical' to be a heartless, selfish human being :(

Lexam@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 22d

One symptom of Autism is an "over developed" sense of justice. This can cause issues when we view a situation as "unfair"

The Boss gave John the day off, but not Dave even though they both finished the project early.

Neurotypical Dave, may grumble and complain to his friends. But he's not going to tell the boss he quits because he needs his job.

Autistic Dave however, may have a meltdown and walk off the job. Autistic Dave knows he needs the job, but now since he's having a meltdown due to the situation, he's not as in control of his current emotions as Neurotypical Dave is.

Later on Autistic Dave will most likely calm down but the damage has already been done.

Holy cow this one hits home.

brucethemoose@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 23d

I’m not sure the first point is universal.

I’m a strong INTP, especially on the “judging” vs “perceiving” dimension. And boy, do I have AuADD. It’s wrecking me. But I feel like I’m pretty flexible when it comes to my perception of justice.

HopeOfTheGunblade@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 1 pts · 25d

Yeah, these ones aren't okay, but at least these ones are breaking in ways that are still pretty workable.

agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 25d

Channeling it into doing something about the injustice. I'm pretty sure I've dialed in my analytical inclinations to recognize the scope of my influence without wallowing in helpless despair. It's a process.

"Don't be a feminist, advocate against child labour!" This is you.

But I have allowed you to distract me from my point: veganism brings with it tremendous personal growth and frees up cognitive overhead you didn't even know you were using. Living in a state of constant cognitive dissonance is devastating, especially for people with AuADHD. I'm not even talking about the effect veganism has on the world, I'm talking about the effect carnism has on oneself.

jahtnamas@slrpnk.net · -1 pts · 25d (6 replies)

no, it's just that you're being ableist and classist about it.

jerkface@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 24d

Making up shit about me ultimately won't get you anywhere. Please spare me the bullshit tropes; do your coping in private. I live on less than the worldwide median income (about 13k) in an area of unusually high cost-of-living, and I am disabled. Next you are going to try and erase all the indigenous vegans by telling me I'm being culturally insensitive. But poor and disabled vegans exist in every city of the world.

This is how you cope. You tell yourself lies. Try coping by telling yourself a little truth, and see how that goes.

jerkface@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 24d (4 replies)

But okay, lets say you are right. Lets say there are situations where people's disabilities and economic class make it impossible to avoid all animal products.

Veganism demands avoiding the exploitation of animals "as far as is practical and practicable". If you require an animal product for your health and you economize it as much as you can, that's still vegan. If you find yourself starving in a food desert and there is nothing without milk or lard in it, making mindful choices to minimize the harm you are doing is still vegan. Being poor, disabled, or inconveniently located is not a license to just consume mindlessly without concern for the consequences your actions have. It isn't an excuse to not even think about the cruelty and violence you commit.

jahtnamas@slrpnk.net · 2 pts · 24d (3 replies)

honestly all this did was just tell me how little agency i have in my current household because i have zero income, don't/can't drive and we're in such financial crisis because of a slipup with the matriarch's retirement that my grocery choices have to be approved.
