I went to read a few articles after seeing this post. They all cite "fans" criticizing "body-shaming" her for being "too thin". I don't think those people ever knew someone who had anorexia or how dangerous this is.
It can be deadly, but you can recover from it. I do not think you can ever be really cured of the mentality, but it is possible to get it under control.
Yeah a loved one of mine was hospitalized and institutionalized for it for a brief time years ago. They've since learned to control it and be generally pretty healthy in size.
I've got sympathy for her going through anorexia, but that doesn't really absolve her from being a generally kinda shitty person. She doesn't deserve anorexia but she's still just another rich asshole fuckin up the youth.
Don't particularly care, except for that she is essentially just promoting anorexia to her fanbase of young girls who don't know better, which is pretty fucked up because Ariana should know better.
The thing is, she most definitely doesn’t know better right now in the depths of anorexia. Anorexia warps your sense of reality and self, and it's also a competitive disorder (hence, the “flaunting” many people suffering from it do). I mean, in the music video, there’s a note that says “couldn’t hurt to lose a few pounds” while she looks like that, so she’s obviously not in her right mind. I blame her management, executives, team, family, and friends for enabling her.
If you watch the full video though she's obviously "opposed" to the critique she's getting from the judges (the note), as she goes full Carrie on them in the end. The other girls celebrate her for it. My takeaway is that the pressure put on women is the men's fault, and women want to be free of it.
And I'm guessing the contents of the notes are real comments she's gotten over the years, not self-written notes to her current self. I don't see how you can read it any other way than this video being about revenge and freedom.
That said, I agree she looks sick and needs to heal from all of the pressure put on her. Obviously it's affected her a great deal. But I can't help to read this video as a means to get there, like public therapy, sort of.
I watched it, and I just don’t buy this explanation when, in the same video, she’s purposely wearing stuff meant to accentuate her bones and figure. The “industry critique” aspect of the music video just falls flat. Someone on another platform said it better than I could: the fact that in a gore/horror-themed MV Ariana’s real-life body is the scariest part says it all. Ironically, I think the best “industry critique” is one she didn’t even mean, when she reads the innocuous note, “You bloom wherever you’re planted” (you become famous if, when, where, and how the ones at the top want you to).
So the video accentuates how thin she is, then shows her negative response to the group that told her to be thinner... that all sounds consistent with criticising that kind of commentary to me.
I'm not going to comment on how thin she is, but that explanation seems the most likely, else why would the note be in there at all?
No, it’s the fact that the video glamorizes how emaciated she is, which is incompatible with seeing “could lose a few pounds” as a negative, since she’s flaunting the end stage of being skinny. You can’t critique something you’re the personification of and trying to paint as normal. “Couldn’t hurt to lose a few pounds” is exactly the deadly lie anorexics tell themselves because of the delusional thinking fueled by their disorder.

Ariana Grande is a shitty and classist person, and she's dying.
It's baffling to see so many people, not even able to live paycheck to paycheck, foam at the mouth when it's correctly pointed out she's dangerously starving. Her dumbfuck cult of a fanbase are witnessing her commit suicide via ED, and scream at anyone pointing it out as "body shaming".
I mean, this is the same bitch who said she hates Americans because they're fat (something that correlates to poverty). She also has used her body to sell countless products to young impressionable girls who will never be able to achieve her body size without also engaging in starvation.
This isn't just a return to the "heroine chic" EDs of the early 2000s, this is going far past that. This is the "3 minutes from dying" chic. This will have dire consequences on young people's psyche for a whole generation.
I think she uses her starving body as a product to influence impressionable young women to idolize her body and aspire to try to be like her at the expense of their mental and physical health.

The fact that a whole team approved a video that's blatantly pro-ana content (body checking/bonespo) for a mainstream pop star with a young, female fanbase is disgusting. Eating disorders are socially contagious, but I guess all publicity is good publicity to them.
No argument form me, with the introduction of GLPs we have circled back to promoting anorexia to the next generation of young women.

eh looks the opposite to me. 2011 looks like a lot of white foundation or whatever tf it's called. after that she seems to have eased up on whitening herself. except 2021 obv.
Up to 2020 looks like becoming an adult and losing kid cheeks to me. I won't comment on 2021, because yikes (plus her makeup obscures her facial structure), and 2023 looks like she’s too thin or got work done. More recent pictures make it more obvious that she’s getting thinner and thinner though.
2018 was the red flag. She could be accused of masking as Hispanic before, but that could be explained by a change in diet and a summer tan. 2018 is the hard, The Emperor Has No Cloths moment where everyone knew something was wrong, but wouldn't say anything to her face about it.
Yeah, 2018 is fucked up and here likely indicates some sort of psychological issue, but there’s a long tradition of white people exploiting other people’s cultures for financial gain. It’s not an automatic red flag for mental illness for me in general.

She's an easily influenced influencer. Remember her licking doughnuts as a trend? She was with "friends" at the time.
Similar to Will Smith, she's a rich kid with a ton of insecurities and lots of bad acquaintances. She'll keep making mistakes because that kind of negativity leads your thoughts astray easily and you need something grounded to keep you going. I'm not sure she has that something to hold on to.

However, I don't think its rational to suggest Ariana, and every other major figure, isn't aware of what they're doing. She's made references to it in social media, at least one if her new songs, and always constantly puts emphasis on her exposed bones in front of every available camera.
Yeah it's so fucked up, sex with someone that skinny is straight up painful, their bones cause bruises on you, there's nothing sexy about banging a skeleton. Yet, these sick fuckers controlling the media want their stars like this, emaciated and fully under control.
On the other hand people pretend that being 5 foot 4 and 130lbs is some impossibly thin unrealistic goal when twenty years ago you'd have been called fat. It's definitely not fat, but it sure isn't thin either.
I don't get eating disorders (specifically the one where you want to look like a ghoul). Stuffing yourself makes sense to me, you wanna eat food and can't stop I guess, but not eating??? Like you enjoy starving?
The whole thing about eating disorders is that no part of it is about enjoyment. Generally they're psychological/other issues that ends up skewing how the person views and interacts with food on a fundamental level.

Social pressures. Yes, being hungry is uncomfortable and even can hurt, but if you ignore it long enough, it can sometimes become a bit more like background noise. I have always been a healthy weight, but my entire life I have had the paranoia of becoming fat. And so I am very accustomed to feeling hungry. When they started me a psych med that people can easily gain weight on, I started monitoring my weight more closely. Often, I go to bed with hunger pangs.
Quite frankly, I never understood how people are able to eat as much as I see them eat and still maintain a normal weight. I have always needed to eat less than others to maintain a healthy weight. My coworkers will eat 3 meals a day and be a healthy weight, but I have to eat 1 regular meal, 1 small meal, and maybe 1 small snack to stay a health weight. I'm guessing it's because I'm shorter so there is less mass at a healthy weight. Sucks.
Some people describe visual hallucinations as a component of body dysmorphia. Folks like this with serious eating disorders (like, going to kill themselves serious) are actually acting out of a delusion, not misinformed, rational thought.
Meaning you can't empathize? Lucky you, I guess. I had so much anxiety around eating for so long, and it's not unusual. Until I was 25, never put one piece of food in my mouth without thinking about the calories and how it would make me fat. I'm sure she looks in the mirror and still sees fat.
Yes more people have eating disorders in the other direction, and will eat when stressed. I have trouble wrapping my mind around that. It's been half my lifetime since I recovered but I still can't eat when stressed.
It's heartbreaking and eventually fatal if you keep restricting. Skinny is not automatically unhealthy, body types do differ.
There's plenty of pressure on women to be small, and when your life is out of control, one thing you can control is eating. It is oddly easy to fall into disordered territory.

Which are very good medicines used successfully to fight obesity. Let's not blame the medication here. They however should be used by people who are actually struggling with obesity and not already fit people who want to lose weight for esthetic reasons. And why a doctor would ever prescribe them to someone who is clearly already under weight and possibly struggling with an eating disorder is beyond me.
Also I don't believe she is using any of those kinds of drugs. These kinds of eating disorders are mental health issues and have been recognized as such for decades. People have been suffering from this kind of thing long before weight loss medication became a reality. You don't need your body to tell you not to eat if your mind already does so.

i feel like you're making assumptions here that i said her value only comes from her beauty. i think beauty adds to value but it's not the only thing that matters for women OR men either for that matter. she clearly is going through the surgeries and anorexia because she cares about her appearance, so why is stating she still looks fine and isn't ugly a bad thing? imo beauty does give you some value at least in a superficial sense. we aren't robots, we have attraction to things and a positive attraction is a positive value.
For a lot of people with eating disorders any comment about their appearance and attractiveness will only fuel the eating disorder. If they get lots of compliments when they're dangerously skinny then they'll obviously conclude "this is good I need to be skinny/skinnier." However, when people say things like you did like "they were cuter before" it almost always spirals the person into trying to "fix" their appearance even more
You have to remember that unfortunately people with eating disorders do not see themselves objectively and they often are not thinking straight bc their body is struggling to survive. So even if you're trying to say something positive, that's not necessarily going to be the effect it has on the person. This is why it's important to generally center the discussion around having a healthy lifestyle rather than appearance (actually being healthy, not when people use the word "healthy" to disparage anyone bigger than a size 2)
Also additional note that isn't necessarily to do with this conversation, but people with eating disorders will often have their weight fluctuate drastically. Bc their eating habits are so inconsistent, their bodies get used to holding onto as much as they can, so it's common for people with eating disorders to rapidly gain weight and then rapidly lose it, in a cycle. And of course, when they lose the weight people will compliment them usually, thus fueling the eating disorder. This is why it's generally best to never comment on someone's weight unless you know them really well and they've specifically been talking about losing weight in a healthy way. (And even then the focus should be on the benefits of the change like "you seems so much more energetic now/you look more comfortable in yourself" rather than their weight directly)

But I think his comments heavily imply that her beauty is the most important value to her (maybe he means it from a business perspective and then he might not be wrong... sadly).

If you feel and think differently to that, reflect on how you communicate your thoughts. I doubt you would want to tell e.g. a close female friend something that she would understand like that.
Your whole statement circles around the idea that while you agree that she is less healthy, she is still pretty and consequently, you think she will be fine. And that might be a understandable (while sad) perspective from a business perspective but you joined a conversation about her health. By moving the conversation away from her health towards her beauty (a very subjective matter, which is especially important in situation), you are communicating that you believe that a focus on her beauty is relevant.
Now i understand that you might be reacting to other people's comments and you feel like they called her ugly and you don't think she is. But instead of stating that, e.g. by saying "while it seems like she is less healthy right now, let's not call her ugly, that is just mean. And personally, i still think she is pretty" but by saying things that imply that her value is in her matching your aesthetic sense.
I want to assume that your heart is in the right but your words are not.

It's baffling to see so many people, not even able to live paycheck to paycheck, foam at the mouth when it's correctly pointed out she's dangerously starving. Her dumbfuck cult of a fanbase are witnessing her commit suicide via ED, and scream at anyone pointing it out as "body shaming".
I mean, this is the same bitch who said she hates Americans because they're fat (something that correlates to poverty). She also has used her body to sell countless products to young impressionable girls who will never be able to achieve her body size without also engaging in starvation.
This isn't just a return to the "heroine chic" EDs of the early 2000s, this is going far past that. This is the "3 minutes from dying" chic. This will have dire consequences on young people's psyche for a whole generation.

The fact that a whole team approved a video that's blatantly pro-ana content (body checking/bonespo) for a mainstream pop star with a young, female fanbase is disgusting. Up to 2020 looks like becoming an adult and losing kid cheeks to me. I won't comment on 2021, because yikes (plus her makeup obscures her facial structure), and 2023 looks like she’s too thin or got work done. More recent pictures make it more obvious that she’s getting thinner and thinner though.

Similar to Will Smith, she's a rich kid with a ton of insecurities and lots of bad acquaintances. She'll keep making mistakes because that kind of negativity leads your thoughts astray easily and you need something grounded to keep you going. I'm not sure she has that something to hold on to.

Global eating disorder prevalence increased from 3.5% to 7.8% between 2000 and 2018.
I genuinely believe its worse now than 2018, what with the mass marketing of GLP1 (or similar medicine), and the rise in popularity of the Looksmaxxing bullshit.
The truth is, billion-dollar corporations go out of their way to brainwash the masses that these body types, that are entirely unachievable for the hyper-majority of the population, are THE sex standard. They use this to convince impressionable and desperate people alike to buy buy buy to try to look like this.
The celebrities/models who profit off of it like Ariana Grande are just as guilty. People wanna talk about how EDs warp people's minds. However, I don't think its rational to suggest Ariana, and every other major figure, isn't aware of what they're doing. She's made references to it in social media, at least one if her new songs, and always constantly puts emphasis on her exposed bones in front of every available camera.

making them hate themselves for eating to the point of detriment. I understood that ozempic, the weight loss drug, is also widely used, which could be additional peer pressure.
These people are constantly scrutinised under a microscope, it's a lot to handle.

Social pressures. Yes, being hungry is uncomfortable and even can hurt, but if you ignore it long enough, it can sometimes become a bit more like background noise. I have always been a healthy weight, but my entire life I have had the paranoia of becoming fat. And so I am very accustomed to feeling hungry. When they started me a psych med that people can easily gain weight on, I started monitoring my weight more closely. Often, I go to bed with hunger pangs.
Quite frankly, I never understood how people are able to eat as much as I see them eat and still maintain a normal weight. I have always needed to eat less than others to maintain a healthy weight. My coworkers will eat 3 meals a day and be a healthy weight, but I have to eat 1 regular meal, 1 small meal, and maybe 1 small snack to stay a health weight. I'm guessing it's because I'm shorter so there is less mass at a healthy weight. Sucks.

Meaning you can't empathize? Lucky you, I guess. I had so much anxiety around eating for so long, and it's not unusual. Until I was 25, never put one piece of food in my mouth without thinking about the calories and how it would make me fat. I'm sure she looks in the mirror and still sees fat.
Yes more people have eating disorders in the other direction, and will eat when stressed. I have trouble wrapping my mind around that. It's been half my lifetime since I recovered but I still can't eat when stressed.
It's heartbreaking and eventually fatal if you keep restricting. Skinny is not automatically unhealthy, body types do differ.
There's plenty of pressure on women to be small, and when your life is out of control, one thing you can control is eating. It is oddly easy to fall into disordered territory.

Which are very good medicines used successfully to fight obesity. Let's not blame the medication here. They however should be used by people who are actually struggling with obesity and not already fit people who want to lose weight for esthetic reasons. And why a doctor would ever prescribe them to someone who is clearly already under weight and possibly struggling with an eating disorder is beyond me.
Also I don't believe she is using any of those kinds of drugs. These kinds of eating disorders are mental health issues and have been recognized as such for decades. People have been suffering from this kind of thing long before weight loss medication became a reality. You don't need your body to tell you not to eat if your mind already does so.

i mean YES, she is anorexic and probably has an eating disorder. she's still cute though, just not as cute as she was before. i think a lot of it has to do with how celebrities that were beautiful dont come to terms and deal well with aging, so they try to get surgeries and go anorexic and shit like that trying to look 20 when they're 35. they need to let go.

What a strange thing to say as a reaction to someone expressing worries about someone else's health. "She might be unhealthy but she is still cute in my eyes, which is all that matters." That is how it sounds.

didn't say that's all that matters. just wanted to point out she wasn't hideous. i feel like people are reacting like she's ugly now when she's not. if she were reading this i'd want to reassure her that she's still got beauty and she might be unhealthy now and it's affecting her appearance but it isn't game over for her, she's still attractive and she can fix this and still be healthier and better looking. like it isn't all doom and gloom for her

'You are beautiful' is a normative statement about 'beauty' which is put on women as their 'value'. You're essentially saying 'well she still has value because she is pretty'. And that's exactly the kind of shit that leads to unhealthy coping strategies etc
Like, she doesn't 'have value' because she's 'beautiful'. She just does. End of story. Putting this pressure on people, 'good' or 'bad' is still putting this pressure on people, what's so hard to understand there.

i feel like you're making assumptions here that i said her value only comes from her beauty. i think beauty adds to value but it's not the only thing that matters for women OR men either for that matter. she clearly is going through the surgeries and anorexia because she cares about her appearance, so why is stating she still looks fine and isn't ugly a bad thing? imo beauty does give you some value at least in a superficial sense. we aren't robots, we have attraction to things and a positive attraction is a positive value.

For a lot of people with eating disorders any comment about their appearance and attractiveness will only fuel the eating disorder. If they get lots of compliments when they're dangerously skinny then they'll obviously conclude "this is good I need to be skinny/skinnier." However, when people say things like you did like "they were cuter before" it almost always spirals the person into trying to "fix" their appearance even more
You have to remember that unfortunately people with eating disorders do not see themselves objectively and they often are not thinking straight bc their body is struggling to survive. So even if you're trying to say something positive, that's not necessarily going to be the effect it has on the person. This is why it's important to generally center the discussion around having a healthy lifestyle rather than appearance (actually being healthy, not when people use the word "healthy" to disparage anyone bigger than a size 2)
Also additional note that isn't necessarily to do with this conversation, but people with eating disorders will often have their weight fluctuate drastically. Bc their eating habits are so inconsistent, their bodies get used to holding onto as much as they can, so it's common for people with eating disorders to rapidly gain weight and then rapidly lose it, in a cycle. And of course, when they lose the weight people will compliment them usually, thus fueling the eating disorder. This is why it's generally best to never comment on someone's weight unless you know them really well and they've specifically been talking about losing weight in a healthy way. (And even then the focus should be on the benefits of the change like "you seems so much more energetic now/you look more comfortable in yourself" rather than their weight directly)
I don't think you meant anything bad by your comment. I just think you don't know much about eating disorders so this is a good learning opportunity

Thanks for your comment. I think you stated it well and i think you are right about him.
But I think his comments heavily imply that her beauty is the most important value to her (maybe he means it from a business perspective and then he might not be wrong... sadly).
So i think it is lack of knowledge AND poor phrasing and reflection.

"I am not reducing her to her appearance, but if she wasn't pretty in my opinion, it would be game over for her" that is how this reads. Look at the votes and realise that is what you sound like. If you feel and think differently to that, reflect on how you communicate your thoughts. I doubt you would want to tell e.g. a close female friend something that she would understand like that.
Your whole statement circles around the idea that while you agree that she is less healthy, she is still pretty and consequently, you think she will be fine. And that might be a understandable (while sad) perspective from a business perspective but you joined a conversation about her health. By moving the conversation away from her health towards her beauty (a very subjective matter, which is especially important in situation), you are communicating that you believe that a focus on her beauty is relevant.
Now i understand that you might be reacting to other people's comments and you feel like they called her ugly and you don't think she is. But instead of stating that, e.g. by saying "while it seems like she is less healthy right now, let's not call her ugly, that is just mean. And personally, i still think she is pretty" but by saying things that imply that her value is in her matching your aesthetic sense.
I want to assume that your heart is in the right but your words are not.
