American here, I hate ads and haven't seen any on YouTube for years. Well, other than movie trailers and stuff I chose to watch intentionally.

OldQWERTYbastard@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 170d

Same here. It's jarring to use someone else's device. AdGuard does a great job on my phone.

Damarus@feddit.org · 25 pts · 170d (6 replies)

Well currently they're delaying the video start by the time it would have taken the ad to play. It's still better than having to actually watch ads, but blockers are not in the best position right now.

Dagamant@lemmy.world · 67 pts · 170d (2 replies)

I'm not the person you're responding to, but I'm running SmartTube on an Nvidia Shield here. Works amazing.

IrateAnteater@sh.itjust.works · 19 pts · 170d (4 replies)

It astonishes me that the shield is still the best of the streaming boxes after all these years.

Dudewitbow@lemmy.zip · 5 pts · 170d (2 replies)

its still very capable, but best depends. iirc there are certain audio formats the shield doesnt support.

i personally would love a new shield using ~switch 2 soc just so i can move emulation/lower end pc onto it.

IrateAnteater@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 170d (1 reply)

What format does the shield not support that other boxes do support?

Dudewitbow@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 170d

I went to go look it up for my old setup, turns out its mainly for the older models, as the codecs are only supported on the newer revisions of the shield tv.

though with the shield tv, one of the missing things that would be nice to have would be AV1 support (as Nvidia only supported AV1 starting with Ampere based gpus)

PalmTreeIsBestTree@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 170d

It’s so versatile. One of the last great products Nvidia came up with before shooting up AI crack.

Cyv_@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 22 pts · 170d (18 replies)

I mean there are ways, like pihole, but I like the simple option of a really long hdmi cable that I use to plug my computer into the TV, so I never have to use any of the shitty built in TV apps.

Edit: not pihole, apparently.

Decq@lemmy.world · 20 pts · 170d (6 replies)

pihole hasn't worked for years to block youtube ads, no?

mic_check_one_two@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 10 pts · 170d (1 reply)

You’re correct. Pihole works at the DNS level. Since YouTube hosts their ads on the same servers that host their videos, blocking the ads with DNS would also block the videos. Which I guess it technically works to block YT ads, but that’s a little like saying “set a man on fire and he’ll be warm for the rest of his life.”

Decq@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 169d

I thought so too, but maybe I missed something new with Pihole/YT Ads.

Cyv_@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 170d

Honestly, I've not used it, I just know of it. From a quick search it looks like you're right tho, you'd probably need to use an external device like an android box or something.

guy@piefed.social · 1 pts · 169d (2 replies)

What, it works for me? Put on an 8 hour video while doing chores and had ads every 5 minutes. Filled with rage I installed pihole and no more ads.

Decq@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 169d (1 reply)

I'm curious how. Maybe a different region? I don't have Pihole anymore but it didn't use to do anything for me for YouTube. Luckily we have uBlock.

dkppunk@piefed.social · 1 pts · 169d

Conduit is probably the best option, I just haven’t done anything with it yet. And I might have to convince partner to cut some holes in the wall to make that work. I’ll eventually figure it out.

If you’ve got a VPN, just install that on your Apple TV. Google doesn’t show ads in certain countries (the list is Googleable). That was an absolute game changer for me.

Quicky@piefed.social · 3 pts · 170d

I use an Apple TV, but I assume it’s the same as any other streaming box or appropriate smart TV.

The absolute piece-of-piss way to block all YouTube ads on it is to install a VPN like Proton, choose a relevant country (easily googleable), and there will be no ads whatsoever in YouTube.

Google doesn’t serve ads on YouTube in a handful of countries.

But having to deal with the actual YouTube site or reopening my google account is worse. Its not even (but still also) the ads at this point but pure resentment against big tech.

Typhoon@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 170d

When it reaches that point I'll stop watching YouTube. I will never feel the pain they inflict.

Rhaedas@fedia.io · 3 pts · 170d

I feel the pain anytime I look at a video outside of my browser. So if it becomes where I can't find a workaround, then I'll just have to go elsewhere. And there will be other places. There are other places, it's just hard to get people to not go to or be on the big one. Push people hard enough, they'll leave.

As an IT guy I consider an adblocker an essential part of my computer security suite.

I will not reconsider until there are laws in place forcing website owners to take legal and financial responsibility for any damage sustained to my computer when visiting their site, and loading their ads.

IF the laws are changed like that, I would reconsider getting rid of my adblocker, ai still wouldn't but I would reconsider the issue.

Exactly, people used to love ads. They would sit down and watch hour long compilation videos of the funniest and weirdest ones. People would get hyped for shit like Old Spice and Skittles and never skip it. Even the Superbowl was less entertaining than the ads it had and that was a mainstream opinion.

It's the exact same as the boomers who keep crowing "Why doesn't anyone wanna work?!" but now it's "Why doesn't anyone want ads?!" lmao

Most people still would.

I personally wouldn't, that's why I use Adblock Plus. But there's a reason everyone started hating on ABP when it started allowing non-intrusive ads by default. Most people do not want to see ads at all, no matter what.

boonhet@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 169d

I don't remember the exact procedure for this, but here's the summary. You'll first want to install sidestore or sidestore + livecontainer. Computer needed for that. You'll also want a stock YouTube ipa file that you can then mod with YouTube Plus or similar utility.

You'll have to update livecontainer (if you installed it) and YouTube every 7 days unless you have a dev license but Sidestore does it with a single button press in-app so it's not that inconvenient. You can install ipas within sidestore (limited amount at a time) or livecontainer (as many as you want I believe, but it's more complicated) without connecting to a computer once the initial setup is done

The ads seem to be pretty variable depending on usage so I suspect not everyone is seeing the same thing. I rarely use YouTube in any form. When I do and I'm rawdogging it for whatever reason, it seems like I get a few short ads, like 30s or less. They're annoying but not awful.

A friend keeps YouTube running constantly on his TV in the background while he works. He gets so many ads and they're so long! Like several minutes of ads, mostly unskippable, over the course of a 15 minute video. I don't know how people deal with that shit.

VRC Non-Skip ads are now generally available, allowing brands to reach TV audiences with Google AI.

Ilumar@lemmy.zip · 6 pts · 169d (1 reply)

It is for their target audience. They're not talking to you, they're talking to their customers.

phoenixz@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 168d

I've been using grayjay lately and when it needs to play an unskipable add you just get a nice looking blank screen to look at instead.

My issue with those sites is that since they're not direct mirrors, they don't have a dedicated archive. And since archive.org has stopped saving youtube videos, that could lead to a lot of lost media. It's a cultural cornerstone that's been around for nearly two decades. If I can't access 15 year old YGOTAS videos then it's just not a viable replacement to me lol

RamRabbit@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 169d

Nebula is pretty good and I'm happy to support creators making quality content.

UBlock Origin on Firefox murders all YouTube ads. Works great. Would recommend.

comrade19@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 170d (14 replies)

Am I bad because I pay for YouTube? I watch it so so much on different devices and also use YouTube music instead of Spotify. The paid teir hasn't undergone enshittification yet (it always does). Thats when ill stop.

fierysparrow89@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 169d (1 reply)

I'm long past the point of even considering paying Google a dime for other people's content.

I'm getting sick of titles like these "... this changes everything...", "scientists are mystified", "...nobody knew...", or some ridicoulus question as title. Majority of creators are hinting lately that yt "suggests" how to title and organize the topic for maximum visibility and monetization. In effect mandating their enshittification features.

Nvm, the moment NewPipe stops being able to play a video in a normay way is the end of yt for me. Just like I left reddit for lemmy.

comrade19@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 168d

Yeah damn I refuse to click on that stuff. I like the slow content which is what I'm subscribed to and is all ill watch

FosterMolasses@leminal.space · 8 pts · 169d

Yeah you're literally part of the problem lol

You're actively funding enshittification, at least the rest of us are innocent

southsamurai@sh.itjust.works · 7 pts · 170d

Nah, nothing wrong with that. The problem isn't users, it's what the company expects from users.

FreddiesLantern@leminal.space · 5 pts · 169d

You’re not bad, google is bad.

I’d suggest already exploring alternatives now. There’s front ends, alternate links, … all with pro’s and cons.

I will say though, once you stop using an account and cut out the feed/algo out of your diet it becomes apparent very quick how much of a grip they hold on our attention just by the layout and such. Now I just check 2 channels every few days and even that’s losing my interest.

Bluefruit@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 170d (2 replies)

Nothing wrong with that. I pay for YouTube premium. Tbh I got fed up with all the hoops on mobile so I just started paying for it and honestly, its been a good fit for me.

I watch a ton of YouTube content so paying for it to support creators and not having ads is fine with me.

frongt@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 169d (1 reply)

How much do they actually get from that?

Bluefruit@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 169d

According to an LTT video that broke down thier revenue about 11 months ago, 45% of your premium sub is divided among creators that you watch.

Not sure how thats calculated, but it seems to be a pretty sizable chunk according to LTT.

Being able to cancel Spotify was a nice bonus too.

What do you mean? UBlock Origin kills all the YouTube ads. Not giving money to Google is perfectly fine.

prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 1 pts · 169d

What's the best way to avoid the ads if you can't just block them with your router anymore?

Coolcoder360@lemmy.world · 20 pts · 170d (2 replies)

Ublock origin has been working for YouTube for me, they've had some rough patches where YouTube updated and then they had to update, but it's been smooth for the past couple years.

null@lemmy.org · 2 pts · 169d (1 reply)

That works fine on my pc or phone, but it's not a viable solution for a tv.

RamRabbit@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 169d

Hook an old PC up to your TV and use a wireless keyboard to control it. Don't use the TV's software.

pycorax@sh.itjust.works · 12 pts · 170d

Download the videos with yt-dlp and watch them locally. If you have a home server, you can set it up to automatically download new videos from specific playslists or channels and add them to Jellyfin.

BassTurd@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 170d

The simple answer is to not use YT, coming from someone that uses YT. Also, if there isn't already, there will be something developed that will do the trick. It's a game of cat and mouse. If they can feed them, then there will be a way to detect them and block them. At least that's my expectation anyway.

this@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 170d

Grayjay has been working well for me lately. I expect I'll just see more "waiting for media to become availible" screens soon.

Unpopular opinion but youtube + music is good value.

But my journey here was unique.

I grew up during the era when ipods / mp3 players incentivized having personal libraries of music files. After itunes became hostile towards that I switched to Google Music which allowed you to upload music files and stream them to your devices. It was great because I had some obscure remixes and indy band albums that I'd lost the CD for years ago.Ended up paying for Google Music after a 3 month trial.

Eventually Google Music became Youtube Music and with it came Youtube Premium. Tried Spotify but it didn't have some artists that I can't remember now anyways. So I just kept paying for youtube music and not seeing ads on youtube.

We need to pick our battles. I don't see much difference in paying Google for a service than having a Spotify family plan like I do. I know spotify has its own problems and my money would be more ethically spent on some other service, but with everything else going on life I can't be arsed to switch to anything right now. For me it gives enough value for the money spent and that's good enough for now.

Canconda@lemmy.ca · -1 pts · 169d (1 reply)

DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 169d

Personally, if it ever gets to the point that I can't avoid ads on YouTube, I will stop watching, except for the occasional tutorial that I can't find an alternative for--so maybe, a couple of times a year.

Although Invidious is now broken due to recent youtube changes, that always happens tho. Cat and mouse game

Yeah I really needed it tonight and it was a major disappointment that all of the public instances are broken with no ETA on being fixed. As I mentioned in another thread, I love invidious, I'm deeply grateful to the devs an those who run the public instances, I deeply mourn piped, but I fear for invidious' future. It already seems like a once much more thriving community has been struggling to keep going. Like, it was sad to see ggtyler leave the scene, though I get why and can't blame him.

I know it's self hostable of course but I don't think most people are willing to do that, tbh I'm not even sure I am. But I guess I'd have no other choice if the public instances all went kaput because I will not be using that disgusting site youtube and giving them more traffic. I'd be too bitter to be able to enjoy or even focus on any of the videos.

oh yeah, reddit even banned the sub for it, r/invidious. What fuckin' bullshit is that, you know?

Thing is, the domain is registered to me, hosted on my own metal, and run in my own house. I don't really think I'm smart enough to fully secure and obfuscate my site, but also not dumb enough to let the public go ham on it while exposing myself to legal action from one of the most powerful companies on earth.

If I get time soon, I'll try to spin up a clone with some layers of protection and anonymity, and share that.

If it comes to it, and most of the producers are there that I want to see, I will pay, whereas I won't knowingly give Google one cent. Are you and I watching the same YouTube? People are making really cool stuff, as they always have and always will, and that stuff happens to be in YouTube right now.

FosterMolasses@leminal.space · 2 pts · 169d

Honestly debatable. I've seen more and more good channels depart or stop posting, or others gradually turn into "react" content channels that only discuss tiktok drama or politics. Even so-called Breadtube for smaller channels has become synonymous with that embedded stereotype.

I compared a screenshot I took of my subscriptions feed from a year ago to now and was startled by the amount of change in incendiary content. It's like the definition of doomscrolling.

I used to spend over 4 hours a day on youtube just watching video essays and skit comedy, but now I split most of that time across writing, itch.io, and catching up on anime. I have so much more free time I finally decided to start One Piece lmao (might try finishing Bleach too)
