What is the laziest, most anti-elitist way to make coffee?

I have an idea for a post, some may have seen a comment of mine earlier. I’m looking for the most offensive-to-coffee-snobs approach to making coffee possible. I’m assuming something to do with instant, but from there, I don’t have many ideas.

Someone suggested reconstituting it in milk, that seems fun, any other ideas? I’m fully expecting the end result to be absolutely disgusting, for what it’s worth. I’m looking for the worst abomination possible, but it still needs to technically be coffee. Get creative, have fun with this. Whichever technique gets chosen (or multiple get combined), I’ll credit in the post I make.

Do it like a tequila slammer: drink a shot of water, lick instant coffee, bite into a creamer cup.

That’s hilarious, I love that idea.

bhamlin@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 1d

We call that the poor man's affogato

Bwaz@lemmy.world · 31 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Make a gallon of instant, store it in the fridge. When u want a cup, pour it and warm it in the microwave. You're set for weeks!

tiramichu@sh.itjust.works · 7 pts · 1d

That sounds like way more effort than just making instant normally when you need it.

For people with electric kettles, anyway.

artifex@piefed.zip · 29 pts · 1d (2 replies)

I can’t find it now but I once read a (probably Reddit) post about an engineer who had access to extremely high pressure hydraulics, and force-extruded ultrafine coffee through a semipermeable membrane at something crazy like 100bar.

Edit: Oh you said anti-elitist. Nevermind, my bad.

BurntWits@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 1d

I do actually have a use for some of that info in the post I have in mind, so thank you still for your comment.

VeganCheesecake@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 1 pts · 13h

But wouldn't a semi-permeable membrane be way to restrictive? I mean, we use them for water filters cause they don't really let things other than than water molecules through.

Instant coffee, the cappuccino kind with disgusting powdered milk and caramel flavored.

My husband used to microwave water and use that microwaved water to make instant coffee. I think mixing it then microwaving it is the only thing that could make it worse. Or instant coffee from the spoon.

BurntWits@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 1d

Sounds terrible. Thank you!

gandalf_der_13te@feddit.org · 1 pts · 18h

i personally use hot tap water instead

Nomad@infosec.pub · 15 pts · 1d (2 replies)

Had a rowing Buddy that would make "death in Stalingrad": standard coffee drip machine. Put in powdered coffee and fill with vodka. Both coffee and vodka as cheap as humanly possible. Let her rip and "enjoy". Worst coffee experience I ever had. Like worse than having the shits and vomiting at the same time.

Wfh@lemmy.zip · 5 pts · 1d

I feel like a much more efficient way of getting hammered with disgusting drinks would be to mix instant straight into vodka. The brew pot would evaporate a lot of ethanol anyway.

BurntWits@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 1d

Very promising.

avidamoeba@lemmy.ca · 14 pts · 1d (9 replies)

Instant in warm water from the tap, without running the tap for it to get hot. That would take too much effort.

For all the people mocking instant: it will never be a great cup of coffee, but some aren't half bad. Also very easy and convenient when making coffee flavoured drinks or deserts etc...

I am definitely a coffee snob. I roast my own single origin green beans, manually grind to perfection and pour over/espresso with the best of them.

I do turkish coffee, mocha pot, and even my own chocolate covered coffee beans and a home distilled coffee liqueur. I still have a jar of instant coffee...

klymilark@herbicide.fallcounty.omg.lol · 9 pts · 1d (3 replies)

1: Get the coffee from any fast food restaurant delivered (Burger King is real bad)

2: (Optional) Microwave it since it'll probably be cold

3: Too Much store brand flavored creamer (not cream, can't have real dairy) in it

4: Topped with the fakest whipped "cream" you can find. Preferably just a spoonful of the stuff you find in the freezer aisle

Technically still coffee, but I think this would be illegal to serve in at least 50 countries. Will be a solid 1/10 cup at best, both in terms of taste, and aesthetics

klymilark@herbicide.fallcounty.omg.lol · 4 pts · 1d

BurntWits@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 1d

I’m aware, I’m doing research for a joke post. Feel free to look through my post history on this community to see my stance on coffee. I like to put a lot of effort into my cups but I’m also a big fan of easy accessible coffee too. My coffee making guide that’s pinned in this community was designed specifically for that. A beginner friendly guide for making great coffee without being too intimidating. I just thought it would be fun to do a comparison post (as a joke) between lazy (and terrible) coffee vs the most over the top brew possible, given the debate on here lately between instant vs espresso. It’s just all in good fun.

synapse1278@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 17h (4 replies)

I think making bad coffee in a bad way is not offensive to coffee snobs. What would be offensive to coffee snob would be to get some extremely expensive boutique coffee beans and prepare them in a snob way where each step is wrong. Example:

  • get single original, unwashed fermented with who knows what 80€/kg beans
  • prepare them with a Chemex, using a recycled filter paper (if this ever exists)
  • measures your beans in a measuring cup, 5 cups / L of water
  • grind the beans with a blender (any grind size is fine)
  • skip weting the filter, just put your grinded beans in the filter
  • boil a tap water kettle to 100°C
  • pour all the water at once until the filter is topped up (do not measure obviously)
  • wait until it drains
  • server and enjoy
frigge@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 15h (3 replies)

You did way too many things correctly. Measuring at all, boiling the water, grinding freshly, etc.

If you grind the beans freshly you already cannot offend me anymore. You gotta grind them immediately after buying them and then let them sit for weeks or months before using them

synapse1278@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 12h

My approach for this assignment is to do the things properly but fall short on the most essential points. Pre-grind coffee the day before is a good addition though.

Omgpwnies@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 12h (1 reply)

Some supermarkets here have grinding machines so you can grind them before even buying them!

frigge@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 10h

that is fine though. If you only have a cheap blade grinder at home, the ones in the supermarket are usually super high quality. Also the coffee is still somewhat freshly ground then.

I have heard that professionals or just people that are really into it can taste the difference after a couple of hours. Most other people can taste the difference after 24 hours. The coffee isn’t shit then, it just has noticeably less flavour and might taste a bit stale, as the coffee oils oxidize more quickly.

I am sorry … i know in which thread i am …

My wife actually always eats a bean every time we get a new bag of coffee.

She’s yet to actually enjoy that experience.

joshthewaster@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 22h

I'm going to start doing this. I do it with food all the time, eating things that aren't good unprepared that is, and it helps you learn what makes an ingredient good. It also helps you see exactly how cooking it, soaking it, seasoning it, letting it ripen, etc actually changes things. Anyway, not sure I'll learn anything but worth a shot!

modus@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1d

I've tried this. The chewed up bean is hard to get out of your mouth without several swigs of water. I like doing it with a small piece of chocolate.

aramis87@fedia.io · 6 pts · 1d (1 reply)

See, I envision this as something that a semi-normal someone might think of as a slightly unusual yet perfectly fine way to make coffee, but that would baffle a coffee snob.

Boil plain tap water in a pot, or maybe a plain beaten up old kettle, if you never one. Bring it to a full boil.

While that's going on, pull out your nicest coffee cups - like if you have the ones with the little saucers, that's great. Put them on a tray with a doily if you have one. Put cream and sugar in formal containers, with a special small sugar spoon (or tongs if you're going with sugar cubes). Have some small pretty napkins to go with, maybe a bud vase with a rose and some baby's breath.

Get some ground (or maybe instant?) coffee and put it in a couple of those single-serving tea infusers. Put them on the tray as well.

Let them see you in the kitchen, pouring the water from your manky beat up pot/kettle into the fancy cups. Put everything on the tray and bring it out. Then blithely put the tea infuser into the cup and let the coffee steep at the table-side, like if you were having tea.

It's fancy enough to have them questioning whether this is some special way of preparing coffee that they're just not aware of (or maybe a new TikTok trend), but it's really just you messing with them.

The one I experienced in France long ago. We had been driving through the night and were in desperate need for coffee, so we stopped at a small rest stop. Ordered coffees for all of us.

They had a large, battered metal pot on the stove, and used a soup ladle to pour the coffee into the mugs. Complete with coffee grounds. Nobody knows how long this stuff was simmering there. It could have been days. Or weeks. Or since B.C.

I like my coffee strong, but that stuff was vile.

Archangel1313@lemmy.ca · 5 pts · 1d

Camp coffee. It comes in its own filter, like a tea bag. You throw it in a pot of boiling water, and it turns to coffee.

Put a spoon full of coffee pouder in a cup and poor hot water on it. Let it set and drink it like Turkish coffee.

I guess the instant coffee is the worst you can do. Put to extreme, just lick on some coffeine tablet while spraying coffee aroma into the air.

Turkish is a legitimate brewing style, I’m not trying to disrespect it. I’m specifically looking for something purposely terrible. Maybe I shouldn’t have included the anti-elitist part, that was a mistake I think. I’m just looking for the worst tasting abomination in coffee possible. Step B) Put the sock on the counter.

Step C) Hit the sock repeatedly with a cast iron skillet for about 5 minutes.

Step D) put the sock with coffee still inside inside a 40 oz stanley tumbler.

Step E) drive around until you find someone having a baby at home.

Step F) wait to see if the baby lives. If so they won't need the pot of water they bolied to make dead baby soup. Congratulate them and take thier water while it is still steaming.

Step G) pour the water into your Stanley and decant your fresh coffee. Should be ready in 5 minutes. Remove the sock, squeeze out any coffee juices into Stanley.

Make a small espresso in the way you know your target victem/snob prefers. Including the use of the right small cup, the most fancy beans you can get your hands on, and the best espresso machine you can afford. But instead of handing this small cup of goodness over to the exited snob, you poor it into a pot. The bigger the pot, the better. Then add lukewarm water until the pot is full. Now stare your victem in the eyes, and deadpan tell then that you now have drink-ready coffee for the whole party.

BurntWits@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Coelacanth@feddit.nu · 4 pts · 1d (3 replies)

So it's actually a hard challenge you know, because they "lazy" and the "anti-coffee" elements frequently end up in conflict with each other. Like, the ultimate lazy coffee is putting a couple of spoonfuls of instant in a glass of water and shoving that baby into the microwave on full blast for a minute.

But I would say the most anti-coffee stuff is Starbucks type "coffee drinks" where you use more milk, whipped cream and flavoured syrup than coffee. So that's ultimately my suggestion, I think, even though it takes some effort. Loads of milk, caramel or vanilla syrup, whipped cream, maybe cocoa and sugar dusting on the whipped cream. Bonus points if you have a mug with "I ♥️ coffee" you can pour it in.

BurntWits@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 1d (2 replies)

Empty the contents of a Keurig (best if it’s some kind of flavored coffee) into a tea bag. Boil water in microwave. Steep coffee from teabag in said water.

ouRKaoS@lemmy.today · 3 pts · 15h

Get one of these to empty the K-cup into:

Tea infuser

Stir vigorously in microwaved hot water.

Piss off the tea people & coffee people at the same time

Just Folgers pre-ground. No matter what you do it's coming out like it filtered through grampa's coffin.

BurntWits@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 14h

That’s true.

Sxan@piefed.zip · 3 pts · 1d

I mean... Dalgona Coffee exists.

sapphironZA@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 11h

Drink water instead. But in a coffee cup, buy swear that this is the latest style of coffee drinking that if you believe hard enough, it is coffee.

noxypaws@pawb.social · 3 pts · 1h (6 replies)

buy pre-ground coffee. that's guaranteed to be the worst.

protogen420@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 45m

thats so gourmet of you

BurntWits@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 58m (4 replies)

I mean, it probably won’t taste as bad as instant but old stale pre-ground coffee from originally really nice beans gets points in the offensive category for sure.

noxypaws@pawb.social · 1 pts · 50m (3 replies)

honestly I'd rather have a decent instant coffee than use beans that have been sitting pre-ground for more than, like, a day!

BurntWits@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 40m (2 replies)

That’s definitely a hot take, but respect for knowing what you like. I’ve definitely had pre-ground that was way better than any instant I’ve ever tried, but maybe I just haven’t had good instant yet.

noxypaws@pawb.social · 1 pts · 23m (1 reply)

I've heard (but can't personally confirm) that it's possible for instant coffee to be quite good.

and actually I take it back, I might not turn my nose up at pre-ground coffee over instant, like if I just want black coffee but the only instant coffee also has sugar and (dehydrated) cream.

tho who am I kidding, my sweet tooth would probably win out in that case..

BurntWits@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 15m

I’ve heard of specialty roasters doing instant quite well, but I also can’t confirm if they’re any good or not.

Zier@fedia.io · 3 pts · 1d (3 replies)

I’m looking for the most offensive-to-coffee-snobs approach to making coffee possible.

Boil water, pour in coffee cup, add tea bag. Coffee snobs hate this one trick.

BurntWits@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 1d (2 replies)

I’m probably what a lot of people might call a coffee snob (though I’d disagree personally) but I love tea too, it’s great. Hibiscus tea especially is one of my favourite evening drinks.

Zier@fedia.io · 2 pts · 7h (1 reply)

I love hibiscus tea, Especially hibiscus raspberry. For black tea I love Irish or Scottish Breakfast. And just for the record I only drink French or Italian roast coffee.

BurntWits@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 7h

Hibiscus raspberry is sooo good. One of the best out there. I definitely don’t agree with your coffee tastes though, liquid charcoal isn’t for me. (/s only slightly)

DudeImMacGyver@kbin.earth · 3 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Drip brew? Instant?

Th3D3k0y@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d

Instant, in cold water

PumpkinSkink@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 7h (1 reply)

All of this is so unhinged that its just gonna come off as rage bait. I feel that, if you really wanna piss off a coffee snob, you'd be better off just really earnestly enjoying some extremely pedestrian coffee. Maybe Instant; Maybe one of those blueberry flavored drip brewed coffees from, like 7/11 or Wawa (make sure its not fresh); or maybe one of those bottled Dunks iced coffees; or maybe just insist you like prefer Monster and crack a 1 liter reclosable Monster can.

Like, as a coffee enjoyer, I find myself most frequently disappointed by Keurig coffee, for whatever thats worth.

protogen420@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 1 pts · 43m

the best way to piss off a coffee snob is to drink coffee like a brazillian would just buy the cheapest pre ground at the local store, make it super strong drink a whole cup with little to no sugar or sweetners as if it was water uneventfully

GreenKnight23@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 7h
  • eat 1/3 of a cup of grounds
  • wash it down with maalox
  • wait 15 minutes
  • fill cup and serve
Unpigged@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 20h (2 replies)

Two spoons instant, one spoon sugar, hot water, splash of milk. Peak cheapest insta brand, like you local Lidl.

rmuk@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 17h (1 reply)

Lidl stuff is fine. For the really nasty shit you need to go to Asda/WalMart/Carrefour/etc.

Crozekiel@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 5h

Lightly crush beans with meat tenderizer and pour into small mesh bags that you can pop into hot water later and let it "brew" for a few minutes.

Yes, basically describe turning the coffee making process into the tea making process and bill it as "more portable coffee". Coffee anywhere anytime.

lemmyvore@feddit.nl · 2 pts · 1d

Clever Dripper or the French Press. Because I think what will get coffee elitist absolutely sputtering is that they can't argue with the fact you can get a great cup of coffee without spending a lot of money, without complex gizmos, and without arcane rituals.

deadbeef79000@lemmy.nz · 2 pts · 1d

Instant "espresso" martini.

gandalf_der_13te@feddit.org · 2 pts · 18h

powder coffee (Löskaffee in german, not sure how to translate this properly)

edit: instant coffee

edit 2: it is delicious btw. the only reason why it's "anti-elitist" is because it's not spending a lot of money on luxury products. one package with 200g or sth has lasted me more than a year now.

BurgerBaron@quokk.au · 2 pts · 14h

I'm not a regular user of caffeine but when I need a cup of coffee or tea it's instant coffee or tea bag with hot tap water, and a 30 second microwave to get it hotter. Still tastes better than most fast food joints that have long drive thru lines in the morning for burnt shit in a cup.

Varesti@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 14h

Chew coffee beans and swish hot water in your mouth.

filcuk@feddit.uk · 2 pts · 10h (2 replies)

Good beans are important. Single origin farm. Light roast, not too old, ideally local roaster.
Next, open the bag and let it sit. There are all sorts of volatiles in those beans. Sounds scary.
A month later, crush them with a hammer and boil in a pot for 5 minutes.
Optionally sieve into a cup. Add banana flavouring. Serve luke-warm.

SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 8h

Light roast

BurntWits@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 10h

I might be murdered for trying that.

unknownuserunknownlocation@kbin.earth · 2 pts · 16h

I just showed this post to a coffee aficionado. He only made it through a couple of comments, let out the biggest sigh I've ever heard from him and handed me my phone back.

boonhet@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 4h (5 replies)

Laziest? Sure, but it's not creative.

I take a mug, put the preground coffee in it, pour boiling water on it, stir it so the grounds mostly settle to the bottom, let it cool for a bit and drink. Quite common where I come from. I make it pretty strong too. People accuse me of drinking asphalt, but I enjoy it a bit more than most of those cheap automatic espresso machines.

You'll get a bit in your teeth, that's there for extra flavour and kick.

BurntWits@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 4h (4 replies)

I mean, add some spoons and do a few at a time and you’ve got yourself a cupping.

boonhet@sopuli.xyz · 0 pts · 4h (3 replies)

Heh, never been enough a snob, had to Google that. You're right! Turns out the simplest way to make coffee is also the best way to taste the specific properties of the beans apparently.

I do it with cheap preground though. Paulig, Merrild, whatever is on sale.

BurntWits@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 3h (2 replies)

Well if you ever meet a really annoying coffee snob and you don’t want to feel embarrassed, when they ask you for your preferred brewing style you can always say you like a cupping as it allows you to taste the volatile aromatics more finely or some shit and hopefully impress them enough that they’ll leave you alone.

boonhet@sopuli.xyz · 1 pts · 3h (1 reply)

Oh no, if I meet a really annoying coffee snob, I'll tell them I've moved on to adult drinks and only drink energy drinks now.

Partially true (minus the adult drink part), I drank more coffee as a teenager than I do now, energy drinks are convenient and I like a cold beverage, constantly making tons of ice coffee sounds exhausting.

BurntWits@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 3h

Fair enough. I’ve never had an energy drink before and at this point I don’t want to try. Coffee works well for me and I don’t need all that sugar (or artificial sweetener). I have a rule that I don’t drink any sugar/sweetener. I’m not great at following it but I try my best. Trying an energy drink would probably make that rule a lot harder to follow.

My biggest weakness is juice honestly (and occasionally a latte). I’ve completely given up pop except on very rare occasions (like, probably 2-3 times per year I’ll have a root beer). I think I’ve cut everything else too. I pretty much just drink black coffee and water now. Occasionally wine/beer/whiskey but that’s getting rarer these days. When juice goes on sale though I find it very hard not to buy. If my wife is with me she’ll talk me out of it but if I’m solo I have terrible self control around juice, I’m like a toddler.

fritobugger2017@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 23h

basically any form of instant. Want coffee with creamer and sugar = 3 in 1 pack. Want coffee with just cream or just sugar then get a 2 in 1 specific to that.

AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 13h

Make a pot of tea?

Eat the beans whole.

deliriousdreams@fedia.io · 1 pts · 1d (2 replies)

One cup? Aero Press. All you need is grounds, hot water, a cup and the press. You can do this camping in the woods or on a work site no problem and it's effective so long as you have a way to heat the water.

French Press is my go to method for multiple cups, and it's similarly easy/travel convenient. I like the coffee that comes out of it (even when I've only got pre-ground coffee), you can use a paper filter with it if you don't want the fats/oils, or you have fine ground coffee, and it makes multiple cups.

Both the above methods are easy to clean too.

But I have had some perfectly find coffee all over the world from every method including drip coffee and so on.

My honest to God requirements are just that the coffee is relatively fresh and the contraption for brewing is clean.

I'm not sure I care about much else unless its burnt. Instant coffee is perfectly fine.

Alexstarfire@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1d (1 reply)

I don't think you read the post right.

deliriousdreams@fedia.io · 1 pts · 1d

Nah. I Just didn't think about it the same way they did. The intent is to annoy coffee snobs but I kind of took this as something they were intending to actually do rather than just spouting some BS to annoy people.

I assumed there would be a follow up of this person doing whatever the process was.

I don't know what kind of set up they have. The most bare bones coffee set ups that coffee snobs seem to gravitate to are Aero Press and French Press and they're very accessible. I think "coffee snobs don't like instant coffee" is regional at best.

hex123456@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 10h

Just add water to yesterday’s coffee grounds. Second brew is a free brew.

frigge@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 15h (1 reply)

Coffee snob here. I once talked at lengths about how great specialty coffee is, the breadth and depth of flavours, the intricacies of extraction, etc. bla bla.

When i was done, he just looked at me and said “you know, sometimes when i get to work early in the morning and there is still left over coffee in the machine from the day before i just poor it in in my mug and drink it”

So yeah i think one day old, stale, cold, cheap supermarket coffee is up there i think. I don’t think you need to be a snob to find that offensive

BurntWits@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 14h

Yeah I think I threw up in a mouth a little reading that.

I don’t like to use the word snob but I am very passionate about my coffee. Others would probably call me a snob though.
