Lmao I was going to say "it could just be a cut-through visualization", but... No it couldn't. This is VERY clearly portraying the interior side of a door. On a car with a very weird and obstructive pillar shape, no less.

These luddites will find the smallest details just to complain about AI

NihilsineNefas@slrpnk.net · 5 pts · 1d (1 reply)

How about you tell us the benefits of these details, since you're pro slop;

Multiple generative 'AI' companies were caught using real photos of real people and child abuse victims to generate csam, including musk's grok. They responded by hiding it behind a paid version and then lobbying to make it legal in the US.

Entire states are doubling their water and power consumption by running data centers for these llms advertised as 'AI' to the general public

Mass surveillance is being enabled globally by automated facial recognition software, online post tracking/analytics/bot accounts and mass media disinformation campaigns provided by the products these companies push.

Some of the surveillance software provided by these 'AI' companies is being used to support an actively genocial apartheid system.

Multiple war crimes, such as the bombing of Minab school and multiple targets in Lebanon were facilitated by these products sold to the American military as infallible target designators.

Multiple llms are also directly responsible for actively leading users into suicide, to which the companies responsible for the chatbots said "they signed the terms of use"

Which of these details do you agree with?

The idea is that you keep that volatile, explosive, toxic liquid into as close proximity yourself as possible, while still blocking egress with same. Some scientists say under the seat is best, but putting the tank in a crumple zone has proven to be the most intelligent design.

boonhet@sopuli.xyz · 12 pts · 1d (3 replies)

Presumably they get out of the car? In a drive-thru restaurant, you don't get out.

nickiwest@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1d

I think this is the idea. So the driver can reach the gas tank without getting out of the car.

Because gods forbid that anyone has to walk 15 steps on their own feet to pump some gas.

assembly@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1d

As the other person below me wrote, that’s the process in NJ and Oregon. So this person has something else in mind. Maybe drive through without stopping or something. Drive through with the door open? Just openly spray gasoline at a car like a squirt gun and have gutters send the fuel to the tank? I have so many questions!!!!!!

AppleTea@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 1d

In a few states, its illegal to pump your own gas. An attendant has to come over and do it for you. Maybe that's what they want?

blitzen@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1d

Even in the places you pump yourself, you never really leave your car. So while it’s not exactly like a drive thru, it’s not unlike one either.

saltesc@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d

Depends on the country/area. Most western countries it's DIY, either paying at the pump or inside to staff.

Personally I prefer this because I feel lazy af otherwise. Though, it's quite nice in Japan because they often do the windows and stuff while pumping. But places like Greece, you just sit there awkwardly wanting to stretch your legs but they're confused if you get out.

green_link@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1d (3 replies)

this is my question. like instead of redesigning every car, why not just use some sort of computer vision to remove the gas cap, and then move a robot arm with the nozzle into the car. hell that's 100% easier to retrofit or make new gas pumps like that than redesign hundreds of thousands of cars.

not to make the point that it would be even easier to just stop production of gas engine cars and go electric.

or the easiest 'change' is just to have attendants work the pumps like they do at a lot of gas stations. i remember not even 10 years ago being able to pull up to a full service gas station and never getting out of my car because an employee would come to my car ask me how much i wanted and what type, and then remove my gas cap and insert the nozzle. then go to the next customer.

I'm with the electric option. We need to stop barbecueing our climate anyway.

addie@feddit.uk · 2 pts · 18h (1 reply)

Electric cars just move the power generation elsewhere - often a gas- or coal- powered plant. Yes, large power plants can have better treatment of waste gases, for lower particulates and sulphur dioxides. Still produce the CO2, tho. We need robust public transport options, low-carbon power sources like renewables and nuclear, and reduce the number of unnecessary journeys by shopping locally, car sharing, and working from home wherever possible.

Completely agree - let's stop BBQ'ing the planet. Just need to make lots of little changes, but we need to start.

I can't believe I need to state the obvious here, but this is over and above all of the other extremely valid objections already raised by others vis-a-vis turning the door you sit right next to into an ersatz Molotov cocktail that weighs an extra fifty pounds.

How is this going to help gas stations become drive "thru?" (I see we still also haven't learned how to spell "through.") It's going to allow the gas station to do what, exactly, stick a nozzle in the side of your car?

That's already how filling a modern car with fuel works.

(Yes, I specified modern because otherwise at least one pedantic nerd is going to go "well acktshully" and mention any of the various cars from the '60s and '70s which had the filler hidden behind the license plate or brake light or an emblem on the trunk lid or whatever. We already know. Nobody cares.)

ThunderComplex@lemmy.today · 8 pts · 21h (2 replies)

Ok this gave me a good chuckle. I then thought “ oh but you could make it so gas station attendants just stand/sit outside and fill up cars as they come “ but then I realized this would also be possible today, and I started laughing even harder. Hate to break it to you, but both "drive-through" and "drive-thru" are considered correct.

Wikipedia refers to "A drive-through or drive-thru (a sensational spelling of the word through)..."

As explained on Erin Wright Writing, "According to our primary American-English dictionaries (Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, Webster’s New World College Dictionary, and The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language), drive-through is the preferred spelling, while drive-thru is an accepted informal variant. However, the use of drive-thru has become so common that using drive-through now feels incorrect."

Also keep in mind this is Xitter, where abbreviations are are a normalized (often necessary) part of the lingo.

Corn@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 9h

You put the large rocks in the front yard, with an island and plants around them. For the driveway, if it's a road-facing garage, your car should block that. If you don't put the car in the garage, leaving the car ramps or blocks you use to change your oil against the garage door should be fine.

It's like the famous saying, "If you want to do something that might be dangerous, it's best to do it very quickly so that the danger doesn't have enough time to pop up." Einstein gave his life proving this principle, so the least we can do is quote it as much as possible because big danger is trying to bury it so they can stay relevant in today's economy.

Kolanaki@pawb.social · 24 pts · 1d (3 replies)

How even do they expect this change to make drive-thru gas stations possible? They are already as drive-thru as they can be and the opening to fill the tank is already on the side of the car.

Instead, what we ought to do is have massive refuelling tankers just cruising around and we put the fueling port on the front so we can refuel mid-drive like a fighter jet.

You know, a thing that actually works.

tazeycrazy@feddit.uk · 23 pts · 1d (28 replies)

Ignoring all the safety concerns. Wouldn't this make the door heavier and rase the center of gravity. Also where is the window going to retract to. There would need to be multiple tanks all balanced. I don't think the tank placement is an issue for car designers.

Issue was solved and someone is trying to find a novil idea from AI to justify the cost. LLMS don't understand what a car door is or what filling the car involves.

Ashiette@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 1d (10 replies)

Those are perfect valid concerns but I believe the first one would be that you would have a hose running down through a hinge. Over time, leaks are to be expected, that is if you don't get your car door torn off and end up covered in gasoline.

Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 5 pts · 1d (3 replies)

Also in automobiles doors are expected to absorb the impact of side-collisions, which are very common.

The more one merelly thinks about it beyond the purelly superficial first order perspective, the more reasons pop-up not to have a fuel tank on a door.

wewbull@feddit.uk · 4 pts · 23h (2 replies)

Tanks full of liquid do quite well a dispersing energy. Think of water barrels on the US highway. The liquid just needs to be able to escape.

So we just need to make it an open fuel tank. Problem solved.

Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 21h

Wouldn't it be better to make the fuel tank purposefully explode in case of a collision and direct the energy of the explosion outwards, like reactive armor?

I mean, what could ever go wrong with that idea???

Buddahriffic@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 22h

Or, hear me out, add some nozzles that require very high pressure to activate that shoot flames at the thing trying to crash into you to scare it off or burn it up before it has a chance to get through the door. Then accidents will have to think twice--maybe even three times--before they pop up out of nowhere while you're doing normal everyday things like sneaking through a red light (if you roll slowly enough, you can try to argue that you were pretty much stopped the whole time. It's not a crime, it's a great way to save time.)

moopet@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 1d (4 replies)

The first concern would be "why are we designing things for ICE vehicles at all?" There's no reason to make general-purpose cars any more that aren't electric.

tazeycrazy@feddit.uk · 2 pts · 21h

There is still issues with the electric grid and how people don't know if they will find a charger. Fast charging and availability at service stations has helped but I would say it takes a while to fully convert a population to a new technology. Ice cars also have issues like wild pricing and availability in some remote areas but people have settled themselves with them.

You're absolutely right!

hansolo@lemmy.today · 4 pts · 1d (10 replies)

It's not even novel, in a sense. On planes the fuel is stored mainly in the wings. This feels like an extrapolation of that.

tazeycrazy@feddit.uk · 2 pts · 21h (1 reply)

True but the wings are still structural and have the engines on them. Considering how much fual a jet needs you would struggle to find another place to put it. For a car there isn't the same struggle to find a space and if it's a small car you can make a smaller tank and stop more.

hansolo@lemmy.today · 2 pts · 19h

Sure, but cars are more easily designed to accommodate weird aesthetics that make room for spare tires, gas tanks, etc. It's a low bar.

It would make just as much sense to fill the trunk lid or door pillars with gas. But they're all too small to make it worth the effort. One 16 gallon jug is fine.

Anarch157a@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 19h (1 reply)

Difference is, the wings don't have hinges, which means airplanes doesn't need flexible hoses that can fail and leak between the wings and engines. Another issue are impacts. Airplanes are required by law to keep from hundreds to thousands of meters apart, something that cars doesn't.

And it's not like placing the tank in the doors would save any space. My previous car had the fuel tank right under the rear seat for example, which saved space for the trunk and kept it safe from collisions.

hansolo@lemmy.today · 2 pts · 19h

No, it's stupid, I'm just drawing on a faint similarity.

racketlauncher831@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 1d (5 replies)

Buddahriffic@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 22h (1 reply)

antiR@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d (5 replies)

I think AI should know that already because they basically just use all previous human knowledge unless a weak model was used for this

Zron@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 1d (4 replies)

LLM’s don’t know anything.

They have no capacity for thought or introspection. It receives an input and selects tokens that match an expected output. That’s it. Yes it has been fed the entirety of human knowledge to be able to do this. But that’s like a human memorizing the entire mandarin alphabet but never learning mandarin. An Al just makes a sentence that looks right, or generates an image that matches the tokens in a prompt. I could make a mandarin sentence with random symbols, and it might even say something. Doesn’t mean I speak mandarin.

antiR@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 1d (3 replies)

Aren't we the same though? We don't really know anything until we learn or train ourselves with knowledge? It's just that LLMs only do this per prompt.

LwL@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d (2 replies)

Yesn't. What LLMs lack and causes these idiotic suggestions is context from mediums other than language. If you get down to it humans talking are also just trying to predict what should come next, but we predict this from more input than just text. Particularly with something like design, we come up with the design and then the text and maybe concept art to describe it. The llm comes up with a description that seems likely and then feeds it to a diffusion model to make an image to go with the text.

boonhet@lemmy.zip · -1 pts · 23h

LLMs can be multimodal now. You can chuck a screenshot into claude code or whatever you use and the image generation process can also be done by the LLM itself rather than an external tool call as far as I know

antiR@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 22h

Basically, the problem is input, but AFAIK a lot of AIs now are multi modal. Yes they can make up stuff but if you steer it to the right direction with proper context or inputs, it can help build. Maybe what you're talking about is AIs can't choose rather than think. They can think. Albeit, they can't choose only because of the guardrails. So, you are the user chooses to steer it to what you want

What was this guy thinking?

Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 5 pts · 1d

What was this guy thinking?

AI bros don't do that - they delegate their "thinking" to the statistical text parrot.

Tartas1995@discuss.tchncs.de · 3 pts · 1d

That is clearly his desire but how does it enable a drive through gas station unlike the safe way? That is my confusion.

Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 1d

Yeah, but the exact same effect can be achieved by just having the intake to fill the tank on the door and then a hose down to the fuel tank since you would need a hose going that way anyway since it if wasn't from the intake to the tank it would be from the tank to the engine.

That's gotta be amongst the worst "solutions" imaginable for that convenience "problem".

ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 21h

If you're gonna have someone filling your tank for you, can't they just walk to the back of the car? That's how it's done here in the first place

5ibelius9insterberg@feddit.org · 17 pts · 1d (4 replies)

Why does the gastank need to be part of the door to achieve this? It‘s already possible to fill it from the side of the car in most cars.

Edit: And why IS THE MIRROR ON THE INSIDE OF THE DOOR????

PattyMcB@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1d

Because the gas tank under the car is for NORMIES!

Ugh

boonhet@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 1d (2 replies)

You have to get out of the car to fill it from the side. Drive-thru implies not having to get out of the car

aaaa@piefed.world · 3 pts · 1d (1 reply)

We didn't have to get out of the car in Oregon until the last couple of years

bold_atlas@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d

You don't have to get out when filling up in Mexico either. They're just a more advanced society.

Monkey@piefed.social · 15 pts · 1d (3 replies)

Why is the window that small, and the mirror on the wrong side

dbtng@moist.catsweat.com · 7 pts · 1d

Well, that's a right-side door, viewed from the inside.
The curve of the door and window (that you can't roll down) could account for the apparent size ... you know, if this were a real pic.

But mirror is absolutely on the wrong side. Total AI glitch there.

And the door itself, being a right-side door, is not gonna work for American driving ... again, if this were a real thing and had a real road system it's intended to work for.

Fear not, folks. There's no gas line to the engine. This vehicle is going nowhere.
And how da fuq is your car gonna run on that small of a gas tank? Even after they fix the gas line, it sure won't go far.

TootSweet@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Why is the window that small

Less window, more gas, of course.

the mirror on the wrong side

All the better to apply your makeup, of course.

Corn@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 19h

They did? What reason would you ever have for putting gas tanks in doors?

Was it like some kind of race trickery like putting fuel or boost in the frame?

Earthwormjim91@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 18h

GM has never put tanks inside the door.

They’ve put them inside the cab behind the bench seat, and outside the frame rails under the cab which was a safety nightmare.

The closest is the Ford Pinto where they stuck the fuel tanks behind the rear axle and it would explode if you got rear ended.

There's already a way to make refueling a drive thru, it's called paying $10 to the gas station man to do it for you.

grrgyle@slrpnk.net · 6 pts · 1d

Hmmm but the problem with that is someone makes money by doing something, rather than someone I'll never see making money from owning things.

echodot@feddit.uk · 2 pts · 21h (1 reply)

How lazy do you have to be to not be prepared to get out of your car and stand next to it for two minutes? Presumably when they get home they're going to get out of the car and walk into their house which is a further distance, when you're refueling you literally don't even need to walk the whole length of the car.

rumba@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 19h

If you live in a moderate climate with reasonably new pumps, it's no big deal.

When it's 7 degrees outside and the pumps are slow as fuck in the cold, it's less wanting to be lazy than comfortable.

It falls in line with drive through pharmacies and food, but you sound a hell of a lot more snarky asking someone how lazy they have to be not to walk into CVS to get their prescriptions filled.

taiyang@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 1d (1 reply)

On a buell bike the frame is the tank. Really cool and also dumb.

impairedimperator@lemmy.zip · 9 pts · 1d (4 replies)

Pick the right materials and put burst discs in the right places, this might actually work even in a side-on collision with some straight up mad max flaming tanks.

The biggest issue I see is the fuel lines would have to flex with the door, and that tubing will need replacement during the life of the car. That's the much bigger concern: maintenance that is up to the customer. This is also my concern with "self driving" cars. Unless they "self drive" themselves for regular brake service and oil changes, that shit is just going to allow people to skip basic maintenance until it all catches fire.

fullsquare@awful.systems · 2 pts · 1d (2 replies)

BMP-1 also has fuel tanks in doors, not sure how they solved maintenance problem but it's doable

I mentioned elsewhere that AI is really making people tell on themselves, in terms of how smart they are and how they see the world. It's handy.

Hunter here thinks that a piece of real-ish looking conceptual illustration is all it takes to prove that something is a viable concept. It's like watching a mecha anime and wondering why we haven't got our shit together to construct building-sized robots.

My first thought was the weight of the door now...

rumba@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 19h

Weight in the door bending hinges, making it hard to open/shut

Movement in the flexible line to get it to the engine is a failure point

Noise of the pump in the door.

Pack of frame protection in the door

It's still hard to fill from the inside

Gas spills are going to get in the car.

Tank vents are too close to the interior

and it doesn't really make drive-through work you'll need the handle and all the buttons within arms reach.

Furbag@pawb.social · 7 pts · 22h (2 replies)

An idea like this, assuming it's not ragebait, would probably never leave the confines of this person's imagination and the AI's chat history. By the time you get to the point where you would send a design over to a fabrication shop, there would be too much skin in the game for somebody to not speak up about how dumb it is.

Is his idea that they open the side of your car door and stick a whole new tank in there?

You don't need to put the tank in the door to do that...

Jax@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 14h (5 replies)

People are acting like these will just explode the moment an impact happens.

It would just pop and leak all the gas onto the ground and into waterways. This is a terrible idea for many reasons, but acting like it would increase car related deaths is sort of silly.

thedeadwalking4242@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 12h (1 reply)

This is such a bad take, it would absolutely explode. Car gasoline is so flammable, especially on a hot day when the tank is full of vapor.

If this got T-boned it would pop like a balloon and throw a cloud of highly flammable fluid into the air. Not to mention all the sparks from the collision providing and excellent ignition source.

Jax@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 9h

Gasoline vapor requires a certain mixture of vapor and air to ignite/explode. The tank would not only need to be practically empty (which if you aren't aware, you shouldn't be letting your gas tank get to almost empty - it's not just unsafe it's bad for the car), it would need to immediately be exposed to some kind of ignition source. Sparks would require metal grinding on metal, which typically isn't happening in a T-bone unless it's a really bad T-bone. Not to mention, if the gas tank isn't mostly empty - the amount of force required to vaporize the gasoline is actually insane and simply not realistic. I haven't done the math on it but we're talking melt the car door amounts of kinetic energy which... yeah an explosion is not just guaranteed but the least of your concerns.

It would certainly make fires more likely, again I'm not arguing that this is a good idea - this is certainly a bad idea. But it would not make explosions more likely.

HK65@sopuli.xyz · 4 pts · 13h

It would slosh around every time you open the door

Kevin77@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 13h (1 reply)

The bigger threat is fuel leaking onto you in an accident. You're now riding with the gas tank next to you and above your lap compare to behind you and below you. Most cars burn down from fuel leakage in an accident.

Jax@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 9h

I think a fire is a much more realistic worry than an explosion, for sure.
