awww, yeah? so now that you're being directly impacted by Trump's policies they've gone too far? could this have been avoided by not supporting a fascist perhaps? hmm..

They think they're special and they can do anything they want because they're republican.

What do you MEAN I'm out of the in-group? I was in the in-group.
For those smarter among us, this is why we want laws that apply fairly to everyone.
I don't want a world where crimes are expected, and you just have to continually manage whose good graces you're in in order to survive.
You'd think billionaires of the 1990s would agree, but they can 10x their money if they just avoid falling out of windows.

He would be best to go back to Mexico on his own right now, or else he'll probably end up somewhere he doesn't want to be.
Of course, he's an idiot so this won't have occurred to him.
echodot@feddit.uk · 21 pts · 187d
He openly admits that he doesn't actually know anything about the people he's voting for, and just votes for anyone who represents the republican party. He doesn't even know if he actually voted for Trump or not he just "suspects" that he probably did. This probably means he also doesn't bother to actually pay any attention to any of the policies of the republican party.
He just coasted through life without paying any attention or ever engaging in his brain. He's the reason that manufacturers had to start putting "don't drink bleach" warnings on bleach.

Actually if he did vote for president, he did so illegally.
echodot@feddit.uk · 0 pts · 186d
I don't know, a lot of people in the US act exactly like him. I feel like you should be quizzed at the polling station with very basic questions about a politician's publicly announced policies. You know stuff that you would be able to find out with 30 seconds of research on Google. Nothing too taxing.
If you can't name at least one policy announcement you should be kicked out.

ICE is rediculouse, just some fat low life looser thughs that a motion-disabled person could outrun
But yes i get why we compare them, brings the point across, both are fascists/nazis and SS is on a waaayy different level.
If ICE is that pathetic, how pathetic will be their attempt at an SS!?

Goldholz@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 6 pts · 186d
If you dont have a gun and you are outnumbered by a group with guns, ofc they are scary. They arent trained. They dont use tactics. Put them in a combat situation, an ambush, they wouldnt survive at all. The gestapo were trained in combat hand to hand, tech and fire arms. And that properly.
Take their armor and guns away and you once again only have "hubert your friendly neighborhood fascist"

We're doing fascism but it's being driven by mostly incompetent shitkids. I guess we should thank our lucky stars they are so incompetent because what happened in germany showed what competent types can do, and that's not really 'catching on' here in parallel to 1935 deutschland. The US is also a country with a longer history of open free discourse than the brief freedoms germans had between the wars.
And finally, although the economy is wretched, we aren't to the bread-lines and other horrors the depression brought.
We may get there though at this rate. And don't get it twisted, they aren't all incompetent fascists, just notably a bunch of incompetent moves. We aren't out of the woods yet entirely.

A little-known fact is that Hitler's purge of Ernst Roehm and other brownshirts acquired the name "Night of the Long Knives" because Hitler used the phrase (which dates to medieval times) to describe what Roehm allegedly had planned for Hitler in a speech shortly after the event. Hitler never intended his own actions to be called that.

How did he get a ballot if he's not eligible to vote? At least in my state, you have to sign the voter register that has your name pre-printed. I suppose Kansas is different.
AA5B@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 187d
Right, that’s what these crazies always forget - register to vote is where your eligibility to vote should be verified, and there are ways to do that without suppressing votes
Interesting, apparently it’s only since 1996 that non-citizens voting became a crime, and that only applies to federal elections …. Then there’s whatever citizenship law Kansas tried to pass was ruled unconstitutional
Historically people in his situation were treated like human beings and immigration enforcement of a contributing member of society was civil, compassionate, and had due process routes to legality or at least to transitioning your life without hardship
So this guy was not committing a crime assuming he registered to vote more than 30 years ago, the state failed in their duty to check eligibility, and he might still be able to legitimately vote for himself

He shouldn't have voted, and should have known not to, but he didn't expect this because he's stuck in a system that's been screwed up for decades. One that Congress won't reform precisely to leverage it as a wedge issue like this. And now that debt has come due.

Leopards ate his face, blah blah blah. By this point, if you don't know Trump is a blowtorch and he's indiscriminate about where he points that flame, you deserve the face eating leopards. Carrying Trump branded blowtorches. Or something else also mixed in metaphor.

This doesn’t say if he’s actually allowed to be mayor or not. I would think if you can’t vote you can’t be mayor? I guess they let dogs do it sometimes though so, I don’t know.

You're correct. In the linked Wichita Eagle article it says
BTW there's a lot to shake your head at in that article. The stupidity and lack of education of not just this guy but apparently the whole town. They didn't know he wasn't allowed to vote. He wasn't sure who he voted for, he just always voted for the (R). Plus the whole town loves this guy so they're all mad at Kobach. That county went 80% for trump but they're all upset that they're having the day they voted for.

I’m all for leopards eating faces. But, I encourage you to read the article this blog was ripped from instead of just the headline. https://www.kansas.com/news/state/article313143711.htm
He is the mayor of a town of 600, because he does things like put up the town’s Christmas lights. He doesn’t care about politics. Not exactly someone trying to build power within the Republican Party.
He got registered to vote because he raised his hand on a group trip to the court house. Imagine being the only person in the group to not raise your hand. The county clerk didn’t bother checking his status of permanent resident.
Even his friends basically say he is a ‘simple man’. I have a hard time holding resentment against someone who only votes because his friends do and who pays no attention to politics. According to his friends, he doesn’t even know the most basic differences between the political parties. It almost reads like he is on spectrum.
Let leopards eat faces. But maybe we can save the ridiculing for those who didn’t get eaten because the system failed them.

Stupid or Evil don't make no difference to me, he's getting what's coming to him.
How about the other thousands of people who had a right to Due Process but have been kidnapped or murdered by ICE? This guy is special? GTFO.
SpawnStorm@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 186d
My goal was achieved then, you at least read the article before commenting.
Many people weren’t.
Fair perspective.
Serious question here. Do you think that someone’s voting history should determine how the law is applied? It sounds like your saying that because bad things happened to good people in the past (days, weeks, months, and currently happening) that we should not give Due Process to this person because of their voting history. When I read the article I didn’t get the sense that he was asking to get special treatment because he voted a certain way. I read it as a person scared and hurt, the exact same tone I have unfortunately read hundreds of times this past year.

Sir, this is a small consolation prize for failing to understand my meaning.
Due Process is for EVERYONE. Implying that it is a privilege only afforded to this camp or that camp is exactly what the Republicans are doing right now. This guy either A) didn't care that the person he voted for was threatening to take it away from "other people," or B) didn't even know what he was doing at all. But who cares what knot was used in the binding?
Zexks@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 187d
No. Ignorance is no longer an acceptable excuse. Just because ypu dont care about politics doesnt mean politics doesnt care about you.
SpawnStorm@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 186d
Look, I get it, I really do. It is nice to vent and see leopards eat the faces. “Ignorance is no longer an acceptable excuse.” I agree. But for me, that perspective only applies when I’m talking to someone directly either in person or online. But I also don’t get schadenfreude when it is pretty clear a total stranger in an article had no idea what was going on, and is trapped by a system that failed them decades ago.
People who licked store shelves in April 2020 to “own the libs” now that is schadenfreude.
My original post wasn’t to excuse his ignorance either. I wanted to raise awareness of the nuance of the guy’s situation. Several comments at the time clearly showed that it wasn’t read. We have a real problem with people commenting on headlines and not taking the time to read.
Lastly, in my opinion, this is pretty shitty leopardsatemyface content. If I went to another country and broke a law out of ignorance, it is one thing to be punished for it, it is another thing to be mocked.
