What do people even mean by "If you don't use AI, you'll fall behind"?

it's getting to the point where I notice people say it a lot, especially IRL now for whatever reason recently.

And for clarity I'm not in research or anything, so these people just mean 'LLM/image gen', not utilities like OCR or (usually not) transcription.

Some have argued it's just more efficient (which I can kind of get), while others think you're actively hindering your intelligence somehow.

On the first point:

I've tried it occasionally to see how it compares to my own skill, and while it produces a functional result, it's always very derivative work to the point where you can find things with the exact same names of other 'public' (but not libre) works, and often isn't the ideal solution to what it targets. So I can see how you can get things out of it, but it never felt really that profound to me.

But for the second... isn't this supposed to be the tool for people to do things they aren't experienced in? If anything, you probably need to be able to understand how to write pertaining to the task so the token probabilities are biased toward writing from that area.

And even then, if all you end up doing is prompting AI, then wouldn't you ultimately serve no purpose outside of being glorified QA?

I guess I'm trying to figure out what exactly non-users would be 'falling behind' in that affects them more than those who use AI?

AI is the first major technology that I have have actively worked against.

I am a person who strongly believe that technology should make us better, and I can only see AI/LLMs making us weaker.

I tend to have a vivid imagination, and all I am thinking of when seeing people use AI is, "ok but could you have accomplished the same thing without AI?"

When the AI bubble pops like the overstuffed bubble it is, and prices are going up, will you remember how to do your job without it?

Or, even simpler, what about if the AI service goes down, will you still be able to do your tasks?

For many, I suspect the answer is no.

I see it with ADAS.

It appears that the more Advanced Driver Assistance Systems a vehicle has, the less competent the driver is and the more likely it is that they will not react correctly (or at all) in an emergency situation.

ANCAP and ENCAP are realising this now and their ratings are no longer weighted so heavily on ADAS.

Yeah, this has been a long problem in government agencies here.

There was a political decision made years and years ago, that in-house expertise was too expensive and that they would hire consultants when they needed specific skills.

That works only as long as you have the in-house skills to determine what external skills are needed.

Same here, without the skills to do the work, you don't have the skills to correctly evaluate the work of an LLM.

Sure. Protein structure is the clean example. For decades the same thing was done without AI: crystallise the protein, collect diffraction or NMR data, solve the fold. That works. It also costs years and a specialist lab per structure. AlphaFold did not invent a new kind of knowledge. It made the existing problem cheap enough that we now have predicted structures for hundreds of millions of proteins instead of a few hundred thousand experimentally solved ones.

“Could you have done it without AI?” is the wrong test. The test is whether the extra cost of doing it the old way is worth paying every time. Sometimes it is. Often it is not.

People aren't talking about alphafold when they're talking about "AI" in 2026. They're talking about chatgpt, claude and copilot.

I would hard disagree. It absolutely applies for super narrow applications like alphafold, but in general, LLMs aren't remotely close to being worth it. You don't need to look beyond how hugely unprofitable AI companies are. The only companies who aren't completely shoveling money into the furnace are the ones selling hardware to the companies that do.

We also see that the consequences of AI use are pretty harsh. Students who use a lot of AI are a full year behind their counterparts that don't, according the the latest PISA data.

So what we have is something that is unaffordably expensive, with dubious benefit and immense second order effects.

No. There’s no way I could build a full web app on my own in under a day. AI enables me to do that. You’re basing your whole opinion about AI solely on how capitalism is leveraging it. There is a lot of great potential with AI. Medical fields. Non-profit space. The list goes on.

I've got some bad news for you. Even with AI you still can't make a full web app in under a day.

You can make a fun little demo for sure, but that's a long way away from a full web app. Even without doing any coding or using the computer, simply describing a full web app using pen and paper would actually take more than a day. And when it comes to actually making such a thing, there's so many things besides the coding and even with regards to the coding you haven't considered.

This is a big issue with AI. It provides a shortcut to some sort of end result. Since people get a result, they tend to think they have actually achieved the desired result. But in reality most things are much more complicated and people often have entire careers specializing in one aspect or the other. There's so much that goes on, without people not in the know realizing. Without being an expert yourself, you wouldn't even consider those things to be important.

Let me explain using an example. I can write words on a page. I could even think of a story and give it some structure. Does that mean I can write a book? Technically yes. Would that book be any good and people want to read that book? Probably no. That's because I know enough about writing books, that I know I don't know shit about writing books and would not be able to without years of learning and failing. Now AI could help me vomit out words faster. More words more quickly means I can get a whole book worth of words out in no time at all. But does that mean I somehow gained the knowledge of how to write a good book? No, because I didn't learn anything. In fact I would learn less from using the AI than I would have simply writing down the words myself. Using a tool doesn't magically grant skills that weren't there before.

A lot of people don't understand this and shit out shitty AI books anyways, which then nobody likes. They shit out apps, which then nobody likes and they get abandoned almost immediately. They shit out "art", which then nobody likes. And since they got to some kind of a result, they glaze the AI tools and say it's amazing, even though the results were shit.

It’s a tool. It can build full web apps. I’m not talking SaaS. Just simple things. And I’ve learned along the way as well. It’s all about how you use it.

And they say AI doesn't cause brainrot... "Sorry you can’t get AI to work for you. Keep trying!" sounds like the kind of thing you would expect from someone who only outputs the highest quality of work, doesn't it?

I'm not saying all AI users are like this, and there are many smart developers that do use it effectively (like Torvalds), but there is definitely a loud group of AI cheerleaders that extremely careless and overconfident, while lacking any sense of self-criticism or oversight of what they say or do.

And by the way, you definitely can build simple web-apps in a day without AI. I was doing that in 2015 by just following the Django tutorial. It took me longer than a day because I tried to read the documentation and understand it. But if I put the same amount of effort that these low-effort AI users do, I could have easily just copy-pasted shit from the finished tutorial and been done in an hour with the same level of understanding (or lack thereof) that AI users have.

That's the difference between good and bad engineers - you have the tools in front of you, but can you make yourself a better engineer while you use them?

Speaking of which, you know what these AI tools do? They just go to github and copy off some project that already does what you want it to do. Anyone could do that before AI existed. Sure, it's definitely impressive that they can understand what you want to do and find the right result (usually), but you could do that ever since search engines were invented. AI is just the "I'm feeling lucky" button from Google from back when people had enough sense to be a little critical of the results they were looking at before they clicked it.

llms are able to do a lot of things many people simply can't (at least without spending a long time learning), although the result can be mediocre. it's being misused widely, but doesn't mean it's entirely incapable of anything useful.

recently i've seen it being used for reverse engineering, seemed like a pretty good usecase.

Every one of those mathematical milestones made by AI is followed by an article from a mathematician pointing out the 'discovery' was a flawed rehash or not really applicable to the problem. Same for all the claims about finding bugs, they are old and known bugs and occasionally it can identify already known types of bugs faster as long as a human can filter out the wrong results.

AI does do a fine job of filtering large data sets in controlled environments, like how it is used for finding exoplanets, but just for speeding up an existing process.

It doesn't do anything new.

No, LLM’s CAN replace cognitive work. You don’t have to give up all your thinking to an LLM. Think about what you want. Create very specific instructions. Review the output. Challenge it. Refine. Ask questions. Make decisions. Teach it something. It’s a tool. It doesn’t have to replace your brain.

Calculators... are devices designed to produce deterministic results that can be proven (and yes, with a seed AI is technically deterministic, but that doesn't make it easily provable) as accurate very easily. If you removed calculators from a task, either the result would be completely the same, or it would be worse due to error introduced by something unpredictable.

past like really, really early education, I don't really see a point to go without a calculator since it uses up so much time for little gain.

It is highly unlikely, but possible, that the majority of the people you are talking to are wearing clothes they made themselves without aid of machine.

It is highly likely, that at least one person reading this DOES believe we should destroy all the factories and return to the trees.

How they manage to have that argument on the internet without imploding due to cognitive dissonance is beyond me, but I have seen more impressive feats of confusion in my days.

I absolutely could not build a web app on my own from scratch and at this point in my life I do not have the time to learn how.

There’s absolutely no doubt that AI democratizes many capabilities that people otherwise would not possess, whether the output is “slop” or not. Sometimes you just want to quickly prototype something. Doesn’t have to be perfect. You can do that in minutes to hours. If you like it, pay somebody to do it right, or AI may even be able to do it right depending on the task.

I think you look at a web app too narrowly, a web app could be any page that loads content from an external source.

I am not a web developer, and I built a system that logs the water temp to a database and a webpage displays it to help people know if they want to go for a swim or not.

It took a few weeks of free time to get everything to work, but it has been running for about 5-6 years continuously.

That is a web app, an application solving a need running on the web.

It was developed by me without any AI, and I have only limited experience with web development.

I think you can do more than you give yourself credit for without AI.

There is so much wrong with that.

For starters, you don't possess it. You still can't do it because you haven't learned.

Second, it's not something you have inherent access too. LLMs are completely unaffordable to anyone using them, which is why the companies are running insane losses. Your use of LLMs depends entirely and fully on the availability of venture capital to burn.

Third, it was always within your ability to learn. The information to acquire the skills has been available for free.

Fourth, thanks to LLMs (and enshittification) it is becoming more and more difficult to find and access that free information.

You can delude yourself all you want that the AI is enabling you to do "x". But all it's doing is ensuring that you can never do x and that you keep getting worse at everything related.

And science is proving it. In just a few years of usage, llms are making people stupid and insane.

The brain is like a muscle. Each time you get in a car to travel 5 miles in 6 mins instead of running there in 30 minutes you get weaker. After 10 years your body will be in a horrible shape and much closer to death.

Yes I'm against calculators too for most things. Because of avoiding them I can do small calculations faster in my mind than most people can type into a calculator.

And guess what I'm not left behind. Because of my philosophy I am stronger and sharper than most people half my age.

I mean you probably could do a decent range of web apps in a day as a minimum viable product, if you already have a solid plan ready. But that's kind of the thing with AI.

AI... really seems to just make derivative stuff. I tried asking it to replicate one of my terminal text editors (via a description of it), and it ended up making... essentially a 1:1 rip off of different editor but with more comments. I have a feeling that the massive amount of training data is what makes it seem like it can write lots of applicable code, while it's still suffering from quite literally being just a larger version of this half-decade old Google Translate update under the hood.

Of course it’s derivative, but just like any tool, the user plays a huge role in the output. You just work with it. It can do lots of things and it can’t do lots of things. Am I gonna sell anything I make with it? Probably not. I use it to help myself and to prototype things really fast.

Well, good luck making sure your page doesn't have huge security holes, that it performs well (and by good performance, I mean that it can run reasonably well even on a 2010 or even 2005 computer), that it handles memory properly, and that it's not just a skeleton that works by selling your soul and destroying your device. You'll need infinite luck for that, I assure you.

The people who espouse such nonsense as "if you don't use AI you'll fall behind" believe that using AI will become an absolute necessity in the future, and that those who use AI now will have more expertise in using AI than those who don't, giving them better prospects. Those same people end up saying "you're just not prompting it right" when you point out flaws in the LLM's responses.

Prompting is obviously a skill that you can improve, but if you compare it with the skills they are trying to replace it's a very basic skill. Going through a computer science program and a few years of work experience vs figuring out what prompts it tends to fuck up and learn to safe guard against that (as much as you can) are different leagues, different sports, different everything.

It's like saying that if you don't start using lemmy now, you'll fall behind when the year off the fediverse is upon us, when you'll just pick it up as well if need be.

Prompting reminds me that most people around me don't know how to use Google. If I want a recipe for an apple pie, I type "apple pie recipe" (3 words). Other people would type "i want to make an apple pie and I need a recipe or something."

And now it's worse with chatbots because they would say "dear ChatGPT, I have been thinking of my grandma and I would loooove to make an apple pie like the one she did, it would mean a lot to me, and also the sun is shining, thanks, kiss, goodbye, have a nice day." It's horribly inefficient and shows that most people cannot use computers properly, and don't understand that they are fast calculators and not magical brains.

It is even worse, since LLMs talk back like that, which probably encourages people to be like that. I had to use one to solve a Linux problem, for which I could not get help any other way, and it was just awful. I do not want the agent to spout useless phrases like a human, it just wastes so much time to read them, when you have to figure out are the answers even close to being useful. Maybe I could have prompted it to just reply more efficiently, but I tried to keep the usage minimal anyway. That discussion made me sound more like the robot. "Blahblah not working" "Oh I'm so sorry you are having this problem. Lets start with..."

These people are now "super human AI prompt masters", nut my natural ability with written language from a young age and early exposure to technology has made me (and anyone with good vocabulary and grammar mechanics) better than a lot of these idiots could ever hope to become with years of practice. The thing about corporate cultism, though, is in your mind it always makes you "superior" somehow, if you can stick your head far enough up your ass. Corporatism is all about enthusiastic support of your own exploitation, and this shit is the ultimate expression. We need fucking LLMs more than clean drinking water to hear these robber baron fucks tell it.

If it was good, we would use it. And any way, it's like learning how to use Google, it doesn't take weeks to understand how to write a basic sentence. It's a skill that you could acquire in 24 hours at most if you speak English.

I'm in software engineering. AI is pretty far along in my field, and also very suited for it. I've spent two decades writing everything from very low-level to high-level code. I enjoy it, but it's just labor at this point. What LLMs allows me to do is move to the role of systems architect. I have an endless supply of tireless jr engineers to execute my designs.

I get quick results. But I'm not as in touch with the codebase as if I had written it myself. You can do things wrong, and you can do things right. I like to compare it with a chainsaw. You get the job done a lot faster than with a regular saw, but you can fuck up a lot harder, too.

The field is moving fast. In the last two years it's gone from helpful auto-complete to finishing projects on its own.

I expect to be downvoted.

I'm also in software engineering. I spent some time thinking like you, then some time trying to find a middle ground between using AI like that and doing everything myself.

Now I do it all without AI and am slowly purging all of the rituals around LLM usage from my brain. I'm trying to reclaim that space for useful knowledge in the languages I like to work with.

The reasons are numerous, some ethical, some practical, and some personal.

Ethical:

  • There's no way to use frontier LLMs without contributing to climate change. The products of Anthropic and OpenAI are built on raiding the planet's resources.
  • They're also built on plagiarism on an unprecedented scale. Their products wouldn't exist if it weren't for stealing basically all copyrighted works ever created by people, and would be even less economically viable than they already are if they were forced to pay for the thievery.
  • They're addictive to use. People become dependent on them to the point of losing the ability to make decisions on their own. The non-deterministic nature of their output means people react psychologically to them the way gambling addicts react to roulette wheels, always hoping the next prompt will be the one that hits gold.
  • Small, local models help, and the ones that are both open source and open weight are far superior to the rest in terms of ethics, so for anyone addicted to LLMs, I'll recommend them as a form of methadone. But their psychological impact on their users can be just as damaging.
  • The business practices of these companies is driving the largest economic bubble in history. When (not if) the bubble collapses, it will hurt millions of people. They don't care, because in the short term, number go up.

Practical

  • Model-produced code isn't as good as anyone who's creating it thinks it is. I've lost count of the number of projects I've seen from other developers (who think they've mastered the art of AI wrangling) that contain rudimentary errors - including gaping security flaws. I found the problems just by being the first person in a while to actually look at the code. No, not diffs, because when you're churning out five thousand-line PRs, if the PR "looks right," you'll usually just sign off on it.
  • The Supreme Court has already ruled that the output of LLMs can't be copyrighted. So from a legal perspective, you're risking poisoning your own projects with the output of coding agents. If someone steals that output and markets it as their own, what are you going to do? It was already derived from stolen work itself, so it's not like it's yours.
  • Becoming dependent on businesses that have no path to profitability is a terrible idea. If you have built your workflow around Claude Code and Anthropic folds, what will you do? These companies cannot offer their services in a way that brings them sustainable profit. When the venture capital runs out, the clock starts ticking on their actual viability.

Personal

  • Both of my kids are artists. I want to be able to look them in the eye and tell them I'm not using tools that are designed to make creativity obsolete and replace it with statistically generated pixels.
  • I'm also a writer. I don't want to become dependent on tools that deprived my fellow writers of their copyrights so that slop manufacturers can try to replace them with statistically generated words.
  • I hate the way I feel when I'm using an LLM. The brief highs of getting the output I wanted (more or less) is offset by the impact on the way my brain works. I find myself thinking less and asking the LLM for its "opinions" more. I stop trusting my own judgment. And I start feeling addicted.

On that last point: I knew I had to stop entirely - not just limit my usage or restrict myself to local models - when I realized part of my brain really didn't want me to. I had to have an argument with myself in order to do anything by hand, and I like coding by hand. I enjoy the puzzle-solving. AI was replacing my main source of enjoyment in my job.

And it wasn't even doing that part well, it was just doing it faster. I am a better coder than any LLM, and that's not a brag, because I know there are tons of developers out there better than me. Faster doesn't equal better.

So that's where I'm at today.

My experience has been that when you educate people on the background and non ethical training on AI, you get a blank stare.

Either the scope is too big or they do not really believe the implications. I don't know. I wish there was a short layman relatable and believable explanation.

If everyone moves up to senior now using LLMs, that's all well and good now, but then there'll be no juniors to steal the grunt work from to train AI and no-one to move up to senior in a decade or two.

Do you really think that the hobbyists are going to be enough to steal from to perpetuate the system in the near future?

It also means that when some new technology comes out there won't be a wealth of knowledge for the AI to consume and regurgitate, so the use of new technologies will be hindered if everyone relies on AI trained on current technology.

That's my concern too. We're already seeing middle school and high school kids out sourcing all their thinking to AI. Once this generation of devs is gone, who's going to replace them? I'm sure there will be SOME people who find a fascination with learning and knowing and trying code on their own. But that won't be enough people.

The majority of coders "steal" code from other coders on Stack Overflow. This has been happening since coding was invented.

The thing is that it's apparently expected that everyone use AI.

With StackOverflow it was less than the full complement of developers who went there for help, so there was always someone to provide answers.

AI will kill StackOverflow and places like it. AI will create a dearth of new developers, and those that still choose the profession will be AI rotted and unable to move up or advance. They won't post anywhere on the Internet, and even if they do, what they know was derived from StackOverflow before it stopped being updated. That's not even a complete cover of tech now, let alone several years down the line when tech has moved on.

This whole thing is cashing in an investment and in 20 years we're going to be confused about why that investment is no longer accruing interest.

We've already seen models degrading from being trained on LLM-generated data. The big companies were overly eager to follow the EU directive to watermark output. I think that's solely so that they can filter it out when scraping for future training data. They're running out of good training data to steal. I don't imagine they'll be paying a fair wage to anyone generating novel good data.

Entry jobs disappearing is uncharted territory. My latest hire had three years work experience in a very niche field. I'd have a hard time justifying anyone more jr than that for a startup burning investor capital.

I like the chainsaw analogy but I think you need to apply it more like, you're trying to carve something out of a tree stump and you only have a chainsaw nothing else. So you can make it look good. But the fine little detail work isn't as possible. You have you go back in with other tools to do fine detail work.

And like a chainsaw, without practice, you have no idea what you're doing at first. If you vibe code something without coding experience, a lot can go wrong but if you don't understand how it works, you can't fix it.

im going to put it easy: You work doing some kind of research or whatever on daily basis. You used to do that task in maybe 5-6 hours, same as your colleagues. Now all your colleagues use AI and do the same task in about 20min (even if the result is crap it does have some good takes), so the CEO sees you are the only one who doesn't perform equally because you choose not to, and you're fired.

So yeah... it's crap, it will make things worse, but for now you have to use it wheter you like it or not.

Agreed. Most people are not going to personally benefit from LLMs, in particular those in non-STEM fields. But...

Avoid LLMs. Preserve your brain and skills. Don't become a slophead.

The first sentence is unnecessary for the other two. It is insufficient for the second.

For example, I use a LLM as a LaTeX assistant. I still end up heavily modifying whatever the machine gives me by hand. And I always do my own reading... because the whole point of me reading papers and books is to put them in my brain. And I still volunteer to do certain exercises on paper or whiteboard simply to keep my mind in good shape.

What LLMs allow me to do is focus on the mathematics and the theory of whatever I'm writing, and offload some of the unenlightening cognitive effort of writing and debugging LaTeX code to the machine.

Similar remarks can be made for non-typographical programming in certain situations.

The solution to not becoming a slophead is, more precisely, to occasionally (say X% of the time) put your foot down and actually do the thing you wanted to give to the LLM. The most extreme versions of this solution are to set X := 0 (never use your brain) or X := 100 (always use your brain, your solution). And while for many people setting X := 100 might be the best solution, for some of us, particularly in information-dense technical fields, setting 0 < X < 100 (both inequalities strict!) might be able to make our lives easier without slipping into slophead behavior.

Firstly thank you for such a thoughtful and long reply. You are right about LLMs reducing cognitive overload and helping you concentrate on the core problem. I avoid them for environmental reasons too.

I too am not a fan of boilerplate and tedious languages like latex.

My approach for dealing with it is using better abstractions like typst. When I was seriously writing LateX years ago I had emacs macros and shortcuts to power through the tedious parts.

I also choose modern programming languages like gleam instead of java or js. They are easier to reason about and write fast manually. IME you can overtake the productivity gains that LLMs offer after 3-6 of working on a project.

I mean yeah, I do prefer a series of classical web searches when I think I can get it done in less than about ten searches. I read a while back that LLM inference takes about 10x the computational power of a classical web search (order of magnitude, not exact). Politically, we should have sustainably developed the infrastructure of LLMs at scale as a voluntary collective project of humanity, i.e. in direct opposition to capitalism and its profit-driven obliteration of the ecology.

My approach for dealing with it is using better abstractions like typst.

Fun fact: large energy expenditure even from renewables is subject to the 2nd law of thermodynamics. It heats up the planet.

So I prefer to do everything the old fashion way with principles of frugal computing, offline docs, local editing, and try to keep as much in my brain as possible.

I don't expect others to do the same. It's about how much convenience you want to sacrifice to live a wholesome life.

edit: It makes sense from the perspective of keeping your brain young too. The more you use it even for "tedious" tasks like navigating instead of relying on gps, learning languages, doing mental arithmetic instead of using a calculator, memorizing phone numbers, and writing manually etc, the better it'll function especially after middle age.

Definitely.

There are studies showing that LLMs make you measurably stupid and insane in just a few years of usage.

And it makes sense too. The brain is always changing. It prunes and rewires connections related to unused skills and memories. That's why if you haven't done math, played chess or haven't spoken in a language you were once fluent in, for a while you get rusty.

Of course you can recover if you start practicing again. But sometimes the damage is too great and you can never go back to how you used to be.

Well said, although I'll note you didn't address 'remove education from your brain', and indeed noted recovery if returning to practice. Also 'functionally make you stupid' is a low bar, that's on me :) though I'd be inclined to blame media manipulation before LLMs for that (but LLMs are coming up fast, and maybe are also media manipulation).

I'm usually the one arguing against 'LLM as worker replacement' (only likely in the case of bullshit jobs that are there to save our worker defined society in the wake of automation).

Not sure what to make of my post other than a (possibly unreasonable) hope for humanities future and a belief that LLMs are just being used as another scammy way to capture value, not actually a practical way to destroy human thought. Hyperbolic was probably a mistake.

I believe LLMs are more dangerous in that regard than normal propaganda. You can convince someone that the left-handed people are to blame for someone, but that still requires that someone to think (wrongly). With dependence on LLMs, you don't think any more.

The fact of the matter is, AI can be useful for minor coding help. The reality is its stealing advice from one or a few sources and spitting out an answer based on them, but it can be a quick delivery of advice.

The major problem is

  1. AI (these LLMs) hallucinate ALL THE TIME. Relying on them to code for you is fucking moronic. Every coworker I've seen who does vibe coding is constantly getting dunked on, their pull requests are torn to pieces, and its baffling why they still get a paycheck.
  2. AI can only, in the best circumstances, do exactly what you tell it to do. That is to say, you need to explicitly spell out what you want for it, including explicitly covering edge cases. If you don't, you end up with situations like Microsoft making Notepad code executable (which actually fucking happened.

Promotion of AI is total horseshit by the fascist tech broligarchs being done so they can replace the worker and, and I'm serious, achieve immortality by transferring their consciousness to machine. That isn't a fucking joke, that's an actual belief they hold. The AI and general tech CEOs are all in a massive death cult. This is real.

From what I've experienced it's mostly managers saying this. They're afraid of competitors taking over the market because they can be more efficient with AI. They say this without any idea of how exactly that would work.

Quantity > Quality; no matter what the marketing line says. People who speak a lot in meetings and send a lot of emails are regarded as better at their job, substance is only somewhat relevant. And LLMs are great at producing lots and lots of well sounding slop.

What mathematician?

OpenAI heard that a millennium prize was potentially about to be claimed by an Anthropic researcher and assigned it to a swarm of 10,000 autonomous agents at a cost of an estimated $15 million in inference.

We used a system of coordinating agents powered by our internal model. The agents had access to tools such as the ability to read from a cached version of the internet and the ability to run code. Agents were subdivided into groups with the ability to communicate within the group. The groups varied in size, and the group that produced the Navier–Stokes resolution involved on the order of 10,000 concurrent agents.

There isn't a mathematician sitting there working with a LLM. OpenAI's solution seems to have been a brute force and mostly autonomous event to try to get ahead of other "mathematicians with their LLMs."

I kind of look at it from the point of view of people who are bad at their jobs.

They don't understand what looks good. They don't understand how long something should take. They don't understand how to do parts of their job without copying the work of others. Then, they get given a tool with the promise that the tool will do most of the hard work for them.

And unlike most computer stuff they can't understand, they can understand how to use AI. So if they can understand how to use AI, anyone can. And it isn't like most people are good at their jobs anyway.

There's a lot clearly unemployed/in industry that doesn't spin around AI in here.

In dev, AI saves fuck tons of time. But there's no nuance on the Internet so everyone assumes I'm advocating for vibe coding. I'm not.

What the "fall behind" is referring to is the simplest fact, if you're in a team and you're not using AI? You are very likely outputting at a much slower speed.

Now more caveats, you're not a lead dev or principle architect, your code isn't second coming of Jesus, you need to get a task done. Like it or not, the pace rest of the team sets? Is the new floor.

I manage a team and while I give them a lot of time to get work done well, the world around us is shrinking in resources. Business cares not that a job takes 4 weeks, they need it done in 2, ideally in 1 week.

Hopefully this sheds some light on this. I'm getting downvoted regardless. I'd probably have more popular opinion praising trump than daring say anything positive about AI here.

As a manager. This is an illusion. The bottleneck isn’t in writing the code. In fact, what I see over and over is overproduction leads to bottlenecks in the review queues and a complete breakdown in intentionality, planning, collaboration.

You get pressure to do because it’s easy on the surface to show output, but creating a good product is a systems problem that requires coordination and thought.

We’re seeing multiplication in output, not outcome.

If it’s so good, where are all these killer apps? It’s been years!

I can understand this viewpoint (and it's similar to the first point), and I do agree that there is a push to defer things to AI. But from my limited experience, it's like a crutch for other issues that force it to be used by very talented people who otherwise want to get things done properly to save headaches later.

My experience was in the kind of place you would really not want AI to screw you over in, but there was also a very tight timeline to get things done, so I think they ended up just trusting AI to a pretty frightening extent with (iirc) some buildroot stuff that got some people a bit vocal. I think even I used an AI overview once because I just really wanted to be done with a demo.

It was over a year ago though so I don't really remember what ultimately came of the AI use, but there are 100% situations where this becomes the only option, although I personally will avoid AI unless I'm realistically out of any other option not to. And for that reason I've fallen more out of favour with CS since I enjoy the journey and all the little judgements you make more than the outcome.

AI is a tool. Learning to wield it effectively is a skill. What they're saying is that if you don't learn it now, you'll have to learn it later when everyone is an expert and you'll still be a beginner.

IMO it's a bit like computers. I imagine at some point AI-resistant people will be like the "not computer people" that still do everything using paper and faxes.

I know every 2-3 years there's a new hype in tech that eventually fizzes out: Web 2.0, social media, virtual reality, cryptocurrency, etc. All of them were supposed to revolutionize the world, but not all of them actually did. I think AI is a lot more like social media than crypto; it's here to stay. I think the best possible outcome at this point is that the open-source models eventually get good enough and small enough to run on our local hardware, but things sadly don't seem headed that way...

Yeah, I choose that comparison intentionally. Social media was seen as good early on, but got enshittified beyond recognition. Shitty as it is, it's still very much a necessity in modern life (see: institutions using it to broadcast information, non-tech people using it to communicate and organize events, etc).

AI will be similar, it's already changed how I work: developing software now is much more about managing the process than writing code. I don't mind that much; writing code was never the fun part for me. I also wanted to go into management at some point, but not like this... I'm also worried about the future of the profession; how are we going to create new senior devs if there are no juniors today?

Try throwing AI at boring repetitive work.
I argued with an LLM for about 15 minutes and got a list of IPs and the name of the systems that used them. I could have done it manually in about an hour.

Also I'd argue that it's the opposite. It's for people that are experienced. If you can't check the output for correctness it's most likely wrong. I've never had the right answer the first time I asked.

Spot on. Juniors or business using AI to write code is terrifying. A senior using it can help with some of the boilerplate bullshit. That's what they mean by use it as a tool.

Asfor left behind, its because companies are mandating it, and if you refuse to use it, they'll happily hire the next person who will.

FOMO, and the temptation of being able to get the speed of AI without the drawbacks of "vibe coding".

Reality is much more nuanced.

You can get a massive boost in your productivity if you use dependencies or just steal code, compared to writing everything from zero. I personally just reuse my own code snippets, and even started to put regularly reused code into their own libraries (next up is to make stuff for parsers).

I also seen cases, when "AI assisted" coding had the same amount of issues as fully vibe coded stuff, as the person really wanting to cram the chatbot into their workflow did that trusted Grok too much with understanding the documentations, so he just ended up trying to implement stuff based on Grok's summary, which was wrong at places.

If you ask: artists also sometimes fall for this trap, though much less often.

They (pretend to) believe, either due to experience or marketing or a combination, that AI* will be such a ubiquitous tool within their lifetime that "not using AI" would be like "not using electricity". There are people that do not use electricity, even when it is available, today, but they are broadly considered "behind" the times and out of touch with broader (including global) society. AI advocates are unlikely to always have the same idea about exactly what the advantages are, though speed is often among them.

The actual scientific studies we have done are limited, but so far do not back up these claims. For example, AI assisted programmers self-report being faster, but are actually slower at the same tasks than a similar cohort without AI.

I have a fairly strong anti-AI bias, but my limited experiences with them have been quite poor. Maybe I'm just asking the "wrong" questions, but my experiences have had them either give an response that is internally inconsistent, contains easily refuted factual inaccuracies, or (for tasks with no reality/logic testing) absolutely the least creative, most middle-of-the-road text. I'm also aware of the human rights abuses that Amnesty International has reported around generative AI, the copyright "minefield" around models where you do not know all of the training data, and how we've lost at least a decade of sustainability goals because of the desire for "more compute".

So, keep my bias in mind when considering my reply. I might already be "falling behind".

I can think of some ways to use an LLM that are interesting to me, but for now I'm staying away from the tech until the bubble bursts and the hype disappears. It'll be easier to make informed decisions about what, if any, to use then.

(If it really does improve society, I'm sure I can be retrained then, or at least I can be taken care of one AI-incompatibility is recognized as a disability. /s)

AI: They probably can't define this term, but likely to have a specific product in mind.

There's a truism cliche that, when asked a question to which they don't know the answer, women will say"I don't know" while men will confidently guess.

LLMs are like men on steroids. From time to time they will (by chance) stumble on a correct answer, but mostly they just confidently guess with far less comprehension than even the most stupid man. And yes, I do mean the most stupid man.

I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to be universal, because universal statements about humans and genders are typically wrong. I think in this case, it's more aiming for the "cliché" meaning of truism.

It's a comment on a trend probably driven by traditional gender roles that cast men as dominant and confident while women are to be deferent and humble. If those roles don't apply to you, the resulting dynamics may not apply either.

Levergism. To get what you want in the world you need power to get power you need leverage to the keys to power.

For working class folks that tends to be in the form of withholding labor, providing labor both of which are dictated by supply and demand. So learning a specialty in an in demand field or getting/making tools or skills that make you more demand is common technique. (Organizing with others to be noted also a huge way to do this)

They are arguing that learning AI is like learning to drive a forklift or an excavator. Like sure you could use a shovel or set up pullies but it's just faster and thus more valuable to use those tools.

The difference being we don't actually know what tools and varients of those tools actually make sense. So it's like saying you need to learn to use motors to a 1900s factor worker.

I think a good alternative explanation is this: AI is here to stay, so knowing how to use it in whatever form it takes in your life as a tool is good knowledge to have.

Typewriters are close to extinction, but most everyone these days uses a computer to write documents. Those that refused to learn how to use a word processing application on a computer were "left behind" because now almost all documentation is written digitally.

This pedantic argument annoys me so much. We've called basic ass decision trees for NPCs in games AI for a while now, any program that can make a decision based on data is an AI.

If you don't like it, you're more than free to provide the world with a true all-encompassing definition of intelligence that everyone can agree on, you'll join all the others that tried.

They think AI is as life changing to our society as the internet is as steam engines were long ago. They're trying to promote its use because it doesn't have a good specific use for day to day. If anything AI has made the internet MUCH worse, there's so much AI Slop media on youtube and similar that I don't look at much new stuff anymore because of it.

Seems like some people are looking at the AI chatbot and thinking "this thing is smarter than me."

AI's extremely flawed still, but it's improving. There might actually be a day when it can do many of the things they promise. Supposedly it's helping disease research. That seems undeniably good. Right now it's useful in a few ways, in the future it will be helpful in more ways.

My biggest concern is that AI chatbots will soon start giving alternate versions of history. Becoming a huge propaganda tool. Even more than currently. I am afraid for the day when 99% trust it blindly. And that day is already almost here.

That's what "ai" (actually called machine learning) was actually first created for; researching disease. Trawling through large data sets and finding correlations.

As I understand it there’s a distinction between analytical AI (the stuff that can help identify tumors and such), and LLMs which are now effectively the catchall “AI” term — your ChatGPTs and Claudes. I honestly have no problem with machine learning if it can be applied, as aforementioned. in research and validated by researchers to improve medical outcomes. That’s a wonderful thing.

On the other hand, I used ChatGPT 3.5(?) for about a day when it first went public. I’m sure the evangelists will scream at me about how much it’s improved, how it brings us closer to God or some shit, etc., but I quickly realized its core issues from a rhetorical standpoint and still stand by my assessment. It knows how to say things, and pretty well. It sort of knows what to say, only as far as you can prompt it correctly. It has no fucking idea why it says what it says, short of what it was told to say by the user and constructing plausible sentences.

I see it as these three prongs, just ramping up with each new release. Slap some more glitter on it. Call it “general intelligence” now. Enjoy your own brainrot echoing from your phone. Let’s circle back.

One of my various YouTubers is a tech person and generally against arbitrary AI use. They posted that someone generated a bio summary of them for a conference that hallucinated that they were from Guadalajara, Mexico. AI generated articles started using that fact. Now more AI summaries are citing the articles so they look real.

They're from NY, but it's going to be nigh impossible to correct the record.

Just a common phrase used by people trying to scam you. Basic Marketing really. Create the sense of a time crunch and people are more likely to buy in. People don't like the concept of missing out on something. Same reason they have countdowns on when sales end on websites and even in certain stores.

In my experience, it's an accelerant towards burnout.

And it even entices you in deeper, with the continuing illusion of ease of productivity, deeper, into burnout.

Burnout is no fun. [Note: To be clear, that's "no fun", not merely "not fun". As in, it saps, eliminates and prevents all fun from your life while in burnout. And it takes twice as long to recover as it seems, ~ so the moment you think you've recovered, you're only half way there, and need to keep on having no fun for as long again, despite feeling like you can have fun, and every bit of energy expended on fun can still more readily send you back into burnout and extends the recovery time, tormenting you further. Seriously, burnout, is no fun. ~ Speaking as someone with (at last count) 65 ailments (some of which reduce some people to tears when they hear about), and I remain chipper, mocking the harrowing symptoms of it all, by calling it "fun" (e.g. "oh my flesh is rupturing again, what fun"), but burnout... that's no fun.]

So, I suspect we may see an increase in burnout among our developers. And that's speaking just from the enticing use on an individual level, before considering then also the added workload from everybody else churning through LLM accelerated workloads, having to deal with all the bug reports and pull requests (many of which will be hallucinated, or have insidious malicious injections, many of which will be vital critical issues), and then all the extra pressure to try harder to keep up your own skills against the accelerating spray, and those skills being moved to where your lower level skills atrophy, especially amidst the social pressure, perhaps even economic pressure and pressure from bosses and hierarchies and investors, to "keep up", and quantity over quality lines being blurred in the self reassurance that it's not being enshitified and our atrophying capacity to discern for ourselves.... the demands increasing and capacity decreasing, drives the race to the bottom even harder. So I suspect we may see an increase in burnout among our developers.

Rather than relaxing back towards a 4 hour working week, or to lives of leisure, the driving inertia of society's contemporary socio-economic model would instead have us see this promise of extra potential as something to maximally exploit, for the more that can be done. ... Which in turn drives that ambition even more. And do-addiction is a hard chariot to dismount from, or to slow down. Unlike food-addiction [the other difficult addiction (~ because you have to eat)], the dopamine from a do-addiction is largely celebrated and not shamed nor generally offered help to break the addiction.

All this a verbose way to get around to depicting that... we may see many of those who embrace "AI" more, despite an initial apparent "getting ahead", may be headed for a big long stall and crash, and instead it's they who "fall behind".

Depends how one uses it; How well one manages to titrate ones use. It could be a great pedagogical facilitator. But then, so could the internet... remember...? Remember when the internet was more like a library and science club, before it became more like TV and a bar fight? ... With the perverse incentives of big actors with the most grasp of the steering wheel, we may see LLMs/AI head the same degenerative direction, despite the early hopium promise that it wont be skynet, and will be a paradise generator that helps us sublimate past such societal structural corruption issues. Remember when electromagnetism was going to power the world for free, wirelessly in cymatic cromulence, making us all free and healthy (~ no, I guess not... a bit before our time), and now look and the technology born of electromagnetic discoveries and depictions, the prisons it gets shaped into, by those lacking the wisdom to see beyond their petty parasitic short-loop "well I have more than them", with all it's attention hijacking, with trillions invested in ensnaring our minds [(~ glad I got outta that biz, where that used to be my "just doing my job")]. Difficult to see, if pattern will hold, with all this hopium and urgent socio-economic pressure and terror gumming up our senses. It could save us, you have to or you'll fall behind, it could enslave and kill us all. Hope, pressure, terror. But if we take a step back... maybe we can get a more sober assessment.

Anyways, long rambles aside, really just posing the counter-notion to the assumption in the statement being queried in the original post,

despite an initial apparent "getting ahead", with the demand, the churn, the lure, they may be headed for burnout, and instead it's they who "fall behind". Depends tho.

There is no there there. AI has yet to prove itself useful for more than support at the general public level. Right now AI's most compelling use for the public is as a mediocre assistant not good enough to be irreplaceable but not bad enough to fire. There are scientific applications where the technology is allowing researchers to do things that would have taken years in a few weeks, but general purpose use is still years away from being what people actually need or even want.

People who claim that if you don't use it you'll miss out are like beleaguered parents telling thier childless friends how great having kids is. It's the most basic human instinct, confirmation bias. I made this choice and therefor it must be the right choice so everyone else should make that choice too.

What they mean is that the technology seems to be both moving fast, and spreading rapidly. So, likely looking back to the early days of the internet, people expect that anyone who gains a lot of day to day experience will be more successful at any career that will likely rely heavily on LLMs in the future.

This was similar to what a lot of anti-internet we're told in the early 2000s. People who knew even a trivial amount of HTML could create simple things like a GeoCities page and seem like a wizard to some normal folks.

How true is it? Meh. Not everyone that learned even a decent amount of html in the 90s did anything related to tech on their lives. Right now, that's more about if you're training custom LLMs, self-hosting models, etc. Simply using an LLM, all that "prompt engineer" shit from 2 years ago, is already stale and gone. That's likely what older people sarong "you'll get left behind" mean. They're already left behind.

Just tell people you already run your own 40B Ollama model on a Kawasaki jetski and let them figure it out. Good luck!

There are people in all kinds of industries claiming AI is helping them do their job 30% faster or whatever, so presumably you’ll be “left behind” if you don’t catch up to their pace. In reality, those “30% faster” people are often producing at least 50% worse quality work. So it may come down to whether you can persuade your potentially AI-obsessed boss that maintaining quality matters enough to not adopt a faster but far more problematic process. You might not actually be left behind in terms of producing valuable work, but your boss might decide your team is being “left behind” if you don’t use AI to generate workslop or meet increasingly unrealistic deadlines.

It's very similar to learning how to use a computer in 1995. I'm just old enough to remember meeting these people.

There is this thing, which, supposedly, can help you do your job better, it's being pushed by management, and it is sometimes expensive, often confusing, and obsoletes the skills you spent years to acquire.

Fast-forward 30 years, and it's very, very, very difficult to find people to talk to who still argue computing doesn't belong in the workplace, and that using a computer isn't essential for virtually all work.

The reason it is difficult to find these people, is because they were left behind.

And for clarity I’m not in research or anything, so these people just mean ‘LLM/image gen’, not utilities like OCR or (usually not) transcription.

That still is extremely unspecific and doesn't say much about what the idea is to use it for

it’s always very derivative work to the point where you can find things with the exact same names of other ‘public’ (but not libre) works, and often isn’t the ideal solution to what it targets.

Anyone saying that unironically has a vested interest in AI succeeding and are trying to produce FOMO. They likely missed their chance to make big bucks during the .com boom and they see AI as a second chance thinking it will inevitably become as ubiquitous as the internet itself.

They can generally be ignored and nothing of value will be lost.

I hate AI, but still use it from time to time when 3+ searches would yield no result, or I am already quite adapt to a topic and just want some stupid research work done by a web scraper tool, or when searching on brave search and I just search for a command in bash or something like that on a topic where I don't currently want to learn (maybe because of a deadline). I am inpatient at the moment, pressed for time and still want to try new things. It's a faster search engine for me right now because search engines and wesites became infested with SEO, bots and AI slop, at least I get to control the answers a bit better

Gonna be the odd one out here so I'm gonna start with this. The companies that push AI and the way they are powering large models you'd use only is to the detriment of working class people and the planet.

That being said it's a tool and a useful one. It makes mistakes and it's not as smart as a person but it can make certain tasks much easier and faster. It's like having a fleet of interns ready to rush through something. It makes certain kinds of office tasks much much faster. So if you don't use it and your coworkers do suddenly it looks like you're the weak link.

I've found a lot of uses for it myself. Of course I always need to double check and correct it which takes time but that is often easier and faster than starting from scratch.

I never understood that argument. The same idiots claim AI will democratize everything, it is inevitable. That one would only need to know natural language, "coding is over" or 'x' is over. If it does democratize 'x' for everyone with only requirement being natural language, who would even get left behind ??

I tried using a wrapper LLM for a specific software for a project, and sometimes it gives correct answers, sometimes gives the diffuclt way to implement something, sometimes it hallucinates. At first, I thought great, I wouldn't have to sit through an entire playlist to get the gist of how to do something mildly similar. But recently it has been giving wrong answers. Today it gave answers beginning with "handoff - DENY}" and answers just kept cut off. Sometimes asking a different question, it just resumed the cut off answer from half an hour ago. The stupid piece of shit was wasting my time!! In the end, I just figured it out on my own.

I think NLP is amazing, a computer being able to understand what exactly I'm trying to do/look for is useful. But my work shouldn't be dependent on an LLM's "mood".

Before anyone says just read documentation/tutorials, this is a niche vfx software which doesn't have good docs and tutorials are mostly outdated for latest versions

An LLM can only be derivative. It can come up with "unique" patterns, but only based off it's training data. For something like your use case, it would have very little data to work on given that you claim the documentation is poor. Your best case would be to use a high reasoning model and feed the documentation into it's context before asking anything - but it will only give you answers based on that input. If the documentation is wrong or outdated, you'll get answers based on wrong and outdated data.

As far as "who could get left behind?", I feel that is more people who's job can be impacted by LLMs - programming is a big one, and the reason is largely in my first paragraph. The amount of "training data" on the internet for coding is absolutely massive and incredibly well organized because programmers are nothing if not incredibly pedantic. The result is that the task of writing code can be largely offloaded and with recent models, the quality of the code being produced is extremely good, especially in tasks that are well solved/documented.

It's not a panacea. For example, don't rely on it for security focused applications. But most evidence suggests that if you are careful about where and how you use AI, you will move faster.

Yes there are ethical concerns too. We all know them at this point. So the question becomes whether or not those concerns outweigh the human desire to make an impact on the world.

A lot of activism is bragging rights. Hence the meme about vegans always talking about veganism. But with AI, it's bragging rights on both sides. If you don't use jt you can brag about your environmental concern. If you use it you can brag about all the cool projects you made. Which do you want to brag about?

Call me back when most of these projects actually are useful (a lot of stuff posted in various selfhost community are actually rehash of existing things, or provide no actual useful features), live more than a few months without being abandonned, and are not stagnating messes impossible to fix with issues growing faster than a magic bean.

Using LLM to produce something decent requires a fair amount of work. And work requires time and skills. Something that's sharply declining when you look at the amount of garbage we get. I'll admit that it's a lot of garbage, coming very fast, though.

This was true before AI. Open source projects have always had short life spans. Using AI means that you don't spent forever on a project that might only last a few weeks.

Ugh, a lot of tunnel vision in here. Good open source projects often last years or decades and are holding most of the internet alive today. They used 0 LLMs and are starting to use it today with dubious results. Many professionals ghat used it in programming reported an initial boost in production followed by an incedible boost in deal breaking bugs and higher fixing times: turns out that if you don't directly write code debugging is hell and all the gains vaporize when you need to manually verify every line again. That said, mental atrophy is also worth researching. All in all, whoever uses it in fun projects and didn't formally study code is always the most vocal about LLMs and those who did study and are forced to use it by their boss always describe it as bad. Wonder why

This sounds like a no-true-scottsman argument. Go check github, literally a graveyard of dead open source projects, most made before AI. The harsh reality is that most projects don't gain much traction, and so the owner moves on.

Imo this depends on how you use it. I'd agree with you that I bet a lot of vibe coders didn't take formal classes in CS. So they probably aren't writing great code. But without AI, they probably wouldn't have any code at all. So compared to their non-AI non-CS buddies, they will feel "ahead" and might very well be, if they capitalize on their initial success correctly (like using the initial traction to get investers, and then going on to hire an actual engineer to re-write the project). Many start-ups start with an initial throwaway prototype. Not being constrained by "best practices" is great for prototypes.

I'd add a caveat that those who are forced to use it, and don't make personal projects in their free time, describe it as bad. Part of the reason professiomals don't like it is because they are forced to use it. But when they have a choice to use it, and they actually do, then in my experience a lot of these professionals begradgingly accept that it does speed things up.

I mean, anectodal. I do passion projects, I studied, I used it: bad. As in muddy water bad, not unable to write or not working bad. You delegate and get complacent and it can cascade to a point you become dependent on it. That said, I specified good open source projects, not ALL. The internet is fucking built on linux. If that is not proof of what open source can achieve I don't know what to tell you. You have no idea how many drivers or libraries exist entirely open source still working and maintained today. That said, I'm not here to convince you of my OPINION, I just wanted to share my educated guess on these LLMs. Nobody knows what the heck is gonna happen in the future and the fact that management (uneducated on the topic) is forcing adoption on people that work and know their field is kind of a bad sign. New people adopting new technologies is on par with previous cases, so nothing surprising here. Will they surpass the older coders or will the new AI be too costly to compete or require more expert coders to fix the mess? We have seen all these cases so far happen, so let's wait for the big numbers to tell us who wins. Certanly not the planet lol

As a senior software engineer applying for jobs, over half REQUIRE experience with AI just for an interview. Some require that you interview with AI as well. Still more encourage using, evaluating, and advocating for it in the workplace.

A lot of people think AI makes things exponentially easier, exponentially better, exponentially faster, exponentially more accessible. So, they can do more, faster, with less work. And obviously, if you don't do that yourself, you'll be an inefficient, hard working idiot.

There's also something psychological about peer pressure; if more people do the same thing you do, it's more acceptable/better/the norm, and the various issues becomes less importants. Kinda like when cryptocurrencies would fix ALL issues everywhere at once forever. Funny enough, we were already taking about how inefficient and costly that was back then.

Of course, people using it without any knowledge of what the output should look like find it magical, but knowledgeable people are more… let's say, prudent. The faster outcome is debatable; it still requires a fair amount of actual work to be put in unless you just do the same thing that's been done millions of time before. And worst of all, some people seems to "forget" how to do things without an LLM very quickly, to the point that they'll tell you that some things are actually impossible to do without them.

I am a firm believer those types fall into one of two categories. Those being plants/paid shills or those who don't understand mucb about it being convinced it's a miracle worker and buying into the anti-human propaganda.

There is a third category of people larger than the other two straw man categories you listed who see the potential of AI to automate their jobs, and want to ensure that they are on the side that works with AI rather than the side that gets replaced by it.

So realistically, it's kinda BS pushed by FOMO farmers with hustle culture vibes.

The reality is that the acceleration of AI is reaching a speed where by the time you'd build your whole setup to work with AI there will be a new AI who can set the whole thing up in an afternoon.

There is a learning curve to things like how a model processes information and how to set them up for success. But it's fairly easy to learn and likely to shift quickly.

The biggest gap that I see between people who have success with models and those who have a bad time is how you treat the model.

If you are a jerk, I hope you don't like your production DB or home directory too much.

Things that seem crazy to people who aren't following things, like giving the model breaks to avoid context burnout or encouragement vs yelling in all caps, go a long way.

TL;DR: The methodological best practices are likely to change so fast you won't need to do much catching up, but the relational dynamics of working with AI will likely remain pertinent into the future.

The only thing I think it might be relevant for is coding really although I have not used it much for that. I feel its good for people to use it at the very least to actually understand its limitations. I often say people should use it on things they know well so that they can get an idea for the level of caution you should take if using it for something you don't know about. Outside of that it really is, to me, a lot like terminal vs gui. its something that is easier to do and there is less to learn long term about it. So awhile back people might say a programmer needs to do visual programming or get left behind but plenty still code in a text editor.

It's honestly not very good for that either. Any code it generates tends to either just not work or be really inefficient and insecure.

At best, you could use code to give a basic summary on what the code you're looking at does and us it to spot potential bugs. But you should only treat it as a bug report where it's a starting point on manually finding a fix. Don't let an LLM do bugfixes on its own because it'll most likely make several more bugs in the process

A preamble you didn't ask for (feel free to skip if you don't wanna talk shit on my views. You're welcome to talk shit, but I ask you at least understand my position first.) I don't like AI because of the societal, economic, environmental, and imperialist effects of it. Actually, I despise it for that.

However, LLMs and ML overall has seen some profound benefits from these investments, and there is real, unique benefit to understanding their strengths, limitations, etc.

Nobody who says that is talking about a chatbot, and if they are they should shut the fuck up.

I will also say, I have a pretty strong moral opposition to using US products specifically. Their training is extremely inefficient, their power sources are horrible for the environment, they're being used primarily to disenfranchise the working class rather than benefit humanity, and their data enrichment process are hugely exploitative in the best scenarios, and literal (like, literally literal) torture.

There's truth to the utility of the models, and there are models without such grotesque wrongdoings that are much easier to get behind. China is currently, accounting for cost, absolutely neck and neck with the US in practical capability, and also requires datacenters to minimize impact to the surrounding communities as well as use renewable energy.

My response to the post: LLMs are good for programming and other work around similarly syntax-structured entities.

Yeah, it's pretty good as a search engine for a topic you're unfamiliar with, and getting you a functional thing. Whether software, a study method, instructions for soup, it can probably help you do it as well as you could as a novice otherwise, which much less initial effort and headaches. That's the intuitive use without much requirement of or room for 'excellence' (in the most literal sense).

I think the areas people can become better than others pertain to some things you mentioned and some others; prompt efficacy, context management, estimating effort level, harness optimization, etc.

When you get into the really bleeding edge of LLM-centric development, optimization and yes, engineering the automation around prompt structure, routing, effort estimation and evaluation, contract systems, etc. can mean the difference between 30k waste over the course of a month, or a solid set of product improvements.

For the QA argument, I disagree, at least partly. The people who were never going to be great devs or architects probably will end up as glorified QA for as long as employers allow that to happen. I think, in my own and my peers' experience at least, that AI really does allow more human time to be spent on broader scoped tasks than before.

I don't want to make an assembler or compiler analogy because I think it's tired and reductive, but I think it's pretty on point here; less human time is spent on entry, and a higher ratio of human time is spent on problem solving. That wording is deliberate; I haven't been convinced it will proliferate the work in the same way other advancements have; I don't think it's a given.

Students who use LLMs a lot are overall much worse off then their regular counterparts. Now, whether that means slower students use LLM more (without it having any real effect) or that LLM use is degrading their ability is unknown, but it's pretty clear and extremely damning.

I agree they are capable of that, but I think that's improper use and is deserving of its own slur: meat proxy.

The same result has been shown for calculators, and I think it's the same problem. Overreliance is not a new problem.

I like physical strength as an analogy; you're not going to get any stronger by using a forklift all day, but you're also not going to keep up with other operators if you're loading trucks by hand. Strength can also make you a better forklift operator (tighter ratchet straps, convenient staging, etc.) but using a forklift for everything all the time will make your body weaker.

I think it's analogous, and I think if you're not using your brain as much as you would without AI, you're not using it as a tool and are instead outsourcing your thinking.

Nobody expects a mathematician to do arithmetic by hand, but also nobody will beat a good mathematician without a calculator at arithmetic, either. I see it as generally the same thing; part of the process is (relatively) automated allowing for higher level development.

AI can be helpful, like it is in Star Trek (a very realistically advanced, peace living and equally enjoyed society), but in this 3d low vibration reality, AI is programmed with a dark agenda at its helm. Here, it is programmed to sneakily and deceptively downgrade everything. Quality of interactions, quality of schooling, quality of working environments, basically, the quality of our shared life in its totality. The very best thing anyone can do is stay unplugged as much as possible, remain hyper aware, and sense and honor their intuition. Intuition is the key to living one's most fulfilling life; it always has one's personal best interest at heart.

Of course it’s artificial intelligence.

We’ve used “artificial intelligence” to mean everything from bots in games to Deep Blue, to protein folding and ML predictions, and those are a whole hell of a lot more specialized than llms.

Modern llms pass the Turing Test for a LOT of people.

Are there lots of problems with it as it is now? Absolutely yes. Environmental, ethical, economic, and on and on and on. All this on top of the fact that it quite bad at many many tasks. But if it’s not artificial intelligence, you’re just moving the goal posts.

This will likely get lost in the sea of comments here... But my opinion to "getting left behind if you don't know how to use ai" is simply, "no, you'll be left behind if you don't know how to engineer ai." everyone who uses "ai"'s end product will be in the same playing field, if you don't know how to build and engineer it, then you're in the same boat as everyone else who knows how to put together a sentence and a question.

If you know how to build a custom ai engine that can do a specific task for a specific field, then you'll be ahead. If you know how to write out a question to prompt ai, then you can speak a language, congrats, you're just like everyone else around you. Along with that, if you don't know anything about the things you're asking the ai about, then you don't know how to determine whether it's giving you accurate information, which makes it useless, maybe not 100% useless, but like 85% useless it something. Can you build a house with a hammer alone? No. You need materials, you need ways to cut wood, you need structural knowledge about building a house before you can build a safe livable house and more than one tool in the tool box.

Idk, it's one of those things that just kind of feels like something someone would say about something they were told they should say about that thing. This isn't like the invention of personal computers. I think it's much more simple then that when it comes to how we interact with it, the impressive knowledge is more about how to engineer it, and how to deploy it for specific use cases. Like the difference between building an efficient refrigerator and using one.

The other problem with not knowing how to build and engineer and deploy your own locally run ai, is that you will become dependant on this 3rd party service and end up paying loads of money for something you wouldn't have had to if you weren't "left behind". That's what the big corps are hoping happens with all this free access or cheap access, it's all a scheme to get everyone hooked, so they can pull the rug out from under em and force them to pay astronomical amounts of money to cover the losses they've been gambling with this whole time. Also just my opinion but, seems like a pretty decent theory to me lol.

Just speaking into the void here, don't really expect any replies from me, I don't have that much more to offer, just figured why not share my thoughts on the subject, it's one everyone seems to be taking about at the moment. I'll definitely read anyone's replies though ❤️

You can resist as much as you want but technology and big business are going to keep moving whether we like it or not. Unless we all decide to boycott, which we are too comfortable to do, there is no stopping capitalism. So yes, in much of the business world, if you don’t get comfortable with AI, you will fall behind.

That doesn’t mean you have to do anything with AI, tho. If you never learned to use a computer, or Excel, you fell behind in many business settings. Doesn’t mean you have to learn computers.

LLM’s are not the end all be all. There will be another big AI boom at some point in the future and if it’s derivative of LLM’s you may not have the experience to use the new tech as well as others who are well versed with AI. Isn’t good or bad. It’s just how you wanna live your life. Make a living in spaces that don’t require AI.

I think about it like this: let's say you don't use AI but a majority of other people do. Let's assume AI helps the majority do things faster or cheaper than you (maybe that's not true yet, but it will probably be true soon). In this situation, if you're not using AI then you'll almost always lose to those that are. Therefore you should learn how to use it or else you'll be left behind.

The information in your link is about school aged children, and it doesn't say AI use automatically makes you dumber. It says:

So I'd conclude that kids shouldn't be handed AI when they're young. Not only that, they shouldn't get to use it until they're taught how.

I have a young kid and I don't know what to do. I'm leaning towards keeping them away from AI as long as possible in the hopes that they build a very strong knowledge and problem solving foundation. Then AI can hopefully multiply their abilities.

And that brings me back to my original point. It will likely provide a competitive advantage to those that use it over those that don't, but the size of that advantage depends on the abilities of the user.

The way I see it, AI is like with any other things, such as botox and plastic surgery and dating apps. People vilified botox and plastic surgeries as unnatural and anyone who had them are losers. People who used dating apps were seen as losers. Now, those are normalised and became part of the furniture, metaphorically.

Love it or hate it, AI will became part of human lives, like furnitures. Younger generations will use them and accept them. Older folks like us will think youths are weird and losers, while the latter thinks the former are fossils who can't keep up with the times.

I am personally not against or pro-AI, it is useful to certain things, but i recognise that it is monopolised by only few who don't have the best interests for the many. In any case, AI will be used en masse eventually as more and more people will use it, especially by younger generations. In that sense, those who refused to use AI in any way will be left behind by the times. But whether AI will have ultimate positive or negative impact on human society, only time will tell.

Myself from 3 years ago is definitely behind on me today with AI.

I'm so much faster and better in getting information than I was back then. I had to read Wikipedia pages, some books and 10 websites to get answers. Now I have an AI in my pocket that has already read all that.

People will show up at job interviews with 10 agents and beat the anti AI person.

I don't think our daily lives are very influenced at this point but the economic output for sure is. Who reaps the benefits, maybe not me directly.

Yet I make 250k with multiple cncf, tf, ngunx and haproxy contribs. All shit you’ll use multiple times per day and serve hundreds of billion hits a day 🤷. But that’s just me scamming and tricking my peers and bosses for years right?

The vast majority of coders aren’t as good as they think and there is a chasm of breadth between agents taking over every job fully autonomously and using AI tools to accelerate development and create small hitl work flows.
