It's like most science fiction revolving around this particular topic. The ostentatious need to show off this sort of perverse wrecking of somebody's skin and face is meant to signal something. This is a modern version of being fat to show that you have wealth.

It's meant to show that you have the disposable income to become whatever version of beautiful Trump wants. In this case it's seeking out Eastern European features one faces that otherwise wouldn't house them.

And why everything looks like a goddamn clown mask. They've gone too far too fast and with too much modification. Welcome to repo the genetic opera or so many other stories.

I mean, you're probably not wrong, but also a lot of cosmetic surgery is due to toxic cultural expectations, most of it landing on women.

toxic cultural expectations

FTFY

MotoAsh@piefed.social · 28 pts · 222d (9 replies)

No, it's definitely the culture telling most women they need to look pretty. Most women don't have someone constantly saying, "gee you're ugly without makeup". It's just implied by marketing and campaigns and Hollywood glamour expectations the culture soaks up.

sunbrrnslapper@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 221d (5 replies)

I don't know what other women hear, but I get a lot of "you look tired today" when we don't wear make up - and it was worse before it started Botox/filler. I don't think people even know that they are pushing the culture.

MotoAsh@piefed.social · 7 pts · 221d (1 reply)

Who sets those expectations? I hope it's not your boss, personally telling you to wear makeup. I hope it's not a husband or SO telling you you need to wear makeup to be presentable.

I'd say it's very obvious that the flippant comments are informed by culture, and not yours or their personally set expectations. (I mean, unless you have an asshole boss that does try to set expectations, but I'm not hearing that in what was said so far)

sunbrrnslapper@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 221d

I'm my boss and my husband prefers no makeup, so I'm in the clear there. 😁

I hear it from clients, store clerks, or other random people I interact with. It's the new "you should smile more" for me.

Rekorse@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 221d (2 replies)

Thats only because there's a big difference between no make up and make up. Makeup also specifically hides signs of being tired. Its a matter of expectation, but one that you set yourself.

sunbrrnslapper@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 221d (1 reply)

I don't know your experience with makeup, being tired and aging... I get the sense that people (often men) cannot tell the difference between tired and aging. Makeup hides both. I don't get the comments often from women very often. So I am assuming they are able to see the nuance (or have the tact to not say something).

Rekorse@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 221d

Men dont actively think about it usually. There should be signs we learn of those around us that show when they are tired or any other state, but if a woman hides those signs with makeup, men will just assume makeup equals not tired and no makeup equals tired.

I guess that could be me though and not men in general.

FishFace@piefed.social · 3 pts · 221d

You misread the parent comment. They only struck through half of the word cultural, to leave "cult".

Wanting to fit in with people you don't associate with is kind of weird to begin with. Risking your health and welfare so that you can look like a burn victim is a fucking bizarre bit of mental calculus that seems to indicate something is miswired.

MotoAsh@piefed.social · 2 pts · 221d

I agree the plastic surgery stuff is just crazy. Though the unrealistic beauty standards are definitely a cultural thing. It's only ever going to be a cultural thing under capitalism, whre what ever expectation, realistic or not, that is most 'pretty' will be used in advertisements. It basically guarantees saturation of unrealistic expectations.

onnekas@sopuli.xyz · 42 pts · 221d (1 reply)

You're silly. "Good plastic surgery" is the kind of surgery that makes you more 'pretty' without people noticing that it's actually fake. How are people supposed to notice that you got the money for plastic surgery if the surgery is so good that people wouldn't notice?

Kazumara@discuss.tchncs.de · 15 pts · 221d

How are people supposed to notice that you got the money for plastic surgery if the surgery is so good that people wouldn’t notice?

Somehow this reminds me of the Demons in Frieren the Slayer.

Even though suppressing their mana output at rest would be tactically better, because it would allow surprising enemies in fights, they can't do that because they use the display of mana to signal status in the demon hierarchy.

Sorry if that was cringe to bring up. I'm hoping at least some readers will be familiar and find the comparison funny.

surewhynotlem@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 221d

That's the look. The point isn't to get subtle beauty enhancement. The point is to look like you've had plastic surgery.

It's tacky to me, but I'm not going to fault their culture. As long as it's being done with full knowledge and consent, and not under outside pressure.

daannii@lemmy.world · 43 pts · 221d (6 replies)

I think I figured out part of why the word "ghoulish" kept coming to mind.

When the face is full of filler, the eyes become sunken in.

Just like a ghoul from fallout.

And then they all have small noses. And these too will sink in.

So ghoul.

The thing is, it's almost impossible to have that filler removed. Plus it has stretched the skin. So removing it would make their face look like how the skin looks in an area of extreme weight loss. That's kinda whatever on people who have lost weight/had babies , It is what it is.

But This will really mess up the face. It's not natural.

The alternative is to keep adding more filler until the face is 5x thicker and the eyes are so far sunk behind bags of filled flesh that they look black and demonic.

BanMe@lemmy.world · 27 pts · 221d (1 reply)

Plus the filler is absorbed by the body, but at different rates. So in a few years it's gonna be irregular and lumpy. Some people go to the extreme length of having glass microbeads mixed with the filler (this is illegal in the US) but those migrate around within the tissue. Once you start this shit, it's just a constant Death Becomes Her maintenance operation to keep it from looking worse.

Or as they say in Ab Fab, "pretty soon you're a just visitor in your own face."

Recently saw a video from an ex-maga, ex-mormon woman who speaks about these people and it was specifically about this face. she said they look like that because they're doing drag. i see it. it's performative gender expression.

Donkter@lemmy.world · 18 pts · 221d (4 replies)

What interests me is that I've never once heard an actual explanation. "They're doing drag" might be true in an analytical sense from an outside perspective. But it's not the reason they do it.

One would assume the reason you start is because you're encouraged to get some Botox and subtle touch-ups are a very beauty trend among women. But they all end up with very similar features and it's always overdone. So there must be common pushes and pulls. I would just like to hear it in their own words what has led them to this.

andros_rex@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 221d (1 reply)

It’s more that they do what drag typically mocks - that kind of hyper performance of feminine conformity. Classic drag has always been mocking the way that conservative women perform gender roles.

It’s supposed to look like they got work done, because it reflects their commitment to the idea that women should be always performing “woman.” Women are meant to be looked at by powerful men, and they are acceding to that understanding.

Donkter@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 221d

Again, I agree with you, you basically repeated and expanded on the point of the person I replied to. Like what you're giving me is a good anthropological analysis.

But if you asked these women why/how they got to this point they would not say "well I'm just commiting to my performance of being a woman to appease the male gaze"

For one thing, most of them probably still hold agency to themselves despite the fact that it seems clear they are doing this to appease men. They would most likely have explanations for all their changes and who/what influenced them.

A terrifying probability is that these women literally get told by their spouses/others that if they don't get these specific surgeries they won't be able to do something. If it's that then I would like to know who specifically tells them this and what they tell them.

captainlezbian@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 221d

I can say as someone who's seen similar things in different groups it's body dysmorphia. You focus on a flaw you want to fix enough to pay to get it fixed and it's better, but if you don't have discipline about it you're prone to still see it. It's similar to anorexia where they go from seeing fat that may or may not be there to seeing the torso bulge of having organs and thinking that it's fat.

Then there's social factors. If your social group has worries, well humans tend to echolocate reality off what those around us think and say, so you're prone to the same worries and the same solutions.

djdarren@piefed.social · 2 pts · 220d

digger@lemmy.ca · 35 pts · 221d (4 replies)

The exaggerated features almost remind me of stage makeup. Stage makeup isn't meant to look good close up or under normal lighting, but is meant to be viewed from the back of the theater and under bright lights from above.

There may be a core of this group that was originally styling, using cosmetics, and undergoing treatment with the goal to look a certain way from a distance in photos and on video (but not necessarily up close and in person). From there, the acolytes followed the styles not realizing why they were chosen.

Buddahriffic@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 221d (3 replies)

I'd guess shitty doctors promising things they can't deliver is also a contributing factor. Or maybe just straight up lies about what is attractive. Those swollen lips are such a turn off.

But then again, I'm also turned off by a lot of breat implants but some guys seem to love it, so maybe my tastes aren't the average. Though I really do wonder how much the average person goes along with what others say is attractive vs making up their own mind.

echodot@feddit.uk · 3 pts · 221d (2 replies)

I have to wonder who decided that large breasts are supposed to be attractive. Like when did we have that conversation?

It's not like people are out there having enlarged shoulders. So it's not just the bigger is better.

I'm convinced that plastic surgeons just told these women that men find unrealistically large breasts more attractive simply because breast enlargement is an easy thing to do and it's a quick win for them.

laranis@lemmy.zip · 15 pts · 221d

I do wonder if maybe a combination of mental decline and reduced visual acuity associated with age has something to do with it. The features are exaggerated as if to create a caricature of attractiveness: large lips, exaggerated cheek bones, excessive eye outlining. If you can't see so well anymore those exaggerated features might reduce to attractiveness through a mental and visual haze.

If that's the case, if you could build an AI that takes anything and applies a right-to-left filter on everything you'd see how MAGA leadership sees the rest of the world. Maybe that explains the lack of human empathy if everyone is reduced to featureless blobs.

A big thank you to the moderators of this community for the work you do.

I say this because, even not having read the contents of this thread yet, I know that there will have been plenty of instances where discussions get a bit too... spicy, potentially requiring moderator action. Enforcing the boundaries of civility is a tricky and often thankless task, but an important one. People are angry, and justifiably so. This makes it easy for threads to degrade into toxic chaos, so thanks for trying your best to stop or slow the decline of this thread.

Great video from Life Take Two (ex-Mormon/MAGA woman) about this phenomenon and the reasons behind it. In short: it's misogyny.

GreenShimada@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 220d

My partner recently started watching her videos and I saw this one. 100% accurate. She's incredibly self-reflective and really hits a lot of things as they really are. Genuine brilliance wasted by both the Mormons and MAGA because of misogyny.

I grew up in what is now deep red Trump flag territory, and the District 1/12 level of "we're the hyper-visual freaks focused on image and money, now send me donations, you filthy MAGA monkey!" is severe. Those people rarely see how genuinely grotesque many of these freaks are because it's all podcasts and talk radio and Fox News, which blunts the extreme elements. Noem and Levitt might be the only two the average person would know, and they've only known their mutilated faces, not their real faces.

If you went to a Wal-Mart in any rural town with a game called "ID the MAGA Star!" and gave $100 to anyone able to correctly identify the names of all 6 pre-multination faces, and take $1 per guess, you could go there with no cash on you and leave loaded. I would bet that you'd get lots of totally unironic pushback that Loomer is trans.

I swear, even the porn industry seems less misogynistic than MAGA when it comes to pressure to change your body.

I don't there's any difference at all that can't be explained by makeup.

(I'm guessing the eyebrows are tattooed on and the lips are filled, but in theory I think it could be achieved with brow powder and over lining the lips.)

RBWells@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 221d

I think that's a no, once you are 40 or so. The whole face kind of drops (everyone, not just ladies, that's why you see the bottom teeth when The Rock smiles now - being in great shape doesn't change this) and if you fill the top lip it ends up looking sneery because the shape is wrong. You would have to get the whole expensive and brutal face lift to move everything up first.

On really young people it can work ok IMO.

And overall I agree that GOOD work you don't really see, all the relentless skincare I do works but nothing will keep you from moving through time. Celebrities who just look good and like they haven't had work done have had face-lifts.

Lileath@lemmy.blahaj.zone · -4 pts · 221d (6 replies)

Whats the issue so many people have with her killing a puppy? At least she killed the animal herself unlike the vast majority of people who eat the flesh of animals that got tortured their whole lives.

ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 221d (2 replies)

She killed it because she couldn't train it. It did something she didn't like and instead of training it properly or giving it up she shot it.

She didn't do it to eat it or use the carcass in any usable way. She shot it because it didn't immediately obey her.

Your altruism means nothing here.

Tollana1234567@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 220d

she used the excuse it killed chicken, but turns out those areas where you use german pointers to hunt, they often abandon them after thier hunts for these rich yucks.

Lileath@lemmy.blahaj.zone · -2 pts · 221d

Am I allowed to kill someone if I eat them afterwards? The reason for a sentient being getting killed is irrelevant to it, the only thing that matters is that a feeling life has been needlessly destroyed.

If you eat meat you are as bad as someone who bets on dogfights or who kills animals for fun.

ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net · 1 pts · 221d (2 replies)

Because people see dogs as friends and farm animals as protein delivery devices.

The mask used in Halloween for the Michael Myers character was the face of William Shatner (Shatner apparently didn't know for many years). They made it creepier by bleaching it or painting it or whatever.

Future Halloween movies, or some competing franchise, can use masks of these people. No modifications needed. In fact, maybe let's tone it down because we want to make a scary movie, not traumatize everyone.

ladytaters@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 220d

While I get wanting to make that argument the overwhelming presence of it within the MAGA grouping to me seems to indicate something else. To me it looks like something akin to ritual scarification, foot binding, or skull elongation wherein it's a social beauty standard being spread amongst a group even if those within the group don't care or even dislike.
