Hey @AdmiralPatrick@dubvee.org, you're a stupid dingleberry and I don't like your face. Add me to your shadowban list you wretched cat fondler. Those cats don't deserve what you've done to them.
what this looks like is a PieFed shadowban. I find this funny as I'm not even using PieFed. I was shopping around for an android mobile app, but I guess that one is off the table now, eh?
My understanding is that the list is for having political opinions the guy who runs the project doesnt like (or just doing anything that displeases him I guess), moreso than whether you use lemmy or piefed
The project is for a front end, similar to photon, so just a different web interface that an instance maintainer can use as the ui for their lemmy or piefed instance
(Sorry if I'm explaining stuff you already know, I can't tell if I'm dumb and misunderstanding you, or if you misunderstood something about the situation, and finding the dropped thread in online communication is hard so I'm just trying to explain what I know in case it makes it more clear where the breakdown is. Apologies if it comes across as condescending, thats not what I'm going for :)
Hey, I shared this link in another thread so someone could check if they were on the list and then looked up what copyparty is- it looks like its self hosted so if you'd like me to remove the link please lemme know, I don't wanna generate more traffic than you'd like to be getting if that causes problems

They instead doubled down, it blew up into a similar popcorn level event... Stamets left LW, and now he is on this stealth block list.

Again, I implore you to leave.
Also, no, the actual people that run LW? They're liberals, neoliberals. Liberalism is not leftism. Go do some first year Poli Sci reading if you need an explanation, I'm tired.
The person you're talking to operates on a different definition of leftists that explicitly requires them to be anticapitalist. Given how common that phenomenon is, and how we can't ever seem to agree on any other points, I propose a new definition of Leftist:
A leftist is someone who argues about what is and isn't leftist.
The implication of that definition, of course, is that the right wing talking heads calling every form of human decency "communism" are also leftists.
(Actually, do dbzer0 users even see this comment? They defederated us because our admins also failed their purity test. No animosity from my side, for whatever that's worth.)
Let me start by saying this is is just an observation, not directed specifically at you.
But, this is the issue with left vs right politics. It's not that you're not "left enough" it's that you're practically on different planets arguing which way is West. Both of you orient towards north, and then walk to the left, but you're never going to meet up. And that's because you're not even on the same planet. Your foundations for what basic human rights are is fundamentally different.
A capitalist will say "everyone deserves the house they can afford", while a communist will say "everyone deserves a house."
.world from my observation has been very capitalist, and yeah, that tracks considering it's kinda like the "reddit instance" its comfortable for a lot of people. But I personally would never join as a member, for as many issues as .ml and dbzer0 have, I prefer to broaden my viewpoints than to keep seeing the same capitalist viewpoints repeated over and over again.
Here is a LINK to a long list of citations of extremism, imperialism, and promotion of war, genocide, and violence by the head Lemmy developers and owners of Lemmy ML. People who host Lemmy have the moral responsibility to vet every update and remove all links to donate to Lemmy development or they're complicit in these crimes.
Until something irredeemably bad comes out about the Piefed devs, they're infinitely better.
Wasnโt Piefed adding code to block people from upvoting and downvoting too much? If theyโre on Lemmy a lot they might not appreciate that kind of restriction, especially if they post a lot of content.
I haven't seen anything of the sort, personally. A while back the larger Piefed instance was "shadowbanning" instances they don't promote, but instance owners are free to do as they wish.
There is an "upvote quota" but I've personally never hit it so I don't know what happens when you do, I kind of doubt a regular human could unless they made it their full time job.
Fortunately, another violet has blossomed... she's got a new account, is currently uh... apparently overwhelmed by the number of South Korean fuckbois she has to choose from.
Only a trurly despicable coward could run from our degen queen violet08, the scarlet lady, the night mare, black Madonna, terrifier of decency, our moon empress lillith ๐
I honestly don't know how I made it on the list. I mostly just lurk and occasionally post memes about my cats. I'll take it though, it's a badge of honour.
I feel like Iโm missing a key piece of information here. Wtf is โtesseractโ in this context?
UPDATE: never mind. Other posts were more detailed. Apparently itโs a Lemmy instance/front end? And the owner(s) compiled a huge block list by usernames.
I still donโt know why it matters, whatโs so special about tesseract.
It matters because tesseract was/is used by some large instances, so the tesseract dev was secretly censoring content from thousands of users without their knowledge and even without the knowledge of the instance admins. It's a pretty big deal because this means that a lot of people on Lemmy have been getting a highly censored view of the community without realizing it. A lot of those people, probably even most of them, came to Lemmy specifically to get away from that kind of thing. So its really shady, a huge breach of trust, and this single dev has been covertly influencing thousands of people's political exposure.
That's a great summary, and now so many of the posts complaining about how Lemmy didn't feel different than what they had come from suddenly could have been a red flag that no one understood. Maybe not, but sure seems a bit correlated.
it was only discovered because lemmy.dbzer0.com (6th biggest instance iirc) hosts tesseract and it itself is one of the blocked instances so nothing worked ("this instance is not compatible") and the admin, db0, did some digging
Imagine your email program (seamonkey, thunderbird, outlook, etc) decided you shouldn't get to see emails from black people any more. And never ever told you it made that decision.
They went to great lengths to obscure what they did, reporting it as an "error" rather than admitting to a shitlist - and only they got to decide who/what was shitlisted.
It was a covert attempt to control visible content on lemmy. THAT is why everyone is high hella pissed.
If they said they were doing a "normie safe" interface they woulda just rolled on. But they knew they wouldnt get as many users countenancing that shit so they shoved it in without consent.
Man, I don't have any children and I barely even shop at Target, much less work there. I may be guilty of a lot of things but I swear this one wasn't on me.
I think it only displays Potoooooooo some places (maybe only on .world?), but others still see the original name with which I created the account (ivanafterall).
Some asshat I've never heard of created a api with a bunch of hidden blacklists of instances and users. I wasn't in it and I'm kinda disappointed like many on lemmy. Seems like being on this dipshits shit lists is a nice place to be.
Hidden is a strong word; it's a file named as such, in plain text, with a GUI button to disable it, and has a bunch of humor throughout. I'm not really sure what the big deal about it is honestly, I think it's hilarious and harmless
Edit: apparently I'm totally wrong and the version I saw was a decade fork, maybe? Not entirely sure but I'm sorry for spreading misinformation
not in plain text, it was base64+gzip encoded at the source url to thwart discovery
very not harmless, hidden political censorship is not harmless
and the dev is forcing it on server admins "users can disable the blocklist (if admins allow it), but there will be no server config option to have "toxic mode" (no blocklist mode) on by default"
Well I woz gonna call me account "DaRedGobbo" but the git wot got dere first ain't even revolushunary enough ta get blocked by the blockiest load of blocks wot ever did block!! Paffetik!
lol db0 was running it on his own instance and when he updated to the version with the secret blocklist his entire feed was blank, because his instance (dbzer0) was on the blocklist
Dude made a โsecretโ blocklist that told on itself instantly
A lot of people who know more about what they're talking about have addressed it, there's an admin post on blahaj about it, and the first I ever saw was the dbzer0 post that seems to have triggered the (much deserved) avalanche
People looked at the source code. Presumably because of you tried to post something that's blocked you just got an indescriptive error message, and they were trying to fix the "error" themselves
Tesseract was an alternative frontend instances could host. Despite having configuration options for filtering or the lack thereof, Tesseract would silently both download and enforce a custom filter; this hidden filter could not be overridden by any custom configuration. The hidden filter included regex to block keywords, users, and instances, showing a generic error about anything filtered as being "incompatible with Tesseract".
But that got me thinking. Those of us who aren't on the list have at least one shot of posting something all will see, right? Could we utilize that? ๐
I'm on the list, does this guy just like, have a little black book of people he hates? Like has this guy been reading all my posts or something? Or did he use a LLM to make it
AFAIK itโs just him reading othersโ comments and when he sees ones he dislikes, he says, โ>:โข( Well, youโre a poopyface, onto the Poopyface List with you!โ
What you guys aren't going to beg to be removed, because you've "grown up"? I for one will be submitting my "please take me off your moronic list" plea, post-haste.
It seems as though codeberg and github were deleted or made private and their website is just a "go away" webp now so I can't search through the blocklist
It worked for me just a few minutes ago, so it's not gone yet.
I also don't know how to do this on iOS/ipadOS, if it's even possible, but of macOS's terminal is anything like linux, the command should still work.
Edit:
Tried in termux and the
gunzip > policy.json
part was giving me an error I didn't even wanna bother trying to troubleshoot because I'm on a phone and don't wanna have to set up screen sharing on my desktop just to fix something inconsequential to me.
I also was dumb and got trapped accidentally by going into nano. Cannot figure out how to get out of it on mobile...
I always considered myself centrist, which by today's standards makes me a radical leftist. At some point the Overton Window flew past me and is now a far off speck in the distance. I'm surprised I was included to be honest. I often post things that have nuance, which always seems to piss actual radical leftists.
https://github.com/asimons04/Tesseract - so it's gone? This is so weird. Was the dev building this as his personal UI or something and just decided to put his blocklist in the code? Because if not what was he expecting? It was obvious people will find out and just stop using it. Not a specific group of users will stop using it but everyone. So what's the point?
Edit: So this project was abandoned about a year ago. Looks like the creator had some issues. Why are people still using dead project? How was it discovered just now?
So he came back? Apparently that was the message he posted a year ago:
This project has been discontinued and the repo archived. I am done with Lemmy, the Fediverse as a whole, and have no desire to continue developing for the platform or (especially) the demographic thereof.
So many red flags. People really need to check what they are hosting.
I'm always apolitical because when I try to be political, I sound like a douche and I value my kindness towards others more than I care about popular political topics.
Actually the last thing I argued about was a conservative talking point. But I do it for the sport, not for all seriousness. I just like debating things. But I get myself in trouble sometimes because I will look up all the talking points for my case and win and sound like a douche. So, I try to stay apolitical for awhile, not commenting on politics, because it feels mean. And usually IRL I am a kind person. But online I am a goblin of sorts. We are different than trolls, we debate, we don't argue or joke around. We dabble in the art of rhetoric. It's like some women who call themselves eclectic witches, never adhering to a religion but still practicing witchcraft only instead of witchcraft, it's debate. I will pick the opposite angle just for the love of the game.
I definitely have morals, but I hide them. I hate forming strong opinions because I have schizoeffective and become indecisive. So I try to remain as unbiased as humanly possible. Opinions pollute. Questions aspire.
Why do you think it's permissible to overlook intentional suffering of others to create a more cohesive cultural fabric?
A question about why you wouldn't have an opinion on a pretty clear moral issue. Unless of course you think it's permissible to which I would argue again: immoral or amoral.
I mentioned I have morals, I just hide them because I hate negative attention and arguing. When I go on Reddit or Lemmy, I am in relaxation mode. I think I mentioned I used to just debate for the fun of it. It got me in trouble making just one person mad, makes me feel bad. So, I like to keep myself open minded and I can see perspectives of other people. Many political issues don't directly affect me, so it is easy to switch sides, not for convenience, but because I am very open minded. I may have misworded some things iny previous comment. So I will recant, I have political views, morals and the like but they change a lot with new information and others' strong opinions. I see both sides of the coin and have trouble making a strong opinion on either side. Again this is because a symptom of schizoeffective is indecisiveness. If is partially my personality and partially my diagnosis. I mean no discourse.
Edit: who exactly is suffering and why am I to blame?
The people suffering are undefined but generally outgroups in society as those are the ones that have been historically vilified to pull a group together. See: Jews vs Nazis, Immigrants vs Republicans, Indigenous peoples vs Colonists, Robber Barons vs Settlers as a couple classic examples with their own unique circumstances.
If you don't care until it affects you directly, again I would call that amoral.
If you switch sides on moral issues like that, you are amoral.
If 11 people are sitting at a table making pleasant conversation with a nazi, there are 12 nazis at the table. I hope you don't take it that far, but like... Yeah

I don't. I don't think they know that.
I don't think you do either.
Leftism can be cleanly seperated from Liberalism in this way:
Leftists want to abolish capitalism, change it so much that it's not capitalism any more.
Liberals think capitalism is... a good person, but just, misunderstood.
Also, if I just told you that the LW admin/mod team is... consistently defending genociders, and state sponsored terrorism?
And you say... well I am apolitical, so that's fine?
You are not apolitical, you are in fact explcitly fine with those horrible things, you are saying they don't bother you that much.

I feel like Iโm missing a key piece of information here. Wtf is โtesseractโ in this context?
UPDATE: never mind. Other posts were more detailed. Apparently itโs a Lemmy instance/front end? And the owner(s) compiled a huge block list by usernames.
I still donโt know why it matters, whatโs so special about tesseract.
mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de · 22 pts · 10d
It matters because tesseract was/is used by some large instances, so the tesseract dev was secretly censoring content from thousands of users without their knowledge and even without the knowledge of the instance admins. It's a pretty big deal because this means that a lot of people on Lemmy have been getting a highly censored view of the community without realizing it. A lot of those people, probably even most of them, came to Lemmy specifically to get away from that kind of thing. So its really shady, a huge breach of trust, and this single dev has been covertly influencing thousands of people's political exposure.
Rhaedas@fedia.io · 8 pts · 10d
That's a great summary, and now so many of the posts complaining about how Lemmy didn't feel different than what they had come from suddenly could have been a red flag that no one understood. Maybe not, but sure seems a bit correlated.
thethunderwolf@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 9d
it was only discovered because lemmy.dbzer0.com (6th biggest instance iirc) hosts tesseract and it itself is one of the blocked instances so nothing worked ("this instance is not compatible") and the admin, db0, did some digging

The frontend is the portion of a webserver you see. It's the website after the server has done processing everything it needs to in the background.
Instances in this case means a webserver which is apart of the fediverse, more specifically one that uses the lemmy API in this case.
So tldr, a lemmy server could use tesseract in its code to have a prettier website displayed for users.

Edit: So this project was abandoned about a year ago. Looks like the creator had some issues. Why are people still using dead project? How was it discovered just now?

It was last updated 2 weeks ago, dev deleted project within last 24 hours due to this backlash.

There are posts saying it was discontinued a year ago: https://jlai.lu/post/22505617
So he came back? Apparently that was the message he posted a year ago:
So many red flags. People really need to check what they are hosting.

From what I understand @AdmiralPatrick@lemmy.world/@pzt@dubvee.org does the whole 'I'm quitting forever' thing every so often.
It was forked yesterday by db0 (to strip the censorship) here and you can see the commits made by the original dev 2 weeks ago.

What does it mean if I'm on the userRegexes list but not the users list?
Egonallanon@feddit.uk · 8 pts · 10d
That they assume you have alt accounts on other servers so made a regex to catch them.

What is going to be blocked, where is this thing running? Does it need to be installed on your instance

This account doesnโt seem to be on the list, but Iโm fairly sure an alt might be. Soโฆ hooray, maybe.

Oni_eyes@sh.itjust.works · 13 pts · 10d
Lotta people claim to be apolitical these days. If you're US based, I would argue amoral fits better.
Tollana1234567@lemmy.today · 7 pts · 10d
apolitical, really means they are conservatives that dont want to be called out.
HoneyMustardGas@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 10d
I definitely have morals, but I hide them. I hate forming strong opinions because I have schizoeffective and become indecisive. So I try to remain as unbiased as humanly possible. Opinions pollute. Questions aspire.
Oni_eyes@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 10d
Why do you think it's permissible to overlook intentional suffering of others to create a more cohesive cultural fabric?
A question about why you wouldn't have an opinion on a pretty clear moral issue. Unless of course you think it's permissible to which I would argue again: immoral or amoral.
HoneyMustardGas@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 10d
Oni_eyes@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 10d
Where did I blame you?
The people suffering are undefined but generally outgroups in society as those are the ones that have been historically vilified to pull a group together. See: Jews vs Nazis, Immigrants vs Republicans, Indigenous peoples vs Colonists, Robber Barons vs Settlers as a couple classic examples with their own unique circumstances. If you don't care until it affects you directly, again I would call that amoral.
ACindyDerg@piefed.blahaj.zone · 5 pts · 10d
If you switch sides on moral issues like that, you are amoral. If 11 people are sitting at a table making pleasant conversation with a nazi, there are 12 nazis at the table. I hope you don't take it that far, but like... Yeah

A person who has no enemies, has no values they're willing to fight for.
Being a professional people pleaser is a fantastic way to get yourself abused, and eventually, get peer pressured into abusing others.
