A young woman once did comment positively on my scent while I was perspiring lightly, but I had showered previously, so that probably helped the most.

Definitely a big difference between fresh sweat on a clean, healthy person and STANK!

gibson@sopuli.xyz · 6 pts · 6d

Sweat on its own doesn't even necessarily smell (though it can). Its primarily when it interacts with bacteria on the skin that BO is produced

some_kind_of_guy@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 6d (2 replies)

Not shite?

Tango@piefed.ca · 7 pts · 6d (1 reply)

We alternate our cursing. Sometimes feckin', sometimes fuckin'. Sometimes shit, sometimes shite. Sometimes cock, sometimes dick, sometimes lad, sometimes mickey, sometimes tool, sometimes one-eyed trousersnake, etc. Sometimes pussy, sometimes minge, sometimes gee, sometimes fanny, sometimes box, sometimes cunt, etc. You get the idea. The improvisational variety is half the fun of cursing.

some_kind_of_guy@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 6d

One of the most hilarious moments in my life was watching my mother-in-law casually use the word "fanny" in front of our entire Irish extended family, and seeing their reactions. I believe the verbatim was "carting their fannies around". (As in, she was driving folks to various destinations in a rental car.) She may have also used the phrase "giving rides" in conjunction.

Even little kids say this in America, it's the equivalent of "bum" really, and isn't associated with a specific gender. The reactions on the faces of these people, some of whom we were meeting for the first time, were truly priceless.

Eyekaytee@aussie.zone · 9 pts · 6d (16 replies)

i had no idea if you don’t have a shower before a date you instantly turn into a smelly monster

is this an american thing specifically?

schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works · 18 pts · 6d (6 replies)

The expectation is you shower every day. The assumption is if you did not shower that day, you stink.

It was an easy way to get downvotes on reddit: just say I shower ever 3-5 days and don't stink and people would just assume I did stink and that it is impossible for the human body not to sink without a daily shower.

Sometimes I'd even experiment and say I wash my pits daily and use a bidet. That helped a little, but not a lot. It has to be full body immersion in a shower, or it is ineffective according to the common wisdom.

Edit: i see it's not limited to reddit lol

Redditmodstouchgrass@lemmy.zip · 13 pts · 6d (1 reply)

People really need to learn that everyone's bodies are different. Personally, I've found that buzzing off body hair does wonders for the perception of my cleanliness. Doesn't matter how much I scrub, the smell sticks to the hair. When it's not ungodly hot out, I could (and had to one extremely busy work week) go almost a week without showering.

schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 6d

If I shower because I've been sweating, it's because I itch; I don't smell worse for sweating--at least not if I'm using deoderant.

Wren@lemmy.today · 10 pts · 6d (1 reply)

I get it, I have a buddy who doesn't need deodorant because he just doesn't smell, even when doing manual labor. He still showers regularly, but not every day, to get the sweat and dirt off. I knew him for years before he told me and didn't suspect a thing.

schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 6d

Maybe he kept it to himself because people react with disgust despite all the evidence before their very noses.

Cleanliness as ritual.

kolmaskommentoija@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 5d (1 reply)

It is also stupid, since you can very easily just wipe your skin with a washcloth and use a bidet, or something. Unless you are sweating like a crazy and covered in dirt, it is not that hard to clean yourself, without taking a shower, or full-body-underwater-bath. Just a bucket of water is a lot. "Aah oh noo evryone needs to shower thrice a day!!" no you do not - you need to stay clean. Taking a shower specifically, is a luxury.

schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 5d

Yes, it is incredibly stupid.

"You didn't take a shower? Your arm pits must STINK!"

  • "Well, I washed those with soap and water in the sink."

"That's DISGUSTING. You must stink."

  • "Well, no, what I'm explaining to you is that I washed my pits with soap and water, the same way I would if I were in a shower."

"I'm sure people are just too polite to tell you."

etc.

Gork@sopuli.xyz · 11 pts · 6d (3 replies)

If you're showering regularly, that really shouldn't be that much of an issue unless you have a very active job outside.

captainlezbian@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 6d (2 replies)

Technically true. Fun and interesting are what most people are attracted to regardless of gender. People also are particularly prone to developing attraction to people they feel good being around.

Kindness is however a prerequisite for a large portion of women (and an absolute no go for plenty of other women, because people). The ones who want kindness are much better partners

beejboytyson@lemmy.world · -10 pts · 5d (1 reply)

100 percent disagree. The number one thing that women consider in a long term partner is financial stability. People confuse "kind to me" as kind. The shittiest rich people have the most partners. People are attracted to power and success. The stories come along after.

angrystego@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 5d

Some people are. It's also a question of what the man wants - a lot of shitty short term partners, or one (or a small number) of hight quality long term partners. The latter is better achieved by being kind to the partner.

Maybe something with this?

Regarding human attraction, evolutionary theory suggests that individuals may be subconsciously drawn to partners with dissimilar MHC genes. This preference is often mediated by body odor, as MHC genotypes influence the scent of sweat and other bodily fluids. Choosing a partner with different MHC alleles increases the likelihood that offspring will inherit a diverse set of immune genes, potentially enhancing their pathogen resistance and overall fitness.

rustydrd@sh.itjust.works · 7 pts · 6d (1 reply)

Maybe, but I wouldn't put too much faith in this being the source, because (a) these male influencer types often just transfer (outdated) findings from research on animal behavior to humans (see this "alpha/beta/sigma" stuff) and (b) the idea here seems to be "more is better" which makes no sense even if you were to (wrongly) equate body odor with sex pheromones.

Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it · 5 pts · 6d

They also fail to understand that ""fresh"" body odor (as in: just finished doing some jogging) is different from 2 weeks old stink

That this somehow transfers to not showering leading to positive interactions with women is mere speculation.

Nautalax@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 6d (3 replies)

I’m not up on whatever trend but it may work in some cases provided they’re not just marinating in filth (there’s definitely a difference).

I got psy-op’d by society into being very anxious about possibly smelling around a date since I sweat easily so I ensured absolutely every time before one was a VERY thorough shower and scrub til’ I was practically raw, generous application of deoderant, etc. and applied a light bit of tea tree oil before I went on a date.

On one of the early dates with my now-wife while we were watching a movie, she finally turned to me and said that there was some sort of smell to me that was giving her a headache for the past few dates and asked if I could just not use that moving forward.

It turned out that she actually hated the deoderant and tea tree and so on and actually some sort of wire is crossed in her head such that my natural body scent smells like passionfruit to her (she very positively rates passionfruit). So my early efforts to come off as if I have never had the concept of sweat in my life were directly sabotaging my attempt to appeal to her nose, in addition to making me feel insecure about it when there was really no need.

going light on perfume (or straight up not using it at all) should be borderline mandated by law, so many people suffer from being surrounded by pungent perfume, it can literally trigger asthma attacks!

Keep yourself clean, use like a single spritz of perfume, and apply it a while before you head out so it has time to mellow down a bit. And please god use gentle subtle scents, not Febreeze Facefuck Fury that singes people's nose hairs clean off..

Snowclone@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 5d

Aluminum dust exposure and risk of neurodegenerative diseases in a cohort of male miners in Ontario, Canada

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8504163/

Aluminium exposure leads to neurodegeneration and alters the expression of marker genes involved to parkinsonism in zebrafish brain https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0045653522022457

From nature summary

Aluminum Neurotoxicity in Neurodegenerative Diseases

"Aluminium crosses the blood–brain barrier via transferrin-mediated pathways and can catalyse the generation of reactive oxygen species, disrupt mitochondrial function and promote neuroinflammatory cascades. At the molecular level, aluminium ions can bind to amyloidogenic proteins, facilitating the oligomerisation of β-amyloid and stabilising hyperphosphorylated tau, thereby amplifying the formation of senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease. In Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders, aluminium may contribute to dopaminergic neuronal loss by exacerbating mitochondrial dysfunction and α-synuclein aggregation. Epidemiological studies have detected elevated aluminium levels in post-mortem brain tissue from patients with Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis and autism spectrum disorder."

I wasn't insinuating that you were misogynistic, though I can definitely see how that could be taken from my comment in the context of the article.

I did read the third one, or at least what was available for free. It briefly mentions antiperspirants in passing in the same paragraph that mentions all of the likely much more serious confounding factors (including, for example, actual ingestion) that could be leading to aluminum crossing the blood-brain barrier.

From your links I'm convinced that I probably shouldn't eat or inhale aluminum, but I see much less reason to avoid anti-perspirants.

Edit: I'm also skeptical of your Nature link for all of the usual reasons to be wary of meta-studies.

I'm a trained chef and recently moved into a place with a panini press. Oh my god how I love this thing. It's the ultimate tool for people who can't cook. You don't even need to do anything chef-like, just put ingredients between bread and press for four minutes. Done. It makes rivals to some of my favorite crazy-ass chef'd up meals.

Goat cheese, chicken, tomato spinach and pesto.

Just cheeses, whatever cheeses

Apple, watercress and brie, to impress.

Meatballs, sauce and mozza.

Grill a PB + J, it's a whole new level.

Hell, you can even make french toast with it.

Bluescluestoothpaste@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 6d

That's fine, women aren't looking for a five star chef, they just need a guy who can cook once or twice a week when they're super busy.

Then you can cook.

And that about sharing with others.. I understand, however from experience, there's others who will enjoy the fact that you cooked for them, and there's others who will pick at the recipe.

I know what others i prefer.

A lot of people in the US have really weird conceptions about dishwashers, for some reason. Technology Connections has a video where he goes over it and explains that dishwashers work fine and don't require pre-rinsing or whatever.

Bluescluestoothpaste@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 6d

Dishwashers are a thing but it's just easier to handwash tbh. Once i rinse the dish and use a fork to clear any food debris to make it ready for the dishwaher, it takes like two more seconds to wipe it with a soapy sponge. I can just do the whole sink by hand in ten minutes, or spend five minutes loading and then wait an hour.

It's nice when im running late for work or something but 9/10 times i just hand wash.

better yet, this can easily be turned into a wholly positive thing: They just have to be informed that they're doing it wrong, that the proper way is to shower and then do a bit of light exercise.

Some people will really enjoy the way your body smells, but very few people will enjoy the smell of bacteria poo. Showering removes the bacteria stench so it's actually possible to smell your natural scent.

OR3X@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 6d (2 replies)

The pheromones thing does have some basis in science, but it mostly applies to ANIMALS who use scent as the PRIMARY INDICATOR they're biologically ready for mating. As humans we have the ability to communicate verbally which kinda superscedes any need for that mechanism. That said, I have noticed that after dating someone and being around them for a period of time you do start to form a positive correlation between their natural scent and happiness, security, etc. Note that's natural scent, not sweaty-ass BO. I've had several partners that would love to "smell" me and tell me I smell good even though I wasn't wearing any specific colonges or other fragrances. It takes time for that positive correlation to form though, so It's probably not going to do you any good on your first fucking date.

panda_abyss@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 6d

I’ve definitely dated women who smelled better than others, some of whom I very much liked their smell, others not so much. Dated one stinky lady who was an awful kisser, and we broke up for other reasons (bad kissing was due to a super weird/aggressive technique, not not smell or chemistry).

This has had near zero correlation of overall attractiveness or suitability though. Especially given that most of the time you shower near daily, and if you’re not showering for an extended period you’re usually both not showered and go smell blind.

Old pheromones are diluted in pee.

Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de · 6 pts · 6d

right? if you actually want to advertise "pheromones" (i don't think it's the right term but whatever) you should be taking a shower without using any perfumed products, then just do a little bit of exercise.

Nalivai@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 4d

captainlezbian@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 6d

Yeah a fresh mild sweat can do wonders, but too much or too old is a problem.

But also, just wearing a little scent while being clean can take it up a notch. That way as the evening goes on your scent slowly takes to the forefront. A scent should be discovered not announced, that goes for both perfumes and bodily scents

Snowclone@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 5d (1 reply)

Just to be clear to anyone that buys into this nonsense. Humans don't produce any kind of pheromones at all, we also don't select mates based on smells we like, the only chemical that effects a human's sexual arousal is testosterone and the most readily avaliable source is male saliva, so everything before the point you're open mouth kissing is social selection, not chemical, stop being gross and wash your ass.

oatscoop@midwest.social · 5 pts · 6d (2 replies)

Maybe not "pheromones", but there's certain aspects that make up our "smell" that people can detect. Compatible immune systems (i.e. "could we likely produce healthy offspring?") and apparently fertility can affect smell in a way people are sensitive to.

And sexuality plays a part too. People prefer the smell of the gender they're attracted to.

peacepath@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 6d

The smell plays a role in attraction. Fertility surely plays a role too, for heterosexual relationships… yet I guess the compatibility of immune system should still play a role in homosexual relationships and between people who aren't fertile (due to age or health conditions) since it is not conscious, no? Do you know if it has been studied too?

captainlezbian@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 6d

That last bit is huge. When I transitioned I went from slightly bi to full homo (hormones can do weird things) and went from thinking that most people smelled pretty good with mild sweat to loving it in women and finding it utterly repulsive in a way that I get how some people could like it, but please get it away from me on men.

What I use to do, which worked well for me.

IF date starts at 8:00pm
THEN

  • groom, scrub, shampoo, condition, etc. at 3:00PM then wash and clean you car's interiors (if applicable)
  • thoroughly shower rinse (no soap). Only use soap (unscented) to wash your genitals and butt again at 6:30-7:00
  • I sometimes used a mix of coconut oil with clove essential oil on my clavicles and side of my ribs if I wanted a very subtle scent at 'tongue-to-skin" distance.

Stank, whether is due to lack of hygiene or overly perfumed soaps, shampoos, hair products, etc. is just unpleasant. I preferred for my partners to remember and desire my scent, not dirty stank, not some cologne, and not the soap/shampoo.

EDIT: The placement of the essential oil or any othe scent is important because nobody likes the taste of perfumes, essential oils, etc.

nomy@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 6d (1 reply)

I'm fairly scent-sensitive and it's true some people stink better than others, men and women.

Story time: I was hiking one time and met this vaguely hippy looking couple coming the other way, as we passed they both stank but in a musky, animal way. It was comforting and more than a little arousing if I'm being honest. I wanted them to rub themselves all over me, or roll around on them like I was their dog and they'd come home from a new place.

captainlezbian@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 6d

Oh yeah, a good musky smell, especially in nature with plenty of woody smells, is unnnfffff so good. A natural diet (especially high in plants), with plenty of time in the outdoors and lots of exercise combined with enough hygiene to wash off the stink before it goes stale… Yeah that'll go great things for one's smell.

In a lot of ways some hippies are the opposite of these 4chan types despite some similarities.

AdolfSchmitler@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 6d (8 replies)

"Your natural scent should be a cleanish one" is such a privledged position.

Wut... Privileged how? Because some people don't have access to showers? Because some people can't afford soap? I'm not seeing it.

And if you don't see a problem going on a date without showering or changing into fresh clothes or "acting any way they would at all before the date" then you don't get to complain that women are to picky, they have every right to be. There's a stark difference between "being yourself" and "deceiving someone to get laid".

Ptsf@lemmy.world · -7 pts · 6d (3 replies)

I've also never complained women are picky, and I have a partner. I don't get your position. Seems like you just wanna be right.

AdolfSchmitler@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 6d (2 replies)

Every accusation a confession lol. I wasn't talking about you specifically, but men in general complaining women are too picky yet refusing any modicum of introspection as to why women are not picking them so they just complain. It's like saying "I only eat pizza" and then complaining nobody invites you out for BBQ or something. I could care less about "winning" some internet comment section I'll forget about by dinner.

I just see this incel/male loneliness thing brought up again and again, and instead of knocking them back down i thought I'd try to offer a hand.

Yeah idk what sauce you're lost in but I ain't gonna sort it out.

AdolfSchmitler@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 6d

You can't comprehend my comment?

Ptsf@lemmy.world · -7 pts · 6d (3 replies)

Some people smell even shortly after showering with extremely strong body oder.

AdolfSchmitler@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 6d (2 replies)

That seems like something to bring up with your doctor tbh. Of course you can bring up some obscure medical condition to try and prove your point "right", since that seems to be the most important thing to you.

Ptsf@lemmy.world · -5 pts · 6d (1 reply)

Nah dude it's just natural for some people, it's rare sure, but natural especially for certain diets. Mediterranean diets for example often cause specifically strong bo. It's not something I deal with, but it's privledged to treat it like a medical issue or something solvable when it's just something some people live with. Irregardless, it's just one small piece of my overall argument and I don't really care to have it strawmaned lol.

AdolfSchmitler@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 6d

That's a fun way to admit you have no good response lmao

TranscendentalEmpire@lemmy.today · 9 pts · 6d (17 replies)

but why do we all peacock so hard instead of just fuckin relaxing with each other?

Taking a shower before a date is peacocking? I mean I don't think you're going to be especially smelly if you haven't showered in a day or two and haven't been exercising or something.

However, I think it's just common courtesy to have your genitalia as clean as possible if there is even a slight possibility of them being in or around someone's mouth later.

Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de · 1 pts · 6d

even if you do exercise within that time, just using a separate change of gym clothes makes a big difference. It's spending a lot of time afterward in sweaty clothes that causes the stink.

Ptsf@lemmy.world · -4 pts · 6d (15 replies)

Mandating it instead of basing it off your hygiene at the moment is lol. Just be fucking natural and relaxed 😂 idk why this is so hard to grasp.

TranscendentalEmpire@lemmy.today · 5 pts · 6d (14 replies)

Who is mandating it? It's just common courtesy.

Idk why you think having a quick shower to at least wash your genitals is some kind of demanding task? Is performing oral sex on someone with clean genitals somehow unnatural or unrelaxing to you?

Ptsf@lemmy.world · -5 pts · 6d (13 replies)

That's literally the conversation. My argument is that mandating showers before events is not based on any reasonable logic and that the entire meme here screams of shallow peacocking that won't result in long term compatibility or happiness. You're the only one talking about genitals.

velma@sh.itjust.works · 7 pts · 6d (9 replies)

not based on any reasonable logic

Most people don't want to put unwashed genitals in their mouths or their own genitals.

Ptsf@lemmy.world · -9 pts · 6d (8 replies)

Why are you so centered on genitals?... This is not about genitals or putting them in mouths. Stop making me second hand to whatever fetish this is lol...

velma@sh.itjust.works · 7 pts · 6d

Dating is a fetish now?

Sometimes after dates, people decide to have sex. Generally, one might want to be clean enough to not give their potential sex partner an infection or bad taste in their mouth.

Do I need to explain how babies come to be as well?

TranscendentalEmpire@lemmy.today · 6 pts · 6d (2 replies)

I don't think you know what mandate means? Making fun of people who are confusing body odor with pheromones is not the same as someone giving an official command to always bathe before dates.

the entire meme here screams of shallow peacocking

What do you think peacocking means? I don't know how someone is going to make themselves stand out of the crowd by bathing.

You're the only one talking about genitals.

Do you not think the condition of your genitals may have something to do with why you should take a shower? Especially before going on a date?

Ptsf@lemmy.world · -6 pts · 6d (1 reply)

I know what mandate means, it's fine you don't understand me I don't wish to clarify.

Peacocking is just changing any set of habits to impress over your baseline, it doesn't require any specific or significant signifer and can be hygiene, dress, financial, or otherwise.

I think that you're too fuckin shallow if you think a date directly ties to sex, but hey, lots of people are.

TranscendentalEmpire@lemmy.today · 6 pts · 6d

Peacocking is just changing any set of habits to impress over your baseline

That is not the commonly understood definition of peacocking......

"Peacocking is a social behavior where someone dresses or acts in a flashy, exaggerated way to grab attention and stand out from a crowd"

you're too fuckin shallow if you think a date directly ties to sex, but hey, lots of people are.

Wut? I wouldn't exactly go on a date to acquire a platonic friendship..... Typically dates are tied to a romantic relationship, most romantic relationships include sexual intercourse.

It's hilarious that you think being considerate to your partner makes you shallow. I feel bad for any of your current or future significant others.

Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 6d (5 replies)

Yah, wtf are people on about. How stinky are these mfs where they need to shower BEFORE A DATE?! I’ve NEVER showered before a date. If you shower every day or every other day, you shouldn’t be a stink person, especially not enough to necessitate showering AGAIN BEFORE A DATE. I don’t wanna go out with someone and have them smell like chemicals or flowers or potpourri or some shit. I want them to smell like person.

I’m with my forever partner now so we won’t shower for a week, and they always smell good to me uwu

TranscendentalEmpire@lemmy.today · 9 pts · 6d

I mean...... Isn't it just common courtesy to be as clean as possible if there is a probability of any sexual activity?

I’m with my forever partner now so we won’t shower for a week

Do you guys not exercise or have sex? I don't even have the gene for underarm body odor, and even I would be smelly after a week.

Ptsf@lemmy.world · -3 pts · 6d (3 replies)

Yeah idk. I think they're just high on their own ego.

And they're fine just being fake or high effort, like that's maintainable in a long term relationship 😂. Like fuck bro we all get old, you're gonna be changing your partners drawers or vice versa at some point. Life gets rough, they'll find out eventually.
