Rapper Macklemore is a vocal supporter of Palestine and Gaza residents. During a recent concert at MetLife Stadium, he yelled "Free Palestine!" onstage, projected images of devastation in the area, and performed protest song "Hind's Hall."
Now, it seems that American venues are not willing to play ball with the Seattle artist, and he has been dropped from Ed Sheeran's Loop Tour.
"After discussions with stakeholders, Macklemore will not be performing on the remaining support dates," according to Messina Touring Group, the promoter of Loop Tour. This news follows backlash from organizations like StopAntisemitism and others, such as pop star Pink.

Nothing says "good guy" like compromising your principles for money, right? tf is your argument here?
neatchee@piefed.social · 48 pts · 2d
It's likely not up to him as he has contractual obligations that could ruin more than just his own livelihood.
The whole system is fucked. Rotten to the core
EDIT: these replies are peak left self harm.
Macklemore: free Palestine
NFL Stadium Owners: drop Macklemore or we'll cancel your show
label and tour management: we can't lose all these venues, so Macklemore has to go
Lemmy community: how could Ed Sheeran do this??
Like, how about we point our anger at the people actually causing the problem, instead of the guy trying to salvage his tour in a no-win situation because of racist fucks
OakTree@lemmy.zip · 95 pts · 2d
Won’t somebody think of the millionaires? His whole livelihood is at stake here!
AnyOldName3@lemmy.world · 44 pts · 2d
And it's not like his livelihood is even at massive risk - he's a big enough name that any arena worth his time to perform at will be big enough that there won't be other acts available that will sell enough seats at short notice, so they're pretty likely to cave if he puts his foot down.

THIS is the part that gets me. Ed could have come at Kraft and the other venue owners and threw some hate to ticketmaster for good measure and probably come out fine

I don't really care about him, but this line of thinking creates assumptions and expectations that are almost never going to be met. He is one of the wealthiest musicians, he isn't just a performer, he is a businessman. If he was willing to risk or limit the success of his brand for his views (assuming his views are pro palestine), he probably wouldn't be in the position he is in.
At the end of the day, it is a mainly systemic issue, not an issue of moral failiure. Some individuals will push against the systemic currents, but this will always be the exception, not the rule.
The only way to combat systemic issue is by changing/replacing the system through collective action, not individual action. Ed Sheeran chancling his tour in solidarity with Palestine would not stop western nations from supporting israel. The only way is a nations citizens collectively applying pressure.
AnyOldName3@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1d
If becoming one of the world's wealthiest musicians requires prioritisation of your brand over improving the world in ways you absolutely have the power to do, then becoming a wealthy musician is absolutely a sign of moral failure. It's also not even necessarily detrimental to the brand to associate it with acting morally - that only made Dolly Parton more beloved.
Orygin@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 1d
Macklemore did it, why can't Sheeran do it too? Because he either doesn't hold these views, or he likes money more. Simple.
You can even use the publicity of being cancelled to talk more about the issue. It's not hard when you have a spine.
4am@lemmy.zip · -1 pts · 2d
And the truck & bus drivers, catering, roadies, grips, crew, wardrobe, sound guys. You think he puts in all the work himself?
Listen I'm not defending Ed Sheeran's decision here but don't forget it's not always about JUST his money - he personally knows a shitload of people who are going to lose their next 18 months' income without much recourse if he bails now, who aren't millionaires. Tour work is literally gig work.
TheLowestStone@lemmy.world · 28 pts · 2d
Sheeran has more than enough money to pay those people out of pocket for any dates that canceled.
0x0@lemmy.zip · 8 pts · 1d
No. You think they only work for him?
wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz · -7 pts · 2d
It doesn't even sound like it's his decision. Seriously, how much agency do people really think musicians have over their performances, venues, lineups, etc.? That's all handled by record labels, agents, managers, etc.
If the venue says "not so-and-so" and the record label says "okay," there's literally jack-shit that the headliner can do about it...
0x0@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 1d
He has enough of a name to start his own label.
neatchee@piefed.social · -8 pts · 2d
Yup. People seem to be ignoring the part where I specifically said "more than his own livelihood".
And this isn't even touching on the impact to future contracts. Venues and other businesses don't want to sign contracts with people who have shown a willingness to breach agreements for personal or political reasons.
neatchee@piefed.social · -6 pts · 2d
Did you not read the part where I said "more than his own livelihood"? Or did you just choose to ignore it?
There are so many more people than just Ed Sheeran who would be hurt by him breaching his contract. Everyone working that tour would be hurt. Likely hundreds of people who are doing gig work for this tour.

Is he responsible for his obligations if the stadium refuses him? Sounds to me like he would have made an effort to meet his contract, but someone else refused him.
Honest question, I have no idea how these things work, but have a hard time believing Sheeran had no choice but to give in
neatchee@piefed.social · 3 pts · 2d
Separate contracts. Sheeran's contract and Macklemore's contract are unlikely to be contingent on each other. Plus there are probably terms in the contract regarding conditions under which the venue is allowed to break the contract "for cause" which Macklemore's situation likely breaches

NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 2d
I would tell the "system" to get bent. Ed Sheeran doesn't have to do anything. It's his tour, if they don't want to allow him to perform over human rights, that's on them.
If this is true, I'm going to remove every Ed Sheeran song from my music library.
Clent@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 1d
If the venue is giving him an ultimatum then he clearly has the agency to tell them no. Otherwise they would be executing the contract not making demands.
InnerElysium@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d
Because Ed could personally payout all of the staff working on the tour and cancel it. Because "Staying Neutral" is really just siding with oppressors. Because in a no-won situation you want to support the people who are currently being genocided and not venues paying you big bucks to keep quiet.
You are right we should be calling out the people actually causing the problem, but Eds decision actively helps them continue causing said problem.
Taldan@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d
Macklemore was quite clear in his post: He blames Robert Kraft and not Ed
4am@lemmy.zip · 61 pts · 2d
If Robert Kraft and the other stadium owners break tour contracts over a "we don't like your opener" thing after they already signed, it'll be huge fees and possibly a lawsuit. Ed Sheeran had leverage here and he didn't use it.
wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz · 12 pts · 2d
His record label had the leverage and chose not to use it. There's very little say the artists themselves actually have in these kinds of things.
itsprobablyfine@sh.itjust.works · 11 pts · 1d

0tan0d@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1d

0x0@lemmy.zip · 8 pts · 1d

All them big name artists could put their money where their mouth isn't and build a venue, i'm sure it wouldn't make Bono any poorer.
itsprobablyfine@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 1d
This is, actually not a bad idea. Someone send this to someone like Jack White. Get together a bunch of top musicians to actually fund the creation of a network of publicly owned venues. They can share resources and even pay artists real wages for performances. Call it a public option. Just needs the seed money
wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz · 0 pts · 1d
You realize their record labels hold all their IP, don't you? So they cut loose and go indie and build a venue. What happens when their old label tells them they can't play any of their music?
0x0@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 1d

According to Macklemore, Sheeran was told by venues to cut him, or cancel the whole tour. Sheeran tries to remain non-political as part of his brand. But it really feels like we're up against the sad point where, if just saying "don't genocide people" makes you "political", then refusing to be political makes you a piece of shit.
I think a lot of artists are still riding this line between staying safe and potentially nuking their entire career. I won't act like that's an easy decision for anyone to make, but obviously looking from the outside it's easy to see what the right decision is.
Time will tell. There's still time for Ed to walk out on stage at his biggest show of the tour, throw a fist in the air, and say Free Palestine. I've had zero thoughts about him up until this point, but that would at least give me one shred of respect for him.
nothingcorporate@lemmy.today · 19 pts · 1d
Honestly, this would flip the tables on the venues (ahem, LiveNation)...they're ok throwing their weight around to get Macklemore dropped from tours, but Ed Sheeran is making them tens of millions of dollars...they would probably shut the fuck up if he did this.

Given that the Palestinian people are Semitic people themselves, I would say that systematically destroying their lives, homes, and culture is more antisemitic than any combination of words that any person could ever string together.
statelesz@slrpnk.net · 9 pts · 2d
There are no "semitic people". It's a racist term coined by some German dude ages ago and it has no scientific value at all. Stop making antisemitism about Palestinians.
Equinox1289@sh.itjust.works · 14 pts · 2d
This is true, although, I'm not sure what you mean by that last part.
The term anti-Semitic itself is racist as there are no people of "Shem". The concept is a weird mashup of those native to the Levant and those who follow the Jewish religion or culture. Anti-Jewish would be a way better descriptor over antisemitic, but Zionists love the term antisemitic as it creates a false impression that their enthonational religious claims over the Levant are historically founded over the native Palestinian population.
statelesz@slrpnk.net · 2 pts · 1d
It's simply a term that's historically developed because some German assholes called themselves "Antisemiten". The term "racism" is equally flawed as it implies the existence of human races.
untropvertimide@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 1d
From what I understand, that flaw can be lessened (not voided) by using sociology instead of eugenics/pseudobiology. So-called "races" as social constructs, or "perceived races" are less based on discrimination. This concepts can instead describe the existing discrimination. That does not nullify your point, by the way, it just dampens the flaw you pointed to.

Ignorant comment. "Semitic people" is in the same intellectual genealogy as "Aryan people", the terms were proposed as opposites. There are semitic languages and the term "aryan languages" is not entirely discredited (it appears as "Indo-Aryan" and refers to a subfamily of Indo-European languages). But nothing about any of this has to do with the existence of the Palestinian people and nation which is a political fact regardless of biological or linguistic lineages.
Felis_Catus_Domesticus@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d
It all boils down to race talk eventually, no matter what intellectual gymnastics you perform. One label is as good as another in that game. Arabs learned well from Hilter's ideas after WW2. Whether you want to discuss the "people of Palestine" or "the Palestinian People", then Jews, Christians, Moslems, Turks, Babylonians (and their descendents..), Romans from the Italian peninsula, Greeks, Western Europeans from the middle ages.. all must be considered in the mix and none excluded for any reason. All have either lived or owned/possessed the land for centuries, across various eras in history.
theacharnian@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 1d
That's a load of 19th century bullshit. The Palestinians are a People because they share a series of attributes (language, kinship, culture, common historical narratives and a shared political national project) and use those shared attributes to self identify as a People. I get that it wasn't his decision whether or not Macklemore got booted, but it was his choice not to go down with the anti-genocide ship, and he did so because he doesn't want to lose the pro-genocide cash.

I understand the position Sheeran was in. But, at best (I don't Sheeran's beliefs), when it came to the choice he accepted the stadium owner's demands over the moral demands Macklemore is calling all people across the world to recognise.
That act supports the unjust persecution of Palestinians and marginalises the few brave voices like Macklemore's who are willing to stand up against these humanitarian crimes. Sheeran deserves the backlash as well, and whether its his lack of moral fibre, or his ideological alignments, this instance should always tarnish him.

Its definitely hard.
To take a broader point. I think thats the thing people like Sheeran need to get about the times we're in, due to the disintegration of the 'world order', and the increasing effects of climate change.
The choices we have are now hard and they matter in a way they didn't seem to for a few decades. His decision to not pushback against the promoters, who he claims made the decision, is a political choice.
Unfortunately for him politics exists at his shows, it always did, except the broad agreements have now broken between the privileged and powerful, and the not. Sheerans decision says to everyone he is with the privileged, even if his rhetoric indicates otherwise.

That's... so complicated it's not even worth categorizing.
Are we talking about historical Palestinian or modern Palestinian? How do you define Palestinian historically anyway? The area he was born in was Judea. He was of Jewish faith, but wasn't happy with parts of it. But Judaism was practiced among historic Palestinians too. And not everyone in Judea was of the Jewish faith. And so on.
People moved around. Different groups merged and split.
What I can tell you is that if Jesus did exist for real and if he taught what he's said to have been taught, he'd be fucking appalled at what Israel's doing and would be advocating for peaceful coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians.
Of course the sources about his life are largely from long after his death, many conflicting. Who knows if he existed for real?
mirshafie@europe.pub · 4 pts · 1d
Aren't modern Palestinians quite closely related to the people who used to live in historical Palestine 2000 years ago?
kreskin@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1d
Palestinians are much more semitic than Israelis, which is why Israelis keep genetic ancestry testing (that one test specifically, while other genetic tests are permitted) a state secret and it takes a court order and a careful secrecy around results to get tested there.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_IZSSS2V-M
Except for a handful of actually real semitic people, Israelis are mostly eastern Europeans and Russians stealing land and cosplaying to do it. They even resurrected hebrew, a language that had been dead and forgotten for 2000 years as part of that cosplay. They had to completely make up a bunch of words and grammar to do this.
https://www.nationalgeographic.com/history/article/hebrew-wasnt-spoken-for-2000-years-heres-how-it-was-revived
boonhet@sopuli.xyz · -2 pts · 1d
Well yes and so are Israelis since Jews in exile have historically kept themselves a bit isolated from other groups, but Palestinians (or their predecessors) and Judeans intermingled more in the olden times than Palestinians and Israelis do now. If you go back further than Jesus' era, they share common ancestry. The distinction has grown bigger over time.
Additionally, historic Palestine was mostly Jewish before Islam took hold. So there were fewer cultural differences back then too. Even now, there are Jews (both religion and ethnicity) in Palestine and Arabs and Muslims (largely overlapping) in Israel, with many of those Arabs being Palestinian Arabs.
Makes the whole conflict look even more stupid, doesn't it?
kreskin@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d
so it just.. took hold? Sort of organically? By "Islam took hold" you are glossing over an anti-roman/anti-greek genocide, and arrival of what they claimed was their end-of-days messiah (Simon Bar Kokhba), which started the 3 Roman-Jewish wars, and then the counter-genocide the romans launched which destroyed the temple in Jerusalem, scattered the jewish faith, changed it from a temple sacrifice based religion to a decentralize rabbinic one. After which the hebrew language disappeared for 2000 years, and was only very recently recreated and resurrected from fragments of purely written word. I think that history is worth mentioning. Those 3 wars depopulated much of the SE Mediterranean and were an important part of the history of the region that is still echoing today. If we forget history we encourage people to just create whatever stories serve their modern politics. Thats not healthy. We all deserve the truth.

I'm willing to bet Sheeran had very little to say about this, in my limited understanding of how these things work it was negotiations between touring company agents, insurance and venues.
This says a lot more about the capture of American politics by supposedly non-political organisations than it says anything about Ed Sheeran's politics or his music.
Edit: didn't read the article properly, it clearly states that Sheeran had a role in this but recognises that he was put in a position of being pressured into a decision. If he had more of a backbone, he might've been willng to push back harder even of it meant putting the tour dates at risk.
zqps@sh.itjust.works · 20 pts · 1d
Macklemore posted a statement on this that is nuanced in that it calls Ed a close and valued friend and shows a lot of understanding for exactly this dynamic (it's primarily the venues), while also making it very clear that Ed Sheeran considers himself "apolitical", which means aligning yourself with the status quo and siding with the oppressor, and that for Macklemore himself it's a matter of duty to use his platform to not do that.
wewbull@feddit.uk · 6 pts · 1d
I don't really believe anyone is "apolitical". You can choose to distance a yourself from politics, but sometimes it comes to you. Sheeran is in that second situation.
It shouldn't be hard for him to take a milquetoast "all loss of life is tragic" position at the very least.

Robert Kraft should sell the team and buy a soccer team in israel where he can actually be patriotic instead of pretending to do so for America while propping up a terrorist state.
Fun fact, all Israelis are required to take part in their genocidal military. So they are all military targets. Just like they say about the babies they kill. Those Israeli students will one day be in the Idf, so free reign right? Let’s be consistent.

I’ve seen AJR in tour twice. Once in 2022 when they did their OK Orchestra Tour. There’s a song in there called “3 O’clock Things”. The lyrics at the end of the song are:
Then a breakdown and everyone in the crowd screamed that line.
AJR is definitely not as big as Ed Sheeran, but they have been very open about supporting the left, performing at Joe Biden’s inauguration and refusing to go to Trump’s. I wish more artists had a backbone. It’s not like you’re going to be poor and broke. They have all the leverage. It would be so easy for them to make a change.

It's really upsetting when people equate human rights support with antisemitism.
Human rights support does not mean anti-Israel.
Being against genocide and being for human rights and supporting Israel's ability to defend itself against Hamas and also saying Israel is committing human rights violations are not logically inconsistent positions.
It does bother me when support for Gazans treads into the realm of antisemitism, that does sometimes happen, antisemitism is increasing and is awful, and also, there's no indication that I see that Macklemore was being antisemitic.
Pink mentioned in her response he once had a Same Love performance in which he was making fun of Jewish people. I haven't seen that, I can't find it online, and I don't know if seeing it would make a difference in my view of this.
im_fine_sandy@nord.pub · 1 pts · 1d
I dont understand why antisemitism seems to be such a compelling issue?
It seems everyone is willing to accept racism, and discrimination against transgender people, but the moment someone says free Palestine they're branded an antisemite and can't even perform in a show?

Yep Ed should have cancelled the rest of the tour. No need to worry about all the lower paid people in the entourage who would suddenly be out of work. No need to worry about the fans that bought tickets and made travel arrangements that will be out money for the cancellation. I feel he was probably put in no win situation and all the people ragging on him now would be ragging on him if he had cancelled as well.

Well macklemore is straight up an antisemite. Here he is performing in a "Jewish" costume.
kreskin@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 1d
It was a costume he wore as part of a skit to move through a crowd before climbing on stage for a performance. It was part of an act and had nothing to do with judaism. Afterward he apologized when seth-the-dipshit-rogan whined/complained about it, and the ADL accepted Mackelmore's apology and said it was fine. If its good enough for the awful ADL, it ought to be good enough for you, but hey go off I guess.
This reminds me of the uproar after that wonderwoman movie when modern soldiers from a fictional country were shooting at desert dwelling children and some zionists complained it was clearly meant to be israelis, because no one else is known for shooting up innocent little kids running from troops in a desert. This is the same streisand-effect lack of self awareness your comment and seth rogans whining is all about.

Thanks for enlightening me with the photo.
So I still believe you can support human rights and not be an antisemite and be critical of human rights abuses of Gazans, but this is the sort of joke an antisemite might make. The again, he apologized.
I really believe people should be able to accidentally make mistakes and fuck up and not get cancelled. But this does put a slightly different spin on things where I can understand why people would question things. Because it's more than just a mild costume, it's reminiscent of historical Nazi depictions of Jewish people.
He may have just genuinely fucked up and not realized how disrespectful that was... or maybe he is an antisemite. But it's sort of like the Musk Hitler salute and "how could you not know what that means or how people would react?" I think Makelmore is probably a decent person based on his history and probably just massively fucked up, but I could be wrong on that, and I really wish I didn't have to wonder.
I still think Gazans are being treated horribly and human rights violations are occurring and people shouldn't be penalized for wanting human rights standards.
sbrodolino_21@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 1d
I fully agree with all of the above regarding support for human rights and the treatment of Gazans, but for me this costume + "from the river to the sea" (meaning ethnic cleansing of Israelis) are clear tells. Even if he isn't an antisemite or he isn't anymore, he should've been a smarter. Would we show the same understanding to a public figure who openly used the N-word toward someone unironically?
I understand why Ed Sheeran would drop him and I don't think it should be particularly controversial.
AllNewTypeFace@leminal.space · -59 pts · 2d
If Pink’s reply (which seems thoughtful and balanced) is to be believed, it’s not due to support of Palestine as much as trotting out grotesque antisemitic caricatures and blaming all Jews for the Gaza genocide.
Broadfern@lemmy.world · 72 pts · 2d
From the article:
“Blaming all Jews,” riiiiight.
Nouvellalia@lemmy.world · 50 pts · 2d
Which is why there are pics of these caricatures and recordings of his "blaming all jews".
Right?
Glytch@lemmy.world · -9 pts · 2d
Here's a picture of the caricature
This was back in 2014 and the ADL accepted his apology for it. So he's at least had antisemitic moments. Does that mean he's blaming all Jews for the genocide? No.
Nouvellalia@lemmy.world · 25 pts · 2d
The costume he put on with absolutely no other jewish or jewish adjacent context or even a little history of anti-semitism?
The one where after he wore it once, he was told by a bunch of jews 'hey that's a jew costume! Stop making fun of us!' To which he responded, ' Oh, shit, I never saw it like that. I can see where you could get that now. I'm sorry." Then he promoted the ADL, never wore it again, and never did anything "anti-semitic" again for over a decade? That is, until this "anti-Semitism" of saying 'israel should stop genociding people'?
That incident? That's the photo you're providing as proof?
Glytch@lemmy.world · -10 pts · 2d
Yes, that is the image I found when I searched "Macklemore Jewish Caricature". You aggressively asked for pictures of said caricature. I gave you a picture and provided the context that the ADL accepted his apology and I pointed out that it doesn't mean he blames all Jews for the genocide.
Why are you mad?
Nouvellalia@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 2d
I'm not mad, but the fact that you feel my first post asking for pictures was "aggressive" gives me a good insight into your emotional sensitivity. I apologize if my phrasing caused you discomfort.
It is very discomforting for me to see the entire major media landscape and almost all politicians in support of genocide and the violent suppression of voices and actions lifted to attempt and stop genocide. I use humor as a way to disarm my own feelings of terror at the sight of such overwhelming, callous destruction.
You responded to my request for pictures of Maclemore's antisemitism, for which Pink is claiming he was just fired for, with a well publicized 12 year old picture. It seemed like you were attempting to pass it off as proof of his current position,.or of antisemitism at all. My mistake if you were just confused as to why it's irrelevant. And my apologies for phrasing my response as if you were being intentionally misleading if you were not.
Glytch@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 2d
Nope not trying to pass it off as his current position. I genuinely thought you were demanding pictures of his past actions. I did not mean to be misleading.
I was classifying the costume as an antisemitic moment, which it was. He has since apologized and made good in the eyes of the Jewish community (apart from Pink) and doesn't hold the views that that costume would suggest.
More to the point, saying "Free Palestine" isn't an antisemitic statement at all.
Nouvellalia@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 2d
Excellent! I'd like to speak to the costume itself. You seem to have a very different view of it than I do, and I'd love to get some guidance if you feel up to providing it.
I see the "anti-jewish propaganda nose" that is very obviously the nose from antisemitic literature over the years, but I do not see any other signs of this being and attempt at a "jewish costume". Every other part of the costume, to me, screams of being a caricature of an upper middle class middle eastern business owner. I have never seen the bowl cut, beard, gold shirt, etc aspects of the costume as associated with jewish people at all.
I understand where Israel resides on an map and the history of the jewish people, I've just never seen overlap with those two caricatures. I am also not saying that Macklemore saying "hey I'm a greasy slimeball brown businessman" is any better. I'm just relaying what I see in an attempt to see what you, and others, saw.
Are racists really portraying jewish people in this way and I've just missed it? I'm sure there is a mountain of modern, online, magat cave, racist tropes that I'm just not caught up on.

"Criticism of Israel, criticism of apartheid, being against genocide in no way is a criticism of you" - Macklemore's statement to his Jewish fans. Doesn't really sound like he's "blaming all Jews", at all.
Pink is succesfully minimizing and normalizing actual antisemitism with this garbage.
