Why is every company right now making it impossible to understand what their app does?
I swear to fucking god, I’ve been looking for SAAS products at work to fill a role, they’re all branded as AI and not what the companies actually fucking do.
Office has like a 40 year plus reputation as THE office suite. What the fuck us copilot? That cheap knockoff OpenAI they debuted before it was really?
Because AI on its own doesn't actually make a return, but by conflating the AI investment with a genuine productivity tool that's making money, you can start to hide your poor choices.

Except Nvidia's product works. It's the shit software they decided they needed Nvidia's product to run that kinda does something but not in a real world usable state, that's the issue
They're being scammed in the sense that NVIDIA is selling a product for a usecase that can't make them money despite NVIDIA advertising (or at least heavily implying) as such.
"Look at all these shovels, you're gonna make so much money if you dig with our shovels, I'm sure you're gonna find the treasure any minute!" knowing full well that there's no treasure, or at least definitely not enough for everyone.
they are trying hard to peddle it to govt usage since they are likely a guaranteed revenue stream, things like palintir is being peddle hard by thiel to multiple countries.(including israel and defense contracting)
It's because when so much money/power has pushed so long for people to make decisions based on money and not logic, we've now arrived at the point where even "the emperor's new clothes" type moments can't rein in the insanity; executives are bonused off this garbage and most employees who do know better--thanks to orgs' own internal propaganda and structures--have given up caring and just publish the garbage and clock out(as they should).

They already did/do that and it's called Office 365 and already have vendor lock-in with Windows, SSO services, Azure, etc
It’s going to fall apart and the industries using the tools are going to adopt a Unix philosophy of dedicated tools that do a specific job well. May take a Butlerian Jihad, but it will happen.
It's already happening, in part because of this and in part because of the unstable, unpredictable US government.
Several European countries are looking towards investing in open source as a way to get away from American big tech because they're suddenly considering US sanctions against them a real possibility, or at least a real threat.
FWIW, Office (or more accurately, everything that was part of Office) was renamed Microsoft 365 years ago, in 2020. That was long before the AI insanity.
Shouldn't it be called Microsoft 250? There are 250 working days in a year. As soon as I'm home I'm using Thunderbird or Libreoffice, certainly not the product formerly known as Microsoft Office.
They stopped promoting "Office" brand when they saw success with Microsoft 365 and dropped Office 365. This was quite some time ago. Now they have just renamed an "app" called "Office" which was like a homescreen for Microsoft 365. I doubt anyone really used it and no one on lemmy seems to even recognize it.
Microsoft 365 bundles other products too like Windows and online Exchange. Guess it was confusing to have both office only and office plus others, and hence they dropped the office only.
As a south american, it's already being a nightmare. I've been enduring a heat index of about 44 to 46ºC, and now the tension from the us invasion in a neighbor country
On the bright side, this change has been around for 9 months at least because they had already changed it when I was doing IT stuff at my last job and it was impossible to find where to actually download the office suite.
A controversial take. Every new feature added to Github has made it more unpleasant to use, and a lot of that is down to Copilot, for me. Only way to get rid of it is to wait for Github to go down again, which is the only thing it does reliably at the moment.
I get the Pro version for free since I've worked on a few popular open-source projects. I'm using it in VS Code and it's helped me write code for systems I'm unfamiliar with. I've used it to summarize the architecture of open-source projects so I understand how to contribute new features. The autocompletion can be pretty good too. I also use it to review my code.
We use Claude Code with the Opus 4.5 model at work, and it's quite a bit better, but I don't want to pay that much for an AI model for personal projects since I use it so infrequently.
Every new feature added to Github has made it more unpleasant to use
Free private repositories, Github Actions, and Github Packages are all pretty useful though. All of those were added under Microsoft's ownership. Actions got a head start because it was built on top of Azure DevOps infra that Microsoft had already created.
They lose money from it (people that used to pay for an account to get private repos no longer need to) which is why Github didn't do it when they were independent.
Microsoft is reporting over 600 MILLION user growth on copilot, basically overnight! Wow, very impressive Mr Nadella. You've truly pushed AI adoption forward. Someone get this man a bonus!
What's funny is their attempts to rebrand Office have just fallen completely flat. Kind of reminds me of when Willis Group bought the naming rights to Sears Tower and all the Chicagoan's were just collectively like, "Yeah, No. We're still going to call it 'Sears Tower'."
Hell, nobody that I know of calls it "Willis Tower." Nobody calls Microsoft Office "Office 365". Nobody is going to call it "Microsoft 365 Copilot." This is just a huge waste of effort by a tech firm that has long since run out of ways to be innovative.

There are probably people for whom Microsoft Office is the only desktop software that they use. There are probably many people in procurement that are going to scratch their heads and think twice about signing off on something that sounds like a flight simulator.
This is an opportunity for alternate office suites.
Its is almost universally the main reason that even a lot of Linux daily-drivers still have a windows install available to them. They fuck up Office enough and there isn't a reason to even have Windows for most users.
That's why they want you to put all your stuff in their dumb cloud, because its the only reason people would keep using this garbage, because they can hold your work ransom in their shitty ecosystem.
That is the whole business model of tech now. Stealing your shit and selling it back to you. That is it.
Do what I did: vm your win machine inside linux. It's how i solved my legacy software / game saves quandry. Just duplicated the win HDD and virtualised it.

I'm not one of the dual booters mentioned, but the desktop version of Excel specifically has several important features that the online version flat out doesn't support. Primarily I'm talking about creating and running data queries, which is useful for analyzing data and generating reports from remote data sources including external files like CSV and online databases. You can do all this without Excel of course, but this shows the online versions are definitely limited.
That’s fair. I’ve dealt with that before, and in my case I had to rebuild the damn thing for compatibility with the web version. When I did, I was able to use alternatives like Power Query M instead of VBA. This worked in my case, but I’m sure you’re right that some features just aren’t there in any capacity.
The external CSV thing is a PITA but you can (at least there) overcome it via adding a “landing sheet” for raw data. Nobody is going to want to deal with any of this, though.

I don't know many people that still call it "Microsoft Office"... They usually refer to the individual apps they use (Word, Excel) rather than the suite as a whole.
Some people just call it "Microsoft" ("please install Microsoft on my computer"), especially if they're on MacOS where it's the only Microsoft software they use.
Some people assume it's part of Windows since they've only ever used computers that have had it preinstalled.
The other day, my mother approached me about Office alternatives. Before she retired, she daily drove Office, but feels like it's changed so much that learning a new program isn't any more friction than keeping up with AI bullshit.
For consumer use, I don't see much difference in Office and LibreOffice. For business, Excel is the killer app, can't do without it, but individuals can adapt pretty easy.
Load LibreOffice on her machine and let her try it! Leave the defaults to open docs with Office so it doesn't frustrate her.
Last time I used Excel extensively was in high school, and after using Google Sheets for many years, going back to Excel feels like nightmare. I don't know how to explain it, but last time I needed it for something, it felt very frustrating to use.

Copilot is the one that renamed Office to Microsoft 365 Copilot app. It even sounds like something ChatGPT would come up with. The circle is a square.
It's happening at a lot of companies. Last year our C-suite cancelled some big IR&D projects (where we were designing real products that could actually be built and sold) in order to dump $300k/mo into renting a cloud AI infrastructure that none of the employees want or use.
That will be much harder. The MBA is specifically designed and controlled by the biggest financial institutions to implement management in a way that always benefits them.
MBA is for people that are not too proficient in other degree fields, like STEM MS/MA. i always seen people in college that kinda washed out to a business degree because they cant hack it in another more rigorous major and also an easy major to complete and not get your gpa totally trashed, more common in a CC school, i always think what are they going to do with a "business degree" once they get it.
Why couldn't they just stick with Office... It's 100% explanatory, short, and to the point.
365 never made sense to me. Is it supposed to represent the year? Like available 24/7 but instead it's there for you 365 days of the year? And if that's the case why the fuck would I care? It's software, of course it's available to me whenever I want. It's not a 7/11 hotdog rotisserie.

Inspired by your comment, I polled ChatGPT 5 direct and Copilot itself, and ChatGPT was smarter than the executive by saying it was a bad idea, while Copilot itself said it might be a bad idea, but it's aligned with Microsoft's vision, which may be more important, but ultimately seemed to have no idea if it was a good idea or bad idea...
So I guess ChatGPT at least is smarter than the MS CEO. Of course Copilot seemed primed to try to favor and vindicate Microsoft's decision. I tried a more aggressive statement that it was stupid to try to get that 'I agree with you by default' and it still tried to soften the perspective in favor of Microsoft.
As a bonus, I asked if it would be a good idea to rename LibreOffice to LibreSidekick. It looked more like the ChatGPT 5 answer for Office to Copilot, saying it's a dumb idea, until the end when it said unless it has an AI assistant like Microsoft Copilot, then it would be a good idea...
If you think LibreOffice is good, then you don't need to switch. If you have problems with the lack of familiarity of MS Office, then you might wanna check it. Though Collabora recently made a better replica UI, which is technically LibreOffice in a suit.
Personally, I'm happy with libreoffice and just don't know about onlyoffice. I'm mostly asking for the benefit of others who might read this thread, but if onlyoffice is good then I might check it out anyway.

At this point I wonder if the last few months of systematically destructing the rest of Microsoft’s reputation is a false-flag action by Linux users who infiltrated the company.
I just set up a brand new HP Zbook for work with Debian, and apart from disabling secure boot and rebooting a brazilian times to get into different parts of the UEFI it went without a hitch, KDE with wayland and all. WiFi drivers work already during the installation, the docking station was immediately recognized. It just works now.
Oh, that's obnoxious. I thought it was another 'button along the bottom', but it takes up the space that should be 'right control'? Bastards. Hopefully you can rebind it to something useful, even if the keycap symbol sucks.
Mind you, I've already got caps-lock rebound as 'control' and alt-gr rebound as 'compose'. My laptop has the 'penguin' key (it's a Tuxedo laptop, no Windows key here) used for Sway. (My desktop keyboard is a Model M from before the days of Windows keys, have had to bind ctrl+alt as the 'Sway Key'.) I've already got some 'useless keys' that I could rebind to other things - looking at you, print screen - but one you could press with your thumb while chording would always be nice.
Those ZBooks look like fine laptops. If you installed Arch on them, obviously ;-)

IIRC this happened in January of 2025. The rebrand obviously failed because I don't know a single person who calls it anything other than "Office" or "Microsoft Office".
In reality the copilot is not their ai, it is the user!! They drain every single click, data, keyboard input, every mouse mouvements for a while now. The strategy is to train an ai to replace the worker. The copilot is you.
I really like libreoffice honestly. In my job I have to use docs but I find myself copying from libre office most of the time. Prior to that, I used to create all my visuals with office and do my graphs in excel. So I’ve tried a few different ways to do things. Libre reminds me of old school products and I kind of like that. Plus it does what I want with shapes. Which is nice when I need to make visuals. I still use excel though, for now.
So all of the Microsoft 365 users become instantly AI users? Microsoft gonna report after months that AI users surged the first months of 2026, stocks gonna go up, shareholders happy.

I think it's time to make a serious push into getting people to boycott Microsoft along with OpenAI. Windows 11 is now a bloated surveillance operating system and Office 365 raised their prices to pay for an AI feature based on OpenAI's LLMs. OpenAI donated $25 million to Trump.
Yeah the online 365 office was branded with Copilot BS sometime last summer I think. Also logging in to the online office throws you to the copilot prompt by default.
Even before this the online version of office was getting so bad that it was not worth using anymore. I've been using LibreOffice for 3+ years now, but every now and then I gave to access a sheet it something with a different PC and still run into this office garbage.
On my phone trying to log jnto office.com would give me a splash page to install the copilot app with no option to just use Outlook. Found out if you go directly to the app subdomain (outlook.office365.com) you could log in normally through the browser. Computer didn't prompt for the copilot app of course, just the phone.
Wonder if that option will go away now. If so, I won't be checking for scheduled meetings on my phone anymore.
Will they rename Windows (Winslop) to "CopilotOS"? If yes, I'll nuke Windows 10 (!) from my SSD, then replace it with Manjaro or some similar simplified Arch derivative, as my main OS.
Wasn't there a report a week or two back saying that they cut their internal sales targets by 50% because no one was using copilot? They must be desperate to abandon decades of branding they have built up.
They are desperate. I literally had a sales person reach out to ask how she could help us use copilot more because they can see literally nobody is using it despite a limited amount of usage is included in our M365 business standard licences. This after me already making a ticket to stop the behaviour of the home page automatically loading the copilot page instead of the classic home page with the overview I want to land on.
I cancelled my subscription when they made the copilot plan the default and switched me to it without asking. I'm now selfhosting nextcloud and using libreoffice.
In order to see the "View - User Interface", I had to go to View -> View -> select Menubar
Side note: for capturing screenshots I can recommend Spectacle, works at least as good as snipping tool in Windows and with the same shortcut as snipping tool.
They really have a massive talent. It's not easy to have such a consistent record in choosing stupid and confusing names, rebranding stuff with no reason.

I have had open office installed on my computer since 2008. While back then word wasn't complete shit I was still using it for many years. But now there is nothing Libre office has that word doesn't so fuck MS office.

So far on my work computer I've had a policy to indiscriminately uninstall anything that says copilot. If I hadn't seen this post I may have nuked it, then spent the afternoon trying to figure out where excel went.
It all kind of makes sense if you look at it from an investors' perspective, which is the only one that really matters to CEOs. You can do whatever you want, but unless a company is an AI company, you can't reach a stratospheric PE ratio and your stock stays "low." You convince investors that you are an AI-first company, and your stock can break free of its shackles and reach its full potential!
All for the relatively cheap price of slapping two letters on everything, AI.
Honestly the hardest part of “productivity” is keeping up with the product names. 😅

I feel there's some marketing conspiracy with the "office" term. It looks like they have been planning to make it disappear because it is uncool for some new marketing genius or it reduces the target markets, I guess. So they first attached a new term, 365, as a transition, and now they dropped the office while keeping the 365 so recent users can still make the link.
The AI bubble was maybe just a convenient excuse to advance the plan.
Plus, since post-covid, return to office is very unpopular, how convenient!

If true, then it is beyond dumb. When I need to do office related work, ie typing a document or using spreadsheets, the most relevant term would be office. Not a term that is a reference to flying a plane.
Of course I don’t use microsoft for anything, but it is wild to watch that company completely forget what it is that they do.
the word "app" in Microsoft 365 Copilot app isn't capitalized. I'm not sure if it is actually technically correct, but i think mentioning that it's an app is awkward anyway. (it only faintly gets across that it's like, a program with slightly better access to files, the OS windows, and the computers resources than a web thing, but i thought everything is enthusiastically in the cloud?) also, according to me, not capitalizing the product name fails to (superficially) communicate being professional ("Microsoft Access 365 Professional™®") by capitalizing it
Everyone already using it is just going to roll their eyes, maybe hate-tweet about it, and move on. CEOs, middle managers, and sales people are salivating open-mouthedly.

With standalone installs you can keep trucking. Service as subscription? That's going to very quickly start dying off as the world destabilises.

They stopped promoting "Office" brand when they saw success with Microsoft 365 and dropped Office 365. This was quite some time ago. Now they have just renamed an "app" called "Office" which was like a homescreen for Microsoft 365. I doubt anyone really used it and no one on lemmy seems to even recognize it.

A controversial take. Every new feature added to Github has made it more unpleasant to use, and a lot of that is down to Copilot, for me. Only way to get rid of it is to wait for Github to go down again, which is the only thing it does reliably at the moment.

I get the Pro version for free since I've worked on a few popular open-source projects. I'm using it in VS Code and it's helped me write code for systems I'm unfamiliar with. I've used it to summarize the architecture of open-source projects so I understand how to contribute new features. The autocompletion can be pretty good too. I also use it to review my code.
We use Claude Code with the Opus 4.5 model at work, and it's quite a bit better, but I don't want to pay that much for an AI model for personal projects since I use it so infrequently.

Free private repositories, Github Actions, and Github Packages are all pretty useful though. All of those were added under Microsoft's ownership. Actions got a head start because it was built on top of Azure DevOps infra that Microsoft had already created.

What's funny is their attempts to rebrand Office have just fallen completely flat. Kind of reminds me of when Willis Group bought the naming rights to Sears Tower and all the Chicagoan's were just collectively like, "Yeah, No. We're still going to call it 'Sears Tower'." Hell, nobody that I know of calls it "Willis Tower." Nobody calls Microsoft Office "Office 365". Nobody is going to call it "Microsoft 365 Copilot." This is just a huge waste of effort by a tech firm that has long since run out of ways to be innovative.

Its is almost universally the main reason that even a lot of Linux daily-drivers still have a windows install available to them. They fuck up Office enough and there isn't a reason to even have Windows for most users.
That's why they want you to put all your stuff in their dumb cloud, because its the only reason people would keep using this garbage, because they can hold your work ransom in their shitty ecosystem.
That is the whole business model of tech now. Stealing your shit and selling it back to you. That is it.

I'm not one of the dual booters mentioned, but the desktop version of Excel specifically has several important features that the online version flat out doesn't support. Primarily I'm talking about creating and running data queries, which is useful for analyzing data and generating reports from remote data sources including external files like CSV and online databases. You can do all this without Excel of course, but this shows the online versions are definitely limited.

That’s fair. I’ve dealt with that before, and in my case I had to rebuild the damn thing for compatibility with the web version. When I did, I was able to use alternatives like Power Query M instead of VBA. This worked in my case, but I’m sure you’re right that some features just aren’t there in any capacity.
The external CSV thing is a PITA but you can (at least there) overcome it via adding a “landing sheet” for raw data. Nobody is going to want to deal with any of this, though.

I don't know many people that still call it "Microsoft Office"... They usually refer to the individual apps they use (Word, Excel) rather than the suite as a whole.
Some people just call it "Microsoft" ("please install Microsoft on my computer"), especially if they're on MacOS where it's the only Microsoft software they use.
Some people assume it's part of Windows since they've only ever used computers that have had it preinstalled.

For consumer use, I don't see much difference in Office and LibreOffice. For business, Excel is the killer app, can't do without it, but individuals can adapt pretty easy.
Load LibreOffice on her machine and let her try it! Leave the defaults to open docs with Office so it doesn't frustrate her.

Inspired by your comment, I polled ChatGPT 5 direct and Copilot itself, and ChatGPT was smarter than the executive by saying it was a bad idea, while Copilot itself said it might be a bad idea, but it's aligned with Microsoft's vision, which may be more important, but ultimately seemed to have no idea if it was a good idea or bad idea...
So I guess ChatGPT at least is smarter than the MS CEO. Of course Copilot seemed primed to try to favor and vindicate Microsoft's decision. I tried a more aggressive statement that it was stupid to try to get that 'I agree with you by default' and it still tried to soften the perspective in favor of Microsoft.
As a bonus, I asked if it would be a good idea to rename LibreOffice to LibreSidekick. It looked more like the ChatGPT 5 answer for Office to Copilot, saying it's a dumb idea, until the end when it said unless it has an AI assistant like Microsoft Copilot, then it would be a good idea...

I just set up a brand new HP Zbook for work with Debian, and apart from disabling secure boot and rebooting a brazilian times to get into different parts of the UEFI it went without a hitch, KDE with wayland and all. WiFi drivers work already during the installation, the docking station was immediately recognized. It just works now.

Oh, that's obnoxious. I thought it was another 'button along the bottom', but it takes up the space that should be 'right control'? Bastards. Hopefully you can rebind it to something useful, even if the keycap symbol sucks.
Mind you, I've already got caps-lock rebound as 'control' and alt-gr rebound as 'compose'. My laptop has the 'penguin' key (it's a Tuxedo laptop, no Windows key here) used for Sway. (My desktop keyboard is a Model M from before the days of Windows keys, have had to bind ctrl+alt as the 'Sway Key'.) I've already got some 'useless keys' that I could rebind to other things - looking at you, print screen - but one you could press with your thumb while chording would always be nice.
Those ZBooks look like fine laptops. If you installed Arch on them, obviously ;-)

Last year they announced a price increase to the 365 subscription along with adding copilot features.
It turned out that they had actually kept the non-copilot version at the original price as a hidden "legacy" subscription.

I really like libreoffice honestly. In my job I have to use docs but I find myself copying from libre office most of the time. Prior to that, I used to create all my visuals with office and do my graphs in excel. So I’ve tried a few different ways to do things. Libre reminds me of old school products and I kind of like that. Plus it does what I want with shapes. Which is nice when I need to make visuals. I still use excel though, for now.

I think it's time to make a serious push into getting people to boycott Microsoft along with OpenAI. Windows 11 is now a bloated surveillance operating system and Office 365 raised their prices to pay for an AI feature based on OpenAI's LLMs. OpenAI donated $25 million to Trump.

Yeah the online 365 office was branded with Copilot BS sometime last summer I think. Also logging in to the online office throws you to the copilot prompt by default. Even before this the online version of office was getting so bad that it was not worth using anymore. I've been using LibreOffice for 3+ years now, but every now and then I gave to access a sheet it something with a different PC and still run into this office garbage.

On my phone trying to log jnto office.com would give me a splash page to install the copilot app with no option to just use Outlook. Found out if you go directly to the app subdomain (outlook.office365.com) you could log in normally through the browser. Computer didn't prompt for the copilot app of course, just the phone.
Wonder if that option will go away now. If so, I won't be checking for scheduled meetings on my phone anymore.

They are desperate. I literally had a sales person reach out to ask how she could help us use copilot more because they can see literally nobody is using it despite a limited amount of usage is included in our M365 business standard licences. This after me already making a ticket to stop the behaviour of the home page automatically loading the copilot page instead of the classic home page with the overview I want to land on.

In order to see the "View - User Interface", I had to go to View -> View -> select Menubar
Side note: for capturing screenshots I can recommend Spectacle, works at least as good as snipping tool in Windows and with the same shortcut as snipping tool.

It all kind of makes sense if you look at it from an investors' perspective, which is the only one that really matters to CEOs. You can do whatever you want, but unless a company is an AI company, you can't reach a stratospheric PE ratio and your stock stays "low." You convince investors that you are an AI-first company, and your stock can break free of its shackles and reach its full potential!
All for the relatively cheap price of slapping two letters on everything, AI.

I feel there's some marketing conspiracy with the "office" term. It looks like they have been planning to make it disappear because it is uncool for some new marketing genius or it reduces the target markets, I guess. So they first attached a new term, 365, as a transition, and now they dropped the office while keeping the 365 so recent users can still make the link.
The AI bubble was maybe just a convenient excuse to advance the plan.
Plus, since post-covid, return to office is very unpopular, how convenient!

If true, then it is beyond dumb. When I need to do office related work, ie typing a document or using spreadsheets, the most relevant term would be office. Not a term that is a reference to flying a plane.

the word "app" in Microsoft 365 Copilot app isn't capitalized. I'm not sure if it is actually technically correct, but i think mentioning that it's an app is awkward anyway. (it only faintly gets across that it's like, a program with slightly better access to files,
