I've had the privilege of working with users with actual computer training. Old ladies who started working on terminals in the 70s and 80s. They were awesome, because they actually understood what they were doing. They could give me an accurate description of what they were doing when shit went wrong. They had real concerns and realistic requests for improvement. And they never blamed the computer when they encountered something they didn't understand. They're all dead or retired now.
Todays computer illiterate workforce is doomed to be incompetent because they don't understand how their main tool works. Nobody bothered to train them.
The complicated thing here is there are so many layers of abstraction to make things easier to use and understand that if you didn't age with the tech, it's really hard to fully understand. That's everything. I see Angular and React developers who don't understand CSS.
My last position, we had classes that set sizes for everything in multiples of 4 pixels. So size-1 is 4 pixels, size-2 is 8 pixels, etc. And everything was sized with those classes. Which means if you ever wanted to resize anything, you have to go to every element and change the class instead of you know, having input controls have distinct classes.
People are layering on abstraction without understanding why and throwing away all the benefits, time to invent another abstraction layer! I had my tech lead argue with me that this was a better system because "standards". I'm going to assume the standard was poorly understood because I can't imagine a multi-billion dollar company hires idiots to set standards.
I got started learning transistors and Boolean algebra and programming an 8-bit cpu in college. Had computers for a few years before that. It's surprising how many conditionals I see that can be simplified by Boolean algebra.
I don't actually hate computers, and I try to give IT workers some grace because I'm not always proud of the work I do when I have to finish 3 months of work in two weeks. But I've worked with a lot of folks who aren't curious or looking to learn and improve, and I have to wonder why they ever got into IT in the first place.
For me the worst part of IT is the god damned management. Any possible productivity gains from agile are undercut at every turn by management who has to have a concrete promise of a delivery date before they even define the ask.
Anyway, sorry for the rant. Started my long weekend early and starting a new job next week, so I have a lot of pent up rants from my last company.

When the security bios update (forget what it was called) fucked everyone's computers last year I found a fix online and could have easily went to several locations and got them up and running, but no one on site has the access to boot into safe mode and instead we all just sat on hold with help desk for 2 days waiting for IT to do the thing I already knew how to do.
Printers are known in IT to be a utter pain in the ass. Most brands are also using a lot of proprietary stuff and it limits interoperability. Drivers for example.
Well known example is about ink cartridges. HP added identification chips on them, so if you want to use an other brand, not HP, to fill your printer, you can't because if no chip is detected despite a cartridge being inserted, the machine will tell you it is not genuine.
Another example with Rycoh. I don't know if their printers still use this method, so take it as an example of capitalist greed more than a current situation.
Laser printers are using a sealed container to process waste created during printing. Rycoh had placed a led detector inside to know when it was full and trigger an alert, stopping the machine and request for a change.
Good idea in theory but in practice the detector was placed very oddly or on purpose near or in front of dust intake. So it was bathed very quickly in electrostatic dust and thus triggered the alarm very quickly, even if your container was not fully filled.
The only way to solve this was to shake your waste storage, hoping it would clean the led enough to keep going for a few days or change it.
Lastly, I have a Brother printer, bought to a neighbor sale. The oven inside, which is in charge of heating the ink, had a failure. It had melted. For the price, it was a deal. I only needed to buy a new part, unplug it, replace and I had a laser printer with colours. Well, Brother had lightly soldered pins linking the connector to PCB. When I unplugged it, soldering came with it. I contacted a repair store near me telling me they don't do it and I should ask for a repair to a certified Brother technician. Which is overpriced. I also can't open it fully as it is placed to be impossible to repair without disassembling half of the machine.
No printer is the same, some brands are better than others. Some are well accepted on Linux with CUPS, some other not. But so far, not one brand impressed me well enough by their design to keep it open, easily fixable and long lasting.
This absolutely applies to me. Iām so sick of computers and software and security and subscriptions and vendors.

It's actually almost a thing - in Moscow State University, during world cup a decade ago, lazer show was projected right onto students dorm. Not that students didn't protest, it's just those who did were taken by police. Not to mention that many students had babies, and few were fans of loud noises or football for that matter. I spent years in a research path core and am just wrapping up my med lab certification, it amused me when they hired actors to come to our program and we role-played dealing with angry pathologists, fuming nurses ect... Most of my clients have been MSc students or MD/PHD conducting research. they might be experts in their field and conduct these brilliant studies then stumble right at the finish line because sample collection was bungled or something ruined during extraction. I've seen some "interesting" DIY fixation and processing protocols to save a little money that did the same thing. I always feel so bad but most people are willing to learn and work with us.
I'm in pathology (research, transitioning to medical) so that was my frame of reference here. Its my job take the samples given to the lab and turn them into slides for analysis but tue results are only as good as what I'm given in the first place (crap in, crap out). same with blood draws, urines, anything improperly collected no longer properly represents the thing it came from. There's one automated system I need to call regularly at work that does not give me the option of dialing numbers and forces me to speak to it. It lists the options it can understand, but I can't just press a number to move on. Then it asks me to say and spell my first name, then say my last name (which it guesses the spelling of incorrectly) and pretends to type while it's processing. Why are we doing this?

It's perhaps not so much Excel, as much as it's just the symptom of a lot of bigger issues: working without version control, without column validation or access control, limited documentation (not necessarily better in data warehouse but at least the functionality is easily accessible), limited automated testing, etc etc.

WD-40 isn't a lubricant. It often works to get something un-stuck, but then you need to still clean and lubricate the parts to keep it working.

Yeah alas the subreddit for it did a lot of the heavy lifting for me - they took apart every study (I helped) and had some good sidebar (or was it pinned, been so long I cannot remember) info to counter the "dumb reactionary shit." When I first started vaping in 2011 (after smoking two packs a day for decades), there were a lot of solid, research-based web boards, but I think social media killed them, as it did so much.
(Diacetyl, the chemical responsible, is also found in cigarettes, 2,000x more than in vape juice, and cigarettes have never caused popcorn lung. The only recorded case afaik comes from the powder form being used in a popcorn factory with no respirators, and it acted like asbestos sorta where it settles in the lungs. That's a far cry from the liquid form that was in some vape juice before the freakout, which has never shown to cause popcorn lung, just like it doesn't with cigarettes.)

As a former life long smoker, vaping (which is the front line treatment for cessation in the UK) saved my life. Now, however, the shops pushing disposable vapes with super high nicotine salts on to kids - which is illegal almost everywhere - they need to die in a fire. The kids don't get hooked on "vape;' they get hooked on nicotina because those damn things are the equivalent of smoking two or three regular cigarets in one puff.

When I unplugged it, soldering came with it. I contacted a repair store near me telling me they don't do it and I should ask for a repair to a certified Brother technician. Which is overpriced. I also can't open it fully as it is placed to be impossible to repair without disassembling half of the machine.
No printer is the same, some brands are better than others. Some are well accepted on Linux with CUPS, some other not. But so far, not one brand impressed me well enough by their design to keep it open, easily fixable and long lasting.

If an animal gets shot with lead, survives and runs away, there is now a wounded animal or an animal carcass containing lead somewhere in the wild.
If it is wounded or freshly dead a carnivore will eat it and accumulate lead. That may be large carnivore or a smaller carnivore that later gets eaten by a bigger one. Birds tend to have stronger stomach acid that most mammals, allowing them to dissolve the lead better.
Vultures having it the worst as they will eat any carcass and have the strongest acid.

Eventually all these materials you can throw under throw rugs to make them stickier end up failing. Catastrophically.
Make sure to get a throw rug that has the non-slip feature sewn in. Make sure it's nice and heavy too and never put it in the dryer (it'll ruin the non-slip part). You should probably air dry throw rugs anyway, actually š¤·

It's actually almost a thing - in Moscow State University, during world cup a decade ago, lazer show was projected right onto students dorm. Not that students didn't protest, it's just those who did were taken by police. Not to mention that many students had babies, and few were fans of loud noises or football for that matter. They are incredibly rude to the families receiving financial assistance, it takes 3 months for them to pay us, and did you know that if you don't have a will they cut your step-children out of the process entirely?
We had one gentleman in our care whose only living family was his step-daughter. Because there were no blood relatives and no will the Public Guardian took control of his disposition and the step-daughter had no say in anything that happened with him. Wasn't allowed to keep a portion of the ashes, the Funeral Director had to fight just to allow the step-daughter a brief final visitation.
This is also true for children under 18. Your 17 year old child has no say in your disposition if you have no other living relatives.
Have a will people, if for no other reason than to allow your loved ones to decide how they will grieve rather than some indifferent bureaucrat.

I spent years in a research path core and am just wrapping up my med lab certification, it amused me when they hired actors to come to our program and we role-played dealing with angry pathologists, fuming nurses ect... Most of my clients have been MSc students or MD/PHD conducting research. they might be experts in their field and conduct these brilliant studies then stumble right at the finish line because sample collection was bungled or something ruined during extraction. I've seen some "interesting" DIY fixation and processing protocols to save a little money that did the same thing. I always feel so bad but most people are willing to learn and work with us.

There's one automated system I need to call regularly at work that does not give me the option of dialing numbers and forces me to speak to it. It lists the options it can understand, but I can't just press a number to move on. It's perhaps not so much Excel, as much as it's just the symptom of a lot of bigger issues: working without version control, without column validation or access control, limited documentation (not necessarily better in data warehouse but at least the functionality is easily accessible), limited automated testing, etc etc.
If only they could keep their data for themselves, then ok. but no no, we have to ingest it, and do work on top of it in dwh, and it just breaks so often due to a variety of different stuff.

Wait you mean your organization doesn't use some ludicrously expensive hosted database solution or 3 to aggregate data then instead of natively working with the data in that database it gets exported and transformed on a local machine which may or may not havd backups then ask the database people about weird data quirks coming from the local transformations performed on the data

There are plenty of times I'll watch someone play a game and then get confused about how to do something in it because they either don't look at the controls in settings or breeze past it or don't read what a quest entails. They just play on in a braindead like trance and get confused and angry as to why the game that gives you everything you need to know doesn't tell them something vital like a certain control they need.

One of those candidates for 'worst memorable phrase in history' is the old "duct-tape for things that move and shouldn't and wd-40 for things that should move and don't".
WD-40 isn't a lubricant. It often works to get something un-stuck, but then you need to still clean and lubricate the parts to keep it working.

IANAL, but people use it on squeaky hinges and knobs and locks, but it sits in the mechanism and collects dust. It turns into a gummy mess eventually, which is the last thing you would want in a lock.

Not saying that teacher didn't suck, but method can be important in earlier math classes. So much of early math is about developing number sense and just understanding what is being represented by a mathematical statement. If a method is a stand in for a larger level comprehension, say, showing that 3*2 is also represented by three rows of two, ie

I used to do fleet management. It's so bad. I never would have believed how many people take clearance signs as suggestions.
And the class D (regular license) drivers test should include a "show me where the truck driver can and can't see you" portion.

I haven't read the DOT code in a while, so I genuinely don't recall if they're mandated, but I recall that all my trucks had them.
This is of absolutely no use in preventing people from a close merge on the passenger side where the driver definitely cannot see. Often the driver's first indication that this has occurred is the crunch. I've never seen one of these accidents that wasn't completely avoidable.

Data? No, because there is none. And I have read every.single.study. They are all fucked in some way or another whether it's methodology or the stats or the sample size/composition. Not a single real in vivo study. None. There is exactly one researcher in Greece doing decent work, and that's it. I took a career change from my previous and now present career and worked in pharma and biotech research.

Former smoker, current vaper. I know inhaling anything other than clean air isn't good for me, and I know nicotine addiction isn't good. I plan on quitting, and I'm making decent progress to that point.
But it bugs the shit out of me when people try to act like it's worse than cigarettes. It's not. Shitty Chinese vapes marketed to kids that we don't know the ingredients of? Sure, ban em. Black market vapes made in some dudes garage with oil? Absolutely track em down and end that man's whole career.
But properly made, regulated vape juice in a rebuildable tank? Leave me the fuck alone. Please. Please do not take the thing that has helped millions of people quit smoking!

Yeah alas the subreddit for it did a lot of the heavy lifting for me - they took apart every study (I helped) and had some good sidebar (or was it pinned, been so long I cannot remember) info to counter the "dumb reactionary shit." I am pretty sure the sub got baninated, but I haven't been back to reddit since I rage quit after the API debacle.
When I first started vaping in 2011 (after smoking two packs a day for decades), there were a lot of solid, research-based web boards, but I think social media killed them, as it did so much.

(Diacetyl, the chemical responsible, is also found in cigarettes, 2,000x more than in vape juice, and cigarettes have never caused popcorn lung. The only recorded case afaik comes from the powder form being used in a popcorn factory with no respirators, and it acted like asbestos sorta where it settles in the lungs. That's a far cry from the liquid form that was in some vape juice before the freakout, which has never shown to cause popcorn lung, just like it doesn't with cigarettes.)

Also the supposed cases of popcorn come from one source. Some dude in California who cut his cannabis juice with it, and in every single case the kids that got sick were using his juice in vape pens, not actually vaping. It's Friday night here and I'd rather not track the story down but if you really want it I'll find it.
As a former life long smoker, vaping (which is the front line treatment for cessation in the UK) saved my life. Now, however, the shops pushing disposable vapes with super high nicotine salts on to kids - which is illegal almost everywhere - they need to die in a fire. The kids don't get hooked on "vape;' they get hooked on nicotina because those damn things are the equivalent of smoking two or three regular cigarets in one puff.

I, a warehouse worker, hate OXO for slapping every warning label under the sun on their boxes. I saw a box of oven mitts labeled "fragile" along with like five other warnings. Not even a one size fits all box either, this had custom printing for the product.

Surprisingly, ChatGPT is the mortal enemy of a lot of machine learning researchers.
