Number of times they molested kids.

sunsofold@lemmy.zip · 77 pts · 71d (14 replies)

Monkey paw's finger curls: You can see them. They're EVERYWHERE. People you thought you knew and loved have numbers greater than zero over their head. Despite your horror, you try to make use of the power to try to bring them to justice. No one believes you. You have the Cassandra's curse of the status quo. 'Steve? What are you talking about? He'd never do anything like that. Butter wouldn't melt. You should probably shut your mouth before we get offended about what you said about our friend and kick the shit out of you. Know what I mean?' You watch the news and see everyone who has a position of power over you and your loved ones has a non-zero number. You try to escape into fictional media but your favorite actors are non-zeroes, the author pictures in your favorite books show non-zeroes, the album sleeves of your favorite bands show non-zeroes.

Knowledge can be a burden.

Ehh. Serial killers tend to only get so far.

Spacehooks@reddthat.com · 4 pts · 71d (2 replies)

I heard in america, that FBI says there are few serial killers around that never get caught. They probably have a system or lack thereof.

Some media sources have cited estimates suggesting there may be 25 to 50 active serial killers in the United States at a given time, though the FBI has stated that the true number cannot be quantified.

CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org · 3 pts · 71d

Yes, there's no real chance they've all been caught. I'd guess risk increases with rate of killing, though, and the status of their victims.

HerbGrower@slrpnk.net · 3 pts · 69d

Given that most solved murders are cases where the victim knew the killer, go out and kill random people with non zero values. Spread it around.

You may eventually get caught. How many is enough to say it was worth it?

Then as you live in horror and disgust, you see people's numbers rise day after day, unable to prove to others their horrendous crimes.

sunsofold@lemmy.zip · 10 pts · 71d (2 replies)

And then you befriend a stranger on the internet. You are nervous at first but you can't see them, so you can imagine their number is zero. You hit it off. They're amazing. Funny. Sweet. Kind. Hardworking. The relationship turns into a distant romance. Then you finally meet. You had no idea the number could go that high.

Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 69d

Or… you meet up and are flabbergasted by their ZERO. You could not be happier. You get extremely close, get married, have a child together… twins! You’re out overnight with friends, and your partner’s friend comes to visit. You return the next day to find the kids sleeping in and your beloved and their friend having a nice brunch, laughing with each other gleefully with the number two over each of their heads.

Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 69d

Or x2

You meet up for the first time in real life, and they do not have a number. How could this be? EVERYONE has a number, thank the gods they’re almost always zero! You’re immediately suspicious of their intentions and past actions. They’re not acting anything like they did online… they’re actually acting really fuckin weird, which greatly discomforts you.

You grapple with this internal conundrum, but you had failed to notice something crucial: The instant you saw each other, their eyes so briefly darted up, looking above your head.

Truth is tricky

Iconoclast@feddit.uk · 5 pts · 71d (3 replies)

Let's start with the times you've said something you know to be untrue.

prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 6 pts · 71d

I told my nephews that Santa was real

charokol@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 71d

So sarcasm is lying?

fristislurper@feddit.nl · 3 pts · 71d

Does reading the Big Friendly Giant to a nephew count as one big un-truth or many small ones?

charokol@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 71d (1 reply)

How about any statement told with the intent of the recipient believing something about the world that the speaker knows to not be true

HeHoXa@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 71d

That's a very good angle, honing in on exactly the problem of lying.

"Intent" could get just as tricky. With all the various forms of psychosis, delusion, etc. it'd be tough to say whether someone "meant" to do something. (It's trickier than we'd usually like to admit even for a typical person.)

The same kind of problems exist around whether the speaker "knows" something to be false.

Then there's the problem of fiction. Bedtime stories, campfire stories...

And not exactly a technical problem, but what about a doctor who knowingly oversimplifies or otherwise intentionally twists his words in an attempt to get the patient to manage their condition optimally? Parents who lie about how something works to help their kids understand something or behave safely? Teachers who oversimplify physics lessons to present it in a way their students can grasp for now. Not exactly a technical problem maybe, but would we want "noble lies" to affect the counter? This is a little off track, just occurred to me and felt like writing it out 🤷‍♂️

This one doesn't pose a direct problem really but maybe helps me get to my point: what if people who rode a train moving at relativistic speeds when lightning struck both ends talk with someone who was watching from outside about when the lightning struck? Truth is tricky...

But making it, "how often did they attempt to intentionally deceive" as you suggested is a great approach imho. Maybe almost realistic. There's probably some biological indicators of that right? ... for non-psychopaths

tuckerm@feddit.online · 37 pts · 71d (11 replies)

Some kind of "empathy score." Not sure what the formula would be, but it would reflect how readily they feel empathy for another person, and how many other people they can care about.

A narcissist would have a 0 -- they can only care about themself. Someone with very limited empathy would have a small number -- say, they can only care about their immediate family, and they need to really get to know someone before they care about that person. People who naturally care about others, even if they don't know the other person, would have high numbers.

This number would sometimes just flat out tell you that certain people should be avoided, or certain conversations are pointless with that person. Or if you do need to try to convince them of something, the number may show you how to frame the conversation. E.g., show how it's in their own interest if they have a low number.

garbagebagel@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 71d

I can't tell if that would end up depressing the crap out of me or making me feel better about the world. My pessimistic brain tells me there are far more un-empathic people in the world than I'd like to acknowledge.

leadore@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 71d (4 replies)

samus12345@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 71d (3 replies)

I thought that only you can see this stat, not everyone else. It's an issue of privacy violation otherwise.

leadore@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 70d (2 replies)

Oh, I didn't see any other rules specified in the question :) So, isn't the fact that I can see everyone's stat above their head already a privacy violation to begin with? Also, am I the only one who gets to see a chosen stat or can other people also choose a stat that only they can see?

samus12345@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 70d (1 reply)

It doesn't specify, but if everyone could see it the implications would be more pressing than the question itself. If only one person, or just a select few people, in the world can see it it's not a widespread privacy violation. Just like only a select few people are (supposed) to have access to private information in the real world for it to not be a privacy violation.

Presumably with questions like others can see different stats if they chose one. And even if only you saw it you could be super unethical and MAKE it a widespread privacy violation by showing social security, credit card, etc. info and stealing whatever you could as much as you could.

leadore@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 70d

Yeah, but those select few are given access for a specific need, like to be able to give you health care or pay your salary, etc. If even just a few randos could see whatever stat they want about all of us for no reason than their own wishes, I'd definitely consider that a violation of our privacy, even if they kept the info to themselves and even more so if it was something they could exploit. But all this is getting away from the spirit of the question.

seggturkasz@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 71d (1 reply)

This! You would be able to see who's trusting and caring? Perfect for scaming people all day, every day! I love it!

samus12345@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 71d

No, not really. There are a LOT of very unempathic people who are super easy to scam (MAGA), and being empathetic doesn't mean you fall for scams easily. You'd want something like a gullibility score for that.

AlteredEgo@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 71d

Oh awesome. I'd love something like that, and do think we need to kind of train every person to understand and analyze others empathy better. Because this is a major problem when selecting, voting or promoting people into position of power. Every time there is a competition for a promotion, the ones that care the least about anything but more power or money or influence will be statistically more likely to advance. The more self serving the better. So at the top end you have function sociopaths who are very adept at lying about themselves or even to themselves.

Detecting purely self-serving or greedy people would be awesome and should be taught and trained for in school as basic political education. You know like math or PT is taught and trained. And candidates for political power should be put through some kind of "psychological gauntlet" to make it at least more likely they show they care or believe in something besides gaining more power.

It might also be possible to create a kind of AI models to evaluate and analyze people seeking power. Like some sort of lie detector test observing every reaction and every word and tonal shift in a conversation with the machine. Something like the interrogation in Blade Runner or "The Expanse" Season 1. Of course a bit of a ludicrous idea.

Might be better to just pick someone at random, quite likely to get better world leaders like that.

But this remains a fundamental problem of any hierarchical system, no matter if capitalism or socialism. We are now in an age where humanity can easily destroy itself, and we have collectively chosen, or proven unable, to save ourselves from the existential danger of climate change. And despite our "advances in ethics" in general, we're still ruled by total shits. And no matter what system we choose the problem will persist. Lack of empathy is a very strong indicator for that.

Sorry for the long rant lol

FYI, I believe you use narcissist wrong, because generally they "weaponize empathy" to manipulate people. They absolutely need to maintain a false glamorous mirror image of their own ego (or they die) and will use all sorts of rationalizations or delusions to keep that up. From a young age they need to pretend and for that they need to read people very well. And as long as they see you as one of the awesome people they'll charm you, but if they see you as one of the shit people they'll flip and treat you like dirt. And no amount of time will change that lol.

TheStaffmaster@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 70d

I'd add in a modifier for people on the spectrum. Like, the number is low, but that's due to an underdeveloped social ability, not because they are sociopaths.

SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 70d

A narcissist has a lot of empathy... for themself. A racist has a lot of empathy for people of their own race, but zero empathy for people of certain races.

Dave@lemmy.nz · 45 pts · 71d (7 replies)

It would be interesting to see this update in realtime. You see someone about to get in their car, with a death time 5 mins from now. You call out "hey", they stop, see you were talking to someone else. The date updates to 30 years in the future, as that momentary pause meant they won't be in the place they would have when someone runs a red light.

Somewhere unseen, someone's number changes from 20 years away to 5 mins away.

DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 71d (5 replies)

My thought was that it would be immutable. It wouldn't change even if I told them.

I don't think I'd tell very many people. It's not something I'd want people to know about me. Also, the few I told wouldn't believe me and if I proved to others that I knew this, I think they'd see me, rightly so, as some sort of freak. The temptation to ask would be overwhelming, but they don't really want to know.

Dave@lemmy.nz · 8 pts · 71d (4 replies)

It kind of ruins the concept if you can't use the information to change the outcome. Or maybe just makes it sad, every time you try to save someone they die at that time anyway. How willing they are to talk to you right now. You can always pick the right person to talk to if you need to ask a question, give a friend the exact amount of space they need if they’re going thru something, and easily identify people that are interested in you (or not). Best of all, though, you can spot someone who’s a little too eager to talk and avoid a hostage-style conversation where they won’t let you leave politely

Pika@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 71d (5 replies)

maybe categorize it into white lie, black lie, red lie, gray lie etc, There is definitely times where a lie "can" be good. It doesn't change the fact that it's a lie but, lies that are made in the attempt to be well intended or to help someone are important to know as well.

Like for example, seeing someone with a really high red lie count would be a warning flag because that means they are willing to lie against their own best interests which can indicate issues with anger or rage. But someone with only white lies, or gray lies would be based less significantly as those are done with well intent to the target, either against or for the liars own best interests.

HubertManne@piefed.social · 2 pts · 71d (4 replies)

I mean this is some magic super ability so maybe it would work but if you had to like program it what is white/gray/black is highly subjective. If it uses the persons personal opinion some nasty people would list 0. I bet trump does not believe he has really lied often times. Now if its based on what I would consider white/gray/black that would be nice.

Pika@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 71d (3 replies)

It would be based off objectivity, not belief.

Whether someone thinks it's a lie or not doesn't matter. Although you do bring up a good point. Maybe having an additional category "mistaken lies" or something would help. It would also help decipher how often the person fact checks lol

HubertManne@piefed.social · 1 pts · 70d (2 replies)

there really is not objectivity with white grey black lies because everyone has different lines. Its why you even need the gray area.

Pika@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 70d (1 reply)

gray in the case of lies doesn't mean gray areas, a grey lie when identifying lies actually means that the lie benefits both parties without causing harm to either side. A white lie is a lie that benefits the other party at the cost of the liar, a black lie only helps the liar at the cost of the other party, and a red lie hurts both the liar and the other party.

I would say that type of system could only be objective, while the intent does matter as well, I believe a lie that harms the other side, even when you meant otherwise would be either a red or a black lie, since it harms the other it can't be gray or white.

I would love a metric above their head that states how many times an advertisement has actually worked on them, vs how many they have seen.

I think it would revolutionize the way we see ads today, because I think almost everyone would have significantly low numbers.

schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 71d (5 replies)

I think everyone knows that advertising is relatively ineffective on a per-view basis, but they're hoping it at least pays for itself...

Pika@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 71d (4 replies)

Yea, but im hoping the constant re-enforcement that it doesn't work will sway them away from wanting to spend on advertisement in the first place.

schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 71d (3 replies)

That would have interesting knock-on effects for ad-supported services....

Pika@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 71d (2 replies)

Yea, I do agree we would see more services become paywalled as a result. Not that that would be a bad thing though, not every site would go that route, the main reason sites don't already is because they know that the typical user isn't going to pay money to access their site, they will just go elsewhere.

The way I can see it, the ad supported model would go away, then branch into a few ways:

  1. Sites opt for a paywall on the individual scale; but this won't work as the everyday user isn't going to spend $ on every site they visit, so they will just visit sites that don't force a paywall
  2. Sites opt into selective pay packages/subscriptions kind of like how cable worked, where you pay one provider, and it gets distributed across sites based on how much traffic each site got that was involved. I'm unsure how I feel about this route. If it's done right I wouldn't mind but, if it ends up being insane pricing like how cable was I wouldn't participate.
  3. Sites tone down the amount of ads, as the only thing they are making money on now is user data tracking, which doesn't need a bunch of different ads on the system and also doesn't really require user interaction.
schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 71d

The two examples we have aren't great: video streaming and newspapers.

For video streaming, they try to create as much of a monopoly as possible and then extract value from you--enshittification. And even at this early stage, it's not the "ad-free" tier it's "ad-free^*^" tier.

For newspapers, rich people just buy them and blatantly use it for propaganda; they're willing to operate at an official loss if it saves them from regulation or taxes.

That's too easy to measure on your own. Maybe # of original ideas they ever had?

Bitflip@lemmy.ml · 5 pts · 71d

How about the number of times they've ever been confidently incorrect 🤣

CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org · 3 pts · 71d (1 reply)

Like, truly original? It would usually be a way lower number than you'd expect.

So much stuff dies at the implementation phase.

Melobol@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 70d

Not truly, but a new idea to them - that they got to using their own devices.
I think there are a lot of politicians that would have a lower number than some hardworking mountain man has.

CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org · 2 pts · 71d

Ehh. It means a lot, but also not everything, or even the most. And, there's good evidence people segregate themselves by it naturally.

There's a lot of great choices here. I personally lean towards trustworthiness/if they are being genuine or not with what they are saying, or the net worth one, but since those are taken I'll throw one more into the pot.

This might be more controversial but, a marquee banner with number of crimes committed by type. Nothing super detailed, but like have it say the type of crime, how long its been since committed, and whether they were actually guilty of the charge (not by the laws eyes, whether they actually were guilty of it)

this type of system would be basically useless almost 90% of the time after you have met them once, but, it could be super helpful for determining trustworthiness, how safe you are around them, intention and also whether or not the system failed them or not. It also would significantly speed up the current legal system, as every case would basically be a file the case, show up to the hearing and look at the tag and then verdict instead of spending months sometimes years fighting a lengthy legal battle.

Net worth. Assuming this number is seen by everyone not just me. This would end all keeping up with the Joneses, no posing with sports cars, no super rich people passing as having not enough. But also lots of crimes probably sadly.

psud@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 71d

lots of crime

Lots of us have large net worth locked up in our home, in done age groups it'll tell you nearly nothing

You trying to come up with another unoriginal writing prompt?

I'd go with something like "number of times they genuinely helped another person without any obvious personal incentive to do so (excluding the general warm feeling one gets from doing this.)"

I want to know how likely I am to get something from you. You won't stay home, you won't wear a mask, you won't use protection, you won't get vaccinated - you won't be interacted with.

Pedophile or not pedophile. So I guess, how many children theyve gotten sexual gratification from would be the stat. I think I would be absolutely disgusted by that stat though.

CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org · 1 pts · 71d (5 replies)

Yeah, and what are you going to do with it, tell the police "it's magic, trust me bro"?

Spacehooks@reddthat.com · 1 pts · 71d (1 reply)

I read a few stories where anonymous tip led to something.

CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org · 2 pts · 71d

I guess if you could figure out something more specific than "this person diddled a kid at some point", you could actually do that. You'd have to do some serious detective work, though.

greatwhitebuffalo41@slrpnk.net · 0 pts · 71d (2 replies)

I mean you don't have to get defensive. Go see a therapist if you find little kids sexually attractive 🤮

Spacehooks@reddthat.com · 1 pts · 68d

I remember reading a story about that. A guy did go to therapy and the therapist was not helpful leaving him with few outlets to try and get past this. Wish I had link to reference.
