The internet says the US sells appoximately 200 million pounds of meat a day based on per capital numbers. This is a big number, but drop in the bucket.
That said, they put a false inspection number on it and the recall happened because they got caught. My guess is mis labeling and not being inspected is probably more common than we know.

Do you know why they found it? Because they LOOK for that.
It's an extremely unpopular opinion, and Trump has tried to make our safety nets worse, but the US has pretty good safety nets.
But just like anything else, good safety doesn't mean nothing ever happens. "Safe" drivers are still involved in accidents. Airplanes are safer than cars but do occasionally crash.
We should always want more safety, but food safety in the US is still pretty damned good.

With the efforts to neuter regulatory and inspection agencies, it's surprising they caught this, but who knows how long it's been going on even just the one company

Thing is, many of these things grow over time, and - especially with the active gutting of regulatory and oversight bodies - there's a decent chance that the list isn't comprehensive.
It's also one of the reasons why I have avoided US meat products and grabbed stuff with a maple leaf instead, because it wasn't hard to see this coming (and coming and coming)

Iām pissed. First time Iām my life Iāve ever had it and now I have to boil my pico de gallo or itāll probably happen again
Widdershins@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 1d
The great thing about cilantro is that you can wash it with soap and if you leave a little soap on there you won't taste it
ChunkMcHorkle@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 1d
No boil, but wash in (lightly) soapy water with lots of agitation for at least a minute and rinse well. Or use a product designed for that and rinse well.
Yeah, I'd be pissed too. The problem these days is that anything less than an actual cleaning agent isn't going to dislodge whatever industrial-strength nasty is on the leaves, so you can't just rinse and call it done anymore.
Not shaming you, I had to learn the hard way too. I wash all produce now, and have for years. When you know, you know, and now unfortunately you know too.
BlueOysterCultist@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 23h
Iām probably going to do both going forward
I know boiling works cus I cooked the beans I made with the water from the contaminated pico the cilantro was in (didnāt know I had a problem at that point).
Iāve been eating the beans still, no problems, so the cooking mustāve helped neutralize it.

I have noticed I tend to get sicker when I eat the (properly cooked!) little meat I can lately, though, which I suspect is due to skyrocketed antibiotic use in poultry farming the last decade or two. I also avoid deli meats for similar reasons.

Don't eat A&D meat.
This is not because of deregulation, this is because Star Meat Delivery attempted to avoid inspection by falsely labeling their meat as inspected.
The active regulatory body discovered it, and as it wasn't inspected, the rule is immediate Class I.
While im all for blaming the GOP on deregulation, deregulation did not enable this. Regulation issued the recall.

grue@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 1d
It's because Star Meat Delivery had assumed the deregulation progress was further along than it actually was and thought Trump's USDA would let them get away with it.
moodoovoodoo@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 23h
If we had proper regulation, there would not have been 167000lbs of this shit to recall.
This is not 'oh, the regulation works or it doesn't', humans like to do that a lot for some reason, this whole 'it's either one thing or the other'. Nuance and gradients are a real thing. This would not have happened in a robust regulatory environment. The one we have operates on shoe strings.
Edit: 167000lbs at minimum. As another poster pointed out, this is just what was found. Which is like finding a roach in your house.
Earthwormjim91@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 21h

moodoovoodoo@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 8h
Holy red herring. The point isn't the percentage, the point is that fraud this size got past the system at all. They falsified labels - that's egregious, planned, and indicates a systemic issue with the company.
And sprinkling in a bit of cherry picking? You're dividing what 1 single inspection incident caught against the entire country's consumption of all meat for an entire year. This is apples and oranges, and entirely beside the point - you don't conflate detection with prevalence. Detection indicates a thing is happening, but doesn't indicate the entire scope. If you'd like to look at it in a real-world sort of way - this single inspection incident showed that enough beef to feed nearly 3000 people for an entire year had falsified labels. You can always make something seem small if you appeal to a relative scale to suit your argument.

rumba@lemmy.zip · 0 pts · 4h
Maybe. We don't have enough information to know what's going on. We don't know for a fact that the labels are fake. We have a food safety department that was gutted and replaced by puppet management who have been suspiciously VERY active after receiving critisism that firing and dismantling food safety was a really big public problem.
It might have been actual bad meat
It might have been that the feds weren't going to get to it in time so they just pushed it out the door.
It might be that the labels used were deemed unofficial.
There's to many corrupt things happening right now to say for certain that it was a bad vendor for sure, but we'll never know because that's not how this plays out these days. There's no oversight on the watchers.

You... don't... need to buy those manufactured food products, either, you realize? Chickpeas and rice, mushrooms, tofu, etc. can all lend you to making your own tasty recipes.
Buddahriffic@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1h
Any advice on how to make tofu flavourful? I've been trying to use it but anytime I do, it's more just kinda there rather than really adding anything to the flavour profile. Ironically, some of the "failures" where it all crumbled into something similar to scrambled eggs might have been one of the times where it did seem to pick up flavour, but while I wouldn't say the texture was bad that way, I'd like to get more out of it without it falling apart if possible.
Some chefs on shows like culinary class wars put great effort into making tofu for their dishes (one guy even won the whole show with a dish like that), so I feel like there's gotta be something I'm missing.
AnimalsDream@slrpnk.net · 2 pts · 56m
Lots of people on YouTube have tons of tips on ways to doctor up the taste and texture of tofu, but personally what I think it comes down to is just eating it regularly enough for it to become an acquired taste. It's not the best absorber of flavors, sauces and marinades will only penetrate about a millimeter or two. You can get deep flavor infusion with brines, but then you're eating a lot of sodium too.
People often recommend cutting it into smaller pieces so you're getting a better sauce to tofu ratio. As you said, crumbling it does increase surface area and help it hold more flavors.
So just keep trying things, and keep eating it, cause eventually you will start to actually enjoy it's own natural flavor (some brands taste better than others too). I'm at the point now where I keep it as simple as possible. Forget the unnecessary kitchen gear like presses. I take it right out of the package, maybe squeeze a little water out, and then I'll just smash the thing and crumble it right into whatever I'm cooking.
Buddahriffic@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 42m
Ah ok, that sounds consistent with what I've been seeing. So if I'm understanding correctly, tofu has a flavour/texture tradeoff (best texture I've gotten from it was once when I cut it into like 1cm slices and seared them, managed to get a decent sear on both sides without them sticking to the pan and crumbling. Actually the flavour wasn't that bad either, that one was more simple so I think it was mostly just the tofu and the sear, plus some olive oil that infused it.
I just realized I haven't tried marinating it yet and a quick search looks like people are saying good things about that.

It's a gradual building process, but some perks happen very quickly. Like your whole body being in distinctly less pain - that can happen in days depending on your inflammation status. Or being super bloated because you started eating way too much fiber way too soon, that can happen in a day.
After a few years you may find your immune system starts to become superhuman. Not even joking, it's kind of wild how much more resilient I am to sickness these days. Getting sick far less frequently, symptoms consistently becoming laughably mild, and duration is far shorter too.

By my cowboy calculations the domestic beef packers produce about 400 million pounds of beef per week. 140m of that is trim for ground beef and another 120m are beef cuts. Rest is organ meat and bones.
Your local Sysco chews through more beef than this in a day.

I also sold everything, paid off all my debts and basically moved with just a few suitcases and my dog.
My advice, it looks glamours but life is not always that way. If you can work it out, take 30-60 days in the country you think you want to live in first. Not vacation, live there. Go shopping (food, clothes, furniture), talk to neighbors, ride transit, get a local cell phone number.. everything reasonable. I thrived at this, my Ex did not. And yes, ex⦠we had other big problems but that was the issue that ended everything. In the end it just took time to land the role and I am happy I did - I want this for a very long time, just didnāt expect to be single

Paneer. It's easy to make at home, just use some whole milk and lime juice. Save the whey, use it in recipes that call for adding water
Murse@slrpnk.net · 6 pts · 1d
For those unfamiliar, paneer is a cheese made from cow's milk, very common in Indian dishes. It doesn't melt, so you can use it largely the same way you would tofu, but where tufu has a kind of wet squishy texture, paneer is more firm and chewy. When paneer is heated, it kinda has the same texture as mozzarella when mozzarella is cold.
It's really good cut into slabs, marinated in pretty much any sauce under the sun - whatever you're in the mood for- and grilled/smoked. (edit - low temp! don't grill it like it's a steak or something, or it'll burn)

Red (split) lentils are pretty simple. Unlike other lentils, they don't need soaking for making them less farty and they cook fairly quickly. Can use them as pseudo-bolognese in tomato sauce, or just with rice and veggies, or cook them until they disintegrate (=dal) and then eat with bread etc..
Smoked tofu is also fairly simple (can just eat as-is with bread or in salad or whatever), but you may need to try a few brands to find one with a nice smoke flavour.
If you can find these in the vegan aisle, they're also worth trying: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Textured_vegetable_protein
They're often sold as "soy chunks" or "soy strips".
You just cook them in vegetable broth and then you can fry them like meat. Or if you're really gangster, you fry them while they're dry and then put them into the sauce of your dish, so they soak that up.
I recommend these in particular, because they're chewy, which is something you might miss from other meat alternatives.
_fryerDan@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 23h

Ephera@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 22h
Yeah, I thought I need to mention that, since lots of folks avoid lentils, just because they bloat you when not prepared right. Which is really unfortunate, because lentils are an excellent protein. Healthy, tasty, shelf-stable for an eternity, and at least split lentils are dead simple to prepare as well.
smh@slrpnk.net · 2 pts · 14h
TVP is awesome! We add it to pasta sauce to get a meaty texture. We've also used it in faux shepherd's pie, reconstituted with some sort of gravy.
